[Q] SGS2 - not boot - after flashing CM7 over MIUI - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I first installed MIUI ROM in my SGS2.
Yesterday I try to move from MIUI to CM7.
This is what I did,
downloaded CM7 ROM for SGS2
put that in SD card
wipe data cache and dalvik cache
flash CMMOD
booted in recovery MOde
install ROM from SD card
After this, SGS2 rebooted and stuck at the logo.
I waited for a long time - hmm.. no hope!.
I turned off the mobile - removed and replaced the battery - but still no sing of booting.
I searched google abt this.., what i did is
Vol.Dwn +Pwr Butt. + Home = its shows a screen with options to rooting
Vol. UP + Pwr. butt. + Home = black screen!
Also with - Vol.Dwn + Pwr + Home, option I use Odin and flashed insecure kernel
back in my SGS2 - hoping it will boot - but never happens!
Any one of you please guide me to recover my device!
or it is possible to put stock ROM in this state?

Some users report that they have boot problems after flashing CM7 for the first time.
Did you try to flash CM7 just a second time (with a full wipe before)?
Full wipe CWM Recovery:
Main Menu - Factory reset/data reset (very important!)
Main Menu - Wipe Cache (just for sure, but already done at factory reset)
Mount/Unmount Menu - Format /System (very important!)
Advanced Menu - Wipe Davlik Cache (very important!)
This leaves internal and external SD card untouched!
Then install the ZIP image (ROM image) from the internal SD card that you have copied before.
Please do this procedure at every ROM change and you'll be fine.
If you only update the same ROM (e.g. CM7 update) it might not be necessary to do a full wipe, but if the developers recommend it, please do it.
After a ROM change you should do a battery calibration (you need root):
Install the free app "Battery Calibration" from the market.
Charge your phone to 100% (until 100% notification) at least 4 to 5 hours.
Start the app "Battery Calibraton" and initiate the calibration.
Use the phone until the battery is complete discharged (autom. shutdown).
Do not charge the phone before it has shutdown.
Then charge it completely to 100% (4 to 5 hours).
Now your battery is calibrated for that ROM.

Hi thanks for the answer!.
ya i did CM7 flash first time over the MIUI ROM.
i did all data wiping!
but still SGS2 cant able boot
any idea of glash stock rom back?

I had problems too when i flashed CM for the first time. Try to flash it again, for me it helps.

@SpaceCeph
thnks again!.
But how will i do that?
via ODIN? [I already did and flash insecure kernel - but same result!]
is i need to flash CM7 via ODIN?
i cant able to see that 'recovery' options - Vol. UP + Pwr. butt. + Home = black screen!
srry fr disturbing all of you......
i am a newbie to this, just guide me .....

Just to reset everything: I would recommend to flash a stock ROM via ODIN first, the 3 parts version of KH3 with repartition, then flash the KH3 CF-root kernel to root the device and to get CWM recovery back.
Please read the guide in the following thread carefully:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
I flashed KH3 (3-part version) with repartition (PIT file) via ODIN and after that the KH3 CF-Root kernel.
At every ROM change I do a full wipe (factory/data/cache/format system/wipe dalvik)!
I never had any problems (Litening, MIUI, Galnet MIUI, CM7, Leomar Revolution).

thnks all of you! to bring my device back!
@[email protected],@SpaceCeph - thank you for helping!
i flash XXKH3 via ODIN now phone gets booted!.
i qiuck Query - what this XXKH3 stands for ?
because first i used indian version of XXKH8 - but its fails to boot, so i tried with XXKH3 as i dont know is it support to indian version!.
so can anyone guide me wht is XXKH3 or XXKH8?
thnks again!

Good to read that you were able to "reanimate" your S2 again.
Can't say anything in detail about version numbering. What I know, the "H" stays for August.
Recommendation: If you want a rock solid but customizable ROM, try Leomar's custom based ROM with his Kitchen App.
Leomar Revolution ROM 2.6 KH3
There will be a 2.7 with KI3, Android 2.3.5 from Leomar soon.

