Hello!
I've made my first boot animation for my phone (atrix 4G)... But I still have a few problems. Maybe someone can help me?
First, when the phone is booting, my animation is displayed but only for a few second (maybe 2 or 3) before a black screen appears until the phone ended to boot (about 15/20 sec.). What I don't understand, is that the animation is normally during about 12 sec... First mistery!
The second one is that no sound is playing during the animation... But I put a .ogg file in system/media folder and entered the command line in the desc.txt file with the right name.
Here is what I have in my desc file:
540 960 25
p 0 0 JM
s JM.ogg
I don't understand where is the problem...
Thanks a lot if someone has an idea.. And sorry for my aproximative english!

For Gingerbread, the sound file has to be in /system/media/notifications

could you post the zip? I don't see anything wrong with it, other than the previously mentioned fix for the sound, maybe I could find the problem with a more hands on approach
I have had problems in the past when using upper case to name folders and audio files with boot animations. Never knew why I would have issues, but I always use lower case for everything now just as a matter of course. Also, as previously mentioned, you need to change the location of your audio file.
It may also be because you have only one animations folder. I have done a lot of boot animations, and always have a part0 and part1 folder and haven't had problems.

How are you zipping the boot animations?
Should be using 7-Zip with format set to zip, and compression level set to store.
First of all, thanks for the sound fix, it just works great in the right folder...

I tried to create two folders... Same issue...
My file is zipping with winrar, using "simple storage" mode. But if there were a problem with the zipping, I think the bootanimation shouldn't work at all. Mine is working... But for a few seconds only!

AFAIK the folders names that contain the main animation and the looping part must be named "part0" for main animation and "part1" for the loop. So not "JM" and "JM0" but "part0" and "part1". But I think your desc.txt goes along with the two folder names that you had, so maybe change it like a regular desc.txt that goes along with the folder names part0 and part1.
Finally I used the original bootanimation folder from ATT and just put my images instead of the ATT's and it just work fine.
I can't understand what's the trouble with my file, but now it's working.

I don't think this is the problem because in the original bootanimation, folders are named "ATT", "ATT Freeze", "Intro"... Not Part1, Part 2...
So, I'll put the tread in solved... even if it isn't really! Thanks for your help!
Here is your bootanimation fixed and working fine. I just downloaded your animation, then changed some stuff around, rezipped with 7-Zip, and uploaded again.
Maybe looking at this will help you for the future.
Cheers!

Has anyone figured out how to change the boot animation?
It seems it's stored in /system/media/bootanimation.zip
I tried replacing the .PNG images inside the archive and that didn't work, although I might have messed up something. I'm just glad to be rid of that dreadful SE color splash until someone else finds a solution.
finished playing with this a little while ago... when you replace the files you must use no compression, ie store. i've attached one with the android robot waving (cropped from nexus) simple, but at least the splash is gone

Thanks for this! Looks so sweet!!
strange... I replaced one frame to see if it changed and saw nothing ( i put a big red X across one image ). I did use no compression ( kept the zip open in winrar and saved )
will try again!

i finally found it for sure...from the zip above extract them all put your images in an then add in a zip file all of them again but you have to rename it as bootanimation.zip and you have to choose at winrar compression method store...its final and you can put anything you want...
Thank you for helping me sort this out.
Here's GLa’DOS "Android Scribble" animation for the x10 mini.
Apparently anim2 lasts a couple of seconds, and anim3 last the longest.
I lost my first x10 mini, so I added a name and telephone number for my animation after posting (and a lock screen for the phone).
if anyone want me to make any anime feel free...

1 root your phone
2 download rootexplorer(<---and install it) & any bootanimation.zip you want
3 open rootexplorer and go to your sdcard hold down your finger and choose copy
4 then go to system/media
5 at the upper of your root explorer its a button that says mount r/w make it says by pushing it mount r/o
6 push the button paste and then when it says ovewrite push yes
7 reboot and you r ready!!!!
if i make it a single file you will not have the option when the first animation is over the second to be anime it will be a still picture if you want that just leave one image in the second folder..because it have 2 phases of animation..!!!!(if you remember first when the colours where mixing and then the still image with sony ericsson logo and letters)
I've been trying to edit the desc.txt file so I can have a little more flexibility but even if I save it without making any changes it stops working.
After a look around the interwebs someone mentioned saving in the UNIX format, so I used Notepad ++ in UNIX and tried editing/saving in that but there's still problems, sometimes it doesn't work at all and sometimes it only shows the first folder.
Also, are there any limitations as to framerate and how many files can go in the part0/part1 folders (revision of enormous101's bootanimation.zip).
Finally, is it ok to add a part2?
do not use compression - use Winrar and select "store"

as i mentioned part 2 is when the bootanimation of sony ericsson stays frozen you can add anything you want and its safe to play with part two.. no limitation except your internal storage!!!!what exactly are you trying to do with desc?may i help you?if you find my preview posts at the first page you will find to download the bootanimation.zip with two parts so unzip it and when you add your images zip it with winrar at store compression mode...

