Does the AT&T SGS2 have an FM radio? The European version of both SGS1 and SGS2 both do, but the US SGS1 does not.
I'm wondering the same. AT&T site says it does. But I haven't seen an icon or it mentioned in the reviews.
No radio

I called AT&T about this, making the customer service rep go to the site and see that they claim that the device has an FM radio tuner/receiver. The guy then put me on hold and came back and assured me that it does have an FM radio. When I asked how to access the radio (i.e. what app and/or drivers) he said I would have to talk to Samsung, and gave me the phone number: 1-88-987-4357.
So I called Samsung and asked them about it: twice. Both times I explained my question (how do I access the radio?). Both times I was told that it does have a radio, but when asked the how-do-i-make-it-work question was put on hold. Both times I was on hold for more than half an hour and had to hang up to do something else.
I'll be going to the AT&T store later (hopefully today) and will ask the sales rep there to show me how the radio works. I'll report back.

The AT&T reps are probably going based on their paper documentation.
I can tell you, without a doubt, either:
1) The FM radio chipset is different from the international version
2) The FM radio chipset just isn't there
Enabling the Si4709 driver in the kernel results in a bunch of error messages when the driver tries to initialize, the kind one would expect for missing hardware.
The framework in userland is also missing things needed for FM support. Attempting to use the FM app from the I9100 fails due to missing Java methods.
My guess is that AT$T wants you to use a streaming based FM radio service instead of having a tuner in the phone so they can cash in on the data usage.

I'm sure you're right, but they do advertise a built-in FM radio. Have a look at the Music section on the Details tab of:

Unfortunately, no answers. I was at the AT&T store today and the sales reps knew nothing abut the radio (i.e. "you have to download an app"). So I got them to download an app (various apps) to one of the demo phones in the store and asked them to show me the radio working. The couldn't get it to work. One sales rep told me that it will likely come as part of the firmware upgrade that will be released in about a month, but of course that requires that the hardware is present. I also spoke with a customer service rep over the phone (while at the store) and she told me two things:
1. get the Manual from Samsung and look it up there (she was unable to do so, or so she said)
2. if there is no radio "you have a legitimate complaint"
Well, the manual has absolutely no mention of an FM radio. Seems like option 2. will likely come into play.
TuneIn Radio is a great app, miles better than iheart radio, I couldn't get the radio stations from back home in the UK that I liked, this app found them without any trouble.
Sucks if your on limited data though, unless your hooked up to a Wi-Fi spot.
I've been wondering the same darn thing.
I know for a fact it's been stated in everything that I've been reading.
What the........
Time to save screenshots of all of these FM radio claims!!!!
Does anyone with a rooted system know if the kernel supports the lspci or modprobe commands or any other command to print hardware?

4 months to release in the US only to "cripple" the phone, thanks att. I will not be getting this phone if the FM does not work, ill go with the international version
There is no FM radio app on the Sprint version either. Is there an app from the market for us to try?
It gets really tiring putting up with AT&T's b.s. They always fn up every phone I want to get by removing or having removed something that should be left the hell alone. Pisses me right off. I was looking forward to having the FM radio on this phone. Bastards!!!
im almost tempted to buy international version...its like $500 though
The web site also stated that we only get 3 hours of talk time. I have the inspire 4g also that can do FM radio but it only gets a very few channels and not worth being called a feature.

Yes, lsmod works.
A bit more info:
Stock kernel/initramfs is missing the Si4709 driver
If you enable the Si4709 driver in a custom kernel, it will fail to initialize
If you compile the module as above, but then disable the driver but leave the compiled module in the initramfs - it loads and initializes!
This is a weird one - evidence we have the hardware but the driver is currently broken in the Samsung sources.
FM is also completely missing from the framework. jivy26 sent me the FM radio APKs from an I9100 for me to try, they force close due to a missing method in the framework.
Just spent my third hour on the phone with Samsung (2 calls Monday, 1 call today), and finally talked to a sensible person in level 3 support. He couldn't locate an SGH-I777 to fiddle with himself but logged everything I said about what I (and others) had tried in getting the FM radio tuner to work.
He /did/ confirm that the device specs do show a radio to be extant, which is good news.
He said that because this is not yet a "known issue" all they could do would be to have me mail the device to Samsung and they would flash new firmware, etc. He was intelligent enough to say that, because the device is so new, this would not be the best approach, but instead suggested I hang on and see what happens in the near future.
So, everyone call Samsung (1-888-987-4357) and let's get this logged as a known issue. Fingers crossed that a firmware upgrade will solve this issue (and soon).
I agree with all this!
One of the biggest pet peeves of mine was that the Captivate lost the FM Radio from the i9000. If the hardware is in there, I'm sure eventually people will figure it out. (Also, a nice tear-down of a SGH-i777 would probably do wonders too).
But, take screenshots of that AT&T page! Keep it on record! And complain!

