hi guys,
i´ve recently got an tab 10.1 and, of course, one of the first things i tried was streaming from my NAS.
Unfortunately this doesn´t seem to work all that well - no matter how i connect (uPNP or filebrowser), the videos lag like hell. Its a like a really slow dia-show.
On my Nexus 1 (2.3) it works like a charm (using the same apps and of course WIFI)
Has somebody experienced similar behavior?
No problems with my Synology NAS and Dice Player. I use ES file explorer to connect to my folders (smb).
Edit: Back when I used Moboplayer, I think I remember problems with lags unless you force software decoding when streaming movies. You can enable it in the settings.
No problem with my tab and NAS either. I'm using cifs module and mount Nas volume directly or just use upnp protocol and stream movies.
Try to download that movie to your tab and then play it... Would it still lag? If so that this is not a steaming problem but video format/tab player thingy.
And If it would play fine then start looking at network setup.

yes, locally they all play without problems - the weird thing is, that it works just fine on my Nexus phone. Using the exact same setup and apps...
i tried it with SMB and uPNP and various videoplayers - they all load up the movie, but the playback is unbearably slow.
The tab is also "fresh out of the box", so no modifications/rooting or anything else that might cause that.
but obviously its not a general honeycomb problem
ok, its a player issue! "Dice" works right away (thanks!) and "MX Video Player" works, if you force "S/W Decoder" in the settings --> smooth playback

can you test your wifi speed? Just time some big file download.
Just as example, using cifs module my transfer speed is about 1.3Mbyte per sec. Ghost commander with build in smb protocol is around 2.0 Mbyte per sec.
Laptop with N wifi goes around 9.0 Mbyte per second.

First of all, I am grateful that the vibrant can play divx encoded video files; I don't think I could live without it. Unfortunately it cannot stream them.
A solution is to start downloading the Avi and then [while its downloading] switch over to the Files application, go to the ".downloadTemp" folder [you need to first enable "hidden files" in the options], and open the incomplete *.avi in the stock video player application. This works wonderfully and i can instantly start watching a video AS IT DOWNLOADS.
UNFORTUNATELY, the video player app will not let me fast forward. Sometimes it lets me rewind, but it mostly takes me back to the very beginning of the video if I even touch the trackbar. And yes, for those who are wondering, the Video WAS sufficiently done downloading to reach the part of the video i wanted to fast forward to. I obviously wasn't trying to forward to the end of the video with only 10% of it downloaded.
I looked in the android market for alternative video players, and the only one that REMOTELY worked was Rockplayer. It would let me fast forward and rewind, except it was really glitchy and full of ads. I prefer just watching it on the perfectly stable stock Player than to use a glitchy one.
So i come to you guys, hoping for a solution. Any Ideas? Are there any other Video Players that i missed that will let me fast forward and rewind incomplete video files as they download?
(Oh, and if you're wondering the source of the videos, i usually just watch divx movies and shows that have been uploaded to megaupload, such as: megaupload.com/?d=T5D3YV8R&w=719&h=349)

Solved: VPlayer and Moboplayer support HTTP Streaming for DviX
I have read a few posts similar to yours, complaining about streaming divx avi files.
I myself do NOT have any issues with this and have tested a fair share of my 900gigs of divx avi's. I DO have issues stream MKV files while I have seen others report that they can stream MKVs.
What does this mean?
This means that AllShare is no different then any of the other DLNA based streaming software out there, there are compatibility problems that need to be worked out. Usually this is sorted out on the streaming server side and not the player.
I am saying that the software you are using to stream is more then likely causing the problem.
Give Twonky a try. Thats what I use and as I said I can stream divx/xvid avi's without issue. The downside is that Twonky is not free, the upside is that there is a 30 day trial to test and see if it resolves your issue. If it does, I dont think the price for Twonky is that bad, I paid $15. If you want a free one (they update compatibility less frequently) just google search DLNA or UPNP streamers and test a few out. XBMC is a good open source alternative, but is really not an option if you are using a windows box. XBMC is a program and not a service so you would be running a full media player at all times. XBMC can be setup as a standalone in linux though, if you have a spare PC to use.