[Q] Cognition rom installation

Hello,
I've installed the latest Cognition Rom. Before that I had DlevRom.
When I reboot my device it still runs the DlevRom animation. How do I remove it?
Also, in the Cognition installation notes it says that it does not contain some of the Samsung apps like the Social hub and Game hub, but after reboot it is still there. Why? I did Data/Cache/Delvik wipe and still it is there. Is there any way to remove all old data?
Thanks
Oren
Recovery Mounts and storage formate system data cache and if you want sd card .
Boot to download mode install stock rom install root install custom rom .
That will be a 100% wiped phone if you format sd card .
jje
Stock Rom
Where do I find stock Rom?
Should I also re-install the kernel?
Moving to a new Rom
So is it recommend to install stock rom and kernel and only then move to a new and different Rom?
No the recommendations are to follow the instructions in that roms post .
You wanted to wipe stuff if you format system cache data sd card the phone is empty no firmware no os no nothing .
jje
Moving to new Rom
I get that but I wanted to get rid from all the DlevRom boot animations etc' and it looks like the only way to do that is by flashing to stock rom and then to the desired Rom.
Two types of custom rom WIPE and NO WIPE its as simple as that .
jje
Problem
OK, so I played a bit and then restored to stock rom and kernel.
After that installed a new kernel 2.3.4 CF and then installed Cognition. Now it is stuck on the first boot up screen and nothing happens...
Wiped everything and installed again - nothing...
You wait on custom rom boot up screen 5/10 mins .
I would install stock KH3 rom via Odin and let it boot .
Root rom with CFroot KH3
Boot
Copy Cognition rom to sd card
boot to recovery
Advanced wipe dalvik cache
return wipe cache
Install zip cognition from sd card and wait for it to boot .
jje
Hope it will work
Trying to do that. Strange, it is stuck on the Samsung Galaxy opening screen (the first one - white) and nothing happens...
Hope it will work
Very strange - Cognition problem
Well, did as suggested:
Installed stock kerenl KH3 + Stock rom, then installed CF like here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1237495
Then, updated cognition after a full wipe and again, it is stuck on the first boot screen...

This is what i did .
Format sd card .
Wipe data factory reset ,
via Odin install stock KH3 from stock rom post bot and set up phone /
via Odin root from CWM and root post with KH3 v4.1 CWM root .
reboot check phone is rooted .
Copy Cognition rom to sd card .
Boot to recovery advanced wipe dalvik cache return wipe cache
install zip chose zip install wait reboot wait .
Cognition is KH3 not KI rom.

No ROM Booting

So i managed to solve the problem that i had.
When i said that i could flash only the stock one, i was flashing XXKI3 as one file after each failed attempt to flash a custom one.
So i tried and flashed another stock rom, again as 1 file. after the flash was done the phone again stucked at first screen wit the triangle.
After that i thought that something was really messed up in the phone and flashed again XXKI3 with PIT and multiple files and offcourse RE-Partition.
After that flash a stock rom with 1 file and modified bootloader from Intratech's thread, this way you can also reset the binary caunter with a jig (can find many on ebay).
After finish flashing and first boot
root with CF kernel and flash any custom rom. It worked as it should. Now i am on a custom rom and trying to see which one suits me best.
Thank Jiganet for some may be needed modified bootloader which is recommended so you can reset binary counter.
Everyone tha nk you for your suggestions and help.
any rom that i install is not getting beyond the bootlogo. i had xxki3 stock with cf-root xxki3 kernel.
every install i make full wipe on everything before(data, cache, dalvik).
any body any idea?
only stock rom working.
The first boot takes some time. Are you waiting that long?

1. Enter Clockworkmod recovery
1a. Do a Backup (not a must, but i suggest) from the cwm recovery of your current rom/settings.
2. Wipe Data/Cache Factory reset
3. Flash the new rom you want
4. Again (not needed but well..) Wipe Data/Cache Factory Reset
5. Wipe Cache
6. Advanced -> Wipe Dalvik Cache (this is why you get bootloops)
7. Reboot to system
Wait 4-5 minutes and you will have your new, shiny working rom.
Hope it helps, cheers

Mh strange, the strange is.. with the stock rom is working.
Looks like your phone dosnt like the rom you are flashing so the quesion now is:
Are you sure, you are flashing a rom your phone can read? I know the i9100G and the AT&T versions cant be flashed with the standard (i9100) S2 roms (there is a specific thread i think here on xda for those versions)
mine is an unbranded i9100 from Greece. i am flashing the correct roms.