The Moto spec sheets say there is one. Is this like Zork, where you have to look under a grating in a dark closet? I've used headphones but didn't see any "radio" options happen.

fm radio
Yes there is an FM radio but you can't use it just yet. There is an app called CMP Connected Media Player that Motorola is working on but not released yet. There is a leaked version out there that connects to the FM receiver but it is not working (yet). Maybe they haven't enabled that feature yet, or maybe AT&T is blocking it because they want you to pay for their radio service, we don't know yet. I installed CMP and it is only half completed so it's probably best to wait for the official release whenever that will be. CMP uses the SAME icon and title as the current installed music player, so when you install it you will have 2 identical music app icons....like I said it may be better to just wait until the official release.

Any info on when it might be released?
Thanks, Panflute. Some things I'll meddle with, but resist the temptation to meddle for FM radio right now. I've got a chip full of MP3 stuffed in there that can keep me happy for a long time, and I'd like to explore the full range of lockups and lapses (Huh, was someone trying to use me as a phone?!) first.
The phone seems to get lost every once in a while, but that seems to be an Android thing, I'm guessing some tasks (like connecting to Google) sometimes take 100% CPU utilization and just don't bother telling the user to "wait please".
The Atrix has an FM chip inside that is true, but also the Milestone 2 has one and there is still no working fm app for that phone. Motorola only seems to activate the fm radio on there lower priced phones. I don't know why. In Motorolas specs list is nothing to find about a working fm radio. But something officially about the fm radio would change my mind.

Forgive me if this is obvious...But you know the FM radios only work if you have a headset plugged in? They use the headset wire as the FM antenna. I'd expect the hardware won't "run" the radio unless it detects earbuds are plugged in.

Yes my headset was plugged in, the app won't open without the headset, unfortunately it's not working...
I just tried it, doesn't seem to work yet. I have headphones in and it says it's playing, but there no sound.
I have to disagree with just waiting for Motorola to unlock this feature. The dev community had to unlock it for the Droid 2 as well...
I wonder why Motorola can advertise that the Atrix has the FM Radio with RDS, but their only service provider for now which is AT&T does not mention it at all.
I really don't want to blame anyone, but I miss this feature very much. One of the main reasons I purchased the Atrix is because I wouldn't be losing any existing features of my older phone.
Does anyone know the status of the Motorola Connected Music Player app?
Just wondering if anyone knows if there's been any progress on this.
It's gone now.
the broadcom chip on the phone supports fm radio but there isn't an application that has been developed to use it.
so unless some dev has ample knowledge of the broadcom chip and develops a new app for it, we won't get support.

"I wonder why Motorola can advertise that the Atrix has the FM Radio with RDS, but their only service provider for now which is AT&T does not mention it at all."
That's an easy one to answer. If you buy an Atrix from Motorola, you can get it with the FM radio working. Oh, wait, that's right, Moto doesn't sell any of them.
So you buy it from AT&T, who has all their phones built/configured "OEM" just for AT&T's own specs, and funny thing, you get what AT&T advertises: No radio.
And that's the way the game is played. Buy it from Moto, you're entitled to a radio. Buy it from AT&T, you're not. Unless someone can convince the FTC or another agency that kneecapping hardware is an unfair trade practice that falls under their regulation.