Nice thread!
I was wondering about the desc.txt file. I am using the Rogers 2.1 firmware and I want to remove the Rogers screen that shows up just before desktop loads. The PNG file for the Rogers screen is located in Anim5 and I was wondering if I just removed the entry for anim5 in the desc file, would that do the trick? I've already moved the original bootanimation.zip file onto my computer so it is backed up but I was just wondering if this would work. I am using a X10 but it seems like the file system is the same which is why I'm asking here. Any help would be appreciated!
hope helped

if you dont know how to change desc.txt then dont...unzip the bootanimation.zip change the images inside anim5 folder and then zip it but at compression mode use ''store'' instead of everything else and just put it in your phone...i cant change your desc.txt and make it into two folders because i dont own x10...

Thanks for your response! From what I've been reading, it seems that if I remove the entry for anim5 in the desc.txt, that it won't load that animation. It just seems easier to do this than to replace the image in that folder. Though the problem would then be making changes to a UNIX based txt file using a Windows OS and then the phone not recognizing the desc.txt file based on it being in the wrong format.
Anyway, I suppose I could just copy over the last image in anim4 and replace the one in anim5 with that and that would be the easier solution (as per your suggestion).
Here is the thread I was reading where it describes the desc.txt file and how to modify your boot animation.
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/33932-bootanimation-zip-file-explained.html
was playing around a bit with the build-in dell boot screen. since i want my own i tried figuring out how.
in system/media there is a file called bootanimation.zip
i tried many different pictures and such and all i get is a black screen.
no idea what is the problem. i altered the text file on the phone itself. did this on windows but it seems that additional characters are added.
in the end i found out that 72dpi 24bit 480 800 16 color files should do.
but over and over again i get black screen. in the end i tried a bootanimation.zip from a friends G1 that runs this droid x r2d1 theme. and guess what.. it works ??
attached it down here.
anyone got any idea what can be the problem with this bootscreens ?
as soon as i change the zip file it wont work anymore but if i leave it as it is it works fine, allthough it has different screensize and such.

was using winrar for it. on normal compression. im gonna try what u suggest
edit : that worked used winrar and set it to STORE instead of NORMAL compression.
it seems the bootanimation.zip should be in /Data/Local/ as Android operating system looks here first and then when it doesn't find it there it looks in /System/Media/
it doesnt have any problem with different bootanimation.zip in both dirs, it just loads the one in /Data/Local/ first.
use this template zip i made for your own creations
desc.txt file :
480 800 16
-> size of screen 480x800 and FPS that the stuff should play @
p 1 0 part0
-> p is for part dir. this lets android know which dir to use first to show the pictures. the first number 1 is 0 or 1 repeat on/off. the second is pauze time. part0 is foldername where pics are to be found.
p 0 0 part1
-> p is for part dir. this lets android know which dir to use next to show the pictures. the first number 1 is 0 or 1 repeat on/off. the second is pauze time.part 1 is foldername where the pics are to be found.
If pause = 10, it will show the last frame and then it will sleep 10/fps seconds before continuing with the animation.
you can add as many pictures as you like as long as they follow up in numbers . i.e. yourname_0001.png yourname_0002.png yourname_0005.png yourname_0025.png .. and so on. as long as the files have increased numbers its fine.
awesome, thanks!
now we cant start debranding this thing

splashscreen is in loader in the firmware/bios
i found somewhere where to put the audiofiles..
/system/customize/resources/
I have /system/customization..inside there is an MMs and a Wallpaper folder
no /system/customize/resources.
should I create it, what should the bootsound be named bootsound.mp3? or .ogg?
Thanks
ya know whats weird, is i bought an at&t version from bestbuy and i have yet to see any sort of branding at all aside from the network block...
nothing. no logo on the phone or boot screen or menus etc..
i entered an unlock code already and as best i can tell its the same as the unlocked dell version other than i can taked it back to best buy for 30 days and get a new streak as opposed to sending it back in for a refurb which is what you get straight through dell.
of course after 30 day thats what i have to do as well..send it back in for a refurb...

i dont see the bootsound service in init.rc so i presume there isnt going to be audio until there is a script playing it.
in the desc.txt add these line
s bootsound.ogg
and add a bootsound.ogg in data/local
put the bootanimation.zip also there and delete all other instances of the file.
didn't work for me, added line at end of desc.txt, and bootsound.ogg in /data/local and removed any other my backupanimation.zip from the /local folder..
nothing...
I would just be satisfied to get the first splash screen changed without too much trouble.

