I have an LG Optimus x2. The android version is 2.2.2. How do I know what I have, froyo, gingerbread, honeycomb, dutch oven, etc...?
I have Cerberus. It says I have to upgrade to Gingerbread to use the face camera, witch I want and need as a security measure.
What does the numbers mean? Ex. 2.2.2, 2.3.4, etc...
What do the baked goods names mean?
I want to upgrade to "Gingerbread" but will my current apps work in the new upgrade? The ones I am concerned about are:
Silent camera (I got it here on this site.)
Skype video (well it doesn't work on what I have now, its more of an inquiry.)
Hanping CE
Baidu input (I need these last two for school)
Then, where does CM7 come into this whole mess?
Now how do I go about getting this Gingerbread?
Sorry for the many questions as I just learned to root my phone a week ago.

Like you said, your phone has android 2.2.2.
That is Froyo
2.2 = Froyo
2.3 = Gingerbread
3.0 = Honeycomb
The numbers represent that version of android.
The names are just code names used by Google for each version of Android
CM7 is a custom ROM
Here's a link to it for your phone

As for getting Gingerbread. I'd suggest you have a look in the section for your particular phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=999
Your apps should also work fine. 99% of all apps that work on froyo will work on Gingerbread.

Hi
Since moving to N1 my Hero was redundant but then it went to repair and got a brand new Hero. So What is the best ROM to use now? Where did feeyo go
Can someone recommend a stable sense rom please
Thanks
Feeyo got banned for not following the GPL agreement (and making dupe accounts repeatedly), he now resides on his own website where I believe he has now released his source code as per the agreement. Google it.
Best rom is still to try them all. The best supported sense rom is probably VillainROM 12 (not including Cronos stuff which I don't follow currently as its not on XDA). But you have to try Froyo IMHO! Many releases out there, just give them a go.
Try froyo, as it has stable and usable jit
care to link to the rom please
There are many froyo rom's check the dev section, Froyd Villain, elelinux, Fusion ROM, Cronos Froyo, etc etc...
my hero is on 1.5, what's the quickest way to root?

http://www.villainrom.co.uk/vBwiki/index.php?title=Installing_Custom_ROMs is probably the easiest method tbh.
On Hero 1.5, I got the universal root and it rooted but when i open the terminal app the keyboard dont show, i tried holding menu aswell. I tried other terminal apps but no luck
Try elinux 1.9~~ Froyo rom
I take it CM 6 is the best right now?
the latest mcr went ugly on me - could hear voice on phone calls, slow
If you want to use HTC Sense install Android 2.1 (2.2 is still in beta) try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=702398 I'm using it and it's pretty fast and looks great. But if you want to use stable Android 2.2 without Sense try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=767886
Hi All,
I'm new to modding my phone and recently flashed it with Cyanogenmod Froyo 2.2.
I want to flash it with Gingerbread but have seen that there are memory leak problems with Cyanogens.. In fact today they ave decided to pull support for the device.
What are my options for getting Gingerbread onto my Hero GSM??
I have seen Elelinux's mod highly spoke of, but it is based on Cyanogen mod (i think). Does it too have the same memory leaks??
Thanks in advance!
Cyanmod have Officially Ceased supporting the HTC HERO as they don't have a DEV supporting the Developement for the HERO
THE LAST Cyanmod for HERO is I Guess version 7.02 and thats it
Elelinux's Gingerbread is Based on the CM7 but He does his own tweaks as well you can always check the thread for what problems people are reporting for the ROM
There is another GIngerbread ROM by 'Cronos' which you could try, but you will have to google for it as I don't think I might get away with posting links here
google for 'cronos project'
I have used elelinux's Roms a lot so like his work but is personal choice and thats what XDA offers it members 'CHOICE'
Don't make assumptions about ROMS .
Try them yourself and stick to the one you like the best
in his latest version (2.0), elelinux included a special patch that has to be flashed separately after flashing the ROM, and on my Hero it reduced the amount of black screens and invisible menus by a great deal. They still show up every now and then, but only when doing memory-intensive stuff. Go check out the thread
Haven't tried Cronos yet, but they also get some good credit I believe.
Just got mik's latest and greatest for my Optimus One, and i have been loving it. Just wondering if there is a way to get the 2.2 Dialler app working on 2.3. I tried copying the 2.2 Dialler.apk from Void rom to the phone and installing it, but it wouldn't. Is there a way, cuz i love the predictions the 2.2 dialler gave me when i dialled a number.
Hi,
I'm currently on GingerBlur v4.5 right now and kind of want to update to 2.3.4 (some little things in GingerBlur just don't seem to work very well -- phone doesn't vibrate when I receive text messages, for example).
I'm aware that I need to go back to stock and then do the OTA update, but would doing so stop me from being able to root/theme? I'm excited for CM7 to be released, but kinks are still being worked out and I don't want to install anything that isn't at least in the "beta" stage, which I assume to be relatively stable.
Would reflashing (?) GingerBlur fix some of the issues I have or should I update to 2.3.4?
Also, is there any way to 'theme' Motoblur? I know of ADWLauncher and things like that, but I'd like everything else to look as close to vanilla Gingerbread as possible as well.. many thanks
When you say stock do you mean AOSP or Blurred 2.3.4? CM7 is the only thing sporting 2.3.5 that I'm aware of.
The latest stock version from Motorola is 2.3.4.
Sorry guys, meant to say 2.3.4 -- I've edited the post/title accordingly.
Ok...I am really REALLY new to all of this. IF you put a custom Honeycomb ROM (CM7 is Honeycomb right?) onto a tablet, will it then run apps that are designed for Honeycomb tablets?

Cm7 is 2.3.7 gingerbread and apps working anyway.
Most.

The ROM is the same android OS but customized regardless of the android version (honeycomb, gingerbread, etc).
Different ROMs could have the same Android version. Major ROMs like CM are updated by their Developers when a new android OS is available.
Apps work mostly on any ROM, unless a certain app doesn't work on a certain Android OS version.
I hope I could answer your question.

Sort of....I guess I should break it down a little. There is a Words With Friends App that is made specifically for Honeycomb and because of that I can't even put it on my tablet which runs Froyo (parsing error). If I install a custom ROM or ported ROM like CM9, will it allow me to be able to install it?
CM9 is Ice Cream Sandwich I believe... It might run your app.
Go to the app page on the market and see if anyone is complaining about it not working with ICS... If not, you're good to go.
CM8 was supposed to be Honeycomb, but didn't happen because Google didn't release the source code for Honeycomb. If you find a Honeycomb ROM specific for your tablet, then that answers your question. Otherwise you might have to wait till an ICS ROM is developed for your tablet.
