That's all, folks... - Motorola Droid X2

Caved in for some 4G goodness (It's starting to boom in my area) and got the Thunderbolt. Out of the box it's faster than the X2 rooted and ROM'd. Anyway, I returned my X2 within the 14 day period to get it, so no more Droid for me. Thanks to everyone for all their help and best of luck to the Devs!

No 4 g in my area, so that means nothing to me for the time being. And out of box, I would disagree the Tbolt is faster/better from my experiences with it. Each to their own, but I find the Tbolt sluggish, with a VERY dim screen. Running on a year old processor. I woulda waited and got at least the Vigor or one of the newer offerings, although that would have pushed you past your return date. Good luck anyway and if you are like me you won't keep a phone over 6 months without upgrading anyway.

When'd you test a TBolt? Lol. Earlier versions of the phone were horrible. But, the one I have is blazing fast (found a kernel to OC to 2.03GHz as well) I love Sense, and it's nice not having to switch to another launcher because the stock is so sluggish. =p. First thing I did with a fresh install of an X2 ROM was change to either Launcher 7 or GoLauncher.

I originally had the TBolt, but returned it after a week due to horrific battery life and overall sluggishness. Im sure they've worked out some of the bugs w with updates, but 3 months ago it was a pretty horrible phone out of the box imo. 4g however, was noticeably faster than 3g.

Should I buy a thunderbolt?

I love my incredible but am thinking of upgrading. Is the thunderbolt awesome? Are you satisfied with the single core or do you wish you waited for a dual?
I know how fast things get obsolete so do you think the tbolt has what it takes to persist a while inspite of all the dual core 4g's on their way?
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
I upgraded from incredible. After having the thunderbolt for over a month, I'm glad I did it. Especially when comparing the two phones side by side. It is plenty fast without dual core.
before getting the tbolt i was really concerned if it was worth using a upgrade; would it be the phone i could happily spend the next 2 years with etc. To this day i am still amazed what it can do, and the 4gLTE is insanely fast. I could happily use this phone for the next 2 years. I upgraded from the original droid FWIW.
Same here, I'm happy with my Thunderbolt. It's a beast when rooted and OC'd

I upgraded from the OG as well. I miss my D1 some, but it was my first android device. I am happy with my TBolt. I was concerned that I was buying outdated technology as well, but I knew that I would not be an early adopter of the dual core devices. There will likely be some issues initially and hopefully the kinks will be worked out when I ready to upgrade again. The biggest factor that played into my decision to purchase the TBolt was 4G and the fact that my area will have it by the end of the year. I got to use it a few days while on a business trip and it is blazing fast.

I just got one a couple days ago (wife went with iPhone... eh, I forgive her), I came from a Droid X. Hands down, loving the phone. LTE wont be in my area until summertime, so looking forward to that. Like how much more customized the bolt can be compared to my X. Phone is plenty fast too. Sense isn't too shabby either (least I dont think so) Only downside (Im sure this has been beaten to death) is battery life. I do have the extended battery, but believe mine may be defective (forever to charge, and doesnt ever seem to charge fully). Try the phone out though, 14 days. Doubt you'll take it back though.

Creating themes was much easier on the X. Up until I just flashed the stripped Das Bamf I haven't had as good of performance on my TB as my X with Liberty or ApeX, but now thats changed.

