Hi guys,
I just bought my sgs2 and here is the current configs:
Model: GT-I9100
Android: 2.3.3
Baseband: I910XXKF1
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100JPKG2-CL342890 [email protected] #2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.JPKG2
1. If I want to load custom rom like Litening or Criskelo, do I have to change the firmware/kernel first? each custom rom is based on different kernel, etc.
2. Any Kernel/firmware is compatible to my sgs2?
3. loading custom rom would require root, cwm?
That's all my queries for now.
I hope to hear from anybody soon.
Thank you.

read the above link and that will answer what you need to know.. also if you are going to flash a rom make sure you read the rom that you will choose thread..What i mean if you are going to flash say VillainRom read through the opening page and all your answers and guide will be there. Installation of rom and how to flash it and what kernel to use etc....When flashing a rom always stay with the Kernel that the dev provides with. Only saying that because what might work for others might not work for you.
But read the guide of the link i gave you and if you need more answers id be happy to help you out...Also on the Q&A forum hit the search button and try searching what you want, and see if anyone else has asked what you are looking for

I have 2.1.71 as a baseband, and noticed there are no threads about this (as far as I can tell, the highest i saw was .67.
Can I still downgrade? If so, please provide a link. I just want a nice, easy custom ROM to use.
Also, can someone please help with Custom ROM installation? Any ROM will do, just give a step by step walkthrough on how to do it, or provide a link to a walkthrough. Doesn't matter which custom ROM, just any.
ANOTHER question: I flashed my firmware, to x10i. My phone is originally an x10a. Is that bad? I've been using it for awhile and there've been no problems.
And which one is more supportive of custom ROMS?
if u want a custom ROM based on android 2.3 then all uses baseband 2.1.71 so no need to downgrade imo !! any ROM can be choosen like depends on ur usage coz every ROM out there has some different features !! installing a ROM is a easy task and mostly the ROM thread consists of the instructions on how to install ROM
and check these links both will be of great help

Yes you would root using the CF-root kernel first, then you can start to use custom roms.
You could just install proper CF-Root kernel for your firmware. You have wider options to select the proper firmware yourself.
NeatROM is exactly that. Official Firmware + CF-Root.

aprat from KIES update there are 2 ways,
1) official ICS flash from ODIN, 2) Custom Roms flash from CWM
for official you dont need Rooting,
for flashing Custom Roms from CWM you need Rooting & CWM.
Official Roms :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487
custom Roms you can find here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1204
rooting and Odin flash guides are there in my signature links

OP Kies is your official update path download it from Samsung .
Or the XDA path as posted above but you will need to read and understand .

thank you Zacq8 and Jjegan..
thanks for quick response, suggest me which is the best and less battery consuming ROM for sg2? Official or custom?
Neither. No such thing as best. Less battery depends on how you have the phone setup & how you use it (everyone is different). Try some roms out for yourself to find out which works best for you.

What suggested by Mistahbungle +
only what we can answer as per the rule is, By flashing official ROM you will not get any suppot from Samsung, by flasing a custom rom you may get support from it's Developer through his thread in this forum.
in development section, there are not only a single post of ROM of each custom Rom thread but there are prolonged discussions on each one, go through them before selecting one...
Calaxy S2 i9100 (international)
stock Android version Gingerbread 2.3.5 not rooted
Baseband version: I9100XXKI4
Kernal version: 2.6.35.7-I9100JPKJ2-CL655700 [email protected] #2
Build number Gingerbread.JPKJ2
no carrier. GSM sim card.
I want to perform the following to my i9100 phone:
1) How to move from the official Gingerbread 2.3.5 version to cyanogenMod 9 ROM. Including, can I install Cyanogen 9 on top of 2.3.5 kernal.
2) Best safe way to backup original stock Gingerbread ROM in case something doesn't go according to plan.
3) How and at what point during upgrade to CM 9 to root.
4) Which is the proper, stable kernal for this CM 9 (dorimanx has been recommended). At what point, during the upgrade process, is the kernal changed. This is a main concern I have.
I have never done any of this before. I didn't want to upgrade to Android 4.0.04 because of potential Super Brick or other complications. Jelly Bean is not an option for other reasons.
CyanogenMod 9 would seem to meet all my current needs for this phone, and is open source)
I have not seen a detailed "How to" guide to upgrade from stock Gingerbread 2.3.5 to CycnogenMod 9, rooting, and kernal install. Just parts of it scattered, a year old. Can someone guide me through this.
I just need a flexible stable everyday ICS level phone. I'm open to suggestions. Please remember, I have not done any of this before. Thank you.
Spoon feeding is not aloud here on xda. Please read them scattered threads for the info you need them put it all together and then read abit more. Learning is the key to xda not just asking then getting what you want. First thing you need to look at is rooting. Good guide on here telling you about root

Hey Guys!
I have a questions related to kernels. I want to install this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712065
I saw that I need this custom kernel:
https://github.com/SlimRoms/kernel_sony_msm8974
I don't know how to build it. I did read that i need Linux ?! I'm not sure about this.
Anyways I still don't know how to realize this. I know that I need a .sin or .img file.
I really need help with that
After that, if I manage to flash my phone with that kernel, does it start into recovery or
is any recovery pre-installed on that kernel ?! If no, how do I install/access cwm ?
I can't find any helpful tutorials for flashing custom kernels on my phone.
I think I have this kernel accidently installed now with flashtool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2548092
(how can i check what kernel i have and is there any stock 4.4.2 kernel maybe with cwm ?!)
The main question here is, how do I install a kernel for custom roms like cm or paranoid or togari roms, etc. ?
I am very thankful for every helpful answer!
greets
