[Q] does flash a new ROM will wipe /system (format /system) ? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I always think that flashing a new ROM will put the new ROM image in /system and wipe everything there.
but seems that flashing a new ROM, and format /system then flashing a new ROM has different result.

Flashing a new rom (unofficially - e.g Custom Roms via ClockworkMod), will NOT wipe data automatically. BUT it is highly recommended to wipe data before flashing a new rom. Some roms won't require that like coming from a CyanogenMod nightly to another. On the other hand, some roms will not work whatsoever unless the data is wiped before flashing.

I always backup currant rom, and wipe all data. Fix it right the first time! lol

I just do a factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik, then flash the rom straight. Would you be kind enough to tell me what difference is there between flashing rom straight and format system before flashing rom?

[Q] Wipe data and cache when flashing radios or kernels?

Quick question. Is it necessary to wipe cache/system data/dalvik before flashing a new radio or kernel? Or do you only wipe that stuff when you flash a new ROM?
Thanks!
Before a new radio no it isnt necessary. Before a kernel update I always wipe dalvik and battery. Unsure if its really needed but it never hurts just in case.
It isn't so necessary with radios. I always do before a kernel or ROM. backupbackupbackup.
Wipe everything (data/cache/dalvik) for new ROMs, unless you're upgrading from older build of a newer ROM. In that case, I'd read the instructions to see if there is anything special noted. If not, you'll be fine, in most cases, doing a straight flash.
For new kernels, always wipe dalvik cache. I suggest wiping battery stats too.
For radios, don't worry about wiping anything.

[Q] fullwipe need of tutorial

i'm looking for well explained tutorial on doing a fullwipe before flashing new rom.
thanks...
What phone and firmware do you have and what rom do you want to flash to it ?
before you flash it, make sure you do a backup of course in case anything goes wrong.
i believe you just need to wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache
Depending on your phone, there are many ways to do a full wipe. You can do it manually in recovery, you could flash Calkulin's format all, or you could flash Virus Rom's superwipe (which is basically calkulin's format all flashed 3 times)
Thanks, I'm using 1.3 leedroid
Flashed withuot a fullwipe
sent from my blazing fast leedroid sensational

[Q] Will a full wipe in recovery wipe the rom, too?

I'm selling my phone and wonder if a full wipe will take out the rom too. Any takers on this noob question?
No, a full wipe will erase only the apps installed (and its data too), but the cROM will persist.
Thanks for the help, Rober
select mounts and storages and wipe(format) system.
that depends on the rom really. Doing a factory reset on some custom rooms will clause a boot loop as it removes some files need for the rom. Best bet would be to do a full wipe and reinstall the rom before you reboot.

[Q] Downgrade from CM11 to Jelly bean 4.1.2

Hi guys im an xperia s LT26i user and i have an unlocked bootloader. Im currently running cm11 rom by raymanfx. The last time i tried to flash 4.1.2 rom i did NOT wipe system and i ended up getting a bootloop and soft brick. So if i am running cm11 and if i want to downgrade to 4.1.2 do i need to wipe system, data, cache and dalvik cache? cache and dalvik is a must but if i wipe system and data will it work?
You should make a full wipe probably everytime you switch your ROM. So:
- factory reset
- wipe dalvik cache
- format system
So your entire system is clear and if this don't work flash latest Stock ROM first and then the ROM you'ld like to run on your phone

Kernel Cleaner

Recently i have flashed several kernals. I always did all wipes with cwm. Are there reasons to use a tool to clear old kernals? What will happen if i format boot partition with cwm? Will this operation clean old kernel's traces?
I try to be more clear
When i do all wipes (factory reset, cache, dalvik) do they clean also karnel?? And, what is boot format option in cwm? is it safe to do?
Thank you for attention.