[Q] X2 vs TB

Hello forum,
I've read about 9 hrs worth of info on here in 2 days. I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. I will try and keep this short, I might fail.
I came from an org d1 with cm7, great phone. Its old hardware and I was due for an upgrade.
I just got the HTC Thunderbolt 2 days ago. I'm not very impressed with it AT ALL. I realllllly hate the HTC SENSE gui. I've never liked HTC to begin with. But the TB had 4g (which I just found out I wont get untill 2013) and a FF Camera. I don't really care about 4G anymore, any good crap I do over WiFi anyways. As far as the FF Camera, it was fun, im over it.
I have 14 days (12) to change my mind and was told I can switch phones. I really wanted the X2 in the first place, but I went with the TB. What I really want is just a beast phone that can last 2 years with upcoming tech. Everyone I hear talking about the dual core stuff says its over rated because no OS or APPs use it yet. I've been watching some Videos on the X2 and Im liking it more.
What I wonder is if its going to have any development? The HTC TB already has tons of custom ROMs and CM7 is about there. Do you guys think the X2 will get any attention? Will there be custom ROMs? I really dont like MOTOBLUR but I would be able to put up with it for 6 months over the sense.
How is the battery? Without 4G even turned on I cant even get a full day off this TB.
Is it pretty smooth and fast? I'm a little worried about the RAM .... 512 vs 768? I mean coming from the D1 512 should be fine..... but does it feel smooth?
Are there ways right now (I know you can root) to debloat it and take off MOTOBLUR ? I really just want a clean AOSP, but I'm very willing to wait for development. I just wonder if the X2 will get any attention.
Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Sorry so long.
If you want custom roms then stick with the Thunderbolt. Until the Motorola bootloader gets unlocked you won't be able to fully flash a custom rom.
Also the X2 does not have MOTOBLUR on it. And yes it is possible to root using gingerbreak and remove any bloatware.
I just got my X2 yesterday and the UI seems to be a lot smoother with the dual core processor compared to my old X. If you don't get 4G coverage then I would definitely go with the X2. Also in my experience Motorola phones tend to have better battery life over HTC.
The X2 does have MOTOBLUR but it is the updated version they use normally with gingerbread which is not as bad as the version they had before.
As for development like the previous poster said, until Motorola unlocks the bootloader and an sbf is found/created. ROMs are out of the question at the moment..
Personally I came from the TB and although the TB had all the custom ROMs th X2 has made me happy with the smooth UI, after some tweaking, and the battery life is alot better.
It's going to be a trade-off. If you like to root/ mod you're going to have to wait on the X2 for a while. I read they just cracked the Droid X for CM 7, so there's hope but no idea on when we might have a full range of option for the X2.
On the other hand, the DX2 works great out of the box and my only major complaint is no Gingerbread yet. I've used both and, given the TB's battery life sucks and I'm not around a 4G area at work or home and won't be for a while, the X2 is the better option in my opinion. The TB is not a bad phone over all, but without the 4G it's not a compelling device to need right now IMO.
I'd recommend you go with the X2 and wait until 4G LTE is both widespread and all the bugs are worked out in the system.
I've tried all of Verizon's 4G phones within my 14 day return period. (I'm paying full price, so I didn't just want to settle with playing with a floor model for a few minutes to make a decision.) Anyway, it was something about each one that made me not want to keep them. (Although I saw the Charge received an update that made the phone 2-3 times better from what I'm reading from users across different forms.) But I settled with the DX2. Far better signal than any of the others I had. Much better battery life. Better build quality by far. As smooth as the Thunderbolt, even with 512 of RAM. And it has the Dual Core processors, which will eventually be beneficial once more phones get them and more developers start working around them, software and app wise. I get 4G in my area in 2 months and I still choose to go with a 3G phone, because a page loading a few seconds faster on 4G than mine does on 3G, has absolutely no importance in my life. I think ffc's are kind of overrated right now, but will be the norm in the future when almost everyone has a phone with a camera on it. We can only hope Motorola will unlock the bootloader. I doubt Verizon would approve of that, but still, the original Droid X received some pretty good attention from dev's. As you can see, it was thought of enough that someone worked hard to get CM7 on there. So the dev attention will be there.
Thanks for all your help guys..... still a tough choice...
But since the X2 has a "locked bootloader" that means there will never be custom ROMs untill MOTO themselfs release an update to unlock it or what? Did the ORG droid X have a locked bootloader? Wasnt there custom roms on it?
I had a thunderbolt but the battery life was just to bad for me to keep it when i was near stl and had 4g it went from 100% to 25 in no time flat so i couldnt handle that. the droid x2 with all the bloat ware ran decently fast but once u take off bloat ware its great phone with much better battery but if you want 4g id say go with lg revolution it seems to be better i only played with in store but i liked it also

No, Yes and Yes. The bootloader on the original X is still locked. That just means that you don't have complete control over the kernel. Custom roms can certainly still be added once root is established. Also, if anybody's been watching the blogs, CM7 has been release for the original X. It's a bit of backwards magic of loading overtop and after the original kernel, but it's reported to be working great.
Indeed, I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that CM7 on the DX means we're in line for it on the X2!

Haha, me and you are both in the same place
I'm leaning towards returning the X2 and getting the Tbolt, but the extra $135 I'll have to pay is making me unsure..since I have no income.
The good thing is, is that I read earlier today that the new Nexus phone is supposed to have a LTE radio. (Verizon maybe?!) Either that or the Galaxy S 2..both seem like good choices.

I would, but I can't afford $300 for a phone .. I mean after trading in my X2, I'd have to pay like $150 dollars, unless its "lowest promotional price" is less than $299.

