questions?? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

just ordered an international sgs2 and found out that att is coming out with thier version this sunday. my phone has no warranty thru expansys us so i was thinking of returning it and getting one from att where i will have warranty. there are a few questions that i have though before i return the international version if anyone can help me out? are there supposed to be any major differences between the international version and the one offered by att? if not, and i do return the int. version can i still root it using the programs offered for the int. version? any help guys would be appreciated!

Keep the international version its gonna get updates first. So u don't have to wait for At&t to give you the update.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App

I think the AT&T version has NFC (near field communication) if that is of any interest to you. Also the AT&T version doesn't have a physical home button, instead eschewing that for a capacitive one and a search key. I don't know whether you will be able to flash international roms on it though.

You can't get the new updates through kies from samsung if you root the phone and use a different rom? just curious?

I think nfc might be good for some people but i've already had someone try to steal my identity once so keeping my credit card info on my phone for easier purchases isn't for me.

[Q] Should i buy international version or ATT version of this phone?

I have been waiting a while now for the SGS2 to come to att, but now im thinking i might just be better off with the international version anyway.
Right now im using a samsung captivate. I like that the phone has so much community support, but sometimes wish i had the i9000, because it gets updates faster, and has a better modding community.
I know att's version will have support, and will probably be ok. But since both phones are gonna cost me about the same, should i just get the international version?
I hope to be able to run cyanogenmod as well.
Internatiol is better , but if you consider to use a custom rom, i doesnt matter which version do you have.

Well akaik the captivate was a different story. I9000 roms would work on it, but with modifications and bugs. Looking back on the SGS1, i would much prefer to have the international version. Is that going to be the same case with this phone though?
Please help... I did a search and didn't find what exactly what I was looking for. I'm coming over from an iPhone So I'm in the US and I just purchased the international version of this phone. I'm going to use it on AT&T. I know that the international version does not have a warranty in the US, but am I going to have trouble getting official Android updates via Kies or Odin if I'm not rooted? In other words, does the updates originate based on what country my phone was originally made for? I got an unlocked version and I don't see any carrier branding on the outside.

Which version of the I717 should I get?

First off, it's great to see so many familiar faces here in the Note section. I am wanting to upgrade from my Telus Desire HD to a Samsung Note. I am on ATT here in the USA, although I prefer non-ATT phones for personal reasons. I prefer rooted unbranded stock ROMs. Are there any advantages or disadvantages between the Telus, Rogers, and Bell versions? If my understanding is correct, the Bell version comes unbranded and sim unlocked? Any advice before I take the plunge?

The Bell version is full of bloatware and sim-locked. I don't think there's any difference between each version of the device exept maybe the bloatwares and the modem.
Thanks for the reply. I have been doing some heavy searching and have been getting mixed results. One person says Bell has no carrier branding and another claims Telus while another claims Rogers. I would like to keep the options available on the Canadian ROM versions. I don't see any rooted unbranded Canadian carrier ROMs on XDA and would like the easiest approach while I get used to Samsung.
DaGr8 is a well know developers on the GNote and he owns the i717R (Rogers). As far as I know, right now he's working on a i717 (AT&T) leak of ics with this device and I also flashed the leak without any trouble. Every LTE Galaxy Note seems to share the same specs, so don't worry about that.
I use my i717R on Fido (Rogers sub-brand) and I didn't had to sim-unlock it even if Fido don't sell this phone. Still, I've been told that the phone is still locked to Rogers network.
Also Rogers and AT&T share nearly the same network technologies since the beginning, yes Rogers just like AT&T were the first to have the iPhone in Canada. That's something to concider.
Hi Agoattamer. I know you from the Inspire\HD threads. I too am making the change to Note. I was simply planning on getting the ATT version just because it was the cheapest way to go. Now your post is making me wonder if I should consider other options. I can't really offer a lot of info to answer your question of which way to go. Just wanted to say hi. (We are both fellow Pennsylvanians, too.)
Rooted is easy, as I am sure you know.
Unbranded, stock ROMs is also not an issue. There are several ROMs already in the Dev thread and more are coming all the time. Most, if not all, seem to be ICS so I hope that is to your liking.
As of now unlocking is going to cost you. Only the paid services option is available, so far. I saw an option that unlocks other Samsung phones but so far I haven't been able to get anyone to try it for me so it is one of the things I plan to do once I get my new Note.
Get the AT&T version
Get the AT&T version I'm trying to get WildChild to this also but he really likrs HTC
Don't want the ATT version.
Actually we are from the same town kimtyson. I don't want to give up my dumbphone unlimited plan. Not sure if we will get LTE here in the next 2 years. And the money I will save by paying $10 a month for trully unlimited internet will overshadow the around $500 price tag.nd won't be stuck in a 2 year contract in case something great does come up. I am guessing I can get any of the three to suit my needs.
Maybe I am blind but I haven't seen any stock unbranded and bloatfree ROMs available. Do they exist?
Ordered a Roger's version. Can't wait to play with it.

[Q] Need urgent info, which version is latest?

Hi all, I have one hour to decide whether to buy One or not, but t-mobile locked version only. I need to know what's the latest version that t-mobile One has, 1.26? 1.27?
thanks

In the US, 1.27, afaik. That's what's on mine. I don't think anyone in the US has 1.29, though that's what's now available in some parts of the world.
Thanks. So, you believe 1.29 could come soon on worldwide T-Mobile One too?

