How to verify/delete most recent and old recovery backups? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, I'm looking to upgrade from Evil Fascinate to one of the new Gingerbread roms. Haven't been on in a while, so not sure which? Suggestions?
I have created a backup in recovery. How can I verify it is there and how do I delete some of the older backups? If I goto restore, last update is showing July.
I had my phone go crazy on me in August and could not restore an August backup because only July was there.
Thanks in advance.

I would definitely suggest the PWGB rom. It is working flawlessly for me.
As far as the backups I normally just used a file browser from a PC the see or delete old backups from the clockworkmod folder. Mine are never dated correctly so it is hard to determine which one is the newest.

This is a specific question and is not general discussion about the device. It should be in the appropriately named Q&A forum.
As for your question, your backups are on your SD card. /Clockworkmod/backup folder. Each backup is in a folder named by the date it was created. If you don't want that backup, delete the folder.

Do you happen to have any idea why my backups are always dated 01.01.2000? I think I have clockwork 2.5.1.X.

older versions of cwm usr that format. Dating in that format is common in Europe so my guess woukd be that the initial ports of cwm were based off of the i9000, a European device.
Newer versions of cwm seem to have been edited to use the mmddyyyy format which is more common here in America.

Thanks but I should have been more specific. The format is fine but the date is literally recorded as "01.01.2000" instead of the current date. I can't easily tell which file is the latest.

I have the same problem. I feel like it just started recently. My old backups had correct date. Now they are 01.01.2000 with another number after. That's why I thought my backups weren't storing. I was looking at dates and my last was 07.06.2011. Now they are all 01.01.2000.
Not sure why.

Where are nandroid backups stored

On this phone? Internal memory or sd card, what folder? Just rooted yesterday and just want to make sure it was created correctly.
they are stored in the sdcard>clockwork mod folder>backups
Thanks for the reply. I couldn't find it using androzip for some reason so I opened My Files app and found it in the extsd card folder. Does this name look correct 1970-01-01.00.00.13?
thats just a given file name, you could rename however you want so you can tell from different back ups you may have. I rename them using root explorer
It's a bug in CWM

It's a bug in clockworkmod recovery. I have it, too. As the other member said, you can simply rename it using most file explorers until such time when the bug is resolved.

The date is actually wrong in stock recovery too, so it's not necessarily a bug with CWM, but it is on the TODO list to try and fix.
I just posted a thread on this guys, but is this cwm okay for the T mobile gs3 also? It says lte versions, but I know Tmo isn't technically an LTE version?

By "LTE" they mean US variants, so it should work with your T-Mobile GS3.

Ah crap, I was just looking through my backups. I have 4 and didn't think the dates would be off. Now I don't know what is what. At least I know that the smallest one has to be my original one, right? I guess I can just make one now, rename it, and delete the rest except for the original one.

Just a footnote to your comment...
Not sure if this is true or not on the GS3, because I have not tried it, but on past variations of CWM on other phones, if I left a space in the name I would receive a MD5 mismatch error when trying to restore a backup.
Just a heads up...
it sotres them on the internal sd card instead of external. is there any way to change that or is it just the recovery I'm using?

Good question, I'm looking for the answer to this too... Or is there a way to soft link the /sdcard on the internal storage to point to the extcard? I don't like how I can't access the extcard while in recovery--or maybe I'm doing this all wrong
If you use Clockwork ROM Manager, it gives you the option in the setting of using external SD Card. Not sure of the would work for Nandroids backups

Mine is saved in /mnt/extSdCard/clockworkmod/backup.

Or there. The idea is that is stored in one of the storage places, internal or external

CWM and TWRP Backup date wrong...1970-01-01

I've tried a number of times with reloads, etc. to get the correct date with my CWM or TWRP recovery files. But all I get is them being sent to files dated 1970-01-01 as a prefix, rather than the right date (2012-07-11).
I'll use which ever works properly. Right now I am on TWRP, but was originally with CWM
What is causing this and what is the solution?
Also, the TWRP seems to only back to the internal storage, and I would like it to save to the external 16GB micro SD card. Where is the setting for this?
Many thanks.

Solution 1. Navigate to the TWRP or CWM backup folders and rename the backup files to the correct dates (No spaces!)
Solution 2. Sit tight and wait for this to be fixed. Everything for the VZW device is extremely new because of the lack of devices actually recieved
This is not just related to verizon. I am having the same issue with the dates for backups on my att version
Anyone willing to test out Koush's official Galaxy S III CWM (chose the Sprint version since it's closest)?

How know latested Nandroid?

Given that the same date is used when making Nandroid Backups, how does a person know which is the latest?
I do see different times, but have no idea how to tell for sure which is the latest. Looking at properties via a file explorer doesn't help either.
For me, I rename it it right after so that I know which is the newest. I think this might be your best bet. On mine as well, the dates do change as I do nandroids. They are all from 1970 (lol) but it will start off as 1970/01/01 and then 1970/01/15 and so on.

Thanks, Yeah, that is what I decided, but wondered if there was a way to determine. Which means the 3 I had now really need to be deleted. In fact I have already run another and renamed it.
Interesting note: if you look at the properties of the file, instead of 1970, it shows as being created in 1979, but the name shows 1970.
I have had my Rogers S3 for 1 week not and have had the same problem. Already switched out my sim card and now the same thing. I reboot and it works fine. Any one?

Not sure we are talking about same thing. You talking about Nandroid Files haveing a 1970 date? If so, that is a known bug in the CWMs' creation of the Nandroid files...however from what I hear the files work fine. You just need to be able to keep track of which one is which should you need to restore and have more than 1.

