I have an unlocked, SG2 on O2 contract from phones4U.
my phone says that I have Android version 2.3.3 installed.
(I searched for updates the day I got the phone, last thursday and installed the update it found, this took me up to 2.3.3 from 2.2.2 I think.)
When I look now, there are no updates available.
I see some people have 2.3.4 or even 2.3.5? why is that?
What is the latest version available for UK unlocked SG2s?
thanks.
If you read the forums you will see the solution .
One you get an update when O2 update or phones 4u .
Two alternatives are unofficial updates that may break your warranty .
jje
Like JJe said i agree with him.
Now if you are into rooting and want to try the latest firmware that comes with the roms go for it..
But you will lose your warranty and do your research first before you go ahead and root your phone....there is always way round unrooting and keeping your warranty but if you dont mind and you know what your doing go ahead and root and enjoy the goodies in custom roms..
im using VR 3.0 and before that batista rom and they are good as gold..
if you need any help just give me a shout
Thanks for the replies guys, but what I'm asking is which firmware version should I have, is 2.3.3 the most recent available in the UK without rooting and installing a custom rom etc.
If so, I will wait for an update from O2.
cheers.

Without asking each provider what is your latest firmware its impossible to tell .
The providers roms post in dev section may give a better clue .
Probable any upgrades in the pipeline will be replaced by the new 2.3.5 .
jje
if you stay on official carrier firmware through kies, you'll always have the most uptodate version for your carrier. it will be months behind what'ss available through unofficial methods

Hi guys,
This may be an absolute stupid question about firmwares but I don't understand why some people are able to updated to 2.3.4 or even 2.3.5 whereas my O2 branded handset is so far behind and is only on 2.3.3 and KE7
Anyone know why and how these firmware gets rolled out to different phones/providers?
Different firmwares for different regions. You can always flash a firmware of different region which may be 2.3.5, when your country/carrier might not have the latest one available.
Like, I am in India, using KI4 2.3.5, which is an European ROM as my country doesn't have the latest ROM available yet, officially.

I'm afraid if you want to wait for official O2 updates via Kies then you'll be in for a long wait my friend.
If you want the latest and greatest firmwares then I would suggest you read the 1st 3 posts of Intratech's thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278.
Then read them again and then read them again! It's not as complicated as some make out.
Then decide if you want to take the plunge and take control of your own updates using Odin. I was a total noob and did it and I now now flash the latest firmware as soon as the legend that is Intratech posts them.
You can also get rid of the O2 branding if you want to.
Alternatively you can get the latest O2 branded firmware from Intratech's thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928 but that's so far behind it's almost embarassing.

Thanks for that, I used to have it updating via Odin but decided to go back to the Kies route to wait for the official upgrades. Silly move by me.
I'll update it to 2.3.5 tonight - thanks
It'll be like having a new phone coming from KE7.

Hey guys ive had this phone for a good while now, i keep hearing people upgrading their phones to this version and that... and now i see people upgrading "officially" to ICS android, how come that everytime i check samsung skies it says my phone is up to date with android version 2.3.4?
Are these updates trully official? My phone is unlocked so thats not an issue, i feel like ive been missing out alot of stuff :\
Any info regarding this is welcome with my best regards.
why not dl any of official rooms like LP7/8 n flash with odin ?
There is probably not an official ICS release for your carrier or region and there hasn't been an update since GB 2.3.4, you aren't alone in this Bell Canada hasn't ever updated their phones via Kies from 2.3.3 and likely never will, this doesn't prevent you from using Odin to upgrade from GB to ICS, if you do it with an official version you wont end up rooted and you wont increase your counter, it may be quicker to do this instead of waiting, you can always go back and upgrade via Kies if/when your carrier/region receives an official update.
2.3.4 is the latest GB version for unlocked S2's in the UK. Samsung have realeased ICS to the mobile operators first. Their reason for not releasing it for unlocked phones yet is that they need all the mobile operators to verify it works on their networks. Seems reasonable to me.
You can always root and install one of the many ICS custom roms that are already available. Personally, I've tried a couple but will be sticking with GB for the time being. It's faster and has better battery life for me.
HTH
Maybe because you live in Outer Mongolia or you have a special version of the SGSII.
You need to give a bit more detail of your country, the model and the firmare.
Settings -> About phone
Model Number?
Bseband version?
Kernel version?
Build version?
You say that the phone is unlocked, was it locked to a network or has it always been unlocked?
Hey guys thanks a bunch for all your replies, i live in Portugal and my samsung galaxy s2 is unlocked, i find it quite shocking that UK is facing the exact same problem... maybe i should get it rooted on this current version? will i loose warranty if i do that?
Ive got the exact same problem except mine was bought from Greece. This blows.

thanks for the info, ive been reading a bit of that thread but i would like an official version of ICS for portugal ill let it get more stable too, i really dont want to format my phone just to switch back because of some issues ppl report with some of those versions but thanks anyways.
I guess samsung galaxy s2 newer firmwares are not released yet to europe, imo samsung should have done more with a phone of this performance... and price.
dont bring whole europe into it
its specific parts that dont have it yet. uk unlocked is already out few days back.
get checkfus download to see when you get official ICS for your region.

CSC is not updates its the list of local area network settings .
No you may not receive updates . You need to present the correct codes to the update server and its possible flashing another rom may not get updates ..
There are only two routes
One wait for your official updates .
Or join XDA Developers forum and flash stock rom on day of release ..
Example
Your phone official JB update November
XDA stock JB available September .