But that doesn't make any sense, you just stated buy it from Moto, I'm entitled to radio, but just above that you say Moto doesn't sell any of them. So my conclusion would be I can't purchase one with an FM Radio working out of the box. If this is the case, it would definitely be false advertising.
My lawyer senses were tingling. I'm not that kind of attorney, but I'm pretty sure there's no false advertising here. Did AT&T tell you you were getting a radio? Sucks, yes. Actionable, no.
"But that doesn't make any sense, you just stated buy it from Moto, I'm entitled to radio, but just above that you say Moto doesn't sell any of them. What's false? Who's advertising? Think about it, your conclusion is correct. YOU can't purchase one, at this time, with a working radio. Or perhaps you could, if you bought one directly from Moto. AT&T probably has some exclusive with them, but no doubt you could order a hundred thousand phones after that runs out, and have them FM radio function implemented for you. Ohyeah, wholesale, retail, there are all kinds of markets and Moto never has, AFAIK, sold phone directly retail. If AT&T or some other carrier chooses to kneecap the product, or just supports a partial feature set...well, what's false about that, as long as they tell you what they are or aren't delivering?
Is it, perhaps, what some of us would opine "ungentlemenly conduct" or "not the best behavior" ? Or perhaps, bordering on "smarmy" ? Does the phrase "What WHERE they THINKING?" come to mind?
Well...if it was, that still doesn't necessarily make it false or illegal. Heck, the cellcos are allowed to charge 1000x more for SMS than they do for voice calling time, and that's not illegal. So, this one wants you to pay for data rates and get your music by the byte, rather than for free. Sadly, that's the way capitalism works. Or, not so sadly, when you're the capitalist.<G>
I'd suspect there's good pocket change to be made by any programmer who can sell a little applet to enable the radio. Like the Chinese ideogram, or the tarot card, that has two meanings: Chaos, and opportunity. All the same, no?
Now, if Moto had only released the Atrix in a ruggedized body, like the T-Mob Defy! Who knows, maybe in six months time. With an FM radio. And supporting the data bands from BOTH carriers. <G>
I'm definitely excited that this new radio firmware has been leaked, but my dilemma is thus:
My wife and I both have Thunderbolts. I've rooted mine, thrown on custom ROMs, kernels, etc, but hers is stock. Her battery life is MUCH worse on stock than mine, even with the brightness, sync, etc turned down, so she's about to the point of wanting me to root/flash hers too.
Unfortunately, we may have to return her phone as the speakerphone is all but unusable due to feedback/noise issues while in a call. I know it's fairly simple to return a phone to stock, and Verizon can't tell over the air what ROM or kernel you're using, but from what I can gather, they CAN tell what radio version you're using. If I have to return her phone for warranty issues, will they see that she's had the leaked radio firmware and thus deny the claim?
if you are going to return it why go through the hassle of rooting and what not just return it then root the new one and install the new radio version.

I agree. Just return the phone now if you are having problems.
I concur, but Verizon is giving me the runaround as I have yet to be able to reproduce the issue for them over the phone or in store. My main concern wasn't so much with rooting and flashing, but more of whether to use the "unauthorized" radio firmware update.

In my experience, the employees at the Verizon stores know less about the Thunderbolt than I do. I had to get my SD card replaced (twice), and though my phone wasn't rooted I doubt they would have noticed, and I would bet that they wouldn't notice a different radio on your wife's device.
Also, didn't Jcase release an unmodified/signed RUU of the new radio? Sounds to me like that would be indistinguishable from an "authorized" radio update. (Disclaimer: I am not an expert and this is pure speculation which would very well be 100% false.)

Will have to look in to that. Guess I'm paranoid about them flagging my account as "teh haxx!" from using an unreleased radio.
If you plan to do a lot of tethering, wired or wireless, I don't suggest you flash it. Other than that you really have nothing to worry about.
Just call tech and tell them the phone wont boot, they cant get you to trouble shoot a phone that wont boot up. They never check the phones you warranty out. I've warrantied out phones with cracked screens, water damage, you name it.