Thanks for that.
JFYI, I read so often that we shouldn't use Rom Manager. Seen a number of posts about it causing problems. Maybe it depends on which CWM use have installed, I don't know. But given the issues I've read about that, and not just on this phone, but my previouis Captivate, I have decided to avoid RM, even though I do own it and used it successfully in the past.
For me the problem is that the phone date is at 1970 while in recovery mode. I tried changing the date from automatic network to manual but that didn't help. I guess I'll be renaming my nandroid backups for a while.

I can second that for Sprint. I use ROM Manager for my backups, and that lets you edit the name of them prior to starting the backup. I always make sure to append the ROM name after the timestamp of the backup name.
I wonder what version of CWM works for AT&T, and that we know does not blow away IMEI (of course we aren't sure CWM has anything to do with that)

Because since we know the issue with the date on nandroids, us smart one's go in an rename the nandroid right away so we know. For example, 7.22.12StockRD, would be what I would name my nandroid if I made one today....the date for obvious reasons, Stock indicates it's the stock rom, RD indicates rooted and deodexed.

n00b Nandroid Question

Hello All,
I have a Rooted VZW GN2 running Scott's CleanROM with the Perseus kernel with TWRP as the recovery tool. I screwed up royally a few days ago and bricked my phone (dicking around with the Google Wallet mod, which failed I might add) but was able to fix it and get all my settings back the right way. Well given that it took nearly 3 days, I'd like to save a backup of everything how it is.
How do I accomplish this task? I read on xda that a lot of people use "nandroid" so I downloaded it, did the backup using the "online version" that lets you do a nandroid backup while the phone is running (not in Recovery mode) and it saved the copy to a "clockworkmod" folder. Now I know that clockwork recovery is an option besides TWRP, but since I have TWRP does it make this backup useless? Or can I do a full TWRP backup (everything selected) and will it serve the exact same purpose?
Thanks for the help everyone!!!

OK. First i would ALWAYS backup via recovery. So go in TWRP and back it up. However you could try to restore it and if it didn't work it would say MD5 mismatch.

1. Okay so are you saying that a full TWRP backup (all options selected) = nandroid backup?
2. Does this mean that restoring the back-up TWRP file would restore everything as it is now (down to the last detail) or what could I expect of a restore?

Thank you! Well now I'm trying to save my files to my Dropbox but Dropbox doesn't let me upload the entire folder for the Backup. If I use RootExplorer and convert it to a zip, would that be okay? Will TWRP allow a zip for restoring or would I have to do an extraction first?

I'd just like to be efficient with what memory I do have at the moment. I know that TWRP saves the file in its own folder, but it's actually a large collection of files. My plan was to zip them and upload the zip file to Dropbox and delete the "on-phone" copies. Then if worst came to worst, I would just download the zip back on there via my USB cable (I could extract if it necessary) and then I'd restore it. I just want to know if that would work and whether or not TWRP would be able to use a .ZIP file or if it would need all of the files individually.

Okay, I just did some light reading on Orange Back Up but I'm unsure how it works. Does it replace TWRP / Clockwork? Does it require one or the other for reflashing it's nandroid backup? I really like TWRP's setup and would be reluctant to change from it (although I would do it if the advantages stack up).

I'm confused, isn't that what I've been saying the last several posts? What I plan on doing is zipping up my TWRP files, DropBoxing them, and if I need them I'll just hardload them onto my SD card (extracted into the folder or as a zip file depending on what TWRP needs) and then I'd restore that way.

Just make sure to not compress the zip. Not sure that TWRP will be able to restore a compressed backup (probably won't).

I understand you're concerned about saving as much memory as you can. This is something the rest of us face as well, but quit trying to cut corners and simply do a backup the way you're supposed to and move on with your life instead of trying to invent a shortcut. The tried and true methods used within these forums have worked for years the way they're supposed to.
Either use CWM or TWRP to make your backup. I always keep one active backup and delete older ones. It's easy and almost impossible to screw up.
After I soft bricked my device, I found myself making several types of backups after reading on the forums many different ways of backing up. It appears that my efforts are superfluous and that only one backup is necessary. For this reason, I was trying to figure out the best way to store the backup files. I was zipping the file not to save space as much as I was to have only one file to export to Dropbox, as Dropbox only allows files to be imported instead of entire backup folders.

[Q]How to find out which CWM used for Backup?

cheers guys,
my GT-I9300 broke - now i got a new one. Exact same model.
I used CWM for creating backups.
Now i read, however, that i only can use the backup if I'm actually using the same version of CWM on my new phone that i also used to create the backup.
I don't know, however, with which version of CWM i created the backups.
This results in the fact, that i cant use the old backups to flash my new phone.
Does anyone know a way to find out with which CWM the Backups were being created?
Thank u all in advance,
Regards

It doesn't need to be the exact same version, but there are incompatibilities between really old and newer versions. Have you actually tried to restore a backup yet?
Also, please look at the sticky threads in this section. There is one here in capital letters saying that you cannot post questions here.

Sorry for that! Ill respect it next time.
Actually i tried.... but it doesnt seem to work, as it says in CWM "No such files found" (I was trying to copy it to the right "Backup" folder in /clockworkmod/backup - but i couldnt find the folder!?) and in Mobile Odin it doesnt work either.. Tells me something about "Partition could not be found in file"...
So its.. kinda weired!
I think it might work if I were able to copy them into the right CWM folder.. but even with root in CMs file manager i cant access it.
Thanks for the help

Flash a CWM recovery make backup .
Open backup folder delete contents .
Copy your backup contents to the folder .