AHHHHH.... I have been looking for a way to do this as well. HTTP streaming should no longer be an issue when 2.2 drops as sites like quicksilverscreen and the like all work fine through Flash 10.1 in 2.2. I have tested this with a Nexus1 and it works beautifully even over 3g.
I still want to have access to my home server though as I have close to a terabyte of video and my system is setup to auto download shows as they come out.
I am hoping to get my hands on a deODEXed version of the AllShare app to see if I can remove the WIFI only restriction. After that it should just be a matter of setting up a VPN back to my server.
Right, megavideo should work fine once we get the 2.2 update (woot! cant wait till we get flash xD)
as for movies uploaded on megaupload, I guess i'll survive with the .downloadTemp folder trick for now. Thanks.
And if i may ask, what's the quality like on allshare and twonky? and how fast does it respond to fast forwarding/rewinding?
I would like to stream from a regular windows samba share over wireless. I can't even get that working properly. It appears to be a limitation with the player and not the OS.
I want to stream AVI files from my computer to my Nook. GMote doesn't work with AVI. I downloaded VLC Stream and Convert. I fired it up, pointed it at my desktop and it just worked. I was very impressed with it except that it streams all my videos in 4" X 4". I'm sure this would be great on a phone, but I've got 7" to work with here.
Does anyone know of an app that will reliably stream media in full screen? I'm willing to pay for an app that does this. I just need to stream over wifi when I'm at home.
I use CifsManager to mount windows shares, and then RockPlayer Lite to play videos off those shares. It will stretch to full screen, but unless you format the video correctly it's stuck with software decoding.
GMote plays AVI for me, do you have rockplayer?
No Rockplayer. I don't want to have to mount shares. It's an extra step. VLC Stream and Convert works perfectly except it's small screen. I open the app, click on browse, browse to the file I want to play and click play. It buffers and plays with no issues except for the screen size.
There's no extra steps, you browse to the avi you want to play in gmote, click it and rockplayer opens it.
I tested out the GMote Rockplayer combo you all suggested. It worked very well, except I can't seem to fast forward and skip around inside of videos. Is this something I"m doing wrong or is it a limitation of this solution?

I think it may be a limitation. If there's a fix, I don't know it. Rockplayer by itself allows skipping around but youve got it streaming the video through GMote and I doubt that Rockplayer is communicating to GMote.
I got this to work with VLC Stream and Convert. There are options buried in the menu to make the output full screen. I love it. I have to start VLC on my computer ahead of time which is kind of a pain, but I'm at home anyway when I'm doing this. Once I do though, I can stream any of my media and also fast forward, rewind and skip around in it whether in portrait or landscape. Highly recommend this.
I was hoping to provide a solution using orb or Androrb, but I tried with mplayer, rockplayer, and stock player with no luck.
Gmote/rockplayer works for me, but no ff as mentioned. If the v player dev could support the nc it may have potential.
To the above poster, you could use teamviewer to log in to your pc and start the vlc stream.

I suspect that Gmote/Rockplayer doesn't have FF because it's not accessing the stream directly. Gmote is accessing the stream and forwarding it to Rockplayer. I'm in my house when I'm using my NC and I have a VLC shortcut on my toolbar so it doesn't take but a second to start it. I could probably configure VLC to start the web interface part automatically when Windows starts, but I'm too lazy to look into that right now.

In the Icon properties, add this to the target line:
--extraintf http --intf wx
And then move the icon into your startup folder !
Does this require you to be on the same network as Said PC for it to work, ie, can I stream Video from home PC when I am in another area, like the mall, or your moms house?

VLC convert and stream allows this, yes.
vlc stream and convert works fine, you just have to mess with the settings, make sure video playback width is set to 1040 or screen width
When I try to use S&C on my Nook (CM7), it tells me "buffering" for about a minute, then tells me it can't play, too many errors. Installed it on my Inspire HD and it works great. Any ideas, anyone?

