I rooted my phone recently to use wifi tethering with my new transformer. Haven't had much luck finding a stable tethering app. One I tried was open garden but it isn't very stable. What's the best one?

I use Wireless Tether stable release
Just google search "wireless tether"
First result, go to the downloads tab
use bluetooth tether
just pair the droid 2 to your transformer and use the bluetooth tether option in the Asus transformer.
it's faster and uses sooo much less battery then than wifi tether and u dont need to root!!
i do it all the time works like a charm
Whoa really? Ill try it out sounds cool

I downloaded wireless tether and it does seem to work very well. Maybe its because I'm running it on CM7

I'm using Barnacle, free from the market. You can rename your network and secure it. It runs ad-hoc. I get 11mbps consistantly.

11mbps? What is your zipcode? You are on verizons 3G network?

10302 Staten Island, NYC. However I get the same speed all over NJ, where I work.
And yes, Verizon 3g.

How is that even possible? I am jealous, but still skeptical...

I'm not permitted to post the link, but I have been using Wifi Tether for Root Users v3.1beta2 and it seems to be working better than ever. Make sure you select DroidX as your device profile.

It's not, I just speedtested it, I feel stupid now for going over the mouseover link in the systray. Sorry for misleading. It's actually 1mbps and .56mpbs upload. Still, faster than my sprint 4g aircard that work has me using.
Ok great I can finally go to sleep!

I've had a great experience with Barnacle Wifi Tether from market.

Thanks, man! FINALLY got a wireless tether app to work on my D2 with Gingerbread 2.3.3. I tried a bunch of others and none of them actually connected out to the internet.
Like derezzer says, select DroidX as your device profile. In addition, i also selected Change Setup-Method to Hostapd (master). So far, so good.
Pdanet works for wired tether. Wifi does not. If u are looking for a tether that works for, lets say, tablets or gaming systems, and not a computer, i haven't found one that works. If its just for a pc, use with tether for root users

If it is like the other roms you do not need another app. Just turn on the built in wifi tether. No need to touch apn's.

Did you download the latest version from here : http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Works fine for me. Tested the newest, (3.1 beta 2), this morning. (ignore the Access Control error).
Also, Barnacle is working fine too : http://szym.net/barnacle/
Also tested this morning, although I got faster speeds with WiFi Tether.

If you want to pay for it. The apps you can download like wirelesstether require root.

Root your dang phone! Don't be scared.
There is a way without root! It's called pay Verizon more $$$
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Even after you root your phone, there is still currently no way to turn the X2 into a wireless access point for free. You CAN set up an ad-hoc connection if your other device supports that. Most do not, except for a laptop running Windows 7.
However, there are MANY other advantages to rooting your phone, and it's not that hard to do.
I am rooted running eclipse.2 rom and tether using wireless tether to my windows xp laptop. Works great no issues. Google wirelesstether.apk for the app.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
I will agree. Rooting your phone is key. If for nothing else but to delete the bloat apps with titanium backup. You can also create backups, tweak memory, run scripts. But mostly tether for free.

Root to unlock the full potential of your X2.
I know the advantages of rooting, I've had a og DROID, DROID 2 and DROID x all rooted and flashed, I just haven't really felt the need to root atm

Not an ad-hoc connection, huh? Is it the Eclipse ROM that's enabling you to do that?

PDA Net And EasyTether Are Both Free And Paid Apps For Non-Rooted Users.
It is an add hock connection, but works fine on xp. I even use my work vpn login with no issues.

Go to home > settings > wireless & networks > tethering & portable hotspot.
You have to flash gapps.zip to get the market and other Google goodies.

I'm using Barnacle WiFi Tether from the App Store. Works great once you get the settings correct. It bypasses the Carrier's HotSpot App by creating an Ad-hoc connection.
Where can i find gapps.zip?

I have successfully tethered my non-rooted stock Nook Tablet to my HTC Amaze 4G with both WPA and no security
I had to enable ad-hoc wifi first as per instructions here: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1370955) before I could connect to my Nokia N8 using joikuspot.
It seems that other people have managed to use another software to create a non-adhoc wifi network, but I think it's good to apply the patch and keep your options open.

They are different for each phone so you have better luck hoping over to the forum for yours and asking over there or checking to see if they have it already set up. Like I said I have a lowend samsung galaxy Prevail here from boostmobile.
I have a rooted NT and am new to tethering (great option since my wife has a Blackberry Bold (Verizon) that her company pays for). Seems like Barnacle and WIfi Tether are the two most used. Any recommendations as to which would be better for a noob?