Besides, the Charge is still a single core phone.
OMG ! Some of you people are so picky! If I could have my X2's babies I would! I love this phone and I'm in the same situation as the OP. I won't get 4G til around until 2013 and I'll be eligible for an upgrade in January 2013. By then, I'm hoping to get whatever new multi-core, 4G, 3D display, FFC phone they have because I'm sure all of that will be more of a standard *AND* hopefully there will be better battery life for those kinds of features. Until then, gogo Droid X2!
FFC isn't all that great without 4G anyway and even if it was great on 3G, I still don't see myself using it until video calling becomes much more popular. I don't even know anyone else with an FFC for video calling, so how useful is that?? You gotta ask yourself: Who do I know with FFCs? and: Are we really gonna video chat a lot? Unless you're a hardcore SKYPEr or you are on business trips away from your wife and kids a lot, why not just stick to the casual video chatting you may or may not do on your PC?
Minus the custom ROM this is still a great phone and handsdown a top choice if you're gonna be outside the 4G bubbles for a while! Just sayin'.
You won't see any custom development until both an SBF file and the first update to the phone release. For the record, I'm quite surprised neither have leaked yet. Usually the SBF leaks in the first week or two and there is an update within the first couple weeks to fix stability issues. The X2 has so many stability issues that I think they're just going to push GB to the device rather than try to fix all the Froyo problems. That being said, it could still be a while before we see GB. I also wouldn't own this phone without being willing to root it. Too unstable without being able to fix the memory allocation problems.

That's a good point. Now that I think about it, a single core phone isnt worth $300 dollars , even if it has 4G... I just rooted my X2, and now I going to try to uninstall the bloat, but it already feels faster.

I'll second the comment that nearly all the VZW phones involve compromises of some sort. The compromises on the X2 are the lack of 4G, the not-quite-top-tier screen, and the fact that we might not see custom ROMs for a very long time.
That said, my phone is my lifeline, and the X2 meets my need for good build quality, good reception, a loud speaker (I'm a little hard at hearing), and that can get me into and out of my work-related apps quickly.
I feel like I got a good PHONE that's solid, loud, reliable, and pretty quick. Good enough for me for now. If I get Cryogen on it, then all the better, but it won't kill it for me.
Chris
I had the TB and it was a POS. Bad gps, light leaks, horrible battery, terrible speaker, kickstand started peeling after a month. I'm not saying my DX2 is perfect, but it kicks the TB's ass. Love my dual core monster.

Should I buy it?

I was in the sprint store today getting my evo shift repaired and saw the photon and thought it looked and felt great. Sine then I did some research and there are a lot of unhappy Customers.
Does this phone live up to the hype?
Yes, this is the best phone on sprint right now all phones have their quirks and this one has some but it is by far the best phone I have ever owned. major upgrade from a shift.

I switched from the shift 4g and I also gave the epic touch a try. I agree that this is the best phone on the market. It has great signal and call quality , great battery life and a large, bright screen that is easily usable in direct sunlight. Motorola has been very, very good about updates and I would not be surprised if this is one of the first phones on sprint to see ice cream sandwich. Grab it, you wont regret it.

I'm on my fourth Photon. I have the random reboot issue. Lately my launcher has been acting weird. All the icons get jumbled together. As it stands the phone is garbage.

Can't go wrong with getting this phone. Fast out of the box, easy to root (haven't messed w/ the bootloader yet), and w/ Google purchasing Moto Mobile, there is no logical reason why this phone WON'T get continuous updates for quite a while. Plus development is picking up....

Are you running a custom launcher? I had a similar issue when using Go launcher, I installed launcher pro and the issue was gone. It was the launchers problem not the phone.

I came from Epic with the super AMOLED screen. This screen is not as bad as some would say. After a few days I don't even notice. The rest of the phone is top notch. I love having more reception than everybody else. The battery life is great. It's very fast and has a superior GPU to GSII. GSII also has lots of problems (loss of signal, rapid battery drain) and no updates in sight after more than a month. Evo 3d doesn't have the internal memory to keep more things off of SD card, which speeds things up. In my opinion, there isn't a better dual core at Sprint.