Do you have it set to h.264 in the streaming settings? I'm not sure how well the other settings work (if at all).

Yup. Went through the entire setup, all of the settings mirror the ones on my Inspire. Frustrating.

I tried the same thing, works great in rooted Eclair but not in any of the CM7 versions. I think it is because there is no DSP working in CM7, but I could be wrong.
I've been looking for the best way to transcode and stream video from my file server to my Nook Color. (using handbrake to encode video for local playback works great... but until they sell 5 TB sdhc cards that's not going to cut it )
VLC Stream and Convert works (for every kind of file I've thrown at it... which is no surprise, VLC can handle anything pretty much).. but I haven't been satisfied with the quality. (and I've played with the h265 settings quite a bit). Does anyone have recommended settings for this app?
Also, I have Tversity... but I can't get it to work for all my videos yet.... Has anyone successfully configured Tversity to work with their Nook Color?
Are there any other solutions for this that anyone might recommend?

Ive gotten PS3 media server to work with the nook. Its pretty similar to Tvsertity. Install UPnPlay on your Nook and try to access your Tvsertity server. It'll forward the stream to your player of choice (Rock player, etc.)
Only issue I've noticed is with files > 1gb.
has anyone tried twonky? i use it on my epic to stream from my server to phone... it will browse shared files on network and playthem.. or vise versa it can stream from phone to network... next time i have a nook here i can try it myself, but it is a free app so might be worth a shot to see if it will install and run on nook.

Subsonic is quite good. It allows you to stream music and videos, however it requires flash to stream videos so I'm not sure how well it works on CM7. It is also not free.
VLC Convert and Stream is the only program I've found that will stream all of the file types I have on my computer. Everything else you'll have to transcode non compatible files first, which may not actually be that bad if you have plenty of storage space and/or you only have a few files that need to be transcoded.
I have my convert and stream playback on phone settings set to 480 width with highest bitrate selected (I don't have pro version, I think you can get up to 640 width with that) and playback settings set to fit to screen so that the videos expand out. I get a few artifacts here and there but the quality is pretty good considering it's over wireless. Biggest problem I had was getting the sound sync'd up, that required some playing around with the delay settings as it was pretty far off at first. Do you have the pro version? That allows higher resolution and possibly higher bitrate (but I'm unsure on the bitrate). When I watched 720p source videos, it looked pretty good.

I love this app. It works well over home WIFI, but for the life of me I cant get it to connect outside of my home network.
What port forwading settings would I add to get this to work? Wouldnt the rest be the same since at home I use internal IP, outside of home I use external IP? Then forward external IP to the internal one previously set up? Kind of new at this, I've set up live streams before, but cant remember and troubleshoot this properly.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Edit 2: I have followed the directions for VPN and 3G methods but for some reason it wont connect.
Edit 3: Got it working, was missing a single digit in one of my forwards.
I recently tried Plex. That is an exciting app. I love the interface.
The only issue is that even though the streaming works, when I used it over my wifi the playback was laggy (even with overclock). I tried changing the settings and lowering the quality, but it still lagged.

I noticed this with Plex as well. I already use it on my Galaxy S and it plays beautifully, but the NC seems to lag no matter what.
HOWEVER, the same video played over subsonic at maximum quality (Transcoded as .flv and embedded in the browser as a flash video) plays surprisingly well.
Any more knowledgeable members know why that is? I can't seem to figure out why.
I watch 720p mkvs transcoded over 3g running cm7 on my nc with no problems using subsonic. Best option I have found. Server is on a ubuntu 10 machine.

I've been able to use Skifta with RockPlayer or Vplayer to stream from my Windows 7 box (since DLNA is built in). You need a separate video player app in CM7 currently since most codecs have been removed until they get DSP working.