every body read first post managed to solve this.
Hi was there a solution to this problem as I seem to get it with EVERY rom I try to install from zip?
Hi to all, this is my first Post and this is my First Android I come from an iPhone 2G, iPhone 3g, iPhone 3GS and my last phone was an iPhone 4!!! now I'm extremely happy with my new SGS2!!!
I have been searching a lot!!! for a solution for this flash loop issue,
1 - I have flash to a stock 2.3.5 KI3 samfirmware,
2- then I have Odin>PDA>cf-root-KI3-4.2.tar to root my phone.
3 - After that I downloaded 3 custom roms, DarkyROM2_KI3, VillainROM-3.0.0-signed and Cyanogen cm_galaxys2_full-112. put them on my root internal sdcard.
4 - booted to ClockworkMod Recovery menu.
5 - Wipe Data/Factory Reset
6 - Wipe Partition Cache.
7 - Install Zip from sdcard.
and every thing seems ok, but when i restart, it stays on the boot loop, even if i manage to enter to CWM Recovery menu it says that E: Can't Mount ... bla bla bla
I had been trying to put a custom rom so much that my binary counter is now on 10
I'm going to try what you wrote on the first post!
Restore to stock KI3 firmware using pit file and repartition.
after that install the cf-root kernel. Restart and try to install any custom firmware.
Hope it works
Not it did not work, Maybe the problem was Wipe Partition cache after installing new rom, going to stock and repeating
I'm having this exact same problem, please post here if you find an answer to your problem.
I first installed checkrom with no problems, then i decided to wipe and try install dlevrom but after rebooting i'm left with the same problem as above.
It's only when i flash stock 2.3.5 KI3 through odin with pit, repartition, all checked that my phone works.
I then repeat the steps of flashing cf root through odin and then try flash a custom rom, either checkrom or dlevrom and neither work.
Another try another fail!
I have no idea on what else can I do!!! tried again and nothing! I tied cf-root 4.1 and nothing and cf-root 4.2 and nothing!.
I'm having this exact same problem, please post here if you find an answer to your problem.

After i got the stuck on boot! I can restore to stock by only using the PDA, I don't need to set the pit file again!, but I'm usign all the files on Odin to see If that makes any difference but nothing!!!
I wonder how mariosraptor did it!!!! Can you throw us a light???
I have explained it on first post. Just follow step by step the first post directions.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Nope it didn't work
The steps I did:
1. Restore to stock using PIT, PDA, PHONE, CSC.
2. After it boots root the phone with cf root 4.1 for ki3
3. Use CWM Recovery to flash the new rom on internal sdcard.
I have been doing it with wipe data, wipe cache, wipe develk.
Nothing is there a step that im missing?
Thanks
SOLVED!!!!!! JAJAJA
The only problem, was one minor thing, a little thing called Bootloader!
I installed the old bootloader!
find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
And after that every thing worked perfectly, no boot loops!!!!
Hope it helps!!!

[Q] CWM fail to update?

Hi there, I need your help and advice please.
Here’s my problem. My phone is the SGS2 running KI3 rooted with CF-root KI3 flashed the secure kernel and then flashed the zImage so I still have root CWM and to get rid of the yellow triangle. I have downloaded CM nightly 88 to my laptop and transferred it to my S2 via usb cable into the download folder.
Here’s where the problem comes into play when I run CF’s CWM and choose reboot into recovery I do a wipe/factory reset / wipe cache and update via sdcard, I pick the cm88 from the download folder and it starts to update and then stops. I reboot and it’s stuck on the Samsung S2 page (boot loop). I then have to get into the recovery and restore my phone to the previous state. Can someone help me I would like to try the CM’s custom rom but don’t know what I’m doing wrong? Thanks.