1.29 is currently available in some countries. There are links here, or at least in the vanilla HTC One forum for RUUs available for 1.29 now, though what their compatibility is with the T-Mobile version of the phone is, I'm not sure.
Coming at it from a different angle, custom ROMs for the One can have Android 4.2.2 right now, but that means giving up Sense, if that matters to you.
I wouldn't want to root it right now, thanks for the info.
Of course I have to be out of luck.
At 8PM I entered T-mobile and asked a lady if they have HTC One, she said "Yes we do, LTE version.", I said "great", of course. Since they work till 9PM, I wanted to ask the above mentioned question here, before deciding whether to buy it or not.
Finally, about 8:45PM I decide to buy it. Headed straight to T-mobile again, said I wanted to renew my subscription and buy the HTC One. She brings me HTC One SV. After a few attempts to explain her the difference, she said "ahhh, that One! We don't have it, it didn't arrive yet and we don't know when will we get it!".
Turned around and headed home.
Good work HTC

[Q] Problems updating (to 4.3) an AT&T Note II, but on tMobile

Hi. I haven't been able to find anything on this topic. I have an N7105 Galaxy Note II that I bought from an AT&T customer. The only problem is that I am using it on TMobile. (It is officially unlocked from AT&T, etc.) The problem now comes in upgrading to 4.3. TMobile uses Kies, but Kies only wants to upgrade me to 4.1.2, which I am already on (build JZO54K.1317UCAMH3). AT&T only updates OTA. When I check for OTA update it says it is checking AT&T's servers, but I am not so sure as it never finds anything. I think it is checking TMobile servers which aren't set up for OTA or don't recognize my phone type.
Also, I went into Best Buy to the Samsung rep, and they flashed my phone with their program and put a wonderful new version of 4.1.2 over my old one (nothing changed).
I am looking for solutions that will work for my phone to get 4.3, where I can get Galaxy Gear support, the photosphere camera, spen, etc.
My first question is, if I can find a TMOBILE Rom, will it work on my AT&T Note II (similar phone, but not the same? I have the N7105). (I would like TMobile goodies on there instead of AT&T. Any custom ROMs support that?)
Second, does the AT&T build (if I can find one) work with Gear well and does the photosphere camera work well? The Samsung rep said AT&T did not work with gear well presently on Note II and I read somewhere else where the camera was not working.
Any custom ROMS I should look at that would work on my phone and get me GEAR, SPEN, PHOTOSPHERE etc? I can't seem to find that.
Any suggestions or directions I should look would well be appreciated. Thank you!
David

N7105 "officially unlocked" by AT&T? LOL, funny...you SURE its a 7105? If it is, then you still have to wait, as they havent released 4.3 for North America yet as far as i know...well they did but then pulled it right away.
if you want all that extra samsung stuff to work you need to go with a touchwiz based 4.3 custom rom. It hasnt been released yet,so ergo, its not available for developers to make a custom rom out of it (stateside anyway)
sounds like keis is working fine, bc the 7105 is the UNLOCKED LTE North American version VERSION, the 7100 is the international version without LTE, and they are diffrent.
and you actually WANT T-MOBILE bloat ware? put this in the googler " Tmobile applications apk. good luck with that bc no one ever want to bundle "branded APKs" but then you say "instead of AT&Ts, are you implying that its already on there? and you went to Best Buy? they put it on a machine?
your best bet is to just sell that thing and buy a note 3 outright, doesnt sound like you need try and flash/root stuff.

Thanks. I was just so tired of using an AT&T phone on TMobile, I thought some of the related programs might be nice, but I see your point. They do have the upgrade for AT&T now, but I am told it is sucking battery life something fierce. Per your suggestion, I am looking for a good Note 3. Thanks!

Is the SM-N950U a T-Mobile phone or just a carrier-less unlocked phone?

Hi everyone. It's been a minute since I've been here. I currently have a T-Mobile Note 3 rooted with a custom ROM (yikes...I know) that I only use for work since it's pretty freaking tough. I also have a T-mobile Note 4 that I use for when I'm not at work...also rooted with a custom ROM. Both are still going with not apparent issues but obviously they are becoming obsolete. I would like to "upgrade " to a Note 8 (T-Mobile) which eventually I'll be back here to see what great minds have accomplished for it, but as I'm looking online for purchase I get hit with different model numbers when searching for it. I doubt SM-N950T is a legit one but I see phones on sale with that description. I know for a fact the "true" model number from Samsung is SM-N950UZKATMB. Now I mostly see SM-N950U (or U1) for sale. Is that the correct (short version) of the model number for the T-Mobile version or is like the title says? If not then what is the correct one... and lets say if I do get a SM-N950U what would be the limitations of using it with T-Mobile? Difference between U and U1? Sorry I searched but I feel I would get the best answer here. Thank you very much for everyone's time!

U = Carrier branded full of bloatware whether it's AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile it doesn't matter the phone will select the correct carrier based on the sim card you put in there.. U1 = No carrier bloatware.. The N950U and U1 are not exactly made for roms and mods and such because the bootloader cannot be unlocked in neither version.. If you have T-Mobile and you want to root and do roms and mods your best bet is to get the international N950F version since the bootloader can be unlocked but I suggest if you go this route that you do a lot of research and reading and don't do what others keep doing like deleting their /efs folder and not having the original backup thereby screwing themselves and making the phone a paperweight! Just do your research and you'll be fine!

Thank you for the reply! So the U versions are gonna be the same headaches as my daughters S7E. I read that the Exynos and Snapdragon are fairly even and since I don't really use my phones for gaming then I should be good with the Exynos version. Questions though since I've never had an international model...do they allow use of T-Mobile wifi calling or do they limit any (usable) feature that you would get with the U version (besides useless bloatware)? Again, thank you.

They're the same old headaches both the U and U1 and your last questions I don't know since I don't have T-Mobile but I would assume that with root access you can do anything you want but I wouldn't count on wifi calling working unless you have their bloatware versions..
