S2 Battery Temperature Warning - Won't Boot - GRRRRR!!! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok I'm really bitter right now. My wife and I each have an S2. Mine has been fine for the last 2 months and hers recently starting having problems. It keeps thinking that a USB cable is plugged in.
A Google search reveals that this is indeed a common hardware problem.
When you do a restart, you get the battery icon and flashing yellow triangle with the thermometer symbol. And the only way to get it to boot up is to plug it in.
The device functions fine other than that, but other than connecting to Kies via USB, there is no other USB related functions that is working.
Gonna give Samsung support a call and see how I can warranty this. Hoping it's not going to be a painful process.
Anyone else having the same problem? How did you resolve it? New replacement? Did they repair? How long did it take? What did you do?
Thanks.

I have the same problem, started with me recently, I had my phone with USB debugging mode on.
Can't confirm when it started for sure, but it may have been because I disconnected it from my computer once, before ejecting the device through windows explorer.
In any case, I can't turn on the phone now without removing the battery or having it plugged in.
I received the battery at 100% notification and it doesn't leave when I unplug the device.
It's become very flaky, and I don't like it. Did you have any luck with Samsung support?

Anyone have any information on this or another link to how to fix this? I'm getting the temperature gauge and can't figure out how to fix it!!

Brother had the same problem. Try adjusting the piece in the USB port of the phone either up or down. I used a small flat head screwdriver. Make sure the phone is off and battery out.
I'm not responsible for any further damage to the phone.

Yeah - get a replacement.

I had similar issues with mine. Took it to Carphone warehouse in uk. And they replaced usb port within 30 mins. Its a common fault.

Try to clean USB port.

This morning I just noticed this problem with my phone and I also noticed that under the battery stats it shows that the phone is always charging.
If I reboot the phone sometimes I lose about 20% from the battery, but then it starts to recharge although the phone is not plugged in.
I will try to change the battery with a friend of mine, maybe it's battery related, I will report back.

I suppose that the problem of discharging is:
A) when connected it can't enter in deep sleep mode
B) vbus_present eating battery

Charging Icon although no cable connected

Hi,
i immediately flashed my Flyer to Honeycomb after i received it and worked with the first HC leak from Paul so far. Now i updated to the newest leak (with downgrading from GB first) and i still have a problem i got from the beginning.
Unfortunately i don't know if it occured in GB too, because GB was only a couple of minutes on the flyer.. ;-)
What is the problem?
I charge the turned on Flyer over night and after disconnecting the charging icon is still shown. Turning the device of and on (Fastboot) doesn't help but completely rebooting does.
When i don't reboot i need to wait a long time until i get a message that there is more battery capacity consumed than could be charged and now i can connect the cable again, disconnect it and the charing icon disables.
Am i the only one with this issue?
I am a little afraid that this is a hardware error!?
Regards
Daniel
Noone?
Okay, who owns a Flyer, runs a HC leak and has no problems about that?
Do you charge like i do (over night, charging while turned on, plug out while turned on)?
I have us best buy flyer. Running leaked hc. I do not have this issue and charge my flyer over night while turned on. Not sure what could be causing your issue
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using xda premium
This is really annoying! I just connected the flyer to my pc to copy same data and after disconnecting the charger icon still remains. wtf!?
So if noone has this issue, what could be the cause?
This happens to me occasionally. Just a simple reboot usually fixes the issue.
@geebee1932: occasionally? About how often in let's say 10 charging processes?
This time a reboot did not work. I then connected and disconnected the charger and it did not word too. Only a reboot and disconnect while rebooting helped to get rid of the charging icon.
Really strange and as so many people don't have this problem i assume it must be a hardware defect!?
What about warranty of the usb port when you unlocked the bootloader with htcdev.com?
I find that if the icon is still there and I select one of the 4 options it automatically kills the icon, loads the sd card, and everything is normal. If not then I'll restart.
Sorry? What 4 options do you mean?