Why do you recommend not flashing the new radio if you are tethering?
Because, it isn't released yet. There have been reports (i.e. claims) of VZW cracking down on people who tether a lot and are running the unreleased radio. True or not, it's your decision.
When the ThunderBolt came out I had the iPhone 4. I had just gotten it from my sister's line 14 days before. I was going to upgrade from the 16gb to the 32gb but then I saw the ThunderBolt and changed my mind. Since I've had the BlackBerry Storm (CrackBerry was my favorite site), the iPhone 3GS (Jailbroken) Moto Droid OG (Rooted), Incredible (Rooted), I have had a long line of never leaving my phone stock. My iPhone 4 was no different. I was at work and didn't have time to un-Jailbreak it so I left it that way and brought it to the store. The reps took back the phone and I got the ThunderBolt. Needless to say, the reps are all about making money and trying to up sell you on accessories. They barely ever check the software of the phone.
related but a bit off topic
Dumb question.. This is related but, a bit off topic, since I'm gonna wait and root once gingerbread arrives (yeah yeah, i know), if I install the new UNROOTED Ruu will I still be able to receive the OTA version incase anything is different or changed in it? Also, will it affect getting OTA gingerbread??? Thanks to all!
When I got my Thunderbolt the rep told me about this site and we had a discussion about rooting. He had an iPhone4 which was jailbroken. He was going to get a Thunderbolt and he was looking forward to rooting it and trying some ROM's.
Another rep came over and joined the discussion. They obviously are 'unofficially' fine with it.
Your mileage may vary with reps. They aren't supposed to activate or look at any phone with third party software. But after activating my t-bolt and talking to a rep about rooting it he mentioned he turned away a kid with a X with liberty1.5. Just don't come in like and asshole. Think of your job, you're more than willing to go above and beyond for someone thats 'cool' and not looking for something for nothing.
Worse comes to worse, if you purchased the monthly warranty for your phone just tell them you lost it and pay the fee to get another one. That way they have no clue about anything.
Just pull the battery incase you have the find my android activated with them

Just got a Cincinnati Bell Vibrant today (running froyo) - phone, etc., is just fine, absolutely no complaints, but I noticed almost immediately that the GPS won't acquire a lock. Not even on a single sat. I'm a GPS power-user (navigation, biking, running, etc. - I use it constantly), and this is a serious problem for me. I've never had a problem getting an instantaneous lock in this area on any of my previous phones. I tried the various fixes for the T-mobile Vibrant that are floating around the internet and all they do is grind my phone to halt. I grabbed the .apk for Samsung's GPSRestore app (because Cincinnati Bell won't make it available for us to download from the app store), but after "restoring" my settings, it tells me it can't acquire a lock and that I need to contact Samsung. Seeing as many people report improvement from the other fixes for their non-Cincinnati Bell phones, I just wanted to see if anybody has found anything that works for the Cincinnati Bell phones.
Thanks.
Cincinnati sucks for vibrant users. I've tried many roms and fixes and have never had adequate locks at all.
If gps is seriously important to you I would suggest returning the phone if possible.

If none of the GPS fixes worked for you just like me. Try the hardware fix below it works wonders !

I use my Vibrant on Cincinnati Bell and have never had a problem with gps.... Just try a couple of the GPS fixes here... Obviously you'll have to mod the phone to be able to flash.... The hardware and software is identical... T-mobile even appears in the build version under phone info... lol. Obviously if none of the fixes work then return the phone and get a new one.
What's more
Even more hilarious. If you take a bit of isopropanol and rub out the ugly "Cincinnati Bell" logo that they printed on, you will see it says T-mobile underneath! I laughed my a$$ when I saw that.