it is correct the desc.txt (for xperia X8 its "320 480" without quotes) also the folders are correctly named and the zip file is in /data/local with the right permissions aswell.
using "adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local"
all that i end up with is a quick boot logo then black screen until the keypad for pin code comes up.
Here is the bootanimation file btw: Bootanimation.zip
UPDATE: saw now it said "part1" and "part2" in desc.txt even tho i didnt type that, so i changed that, pushed file and still same same but lil different =/
Btw ive searched all over XDA and i found a post that said it can be placed inside /system/customize/resource/
is that correct is it it way way waaaay off ?
Yeah we have tried alot off stuff but nothing helps. So please someone help us !!
Problem is your desc.txt
You need to use linux to edit it (or any editor that doesn't use CRLF for separating lines)
Don't make separate lines between the data.
Attachment may help.
I used the Text Editor in Root Explorer, but maybe the problem is, that the bootanimation.zip has to be a store-only-zip,compressed ones won´t work

Use notepad++ (or Linux )
Use STORE method when creating zip.
@Baronen, I'm responding to your PM here so i can help others too.. the problem with the animation you sent me by PM is that it's compressed.. When you pack it you need to be sure that the compression is set to "0" or "store", depending on what program you are using..

This happens when the desc.txt has an error or is malformed.. As DX said, you need to use a specific editor, notepad won't do it.. You can use notepad++ but you have to configure it so it treats text like unix.
PIC: http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/7074/notepadj.png
Some other tips:
Always convert your images to 256 colors
Don't use more than 12/15 FPS
Try not to use the native device resolution (320x480), even with low fps the animation will get slow.. take the ones on froyobread for ex, they are slow because the images are at 320x480 (yeah i will fix them when i have a bit of time)
EDIT: goonsquadx8, just saw your desc.txt file, you have blank lines between the arguments

I usually put my animation in the media folder in froyo bread and it works...only thing I do is make a copy of the zip file and will name the two zip files bootanimation_cm6.zip and bootanimation_cm7.zip....and will keep these both files in system>media folder....
when making the animation I usually takes the dimensions of the picture around 256x256 pix...also in the text file I write 320 480 as my resolution...this will help to stretch my pic to full screen......
Okey thanks everyone it works fine now !!!!

Are you sure that they work? I haven't tried them but i noticed that the desc.txt files have blank lines between the arguments and i'm not sure if android likes those filenames... For ex, you named them xxxx_280x420.png and i think that the number sequence "xxxx" must be at the end of the name, although i can be totally wrong
Anyway, one thing you can do is to reduce the color number to 256 and those 3MB files will drop to half a kilobyte
so ive been trying to make my own boot animation but for some reason i just get a blank white screen.
i made the desc.txt and part0 into a zip file via store (not compressed).
triple checked everything, but it still wont work. are the picture files too big? can someone help me out?

in his desc.txt delete line 24 480 800 to register and try to go 480 800 15
p 1 15:confused , but I'm not sure
Free program Boot Animation Factory. I lost link, but you can google and download. It will let you preview your zip before you put on phone. It will let you create your own boot animation. It save me a lot of time as I made few mistakes too.
so, I decided to try and create my own bootanimation. It worked, but my problem is with the text portion of the zip. Here are my numbers in the text
624 352 30
p 0 0 part 0
I only have one folder, part 0, but I thought the animation would play indefinately until booting was done. The animation played, but only once, then stayed on the last pic until the phone finished booting. I enjoy tinkering with my phone, but am definately out of my comfort zone. Any help with the setting would be appreciated. Thanks in advance...
Did you compare your custom zip with that of others that work already?

I briefly looked, but I am only using one folder with animation images, all of the other zips that I looked at have two folders with animation images..I just started this process over the last couple of days...I'll eventually get it figured out, just thought I would come to the pros:laugh:

Well then the second folder is probably the second half of the animation or some part of the cycle to keep it going, you'll have to do it like the others for it to work like the others unless you mod the system to do otherwise.
I think I may have found my issue...

from this page...
The part0 folder contains .png files which boot but do not loop. The part1 folder contains your .png files which will loop over and over again. The desc.txt are the settings you can tweak including how big you want your custom boot animation to display.
I was only using the part0 folder..will try again tomorrow...if anyone wants to chime in with advice, have at it...

A little research goes a long way.
well, back to the drawing board...that didn't work for me..played with it for about an hour, tried several different changes...nothing but a black screen...