Got it... Okay i will try it the next time.
It occured again.
These 4 options only appear when connecting to the pc right?
As i charge with the normal ac cable i cant use this hint. Or do i misunderstand you?
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using XDA App
Yes, only when connected to the PC.
Another trick I do is look at the power button, if it stays orange even after disconnecting the cable wait a few seconds then press the power button, press it to turn on the screen, and it should go away. This is more to get the SD card loaded, but will also kill the icon.
Other thing to note is that when you disconnect the usb cable at the PC, but leave the other side of the usb connected to the Flyer it will still think the usb is plugged into something. Once I disconnect it at the Flyer it will load my SD card and end the usb icon. As you can tell I have SD card loading issues more than the usb icon.
As I said though, restart should be worst case if it doesn't go away which hasn't happened to me yet.
I sent it to htc for warranty repair now.
Unfortunately it got lost while shipping. Hope i get my money back from the insurance...

Motherboard and internal memory.

Hi guys.
Just now I was trying to use my phone and suddenly it couldn't turn on anymore. I searched around in the internet and found out that it might be the problem of motherboard.
It doesn't turn on at all. So I am wondering if I change my motherboard, will the data inside be wiped too?
I am okay with the apps and stuff but I don't want to lose the pictures, contacts and my texts.
Any idea on what I can do ?
I really really really don't want to lose those 3 things mentioned.
Thank you a lot for any replies
What (if anything) did you do to resurrect your phone?
Did you remove the battery for some minutes?
Did you try turning it on with the help of a USB Jig?
Does the phone charge?

As far as I know the memory is part of the MBO so if it gets replaced the memory gets replaced too, hence all data not on external SD will be lost.

I did remove the battery for about an hour. Charged with and without battery on. No response both ways. I don't own an USB Jig so I didn't try that method. I am using official ROM, most probably 4.0.4 ICS. Any clues ?

What I was trying to say is: does the battery get charged, i.e. if you connect the AC adapter to your phone (which is turned off and has the battery inserted) do hear a sound and do you see the battery charging symbol? If not, how can you tell that the battery is charged at all? First of all you should make absolutely sure your battery is fully charged, for instance by putting it in an other phone.
Once you know the battery is fully charged the Jig might help. You should also try getting into download mode by using Volume Down + Home + Power button. But again: first make sure the battery is charged.

I used two different charger and tried to charge the phone and nothing came out on the screen. No battery charging symbol. It remains the same dark screen. I will try to find another phone or battery that can fit to test, most probably at the stores tomorrow. But I am pretty sure my battery have some batteries left. If so, anything I can do right now ? It doesn't switch on at all so I guess that's why the download mode didn't work ? Is there a big possibility of it being the motherboard ? I don't mind replacing anything but I just don't want to lose those important data. Thanks for the help
Can you get into download mode? Use the volume down + home + power button combination.

Without Jig? No. Probably order one from Ebay? The Jig is quite cheap so you do not loose much money if it does not work.

Battery icon blinking

I'm using latest XWLPX firmware and it have been working fine and now suddenly the battery icon keeps flashing, I can't see any battery stats, the battery percentage dont go down and when I reboot my phone it drops from 80% to less than 20%. When the phone is turned off a battery is shown indicating how much battery percentage is left and some seconds later it disappears and it appears again, over and over. Is the battery damaged? I've tried to unplug battery, wipe cache and wiping battery stats. Yesterday I used my phone when it was raining just to see when the bus arrived but I dont think just using it in the rain for a short time will damage it. Shall I try to re-flash in Odin?
for sure you need the re-flash, if you are not on custom ROM, why not do emergency recovery trough Kies?
I cant tell you if your battery is damaged, did you install some crazy battery tools/indicators/mods?
Try reflashing and see what happens mate.
I recommend you to reflash rom and then try better battery stats...
Cuz ur observation says its not Hardware problem

Really strange, the flashing battery symbol has to mean something. I also noticed if I plugin USB charger and remove it, then try to disable "USB debugging" in settings I'll get a "USB is connected. Remove the cable." error message. I just restarted my phone too see if I could get rid of it but I still can't disable it and now my battery dropped to 12% it was almost fully charged?! And the icon keeps flashing. When I turn it off again by pressing the power button the battery screen appears and disappears over and over again like I said it first post. It's the screen you normally get when you connect the AC adapter to your phone indicating how much it's charged. It shouldn't appear if you dont have USB or AC adapter connected. It's impossible to turn on the phone, when I hold in the power button for some time the battery screen disappears. Then I try to power it on but instead the battery screen appears again without booting my phone. Only way to get in is to start recovery mode and select reboot phone. Gonna try to re-flash with Odin but seems to be more a hardware issue.
update: re-flashed and the problem persists...
I just flashed CM9 and almost all the time even when I'm not charging I get a battery with a charging icon on it. Here is a picture of the strange battery drain:

I have exactly the same problem, and I also disassembled the back and searched for the issue. Cleaned the connector with some white gas and compressed air, but it didn't helped at all.
Did anybody fix this issue?

