There seems to be a constant flow of questions about booting into recovery, so I thought I would take a video of what works for me.
In stock form this will get you to the recovery that allows you to wipe your user data. If you have an alternative recovery installed, ClockWorkMod as an example, this will get you booted into it.
UPDATED - we don't need to hold the VOL+ button.
1. Power Off the Device
2. Hold N and Power
3. After the screen has been on for about 5 seconds, release the buttons.
I hope this helps!
Nice job, BertoJG!
Come on, show us how to completely hose your OS, and boot into recovery, please! Thanks for your work on CWM!

Thanks! People seem to find enough creative ways of hosing their OS, no need for me to demonstrate.. That is why I worked on CWM as I though it was important and could "save" people from themselves, me included..

I'm going to try and redo my script because there is no reason why it shouldn't work but I had a hard time getting it to work I'm going to test this method.
Please note the OP has been updated to reflect the fact we don't need to hold the VOL+ key as part of this process.
Help Please: how to undo ClockWorkMod Recovery to use original stock Recovery?

Please pardon the cross post but anxious to find a reply.
I have installed the ClockWorkMod (& obviously its recovery menu).
The big question...
How to restore back to the original B&N Factory "recovery" program (i.e., undo installation of CW recovery system)?
I do not have a backup pre-CW; is there an image or RUU file somewhere, or is there a hidden backup copy of the original recovery to restore?
just curious this is for if you cant boot your nook currect due to a bad flash ?
others wis you could acces the recovery in the rom manager menu ?
I can boot into the CW recovery menu and select full recovery, but the result is not a virgin Nook... it is still rooted, has such app installed, etc. And most importantly, still has CW recovery mode installed and active as the recovery menu (ie whenever you do a hard reset boot) .
This is not ideal for a warranty inquiry situation when needed.
Thanks!

CWM doesn't let you do a full stock restore. The restore it gives you also needs to supplemented with about 10 steps or so in the terminal to get the stock recovery back.
Anyone whose rooting should be comfortable at the terminal, but we've known that CWM doesnt give a full backup for many days now and I guess its not a priority to get it fully operable, unless I'm mistaken...this is my first time back on the board in a while.

I am comfortable with terminal of adb, but not sure I have URL to get virgin boot image...
This it?
... dang! No paste in this App... have to go to my PC to add URL..
It is post in a "brick" thread.

I just don't know the unambiguous terminology ... I hope "virgin recovery" makes sense, though nobody else has called it that.

OK... as I hoped, the procedure listed in the thread "[Q] HELP! Maybe brick?" completely worked for me. Threads on this are scattered about, especially because some folks are playing with the boot files due to Froyo attempts, etc..
I can at least point anyone reading this to my summary success post:

Maybe some of you should keep an eye open on the forum for new threads. A flashable zip to restore to stock has been available since yesterday.

I must be missing some special thing - I can't boot into recovery. ROM Manager is/was able to get there, but booting with the "N" and the power key never puts me into recovery. Ideas?

You need to hold them both until you see CWR. Don't let go.. Make sure Rom manager has successfully flashed CWR (at the top of the screen in Rom manager).
I think it's a bit hard to determine how long you need to hold Power + n. In my experience very frequently my NC just shuts down when I hold too long. I have modified u-boot to use a different key combo (hold both Vol+ and Vol-) to boot into recovery. It's much easier now. If there is any interest, I can post my u-boot.bin.
Now I think of it, I should be able to modify u-boot to boot into either CWR or stock recovery base on different key combos. Would there be any interest?

I manually updated my Gtab to 3588 ( I have clockwork and 3899 and it would not let me update with clockwork) .
I now have 3588 installed BUT when I hold the Volume+ and Power it does not go into stock recovery. It shows the green box with the arrow for 2 seconds like itsa insalling something and then just boots up. Am I missing the recovery option now and how will this affect me going forard. Will I not be able to have updates or do a factory reset ????
Can someone please advise.
confused to what you are trying to accomplish here. Are you trying to install CWM? Never heard of 3899 update? If you can, give a little more of a description what you have done so far.

That is stock recovery for 3588. There is no menu.
K J RAD . Thank you. I could swear I had a menu when i did that before I installed Clockwork. there were options to install and wipe the system I think. but Maybe I am not remembering it correctly . Again thank you
Sorry that was a typo I meant 3399 . I thought when I previously held down Volume and Power I got a menu in Standard recovery. Post belows states that there is no menu so I guess I was incorrect and thanks for the response. Much appreciated.

Hi Everyone,
I just posted this over in development but I thought maybe Q & A would be better.
Revolutionary and Soff but at the end it asked if I wanted to flash CWM (I didn't see that in the instrctions), I did and it said success. Now I renamed the twrp file to PG86IMG.zip already and it is on the root of my sd card. Is this step even necessary if it already flashed CWM successfully (supposedly)? At this point I am at the hboot screen and I stopped so as not to screw anything up. I apologize guys I am almost finished I promise to stay out of the way after I complete the last couple of steps.
I apologize for bothering you I was just scared to move at this point.

