Enable sound settings in stock camera app - root required - Motorola Photon 4G

Okay I found a way to be enable the camera shutter option on the camera app. You have to be rooted and I used root explorer.
1.) Open root explorer
2.) go to System folder
3.) Enable R/W ability
4.) Hold down on build.prop and open in text editor mode
5.) Look for 'ro.media.capture.shuttertone' without quotes
6.) It will say 0 change it to 1
7.) Click the menu button and choose save and exit.
8.) Reboot - not sure if you need to, but I did.
9.) Open the camera app and click menu, settings.
10.) You will now have the option to enable or disable the shutter sound.
Pics provided. Please thank me if this is helpful.
Side note, there are a lot of options in the build prop, but the interesting part is there is a whole section for LTE settings, and it keeps refering to verizon wireless at least thats what I think VZW stands for.

It worked. for some reason when I first had my phone it made the shutter sound. Than somehow it went away. Now I applid your fix and I can enable it or disable it. Thanks.

Simply brilliant.
I've also noticed a ro.camcorder.videoModes=false parameter. Wonder what that does if set to true.

It requires a reboot, but it works really well. There are quite a few options in build.prop. Wonder if there are any other tweaks.

Blakeheartt12- Please clarify....will buildprop tweaks need to be restored to the original settings in order to receive future ota updates.
I believe I read something about that in another thread.

That I'm not sure about. I do not think enabling a setting will keep an update from happening. If it does its real quick and easy to change back.

Awesome, even more options! I'll have to enable that as well. Also, root explorer automatically makes a backup of the original file so if need be, you can easily restore the file to stock.

I tried the new video options but didnt see any difference. So my guess is they are not working.

Makes sense that they were disabled then.
But the shutter sound option was a great find. Never understood why camera phones needed that. There is no shutter so why does there need to be a fake sound? I know some old schoolers might like it and I don't mind it as an option, but why remove the option to enable/disable it. Stupid motoblur.

Re: the shutter sound is actually a requirement in many states (lot of creepers out there to keep up w/ evolving technology, i guess lol).
Re: add'l build prop tweaks I've found so far -
1) LCD Density setting *ro.sf.lcd_density"* (default is 240, you can go as low as 200 w/o causing conflict w/ system apps)
2) dalvik.vm.heapsize_48m (default is 48, can set as high as 64 w/o causing conflict w/ system apps, and as low as 32m). I'd personally leave this setting alone until development on this progresses, not sure how much of an impact this would have w/ stock kernel and other configurations. I put it @ 64m and ran w/ it for a few hours and noticed no significant improvements.

Awesome directions - worked great on my phone - LOVE the no sound click. So easy a newb can do it!

Ugh, stupid politicians making stupid unenforceable policies. Don't they have better things to deal with.
A determined pervert could simply do this hack or tape over the speaker with a thick cloth (like velour).
On the other hand, being able to turn off the shutter sounds have many very legit purposes. I personally use my camera to take pictures of notes during conferences and to take pictures of books in the library. Also, when I did community theatre, I would take pictures of my audio patchbay so I could check my hookups whenever we needed to change mics for whatever reason backstage during the show.

Thank you. Much better fix than "disable STREAM_SYSTEM_ENFORCED" solution.

Anyway to disable the beep sound and vibrate whenever I power down my phone?

[APP] Themed Video Caller ID [UPDATED 02/01/13]

hey guys.
this is one of my favorite apps. I've been running it since I had my Evo 3D nearly two years ago...and i'm still running it on the Note II. I thought some of you may be interested.
this is a themed, modded version of Video Caller Id (Free)
What I did was theme most of the image files to match the JellyBomb black/ICS blue look. Even now that I don't have JellyBomb I still love the look. I also made a few .xml changes so the layout of the information on the screen is a little better than the original.
YOUTUBE VIDEO
here is a YouTube video showing the app, the settings and some of the video ringtones i'm also including in this thread.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCtXHmIasyQ
INSTRUCTIONS
Code:
To Install:
Copy VideoCallerID.apk to /system/app/
Set permissions to RW-R--R--
Reboot. Enjoy.
---
Recommended Settings:
Activate the service = checked
Float video-view = unchecked
Use monitoring = checked
Opening delay option = 100ms (for Note II), 400ms (for S3), increase if the app doesn't start up when you get a call.
Ringer view = customize to your liking, I have all checked
Sound
- Video without sound = to your liking, I have it unchecked
- Maximum volume = to your liking, I have it checked
- Mute ringtone = unchecked (and set your ringtone on the phone's settings to silent, this works much better than having the app mute the ringtone for you)
- Say contact name = to your liking, I have it unchecked
---
How to use:
When you open the app, you see your contacts. You can set individual video ringtones per contact:
- Next to the contact's name, click on the Andy icon with the + sign, and then choose select video file.
- Browse to your video and select it.
- Now you can click on the contact's name and preview and change options for that specific contact
To set system-wide video ringtone:
- Click on the wrench icon on the top right
- Click on Default video
- Choose a default video for all contacts (with the exception of those with custom video ringtones)
- Choose a default video for unknown/blocked callers
- You can also preview whatever video is already set by pressing on the icon for that video.