I left tmobile and the vibrant and came to sprint. I had the epic for about 2 weeks when the photon dropped. I was not a fan of the 3d and wanted a phone with great battery life and a bright screen in the daytime. This phone has exceeded my expectations. I do however wish the stock launcher wasn't so laggy, but Launcher Pro fixed that. Although their aren't many roms flowing in the forums I remain positive that there will be. Also this phone has the best reception for signal and wifi I have ever seen. I love it, and would recommend it over sprints other phones at the moment.
I would imagine most, if not all, of the people having problems with their MoPhos were running older firmware. When I first received the phone, it was running 45.2.5(?), which is 3 updates old. It was snappy, but I had horrendous battery life. However, after the updates, it's even faster and the battery life is fantastic. Moreover, reception is much better than any other smartphone I've played with.
You'll notice that on the Sprint website, the MoPho is not as highly rated as the Epic Touch. I assumed that was from the early adopters who were frustrated with the phones before Motorola released the updates.
You'd be hard pressed to find a better phone from any carrier. Sure, several phones on the market have a larger screen and/or faster processor, but I doubt any of these phones have the MoPho's battery life.
Lastly, of any phone on the market, I think we'd be one of the most likely to get the long-awaited Ice Cream Sandwich.
When I got my Photon I was going back and forth between this and the GSII and in the end the geek in me won out. I got the Photon for the HDMI out, and the webtop feature. I don't think "stock" webtop is super useful or interesting in it's current state but I think it has so much potential. I can see Google replacing the current linux build with a version of chrome OS, even if it doesn't hit my phone. I am confident it could be ported in the future. I've only started to play with modding the webtop partition but I've already learned so much about linux as well as it's similarities and differences from android. As an intermediate user I love to get in and mod my phone and webtop gave me a new challenge to expand my knowledge. Plus it's a dead sexy phone. I miss my super amoled screen on my epic4g but that will fade. I'm gald I got the photon and I look forward to future development.
I'm super happy with my Photon. I came from the Evo to this phone. It's worth the upgrade in my opinion. And a lot of the people that are unhappy with it are either because A) there isn't enough ROM's and **** to customize it or B) they did something to **** the phone up then blame the phone for their mistake. There are a couple of people that have legitimate issues, but most of those have been fixed via updates. Of which have come out quickly, so it's worth it IMO.
Yes... absolutely, yes. Especially now that we have a lapdock.

The eris is a FLAMING TURD

I can live with the random reboots, battery life that is 8 hours one day and 2 hours the next, flaky ass performance, incomprehensibly slow UI, and it's like watching turd paste slide off a window. I mean, it is like 2 years old. But when I spend an entire 30 minute car ride trying to get it to make a phone call amid reboots and 10-minute-long UI freezes, I think it's time to face facts:
This phone is aflaming turd. My friends who have OG droids (released the same time, mind you) never have these problems. Their UI actually responds to touch! :O WHOOOAAAAAAA.
For reference, I'm running CM7, though this steaming pile of excrement has persisted through half a dozen ROMs including the stock OS that I've run over the past 2 years. So hey, at least it's not some configuration problem of mine! I can rest comfortably knowing my aggression is directed squarely at the retarded self-mother lovers responsible for this worthless garbage. Thank, you, HTC.
Let's see how samsung does. When is that galaxy nexus release date again? >_<
</rant>
*mod edit* - Feel free to rant, but let's keep it clean.
It is an old phone. Its processor is slower than the Droid. It has a quarter gig of ram. I think it has the same processor as the original G1 that shipped with android 1.5. The Eris was out of date a month after it shipped.
The trackball doesn't work. The touchscreen is dead across the whole QWERTY row in portrait mode. My vibration motor was stuck on and had to be manually removed from the motherboard.
I'm amazed it is as responsive as it is, considering. The devs have done near magic compared to stock. But there's only so much blood you can squeeze out of a turnip.
That being said, I'm on the galaxy S2 and this thing flies. Faster than the galaxy nexus, IMO.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
In the context of the rapid evolution of Android phones, the Eris is ancient. It is amazing how fast things have moved in the Android world. My contract is up soon and I am really looking forward to getting a new phone.
I have to say that I have been impressed with how my Eris has held up. I knew that it was slow when I bought it, but I didn't want a giant brink like the Droid in my pocket. I was quite happy that Froyo ran on it. When my Eris booted into gingerbread, I was amazed. With that said, it certainly wasn't ever meant to run gingerbread and shouldn't be expected to run CM7 without some issues. Many of the newer phones that were built for gingerbread also have issues with reboots, so you can't really blame the Eris for that.
I still use my Eris everyday--not as a phone though (I've had a Droid X since its launch day).
I've run all kinds of ROMs on it (stock, Froyo, GB, CM7), but am currently running a very good and stable xtrSENSE 5.0.1.
Kudos to everyone that have (and still do) worked so hard on keeping this little phone that could alive and kicking for so many folks.
I still check in on here occasionally and probably will for a long time to come.
Cheers!