Ok so I just go straight into the recovery select toggle usb and then rename the PG86IMG.zip to PG86IMGShooter.zip, then
Flash root zip:
Download the superuser file from here or my mirror here. Put it on your phones SD card. Press power to unmount, select Apply update from zip and press power. Select Choose zip from SD card and press power. Find the superuser zip and press the power button. After the zip is applied you will be returned to the previous menu. Select Reboot System and wait for your phone to boot back up.
Is that correct?
Thank you so much aimbdd!
OK I think I can get it if I can get into recovery from the FASTBOOT USB screen. Do I want to select FASTBOOT USB or BOOTLOADER, REBOOT, REBOOT BOOTLOADER or POWER DOWN?
Thanks again everyone

That is correct. As long as your recovery is working. When I let the revolutionary program flash clockwork, it said it was successful but did not work. I would just hang at the htc screen when trying to boot to recovery. So I downloaded the PG86IMG.zip of TWRP recovery, put it on my sd card, and flashed that.
But yes, once you have the recovery all set, the method you just posted by aimbdd is correct and should work just fine.
Thank you k2buckley

OK So I guess that is a known issue with the CWM part of Revolutionary. Is there a way to check I guess power down and then hold volume button down see what comes up? I'm going to flash the twrp file if I get stuck will you be on for a few more minutes?
I wish I could thank you but there isn't a button? I don't know why?

Yes, I'll be on for a bit. I'm always checking in here, I must be sick or something. Anyways, yea I think quite a few people experienced clockwork not flashing correctly. Yes, you can check to see if you have recovery. Pull your battery, then put it back in. Hold your power button and volume down button simultaneously until your hboot screen pops up, then let go. Then select recovery, and see if you boot into clockwork. If it hangs at htc screen, that means that clockwork failed to flash. In that case, pull the battery, and boot up if you can. Put the PG86IMG.zip of TWRP recovery on the main directory of your sd card (not in any folders). Be sure it's named correctly. For your ease, I'll upload my copy which is already named properly. Just put it on your sd card, then boot to the bootloader. It'll ask you to update. Then press volume up to say yes. Then reboot. THen go back to your bootloader and select recovery. You should now successfully boot into TWRP. At that point, flash the su zip file you've downloaded so you'll have super user, busy box, and su. Then you'll be fully rooted and good to go.
EDIT: and no worries about the thanks. If you're not seeing the thanks button, and you're actually on the XDA website, and not the app....then most likely you need to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the screen, and look to the left side. You'll see a spot that says "XDA Classic". Change that to "XDA 2010", and you should then have the thank you button appear.

Do you know if you were connected to the internet when it asked if you wanted to flash CWM? or do you think it was a fix that was added in recently to Revolutionary?

Yes, since you have clockwork, just flash the su file. For sure. If you look at my last post, I edited it, and think I know why your thanks button doesn't show up. Check it out. And no worries about the thanks, seriously. Save em for the developers! I think you needed to be connected to the internet when it flashed clockwork so it downloaded. not sure though.

haha. I don't remember exactly how to create a backup on clockwork. Personally, I made my backup after I flashed the su file, that way the backup I created was fully rooted with su, super user, and busybox installed already. So I'd flash the su file, then create your backup. I only used clockwork for like the first week I had my original Evo 4G, then switched to Amon. So I think in order to create the backup, you choose 'create backup', or 'nandroid backup', or backup, or something like that. I apologize, but I'm really not sure.

You're welcome. Never a problem.
Yes, flash the su file. I would not update busy box or download any different versions or whatever. Just roll with the one that is included in the su file you're going to flash. I've had problems before from downloading busy box from the market, for whatever reason. Once you flash that file, boot up, and make sure everything is working okay. Be sure you have the super user app in your app drawer, and try some root apps to make sure that they are properly granted SU access. After you confirm everything is okay, boot back into clockwork and create your backup. You'll then be good to go.
Thank you again

Did you use Revolutionary on the device? Did it acknowledge that it was successful in flashing custom recovery to your device?
The proper way to reach CWM is to turn the device completely off, then hold down the volume down button and press the power button. From that screen you should select "Recovery" by using volume up/down buttons to move and power button to select. Don't use ROM Manager to install or get to Clockworkmod.
i do not have a fast boot option, thanks for replying though.
If you dont see fastboot.... Then you are not rooted. Try the process again.
You should be able to power off the phone, then hold the down volume button while powering on the phone.
Then you should see fastboot and recovery. If you don't see either, then the root process was unsuccessful.