Can anyone else confirm that u don't have to answer twice. I've had the pay for version of this app, damn near since it came out, and I've always had to answer twice. I wonder is the widget locker app that ur using changing this. I've tried changing the delay to 0ms, and I still have to answer twice. I haven't tried out this "revised version" because u said u just changed the aesthetics. But if i get more confirmation, that this is working, I'll definitely give it a try.

Exactly. I asked as well and the op said that u don't have to answer twice to accept calls. I too have the paid version. I'm about to try this and see what happens. I also have widget locker so I'll see what happens and post my results.
Edit: okay so after doing some testing with the app. I can confirm that u still have to answer the call twice. Even with widget locker it doesn't seem to override the default ringer. And I couldn't get the android man to play either. I had to pick my own videos that I made myself. Great app but having to slide to answer once and press the accept button again is a little annoying at times.

I have never tried the paid version. using this version, I have no problems.
however, I don't have the rosie sense installed. I use Widgetlocker and Launcherpro. I use easywake on widgetlocker so the htc lockscreen is disabled.
my settings in the video caller app are as follows:
Activate service = checked
Use monitoring = checked
Opening delay option = 0 ms
video without sound = unchecked
maximum volume = checked
mute ringtone = checked
Under ringer view I have:
all options checked except "swipe to answer" and "use hardware buttons"

Running root at 240 ppi

This is my first post here.
I recently switched from iPhone to Note 2. I was very drawn towards a large screen with lots of real estate. The note 2 out of the box didn't do it for me. However, I read the discussions about the international version and people changing the DPI with ROMs and other methods and figured if they could do it, so could I.
After waiting 5 weeks for my pre-order to arrive, then a week for the developers to provide a root option, I finally have my wish. Here is how I did it.
1. Root
2. Install a custom launcher (I installed nova, which works for me.) Set it as default
3. Install a new keyboard and set it as default
4. Install LCD Resolution from play store. I found nowhere that discussed this option, but I tested on a GS3, GS1, and Droid Charge and it worked better than the other DPI changers.
5. Set PPI to 240 in LCD Resolution. Uncheck Always Set on Boot until you know it will be stable. This caught me in a boot loop on the GS3. The only other res I tried was 160 and it failed.
6. Reboot.
It should work great. There are a few things to note:
1. The camera looks bad. I have not replaced it with a new one yet. - Please post any suggestions.
2. The calculator and dialer dont look amazing but are usable.
3. Email in portrait doesn't use the whole screen. I use it in landscape and it great.
4. Clock does not work, but can be replaced easily. I have not found a new alarm to use yet. - Please post any suggestions.
If you get another DPI to work well, let us know.
Otherwise, this is a great mod if you need more real estate on your new screen without loosing any of the s-pen or other stock functionality.
Thanks to those of you who helped root...
hmm, doesn't seem to work for me. The prompt in the app to reboot doesn't do anything.
Can we see some screen caps?
just do it manually it doesnt cause boot loops. You can change it to any DPI you want.
Use root explorer
navigate to "System/Build props"
Hold down "build props"
choose "open with"
then choose "text editor"
scroll down a few lines look for "ro.sf.lcd_density=320"
Change the 320 to whatever you want, I use 240.
click "save and exit",
reboot your device,
profit.
Why would you want to change it if it makes stuff look bad?
you can also edit the build.prop via rom toolbox really easily and the results are attached. 240dpi is first 320dpi is second.
Your Samsung keyboard will also crash at 240dpi but you can replace it with this one made by bala_gamer http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1501015&d=1353535434

I haven't done it yet but a lower dpi would be great on this phone. It would let you take more advantage of such a large screen real estate.