me2 only stock roms work for me =(
I think there was an issue with the version of CWM used on the CF-roots since it's been modified by CF and because it's an older version.
After you've rooted with CF, try flashing a kernel on there with a newer version of CWM on there (I used codeworkx's kernel from the Cyanogenmod wiki I've attached below with CWM 4.0.1.4).
Once this kernel is on there, then try flashing the CM7 ROM as per this thread. I prefer flashing from recovery myself, but it's your call.
Make sure you flash it twice in a row if you're having issues.
The problem, as stated above is that cf root kernel installs a modified version of CWM that won't work with CM7. Another thing is you have to flash a stock KH3 because KI3 has the new bootloader (unless you flashed KI3 with the old bootloaders). Then, you have to flash the codeworkx kernel so you get a compatible version of CWM. Once in CWM clear data factory reset + clear cache partition + clear dalvik cache (from advanced).
THIS IS IMPORTANT: Flash the ROM from sd card and when finish do not reboot device, just flash it again without wiping anything in between, just 2 consecutives "install from sd card". When this is done you can reboot the system and then enter again to CWM to flash the google apps .zip file that you can download from the CM7 thread.
Hope this helped. When I flashed CM7 i had exactly the same problem and went back to stock cause it was a pain in the ass to flash it fr the first time. But once you get in CM7, everything becomes great and easy, and you can update the nighlies directly from ROM manager without doing any wiping. You just can't use ROM manager when getting to CM7 for the first time.

DO NOT use cf-root to install CM7. It's stated by Codeworkx a lot of times in CM Q&A thread. Just flash his kernel to get cwm.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693
Now you have the original cwm recovery (from Koush). Boot into recovery, Wipe data, cache, dalvik.
Install CM7 twice in a row without rebooting.
Then flash gapps (without rebooting) http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip.
Now reboot. Wait for a few mins since system has to build dalvik cache. And you're all good to go
Worried about yellow triangle? Get a usb jig.
Siyah kernel 2.0 supports CM7 and miui. So....have fun.....!!

[Q] Unstable ICS ROMs (tried many...)

Hey guys!!!
New galaxy S2 owner. I have done some searching in these forums and the threads answered many of my questions. However, I still have some newbie questions that I found unanswered. Please excuse me if my questions have been answered before but I got tired of searching
Here is the deal:
Yesterday, I flashed a CF Root with Odin3. Then used CWM to flash a wanamlite firmware. The firmware was great but I didn't like that it still had TW. So I dl'ed another firmware to the internal SD card and flashed again using CWM. I then flashed a couple of other ROMS and I noticed that after the first wanamlite flash, the new ROMs were unstable with many error messages that some OS processes have stopped etc.
I got back home, flashed to stock with Odin3 and the phone got stuck at the second samsung logo. I followed some community steps (thanks XDA) like disabling all kies processes from TM, wiping data/cache, then boot in DL mode and flash the stock ROM using Odin3 which worked.
I then Flashed a CF Root again and used CWM to flash a Spike Pure ICS ROM v5 which was great but I get occasional error messages like 'gallery stopped' or some other error message when I try to set contact photos. It just lags, blackscreen then comes back with the 'Unfortunately, the process had stopped'.
My questions: is this because of the previously flashed firmware that this is happening or is it that those ICS ROMs have these issues commonly? Did anyone have this experience before? What do you advice before flashing to a new ROM going back to stock or going straight from the current? Doesn't Odin3 technically wipe everything back to stock?
WIPE WIPE WIPE.
Go into recovery. Data/factory reset.
Advanced, Wipe dalvic cache. Mounts and storage, format system. Its a standard procedure going from one OS to another OS. You can then either flash a firmware zip from recovery or an .tar file from Odin.
Then to be on the safe side factory reset once again.

Wich fw do you have?
Make a deep clean with odin an flash on the latest ics version (lp9 is a good one)..then flash (if you want) a custom rom..
My experience with custom roms: one of the best rom samsung based (ics 4.0.3) is the foxhound greyfox v2..if you want a pure ics rom flash the omega aokp rom (ics 4.0.4)..
Try then to change kernel..siyah is the best for both roms..
P.s. sorry for my bad english

After LP7 should be staple enough for daily use .However you are using custom roms and you should read carefully each roms thread before flashing .
You are probably suffering from flashing multiple roms and leaving bits behind as well = clean wipe .
jje.
Can someone give me a clear full wipe procedure? I always wiped data/factory rest/wiuped chaceh and dalvik... but what else? a step by step procedure would be helpful!!
I currently have Spike Pure ICS v 5.
What do you mean by Odin3 'deep clean'?

