3 Button Boots into Android System Recovery instead of Download Mode - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says, I'm trying to flash 2.3.5 but when I press the three buttons I get the Android System Recovery 3e screen with 4 options instead of Download Mode. How can I fix this?

Hold volume DOWN + Home + Power in that order. Keep ALL pressed until DL Mode, then release all.

Thanks, I was still using the volume up from the first time I rooted.

yes Volume up will take you into recovery (which will be stock recovery unless you install a custom one)
Volume down will take you into download mode.

[Q] Flashing a backup with MIUI

After trying out MIUI i want to go back to Checkrom but there seems to be no recovery mode so i cant restore the backup i made with CWM.
Is there a way to flash the backup on my phone rather than reflashing Checkrom via Odin?
Thanks
Have you tried booting into recovery mode using Vol + and home then pushing the power button?

I've tried it with vol + but the phone just boots normally. I was under the impression vol - takes it in to download mode, i've not heard of pressing them both, i'll give it a go.
[Edit] Just retried regular vol + method and it worked, i must have made an error somehow the first time.
My bad, meant Vol up + home + power.
Just flash kernel with cwm

home and volume up not working

Hi everyone,
I've created this thread becauce I am not sure if this has been mentioned.
I just recieved my new galaxy S3 (3 weeks agao) with french operator (Bouygues rom so nekwork or SIM locked)
I've rooted it one vecause I wanted to use it abroard with ODIN.
Since a few weeks; I've have some issues:
galaxy S3 reboot constantly (well some time)
bottom Volume Up doesn't work (but will work to start le recorery mode)
Home doesn't work
I wolud like to know if this issue commes from the oot I made , and if this can be fixed?
version of android is4.0.0.
The mobile has just been rooted once, I've still have the 'operator logo".
The mobile is saying 'sim locked" because I have recenty done a updrade of the software.
I wanted to root it again with ODIN, but ODIn do not recognise the port com when the mobile is on recovery mode (it does on normal mode).
If someone can help me, thad would be great.
thanks
Your phone needs to be in download mode for Odin to recognize it. As far as the vol+ key and home key not working ... they should be. If your stock unrooted right now you can try to return it. If not.. try to get back to stock and ... return it. Those keys should be working.

Go to recovery mode... If you have rooted your phone than it should boot in Clockworkmode recovery. now push VOL UP key than VOL DOWN key than again VOL UP key... it will give you a notification on the bottom of the screen saying "HOME BUTTON ENABLED"... there you go...

But I don't understand!!!
When I press ' power + Vol UP+ Home" I am on "Android system recovery <e3>" mode.
I can not use Volume to move up....
What do you mean "
If you have rooted your phone than it should boot in Clockworkmode recovery. now push VOL UP key than VOL DOWN key than again VOL UP key... "????
Or " move the highlighted selection bar"?? I don not have that option?
Your phone needs to be in download mode for Odin to recognize it! What can i do to be in download mode ? Is it power + Vol UP+ Home". If this is the case, then it doesn't work...
Thanks again

AAAA PWR + VOL Down + Home = download mode .
Root plays no part in using with ODIN .
Does not reconise a port usual reasons not a motherboard port no USB drivers installed not Samsung Cable ..
Judged by your symptoms either phone is faulty or firmware/root is faulty .

Hi,
I can not use Volume to move up....so I can't move through the menus on the recovery mode.
CWM manager is installed but I cannot reboot the phone on downlad mode ( the phone is saying " this version of CWM manager should be used with CF-root v5.0 or newer. It appears you are running a different kernel. various features has been disabled.")
when PWR + VOL Down + Home = download mode; is only rebooting on the normal mode.
I hope this is only only an issue this the soft and not not phone....

Honestly I have no ideas what he meant by pressing volume up, then down, then up again- all that does is go through the selections.. also root doesn't give you CWM, that's something you have to flash or install.
But to answer your question about how to get into download mode- its the exact opposite of recovery. From power off- hold volume down+home+power... voilĂ  download mode. Odin will now work and recognize your device.
And you do not have CWM installed. That's why you are getting limited options in CWM Manager... that and your phone's current recovery is Android System 3e Recovery

You can enter the recovery mode by vol up+home key+power key..
Just give it a try. I did that once by mistake and it turned off the hard keys in my phone. When I did it again it turned back on..
Who knows if it will work.. it withered for me..

After you enter the volume keys like you described you will have the bottom option highlighted.. "advanced". Nothing more. I feel bad for not seeing what your talking about. The only thing the volume buttons do, is navigate the highlighted bar up and down. I wish someone else would come in here and confirm so I dont feel like I'm crazy

Its not me that has the hardware defect. The other user was having issues but he doesn't even have CWM installed. I also noticed I am running a different version of CWM- v6.0.1.2 .. yours appears to be v6.0.0.0 (hard to tell from the video)

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but couldn't the OP just install a compatible CWM using ADB? Seeing as how he can't get into download mode since he can't continue past the warning message using Vol+ button, ADB seems like the only viable method.
That should work!

Sorry but this not working, and I still have the home key not working.
But since yesterday, le Vol up is working (i did not do anything).
The other thing, before when I was pressing VolDown + Home + Power, le phone was rebooting. Now I can get to the option:
press Vol up to carry on or Vol down to cancel. But the phone do not respond...
what's ADB ?