I actually just scratched it off with my fingernail when I got mine. CBW got a bunch of Vibrants and HTC Penaches (aka MyTouch4g) from TMo. As we know, CBW is notoriusly stubborn about their simlock policies. Once my contract is up (a few months), I am going flash it back to the Ultimobile 2.2 that was on there, unroot it and say to them, "You got this phone from TMo, simlocked it and you are telling me that you can't unlock it" I call BS.
Side Note: I had the Motorola XT720 which was manufacturer locked on 2.1 (with no upgrades ever planned). We were able to upgrade it ourselves by building 2.2 from the original Milestone A853 source. Few months later, CBW decides to give its customers Root and an "official" upgrade. Guess what, it was a hacked version of our version. We even saw some of our source buried in there. It was realeased by a sub-company Ultimobile. Now for the bad part. Because it was not really stolen (it is open source), from us, they put in a tracking code that if XT720 users outside of CBW market updated their phones, it would send data back to Ultimobile about who was using their product. Dirty Dirty Dirty. As soon as I got my Vibrant, i rooted it, found the code and instantly flashed a new ROM to get rid of it. Just an FYI
Going back to OP's issue, I have no problem whatsoever with GPS on CBW Vibrant. I just looked this morning and mine was made in Jan 2011.
Ditto what Woodrube said. While GPS with the Vibrant isn't stellar, it works reasonably well outdoors or in a car. The only issues I've run into were when using MIUI or CM7. The only fix I needed was to add an extra step (Angry GPS) before using Google Navigation and it was smooth sailing.
Try picking up a copy of AngryGPSMod.apk and doing a GPS test. It may suddenly start working as intended.
So does the Samsung Galaxy Note i717 have the hardware for an FM Radio or not? I saw some posts on it a while ago but really haven't heard anything about it.
I was wondering that myself, but your question got me looking. So I found this, and the answer is no to the FM Radio on the AT&T version, but the international version has the FM radio included. LTE might not coexist well with the Exynos chipset or FM radio ...dunno just a guess. Well let see......FM radio.....LTE.............LTE!

Nope, our good friends at AT&T decided to disable it at the hardware level.
So the radio is there, but apparently can't be accessed. And we suckers buy it anyway...people don't believe it when I say that the US is one of the least free mobile environments in the world, but time after time, it's clear the US consumer gets reamed.
Occupy AT&T anyone?
After a few hours on the phone with samsung customer service I have found out that the hardware is there and connected and that the "team" at Samsung may or may not be developing an app for it. Also they are not ready to release the information on the receiver to third party developers because the may or may no be working on an application for this in the first update.( also according to one person I had spoken to this update might come at the 4 week mark and might include s choice) I don't know how reliable any of this actually is but they its from Samsung them selves so. Hope this helps.
A week ago or so a got ATT variant of S9+ and spent a lot of time personalizing the phone only to find out at that the phone is affected by a serious glitch.
The screen unlocks when a call is initiated from Bluetooth car interface (with Safe Lock Off). I contacted Samsung customer service. After days of back and forth and after exhausting all remedies including full reset on a brand new phone the result was the same.
I tried the phone with my wife’s car. The same thing. Out curiosity, with help of ATT store manager I also tested her brand new Note 9 in my car. No difference. A call from car Bluetooth unlocks the screen. Plugging headphones in does not.
I returned the phone to ATT store for credit. Is it ATT variant's glitch or all S9+, Note 9 phones are affected?

I realize you returned your phone, but yes when I make a call from the car's touchscreen interface, the S9+ screen unlocks, but it turns off after my one minute delay and the call of course continues. I'm on AT&T also. I can't speak for other carriers but this is probably normal behavior. The S9+ is on Bluetooth 5.0 whereas most car systems are probably on 4.0. It is not 100% backward compatible as many people think. There are long threads on the Samsung forums about connectivity issues. Your auto dealer may have an update for your car's system.

Perhaps I didn't keep the connection live long enough, but my impression was that the phone locked only when I terminated the call. I don't believe that Bluetooth version plays any role here. My BMW 650i has up to date communication software installed. Imagine somebody leaving the phone in the car and the car gets stolen. Whoever has control over the car has access to information on the phone after making a call from the car. From corporate risk management point of view this is not acceptable. Samsung customer support was convinced that the phone is bad and they wanted me to send it for repair. After trying the Note 9 with the same end result, I started to suspect that perhaps the glitch affects ATT variants only. But if this normal, how can they fix it. I tried everything they suggested and at the end returned the phone. I posted my comments on ATT and Samsung websites. They were removed. Nobody tried to contact me.

What phones did you and your wife use before the S9+ that did not unlock the phone at all when you made a call from the car's interface? You might try one of the BMW forums to see what phone other owners are using. No one wants to wait forever for an update that may not come. My only suggestion at this point would be to try a different phone and manufacturer until you find one that works as it should with your car.

I am using HTC 10 and need slightly bigger screen, my wife IPhone. We went through many different cars and phones and had the same problem only once with some earlier HTC model. The outcry was so loud back then, that HTC patched that in a week or so.