Edit: My Eris is a Flaming Turd and I made the wrong choice when buying or am simply asking too much from a not so powerfull device.
There I fixed it for you.
I had a pretty good experiencing using KhoasFroyo and overclocking the CPU to 900mhz.
The motorola droid cpu combined with better video made it almost twice as fast as the eris, you have to keep that in mind.
i still use my eris daily, and with gsb 4.2, it has never been faster. i fully agree that the stock rom was trash, but come on, its like trying to run windows 7 on a 486.
Funny, I have always gotten decent battery life out of my Eris. I could easily go more than 24 hours, and sometimes as long as 36+ between charges..
Sounds like a /wetware error to me..
My battery life fluctuates, depending on what I seem to be using it for, though it does usually last a day (though there are some days when it runs pretty low). As far as speed goes, yes, it does get pretty sluggish at points, but when I had to buy a personal smartphone for work I had used my upgrade 6 months before to get a new non-smartphone, so a used Eris was the only used smartphone I could afford on Ebay or Craigslist.
So yes, I'm disappointed in the slowness and the occasional unresponsiveness when even trying to get it to call a contact, but it's something I'm willing to deal with until I'm eligible to upgrade in 4 months.
And I'm really appreciative of the guys like tazz, workshed, CS, and Mongoose that spend their time trying to enhance the eris experience for us, and the other people that take time to answer questions on these forums.
That is like saying that the Apple IIe was a piece of crap, of course it would be crushed by the competition in this day and age however it served its purpose well, the Eris is no different, be glad that you have custom Roms on it today because there were a good 4 months after launch where nobody could get anything to work and then a great time after that where we were still looking to root phones that got messed up by the leaked 2.1 image.
In all this phone was a great first Android experience for me especially being able to follow along with and attempt to help in the rooting process. This thing will be with me after I've left Verizon even if it is only for an occasional MP3 player or wifi remote.
I still use my Eris daily (no home screen widgets though, way faster) GSB 4.2 installed and works great.
BTW I have another Eris with Kaos Froyo on it (lazy) used as a wifi remote left in airplane mode, that thing never dies however use is VERY minimal, alternate uses for this thing do exist.
If you still think your Eris sucks then try removing all of the widgets on your home screen that are eating up all of your battery/processing power/RAM (do you REALLY NEED them?) it will breathe new life into the thing for sure, hell maps barely crashes any more.

Hello

Just felt like mentioning that you now have another new owner of the Droid Incredible 4G LTE. I finally got it yesterday and am enjoying it greatly. Coming from the original Droid Incredible, this is a huge step up. The slightly larger size takes a little getting used to while typing, though.
I waited for a long time for this phone to come out, and I'm excited to finally have one. Not having posted in a long time on XDA, I decided to get a fresh start with a new account. I've been monitoring the situation with S-OFF on this phone, and can't wait to hear from andy and the S-OFF team that they've achieved it so we who bought the phone more than 2 weeks after it came out can get rooted!
I prefer Sense over stock Android, and with all the barely- or half-completed Sense 2 and 3 ROMs for the Inc, I primarily stuck to using the stock HTC rooted, de-odexed ROMs by wildstang83. Sense 4 is a huge improvement over Sense 1. Also, you have to love Ice Cream Sandwich and its ability to disable all the apps you won't ever use that still take up space (which is a great reason to get rooted, to delete them permanently). The last ROM I sampled from the Inc forum was a very sluggish, not even half-working beta of Jellybean, and while there was no HWA, it was still an interesting experience with Google Now, and I can't wait for the Inc 4G to get Jellybean, though, if it's anything like the timetable on the OG Inc, it will be at least 6 months before the first incremental update (as it was for Eclair to Froyo, and 10 months for a broken version of Gingerbread).
Anyway, all I wanted to say was I'm excited to be here with this community that has worked quite well together this far, and I hope the cooperation continues.
Welcome aboard partner.
Do please post in the 'battery life experiences' thread after you've used your phone for a week or so.

Great to see ya IceDragon. Have patience with the S-Off situation it'll come eventually. Frankly, I'd run a Stock Inc 4g over just about anything else that is rooted right now. They just perform that well.
If ya need help with anything, just ask.