Your firmware is from Taiwan..and for it the latest version is what you are currently using..however you dont need to wait for updates you can download firmware for United Kingdom the latest is I9300XXBLG8..you can download it from here..
http://samsung-updates.com/get/58/Samsung_Firmware_GT-I9300_BTU_I9300XXBLG8_Android_4_0_4.html
then flash it via odin...search these threads for the method to do so..
Hi man, Unlike iphone, offical rom is always the worst one.It usually uses more memory and have bad battery management. You can try another rom such as mike's.

Thank you! I am not too familiar with flashing with Android again because it is something new and if anything were to happen I wouldn't know how to fix it since I have been an iPhone user. Is flashing firmware any different from jailbreaking the iPhone? - in terms of being safer. Also, how can I be 100% sure that the UK version will work on my phone as well as keep my unlock.

Flashing the firmware is 100% safe if you follow the steps..it does not root your phone so it is not jailbreaking...so you will also not loose your warranty...
the firmwares are almost the same for every region, samsung being an a***le released different firmwares for different regions with different CSC....
but i am quite sure it will work on you region as you are already using Taiwan firmware in Canada...in any case download the Taiwan specific firmware also..so if anything goes wrong you can revert back...
by the way I am in India using BTU firmware..
Me too...
Along the same lines, I have an I-9300 sgs3 with South Africa firmware (XFE), i9300xxale9, but I'm using it in the United States, on AT&T, and am not able to receive updates thru either Kies or Update menu. I will NOT be traveling outside the US anytime soon. What should I load that would let me receive updates here in the States OTA?
Hello guys!
I have Galaxy S3 I9300 GSMH.
It's unbranded, i made a research in the forum and it's supposed to be a factory unlocked phone. following the coment "But as such there is no restriction to use any ROM for any country if your device is unlocked(carrier restriction free)" by dr.ketan in http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1801022
My actual firmware installed is the UBBLG2. It's running ICS 4.0.4.
So, here is the thing, I need to know if I can stall any Official Firmware from Samsung with Jelly Bean 4.1.1.
1. What Official firmware should I install?
2. Should I change the CSC too? indicated in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1646610
3. Can I install the latest Firmware from the I9300UBBLG2 - ICS 4.0.4? Or do I need to update to another firmware version before going for the 4.1.1?
5. will this affect future update notifications by Samsung and Android?
Looking at these site and post we know the lastest firmware is I9300XXDLIB. Should I go with this one?
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1646610
Will be this useful to root 4.1.1? http://getmovil.com/android/galaxy-s3-root/
Last thing. OR should I wait for the 4.1.1 release to this baseband version I9300UBBLG2 ?
Take care guys and thanks for all your help.

YES
1. What Official firmware should I install?
Only one JB official the Polish release .
2. Should I change the CSC too? indicated in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1646610
If you want to or have network problems .
3. Can I install the latest Firmware from the I9300UBBLG2 - ICS 4.0.4?
You can but why //
Or do I need to update to another firmware version before going for the 4.1.1?
No
5. will this affect future update notifications by Samsung and Android?
Yes no updates
Will be this useful to root 4.1.1? http://getmovil.com/android/galaxy-s3-root/
Use root from XDA only see the INDEX.

Thanks for your reply JJEgan
so to make a complete picture we got.
1. I can install JB 4.1.1 Official Firmware Polish Release.
2. I don't have to change the CSC. That must remain untouched.
3. Why will this affect future updates if it is a Official Firmware used on a Factory unlocked I9300? so I won't ever get updates for bug fixes and improvements? How will I handle that?
And
4. JB is supposed to be released on the international Galaxy S3. Why do you say it's never coming to my baseband? being this a international factory unlocked.
5. I've seen too many people in the forum having issues installing JB in their Galaxy S3 like battery drain, Wi-Fi issues etc. That's why question #3. Will i have these issues too with no bug fix updates?
Thanks

It is being rolled out .

Baseband is nothing to do with firmware .

Your choice make your mind up wait for official update for your phone and as you don't understand the basics that may be best .
Or read and learn and flash stock rom from XDA ,

Thank again for your help, I don't want to bother you, but you make me feel confused.
First you told me that JB 4.1.1 "will not be released its ICS ."
But you do not clarify Why this official firmware from Samsung does affect future updates. I mean the Reason. WHY?
And then you do not answers my question and just told me "Your choice make your mind up wait for official update for your phone and as you don't understand the basics that may be best ." even when you said before "will not be released its ICS ."
If there is something else i should know please point me in the right direction, i just want to know and learn more to be sure before installing because it doesn't make sense installing JB if you wont ever get updates from Samsung or android for bug fixes and improvement updates.
Sorry if I'm bothering you, don't take it personal.
Repeat you need to read and learn .
Update path official via Kies or OTA OK .
No problem whenever the update is released for your phone you get it .
Alternative via XDA and flash stock rom on day of release no waiting or custom rom .
Example official JB you let us say six weeks wait .
XDA has stock JB released for Poland you can install that .
But you may then lose your official upgrade path as the codes no longer match as you do not have official firmware for your phone .
First you told me that JB 4.1.1 "will not be released its ICS >> no sorry you are confused .
Official Kies and OTA upgrades are not part of XDA .
BASICS SGS3 I9300 International Only .