It doesn't really break anything from what I've noticed, just makes a few things appear a bit differently, but still fully functional. It's worth a shot if you're interested in doing it, and you can always change back if you find it unmanagable. Personally, a per app dpi would be ideal, because you don't always prefer every app to be at 240 dpi. But I really like it, especially with the on screen nav buttons, which even those make some apps SLIGHTLY off, but still plenty usable, and worth the small inconvenience. To each their own though.

The white line is probably the miui battery bar, see if its on in settings> custom settings> battery bar settings. As far as the dpi, just use a root explorer to go into system>Apps>build.prop, then long press build.prop and open in text editor and change the line with "screen/lcd density" and change the value to 240(or whatever you want). Hit menu and save/exit then reboot. You are correct that you lose the edit function in multi windows, but you can always change back to edit your apps, then switch back. The change only takes 10 seconds.

Why you would want to is easy. Ever used a tablet and seen tablet mode on apps? Stock DPI prevents apps from entering tablet mode and that was one feature I was looking very forward to with such a big screen.

I couldn't get that to work either. I think it ma be a touchwiz conflict.
Just experienced my 2nd screen/sleep of death today, and unfortunately I'm thinking it's from the dpi. Going to change and will report back if I discover otherwise. I'll also leave my nav bar on, just to eliminate that variable. Bummer...I really hope we can incorporate a per app dpi on this phone at some point, maybe paranoid android(as long as it's reasonably compatible with the s-pen).
I also noticed my "android system" under battery was going through the roof. It was going over the screen %, but now that I changed the dpi back, it's already back under.

Future ROM feature wishlist

So I know that the devs are hard at work on getting us all kinds of CM, AOSP, and/or AOKP goodness, but I thought maybe if any of the devs are looking for some features to add it might be nice to have a thread they can refer to with everyones "wants" once the "needs" are met.
I'll start it off with a request to add support for BLN (back light notification) to an upcoming kernel. This, combined with the option to put the navigation bar on while dissabling the HW keys would be a great feature IMHO. Not to mention our stock notification LED pretty much sucks a big one.
ROM feature requests
Flashlight in notification drawer quick settings
More options in the shutdown menu (Boot to recovery, etc)
Get rid of the idiotic audio policy of volume reduction when plugging in headphones
Allow dialer rotation
The option to see the standard swipe lock screen before the secure lock.
True music controls on the lock screen
Better control of status bar icons (center clock, hide icons, change colors of icons, etc)
The ability to link the notification volume with the ringer volume
Volume rocker music controls
Universal Qslide
Kernel feature requests
BLN
Enable audio through USB for devices like the Infuse Car Dock (I think this is a kernel issue, if not let me know and I'll put it with the ROM stuff)
I didn't see a similar thread on here, so if there is, kindly point me to it and a mod can delete this one. And if BLN support already exists in Sk8's kernel tell me that too, ha ha.
I haven't looked into the ROMs because I'm liking stock, but a request I do have for when I do decide to flash is to have a flashlight if it hasn't been incorporated into the ROMs out now. There's a lot of times where I need to look for something and don't feel like turning on my light switch. Would be a nice thing to be implemented if it hasn't been done and can be done.

I don't know if this is what you have in mind, but I use TeslaLED: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.flashlight&feature.. It has a widget you can add to the homescreen for a quick on off, as well as some other features. I actually have it as one of my lock screen apps. I wish there was a way to have it turn on when opened from the lockscreen, but it's only one extra tap.

PS: TeslaLED is only 512K, whereas Tiny Flashlight is anything but at 1.5M

My biggest things are center clock, ability to hide things on status bar, and a flashlight toggle. The Base has done pretty well but I would love a flashlight toggle in my quick settings in my notification drawer. The swipe for flashlight thing was so touchy that I disable it.
Also, I love the theme chooser app and ability to have easy themes for my ROMs like in CM10 and AOKP
EDIT: also the ability to boot straight into download and recovery mode like in certain other ROMs using the power button.

The Base ROM does have a flashlight built in, you can activate it in the notification drawer options.
I was using Tesla until I found this.
Though I do wish it was in the Quick Settings too.
I would also love native reboot options.
And lastly, I would love the ability to link the notification volume with the ringer volume.
I know. The swipe thing only works half the time and half of that half, I end up with The Base force closes

Really, it actually works quite well for me.
Haven't had a base fc yet... you may want to reinstall and try again.