For dlna streaming on my phone i use imediashare and it works perfectly so maybe give it a try on the nook color.
I've tried to stream my simple DIVX AVI files over my wifi for days now. The files are located on a NAS with DLNA capabilities. I've tried different apps, but the same result with every app - does not work. The lag is defined as MAJOR. 0.5 sec of sound, silence for 5 sec, 0.5 sec sound, silence for 5 sec and so on.
The funny thing is, if I pick up my Samsung Galaxy S II - it works FLAWLESSLY! The stream picks up within 1-2 secons and plays just fine without any hickups at all.
How come it works like a charm with my S II, but not with my tab? FYI I've tried with the stock rom, now I'm using the Broodcomb ROM, and the results are the same on both roms. This can't be because the Tab 10.1 doesn't have an official support for DLNA, can it?
Any help would be appreciated since one of the reasons for buying this was to stream Big Bang Theory from my NAS into my bedroom so I can fall asleep to it! lol
What are you using as a player? I suggest Rockplayer which I have used to play DLNA streamed media just fine from my Galaxy S2 phone using Skifta beta (free) as the server. The lag problem may be issues with hardware decoding. If you are using moboplayer, there is a setting in the application to default to software decoding.

Tegra 2 is nice to have on a phone but not on a tablet. Its very old (almost 2 years) for tablet use and does not support many features to make a great tablet experience.
Gah! Bad Samsung! So it would be better if they used their own Exonys CPU instead? Well, let's just wait for the next one then, I'm sure they fix it. Samsung has done a lot of kick ass hardware the last years

I have exactly the same problem. I have a Galaxy S II phone and this is sooo much better at streaming from my NAS.
I just assumed that the Galaxy tab 10.1 should be able to do this easily as well, I mean a tablet is perfect for this!
I have tried Moboplayer, UPnPlay, BubbleUPnP, Vplayer and none of them seemed to be able to manage it.
I will check Rockplayer using Skifta to browse the NAS and report back...
I can confirm that using Skifta as a DLNA app to browse my Buffalo NAS and Rockplayer to stream the video files works brillantly. This seems to be the only combo that is reliable.
Also just set up AndFTP to download files direct to Tab instead of Filezilla server on laptop which is slower transfer rate.

I have had the same problems. I tried MX player and it works. Its also free. Plays most videos and has a choice of encoders. I do hope Samsung sort this out.
Some upnp clients have the ability to 'download' the file from the dlna server (long press on the file), but when I tried this with UPNP Player, the download always fails. Skifta host does not have a download option and I could not find any other suitable candidate to try. Maybe the skifta dlna server does not support file transfers.

I've had success with Skifta as well and UPNP to browse w/ mobo or V player as the player.
I am trying to access media files (mp3 or video files) from shared network drive and play directly in Galaxy Tab 10.1. I am using ES File Explorer and i am able to access my network locations. But it is very SLOW. If any one knows any app with which i can directly access network files on my tab and play them directly in the same wifi network, please advice.

MP3s are no problem as well but I prefer DLNA/UPnP via Allshare to play music since it shows album arts.

CifsManager lets me mount remote CIFS/SMB shares on my device (/sdcard/smb in my case) and then I can play them as if they are stored locally with Mobo and RockPlayer.
Did anyone ever find a solution to this? The issue it bizarre, I have Samsung Glide on the same network that plays 720 files from the network just fine, but the GalaxyTab gets 5kb/sec. Same issue on other wireless routers.
I usually play video over LAN with BS Player, it has a "LAN mode" integrated into the app.
But as long as the files are under 2GB (at least that seemed to be the case, since if I wanted to play a 3GB file it didn't work (very slow and stuttering) but if I split it into two smaller pieces it worked fine) going to their location in File Manager HD and playing them like local storage seems to work too (tried BS player and Dice player, both worked fine).
As mentioned above BS Player's LAN mode is doing the trick for me.
I think its worth to mention VLC Direct Pro, if you have an active computer on the network (wont work directly from something like an NAS) since it will provide support for pretty much any. possible. file. ; 1080p high profile mkv's, name it;