Dear all,
Here is the situation. I decided to root my evo 3d gsm (hboot 1.5++) today, and all went well until I flashed a rom (virtuous). Now whenever I boot on the phone, it shows me this "V" logo and loads for more than 10minutes or so. I can go into my bootloader, but when I attempt to do anything from my clockworkmod recovery, when I press the power button to select different options, I get blank menus and I can attempt nothing. I am an unexperienced user, and can anyone out there who is experience render some assistance? I am at my wits end...
Thanks
Well I'm not too familier with the gsm version... the "V", is that part of the boot animation? and does it just loop over and over? maybe try reflashing clockworkmod and re wipe and install?

The "V" is the part of the boot animation. And the "V" just glows again and again, yeah so i guess it loops. Why I am so worried is because I saw a window of my HTC sense booting to life earlier on, but I saw the words "Unfortunately... has... crashed..." but it was very brief, and after which the animation began again. Is it because I waited for too short a period of time? (around 15 minutes or so) or because it really boot looped? And how do I reflash clockwordmod when I can't access my phone and sd card? Will appreciate your kind help...
I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes for something too boot, and it should really never take longer than that. Can you tell me the steps you took to flash the rom(not to root it). and could you give some more info about your phone? are you s-on or s-off? And what do you mean by blank menus in clockwork mod? Do you know how to boot into your hboot menu? from there you can boot to fastboot and install the recovery from your pc. connect your phone to the pc while in fastboot mode and get your recovery.img file and type the following command from the command line:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery /path/to/<recovery>.img

Ok, here is the infomation. I live in Singapore, which is a part of Southeast Asia, my phone is the GSM version with HBoot 1.530007(i cant remember the decimal placing).
I firstly used HTCDEV to unlock my bootloader, which went well, then I went to evohacks to get the conventional rooting method, which went well too. And it all came when I was careless, and I accidentally forgot to wipe the data and cache of my evo before i flashed the rom. And now it gets stuck in the "V" logo loading phase. If the hboot menu is the menu where I have to press the powerbutton and the volume down button then yes. I can also get into my recovery, but the problem is that it shows a blank menu in (clockwordmod specifically), thus rendering whatever me helpless. i have downloaded the PG86IMG.zip and Im waiting for it to finish. So how do I go about solving this matter? This phone is my only asset and I really want to save it...
Blank menu as in for example when I click "Reboot", or "Factory Reset" or perhaps "Restore" in the CWD Recovery, it just shows me a blank menu with the CWD logo in the background, with no options or drop down words or whatsoever. And the sad thing is that I did not make any recoveries at all.... So I plucked my sd card out, and now im waiting to finish downloading the PG86IMG.zip to put on my sd and into my phone, and flash it to revert it back to stock and stuff..... I hope this works
Ok, well as long as you can get to either hboot or recovery you'll be ok. I would recommend flashing 4ext recovery, as it has never failed me and seems to help others. here is the link to it. Download that and pull the recovery.img out and flash that from your pc with the command I gave above. It sounds like you are either pushing the wrong button in the recovery or it might just be messing up for some reason. Is it the touchscreen version of clockworkmod?

The recovery is the free version, so it shouldn't be the touch one. May I ask, what do you mean by recovery.img? I emptied my SD card so that I can put the PG86IMG.zip into it later. Any more specific steps you can give? Sorry but Im really a newb in the android world

The recovery.img is the image that the phone flashes to install the recovery. If you look in the zip I posted in the link you'll see that file in there. the one I posted is the 4ext touch recovery. you can manually flash that file to your phone in case you can't get it to boot(like your case). I would suggest trying the 4ext recovery I linked, or maybe try to boot to recovery again and see if its touch based. Were the menus working when you flashed the virtuous rom, and then it stopped working?
OH stupid me. Whoops. Actually I CAN navigate. Ive been pressing the wrong button all this while. I pressed the power instead of the camera, which is the select button. Whoops. seems like CMD was working after all. sorry...
ok but still, can I just attempt to install the RUU file I downloaded in the CWD menu? Will it work? Will my phone be reverted back to its original unrooted state? I saw someone say it could...
There is something bugging me though. My SD card is now completely empty. Will it have any negative effects on what i do?
I thought something like that was happening, glad you got it sorted. Try to wipe everything and reinstall your virtious rom again first. yes the PG86IMG.zip will return you back to complete stock, recovery and all. So if you do that you might have to re-root all over again.

I would recommend trying it before you go back to stock just to re-do it all, but its up to you. yeah if you need more help just come here or pm me. glad you got it working again!
Thank You!
Oh ok! I thought by clearing the data using recovery on the phone and sd will render the root useless. Will try redoing it again. Will update you on the further details
Many thanks!

If you only wipe /data/ you will still have root. sdcard doesn't matter.

So theoretically flashing the ROM shouldn't take more than... around 15 minutes?
correct
Its now 10 minutes and so far my phone had made 2 major vibrations. So if this doesn't work, can i just wipe all the data again, put the PG86IMG.zip in my phone, go to recovery to install it, and then I just press reboot right?

Sometimes sense roms can take a bit, but if its vibrating than it should be working. if not just put the PG86IMG.zip on the root of your sdcard and boot into hboot and let it do its thing. no need to wipe data for that.
