question about firmware abreviation and origin. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

my phone's build name is i9100BVKD7
I wanted to search root kernel for it and noticed I can't find any for this version; then I saw on samfirmware a post about the newest fw explaining the abbreviations:
Firmware version: I9100XXKI3.
XX = Europe.
K = 2011.
I = September.
3 = Version.
on google I get no result of my version.
the thing is that I had a s2 from someone and it was shutting down with no reason on stock and modified rom.. so he changed my phone to this one and from what I see it's from april, that doesn't bother me, but what region does BV stand for then?
and what root kernel should I use?

[Q] NOOB QUESTION: rooted phone: how to update to new firmware/kernel versions?

Hi guys,
I successfully managed to root my UK SGS2.
Now system info says:
Baseband version: I9100XXKE4
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513
[email protected] #2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XWKE7
And here's my questions:
1- how can I now update the phone to new firmware versions?
2- can I still use Kies or will I lose the root or brick the phone?
3- is the version I have installed the last one?
4 basically can anybody give me some "definitions" so that I don't mess up anymore baseband/kernel/firmware/rom concepts?
thanks a lot in advance!
XWKE7 is latest for now.
You can update using ODIN or KIES. If you install stock ROMs, you will lose root access, but it's easy enough to regain it with CF-Root
ROM = PDA = main system software image
RADIO = MODEM = the software used to control the baseband on the phone
SBL = BOOTLOADER = the secondary bootloader used when loading up the phone
CSC = Carrier/Network specific settings and customisations (Carrier Specific Customisations is the abbreviation iirc)
So in order to understand what's my latest firmware version I have to look at this?
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XWKE7

So if mine is GINGERBREAD.BUKE1...?
I'm trying to get my head around it all, and frankly vodafone seem to have made it more confusing. Why couldn't Samsung force them to jsut have the phone with no crap on it in the first place!
Hey pulser ! I come from the HTC Hero board, so I'm a little confused with those step for flashing the SGS2 but I'm happy anyway to see people I already know
So I'm a bit lost and ask myself if flashing in this way will work ? PDA : XWKE8 / PHONE : XXKE4 / CSC : Default (I can't find a CSC that fits for a french SFR phone...)
Sorry for my odd english :/
How do you update the firmware?
my current build is : GINGERBREAD.XWKDD.
When I plug in the usb it shows the files in the phone but does not come up with any firmware update option?

[Q] Difference between new Firmwares.

Im getting a little confused between all these new firmwares that keep appearing.
First things first, what do the code at the beggining actually mean?
XWKI4
For example.
Seen as im base din the UK, what is the default code for here.
Sorry for probably such a simple question, but im a newbie to Samsung, Ask me anything about SE Codes etc and id be abl to tell you in seconds!
Kernel codes etc .

That clears things up a little!
I9100XWKI4 Is European then?
This is standard across most Samsung Phones.
I'll use I9000XWKE3 as an example.
I9000 = Model #
XW = Carrier/Area code. For example, XW = Europe, UG = Bell Mobility Canada.
K = Year = 2011
E = Month = May
3 = Revisions that month.
A lot of people on here think the last 3 digits are important and that if you have 2 KG3 firmware that they are the same. However, this is not the case.
You need to go by all 5 letters due to the fact that each firmware is customized by different groups at Samsung. And to prove this, just look at KG2. There are 2.3.3 KG2's and there are 2.3.4 KG2's.
It's actually possible that one area's KG2 could have been newer than another area's KG4. The best way to check, is to look at the build date in the Build.prop for each firmware.
I hope this clears it up for you.

Rom versions..

Just another quick question... How come 2.3.4 is Ki4 and 2.3.5 is Ki3 ?

[Q] What is this XXKH3 XXKI3 XXKH4 ?

As title says. What are those things? Every ROM has one, but what are the differences?
Know this is a pretty newbie doubt but I'm new to GS2!
Thanks guys!
Those are specific firmwares w/c a custom rom is basing their ROMs..

They describe the firmware version of the ROM.
The XX part changes per region.
The K means the most of the K--. A L-- would be greater than a K--.
Next of importance is the H. Once again, a KI3 is greater than a KH3, as I comes after H in the alphabet. But LH3 would be greater than KI3.
Lastly, look at the number, of which goes up in importance. KH4 is greater than KH3 for example. But, KI1 would be greater than a KH7.
I hope that helps a bit. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
So KI3>KH4 ?
And what is the newest firmware?

Ki3 is the latest firmware. Any KI- is greater than the KH- firmwares.
Thanks for your help!!
Make sure to also read the Android version of the firmware if there is other versions comes with different Android version. For example: KI4 is Android 2.3.4 but KI3 is Android 2.3.5. Therefore, in this case, KI3 is the latest ROM in terms of Android version although the number is lower than KI4.
XXKH3 XXKI3
XX = depend on Country can be DC , ZS
K = Number Of year 11 is 2011 (a=1..K=11)
H,I = Month H = 8 , I = 9
very confusing nomenclature for a newbie like me.
ok...so next noobie question.
I've read up on this ROM " [ROM][2.3.5][KJ1] Simple & Clean v1.2 'Performance + Battery Friendly "
and want to get it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320328
But before I flash it, i want to know if it will work on my phone?
Right now this is my phone...
Kernel: 2.6.35.11 - ninphetamine -2.1.3
buildnumber: gingerbread.xxki3
phone: xxki3
csc: xxki3
rom: sipocatxxki3 base odex.
what makes you think it wont??

Go to sammobile.com and look for the region you like. Download their official Samsung firmware and flash it via Odin.
It's perfectly safe since they are official. I came from 4.0.4 and flash a different region firmware 4.1.1. All went well. HTH.
Be sure to factory reset it after flashing the new firmware so that it will lock to the new region code

Thanks a lot for your kind reply.
As long as you are using the I9300, and you are flashing a ROM for the I9300 then it will be fine.
