Just enable USB debugging and type in 'adb devices' from command prompt. (For adb to work you need Android SDK)
If it reports as some device as detected, things can be worked out.

[Q] How to enter into recovery mode using external SD card? USB port - not working

Hi
I have the AT&T version of S2 i777. The USB port can be used for charging but it is not recognized on PC - windows( to use ODIN). I had taken it to samsung showroom and they said it would cost 60$ to replace the USB port (which would solve the problem).
The problem is that while I was flashing CUSTOM rom, the phone shut down in between and since then I can't boot up my S2. I cannot enter the recovery mode. I can enter download mode but that's of no use to me as I cant use ODIN (since the USB is not working).
Is there any way to use external SD card to force the S2 to enter recovery mode and then use the same sd card to flash a custom ROM. - basically flash a ROM without using ODIN or USB port.
Hope the question and problem is clear.
Please help me out.
Thanks

no external Sdcard can force your phone to recovery mode AFAIK, i think u have to go for a USB flex board replacement
I am guessing USB port was broken before the rom flashing . I can't see how a flashing gone wrong can damage usb flex . other than that usb flex replacement is quite common ..

flash a recovery image with adb, without usb debuging, becaouse tablet isnt booting

So i want to flash the recovery image for my nvidia shield tablet, becaouse it isnt booting at all (and no, nvidia didnt killed it, i bricked it :crying: :crying: ) So i got the drivers for adb, but since i cant boot/start the device i cant use adb at all, because it isnt showing any conected devices. Recovery data problems, need big help please

Hello guys, first of all sorry for my bad english but i need your help. I have a big trouble, my phone fell to the ground and got broken display and touchscreen. I tried recovery my data but when i plug the phone with usb cable it loads in the pc but looks empty, i think because i have the pin number for the sim card (tried removed but it doesn't work ) and i have another for the android system but i can't insert the number for unlock the phone. I haven't samsung account, i haven't enabled the usb debug mode and i don't know how the hell get in my phone!! I have tons of picture to save in dat phone and any backup aviable. I don't wanta buy another display, is there another way to control this smartphone with my computer with broken display/touch, pin number and usb debug mode disabled? Pls help me boys!
Have a new screen fitted. If kies cant do it and you cant flash nothing your options are limited.

You can't access your data while the phone is locked because android blocks mtp... If all you want to do is access your internal storage, you can try flashing TWRP in Odin and then accessing your internal storage using mtp in TWRP.
Try the following:
boot into download mode with home+volume down+power, after some time press volume up to confirm download mode activation
flash TWRP via ODIN (dropbox#com/s/3ir2eqsx8ewgj8m/twrp-2.8.7.3-i9300.tar?dl=1 Link for twrp-2.8.7.3-i9300.tar)
after you notice successful flash in odin: prevent auto-reboot by long pressing power-button
reboot to recovery mode | with home+volume up+power
connect s3 with usb, MTP connection should be enabled by itself
tricky part is at point 4./5.

Fried USB port would be my best guess. Try booting to TWRP and plug your phone in to see if it is recognized.