so:
1. Recovery mode > format user data > wipe cache > clear dalvik > format system (from moutns and storage)
2. Download mode > flash stock ROM using odin 3
Did I get it right? Was there something i didn't wipe?
Before you flash a new rom, make sure you answer the requirements. Some ICS roms need to be flashed in specific way.
The way of doing a full wipe is you go in Clockwork mode, wipe data/factory reset, you wipe cache partition, then go to advanced wipe Dalvik and Battery stats, then go in mounts and storage ( i think ) and you wipe the cache from there, but nothing else in mounts and storage. If you wipe anything else there's a high percent of bricking your phone. If this doesnt help you, I doubt that anyone could give you any clearer instructions.
Good luck.
DONT FORMAT SYSTEM.
....................................
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
Followed by root and custom rom if you so wish .

i always do personally.
I got tempted and formatted system/cache/data but now i cannot flash from my internal sd card.. I get errors and 'installation aborted' if i try to do it from CWM... does that mean formatting those 3 means Odin3 is the only way? Cus I'm not home and I don't have odin3 on me.... LOL!
OJ77 said:

Did you format sd card and totally wipe the lot = nothing on the phone .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
At this point you have no OS on the phone nor kernel rooted nor CWM .
Hence
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .

I did a 'full wipe' by doing t his:
1. Boot into CWM: wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, wipe battery stats, wipe system/data/cache from mounts.
2. Reboot into DL mode, flash stock ROM using Odin3.
3. Repeat step 1
4. flashed spike ICS v 7.3 using CWM. Stable so far.
Thank you!

I agree! I don't like ICS because is still unstable! My battery lasts very short with ICS and the phone overheats.
Moreover I hate the browser! I mean, The Galax S2 with GB still has the smoother browser of all the smartphones out there, and Samsung with ICS update messed it up! Now is laggy with micro stutters! Don't understand why!

The firmware was great but I didn't like that it still had TW.

You didn't need to go through all that trouble just because you didn't want TW (which I also hate, btw).
You could simply have installed another launcher (such as Go Launcher EX, ADW, etc) from Play Store and, since you were already rooted, uninstalled TW using Titanium Backup afterwards. It has to be in that sequence (install new then uninstall old).
this way you can have whatever ROM + kernel combination you like, and still use whatever launcher you prefer.

Phone stuck before boot animation after flashing custom ROM

Hi, I'm getting stuck at the black screen just before the boot animation (the one that says "samsung galaxy SIII gt-i9300"), after flashing custom rom via CWM. Maybe I'm a complete noob but I think something is wrong in my phone.
I had installed MIUI official before, then removed it to get warranty back and sent phone to samsung service to fix the my broken simcard compartment.
After getting my phone back, I tried to install MIUI again and got stuck.
The strange thing is how fast ROM is installed in CWM, less than 10 seconds...
No error message and says install is complete
have retried 7 times now, using this:
- Odin 3.04
- CF-Auto-Root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273)
- CF-Root 6.4 - SuperSU+CWM5.5+CWMManager (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238)
- ClockworkMod Touch 6.0.3.2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1719744)
- ClockworkMod 6.0.3.6 - Touch and Non-Touch (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2200501)
ROMs:
- MIUI Official 3.8.16
- MIUI Official 3.7.12
- CyanogenMod 9.1.0 (stable)
what I do:
- boot to bootloader
- flash CF root with Odin (Auto reboot and F.reset Time are checked)
- reboot, then shutdown
- boot to bootloader
- flash CWM with Odin (Auto reboot and F.reset Time are checked) also tried to install with ROM manager
- reboot, then shutdown
- boot to recovery
- wipe data/ factory
- wipe cache
- wipe dalvik
- install zip from sdcard (internal) <-- strange thing here is how fast it is installed, less than 10 seconds...
- wipe data/ factory, cache, dalvik again
- reboot
- got stuck.
- flash samsung stock ROM I9300UBALE6_I9300ZTOALE7_ZTO (brazilian 4.0.4, phone was in that version when installed MIUI first time)
Don't know what to do now, please help!
Does it boot with stock roms?
Please DO NOT flash anything older than 4.1.2 stock...
If all zips opnly take 10 seconds, perhaps theyre getting corrupt on your memory. How are you getting the zips on your phone?

yes, it boot with stock rom.
I just copy/paste files from windows, always done that, but now that you say, md5 is diferent...
I'll check stock ROM and file copy.
Thanks!
It was the file copy messing with the zip...
used adb push and all OK now!
Thanks again!