Phone wont turn on. Heats up near the camera while charging. Help/suggestions needed

Hi folks,
My S2 wont turn on. Not when connected to a charger or via USB to my puter. It occasionally heats up whilst connected to charger/computer near the camera.
I had this same problem about 4 weeks earlier. Tried all sorts of stuff after reading around on the forums here : Remove battery. Let it discharge completely(for a day). Soft Reset. Hard Reset. Hit Power+vol up+menu button while inserting battery at the same time. No avail.
But after a couple of days of desperation, opened up odin3 v1.85. Connected the phone to computer via usb. Put the computer on sleep mode. Checked again after bout an hour or so. The phone had heated up near the camera. Removed the USB plug and hit power button. VOILA!!!! it started!!!! Another thing i must mention is that in ODIN. The ID:COM box (6 boxes) had turned yellow showing Port 1, 3, 5, 7, 6, 4 in random order. and in the Message Box it showed Port 1 : connected. Upto 7.
Phone was working fine for upto 4 weeks after that. Started acting funny again. Got random freezes. Then a couple of times the box saying : Unfortunately your gapps has stopped working, turned up. Couldnt get into play store. Powered off the phone to try to get into the recovery mode.
Again the same problem which I had faced 4 weeks earlier.
Been trying for about a week now. All the same methods tried earlier
Tried the method which worked earlier. with ODIN on, phone connected via USB charger. ID:COM box turns yellow(6 boxes) Phone heats up near battery. But it wont power on again like it had the last time.
Stock JB firmware present on phone
Would be a great help if anyone knew what the hell is going on with my phone. Help / Suggestions anyone ?!

Thanks! But dont want to give up just yet on it. Also the Service Centre guys in my city are nothing else but a bunch of thieves.
Have taken it to a service centre and shown it already, the options offered to me was they would force a software re-install, check the battery and also something about keeping the board immersed in some liquid for a day(was told that it 70% of the phones start up after that).
Just dreading the motherboard replacement, apart from wanting to spend on it.
Am attaching a screen shot of ODIN after I plug in the phone and leave it for bout an hour with the computer in sleep mode.
Tried it again but just wont turn on.

HTC DNA does not have signs of life.

Hello,
My HTC DNA suddenly turned off while plugged in the charger and does not want to turn on. (I suppose it was fully charged)
When plugged into the charger, it has no signs of life the charging light does not even flash.
I have tried almost all the possible key combinations (Vol Up + Vol Down + Power, the same while being plugged in, etc...)
I have taken it apart, disconnected battery from the motherboard and left for several hours. That did not work also.
I tried to wake it up using different chargers and pc, that did not work also.
When it is plugged into the wall charger, the ac adapter warms up a bit.
What can else can I do to wake it up? I am in a desperate situation, because the only alternative at least for several months is Nokia XpressMusic with a bad screen and earspeaker. It is a big downgrade.
I have found threads with similar problems here and on other forums too, but still could not find solution.
Any idea will be VERY appreciated.
Thanks.
The issue you explain is the phone failing. It is an issue with the main board. The only solution is sending it to HTC for a board swap which was $180 last I checked for this device.

I brought it used and can't repair it under warranty. For $180 I can buy better phone, but I have no money at the moment.
Is not the motherboard repairable?
If we assume, that hardware of the phone is okey, what possible fixes of the issue are avialable?
Thanks.

Okey guys, I have a big update.
I have left my phone in a battery disconnected state for about 24 hours and it finally turned on. Then it had audio problems (squeezing noise only in speakers, sound in headphones was fine), after trying to make a call, it shut off itself again.
I have disconnected the battery again, flashed new rom and the problem with audio remains. In the beginning it had problems with charging, but after several minutes in the wall plug it began to charge.
By the way, I have lost the black tape, what was between the motherboard and case. I think, that the phone won't have problems without it. What do you think?