[Q] Help with Rooting Stock Gingerbread - its half-rooted

Alright, so I'm just trying to root the stock rom of Gingerbread 2.3.5 on this phone,
I read the howto's and one of my biggest questions is - am I going to have to use Odin each time I want to enter cwm? because at this point the only way I can enter Cwm recovery is through flashing the cwm_recovery_all.tar through Odin but it only works once or twice.
The normal way from the phone powered off is to (use the three finger method) :: hold volume up and down an the power button,,, and keep holding till there Samsung comes up then flashes black screen,,, then release power button while continuing to hold volume up and down till it enters recovery mode
...
Though most all custom ROMs have the option when powering off the phone with a long press,, "reboot" : and chose "recovery"
.

Yes that's the exact guide, I'm using a Win XP VM and using the ODIN 1.84 - and I have everything installed, the custom recovery just doesn't like to stay on..
. Unplug your phone and click RESET in Odin. Repeat Step 5 to get the phone back into download mode and recognized by Odin. Using the PDA button, navigate to the "stock_kernel.tar.md5" file you downloaded earlier, select it, and press START. You'll again be notified in Odin once this process has completed (succeeded 1 / failed 0).
9. Unplug your phone and re-insert the battery.
10. Press and hold BOTH volume buttons. While holding them, press the power button. Hold all three simultaneously until you see "SAMSUNG" appear TWICE. This will boot your phone into CWM 2.5 red recovery. If your phone boots up normally here and not into recovery, just wait for it to boot up and then power it down and try again. It may take a couple tries for you to get it right.
11. Using the volume rocker, navigate down to "Install zip from sdcard." Highlight it and press the power button to select.
12. Navigate to "choose zip from sdcard" and select with the power button.
13. Navigate to the "su-2.3.6.1.x.zip" file that you downloaded earlier and select it. Scroll to "Yes," and use power button to select.
14. When you're advised of completion, press the MENU softkey to go back to the previous CWM Recovery screen, then highlight and select "reboot system now."

I did this, and made sure it installed, I have superuser installed and working and I can reset it to where the Samsung will appear twice, but when I do it, and it appears twice, it never goes into CWM recovery.. always stock...
You need a custom kernel for cwm to stick. You should be able to boot into cwm after the initial flash (Odin with battery out then 3 finger to boot), but it won't stick without a custom kernel.

thanks, yeah I just figured it out, its weird that when the phone is completely shut off I do the volume up then press power button on, it takes me to fastboot, but if I keep holding volume up and release the power and push power button for the second time then it enters recovery every time, kind odd to me but it works
ok I was playing around again entering recovery manually and now I can`t everytime I hold volume up and power button and goes to fastboot, then I did the second press of the power goes right to fastboot again, is there something jack up with my phone?
hmm that kinda odd... what ROM are you trying to flash?
From bootloader screen use vol up twice then power, or vol dwn twice then power.

[GUIDE] How to Enter ODIN and Recovery Modes on Verizon Galaxy S4

Not sure if this is the proper section for this but thought I would post this here as I'm sure it would highly assist people in development and other tasks. This is the button combinations you need to enter each mode.
ODIN/Download Mode
Make sure your device is completely off
Key(s): Volume Down
While holding this key down simultaneously press the Power button until you see a disclaimer on the screen
Then let go of both buttons and press Volume Up to accept the disclaimer
Once the green robot is visible on the screen this indicates that handset is in now ODIN/Download mode
Recovery Mode
Make sure your device is completely off
Key(s): Volume Up
While holding this key down simultaneously press the Power button
As soon as the phone vibrates, let go of the Power button but keep holding Volume Up
When you see the "Samsung Galaxy S4" logo (not just the word "Samsung"), right after that, the next screen you should see is your recovery
Don't let go of Volume Up until you see your recovery
It's not necessary to hold the Home button to boot into Odin mode, the combination for recovery is correct though.
So just power/volume down for Odin and home/volume up/power for recovery

Home isn't necessary for recovery either. I just hold power and volume up, when the phone vibrates I let go of power and continue to hold volume up until I see the booting recovery message in the upper left.
So nothing? Nobody can offer some advice?
Moto not working
So I'm having no success with this. I went through all the steps including flashing the pre-release tar ball (MD2). All this went without fail, however once I launched Motochop and pressed enter to root. I get line Daemon not on. run port 5873. Daemon connected or on and then thats it. I don't get a notification at any point prior to me pressing enter or afterwords that I need to accept. It just stops and I get "you should reboot" from the notification bar. Have I done something wrong? I went through all the prior steps several times and I keep getting this error message.

Don't just push them. You need to hold both until you feel the phone vibrate. Then you can let go of the power button, but keep holding volume down until download mode starts.

Odin Error
I am having one heck of a time flashing to the GS4 with Odin. I follow all of the steps to a "t" but cannot get the custom kernal onto the device. I'm having no problem getting to download mode and all the setting look to be correct, however when I start the Odin process I end up with a "fail" every time. I have been looking around the web for a few days for an answer, but so far this looks like the best thread to get help.
Make sure the kernel you are trying to flash is compatible with the Odin method. A lot of kernels can be flashed via custom recovery. The first thing I would do is uninstall and then reinstall the Samsung drivers. Make sure you have the latest and it is compatible with your computer OS. You would be surprised how often drivers can screw up Odin.