I had actually forgot about this feature. I just tried it again and sometimes it takes three or four swipes to turn on. Might be user error though.
Swipe for torch works perfect for me.
Reboot options would be nice.
Volume Button Music controls would be nicer.
I actually came up with a wish while looking at the android dev section.
It doesn't actually have to do with the rom itself, but I'm hoping that as things become further developed to not only have a Changelog but to have a what's working list/what's not working list or just the latter.
I see a lot of threads gets bogged down with DOES THIS WORK? IS THIS INCLUDED?
Granted there's a group of people out there that don't read and just flash, but it could be helpful for another group of people that compare and contrast roms (like myself) before flashing.
Anyone else agree?

That makes sense to me. I wonder if xda could get a ROM form together so all the devs can include all the same info in their ROM's thread's OP. I don't know how practical that would be, but it would be nice to have some standardization.

That is a pretty cool idea.
But from what I've seen, most ROM posts actually follow a pretty basic design.
We seem to be the odd ones out.

Tips on making SGH-i527 snappy

Aside from turning off animation, is there anything else that can be done to improve UI performance(snap) on this unit?
I heard and read somewhere if you use nova launcher to change the icons (UI) instead of using the touchwiz (UI) ones it will be quite a bit faster i heard, i have not tried it myself yet .

As per your recommendation, I downloaded and installed Nova launcher.
As it turns out, I liked it so much that I bought the Prime version.
Excellent util.
If you have Nova and take out 'icon labels' it even makes it snappier, not for some people but it does help even further. I really like touchwiz but the lag is awful.
Nice to hear that I am going to have to try it also then and see it for myself..enjoy it forsure as it suppose to make the mega more snappier.

My particular unit is from Bell mobility.
Any idea what would be considered bloatware on those units?
If you don't use it... it is bloatware
A good practice is to disable or hide as many apps as possible, and if you have to enable them or un-hide them... keep them.
bloatware for some = essential utility for others.
I love using my phone as an IR remote when my significant lady has the real remote in her hand... take back the power!

Good point. I posted a list of all the stuff I disabled in the benchmark thread. Ive since disabled even more. Hiding the apps does nothing to free up resources. These is a ton of apps that would really never get used.
True... hiding apps does nothing for performance... but hiding is sometimes a "better" option for the squeamish.
I use the same idea for possessions... put things in storage... if you dont use them after X amount of days/weeks/months then "delete" them.
out of sight, out of use, off of phone soon after
How do we turn off the animations? ??

Go into developer options and set the animations to "0"..
If you don't see the developer options, then you need to go into SETTINGS - MORE - ABOUT DEVICE and tap the build number a bunch of times and you'll get a message that developer options have been enabled.

I have 3 different lines of <animations> options..
all 3 were set at 1x...
Should I turn them ALL off to ZERO???
thanks.....

That will turn off all animations. Definately be a smidge smoother.

Tip: your camera is upgradeable!

Hey folks... I wanted to toss this out there because I've had a number of friends who got S5's recently and after playing with it a bit didn't realize this... the stock camera app is in a sense upgradeable by downloading new filters and shooting modes. Simply open the app, bring up the list of filters or shooting modes and scroll to the end, where you'll find a Download button. It'll bring you to a list of add-ons in the Samsung app store where you can grab what you want (most free, some not).
I think Samsung largely just took out stuff that was in there on the S3/S4 and made them add-ons, but I'm totally cool with that, and there may be a few new and interesting things too.
Anyway, now you know... and knowing's half the battle
Yay more filters, thanks but I'll stick to Vsco Cam, filters are flexible and u can make your own and not lose resolution. ..

Currently I'm awaiting a camera app duel article that then lists the best app depending on model of phone and other factors.
That said, I really like the Samsung camera application and find that the flexibility to add additional filters without going third-party is a nice feature.
Strange, for whatever reason, I only show 4 additional modes being available when I check for new modes (via the same Download link within the camera app). Any suggestions?

Because that's all there are. In another thread, someone asked about Macro. The auto mode seems to focus pretty darn close. I was maybe three inches away from or less and the focus was right on.

Thanks for confirming my original suspicions. When I had read the OP, it sounded as though additional filters/modes (beyond the current 4) were already available, but that I had somehow blocked them by disabling so many unneeded applications in an attempt to fight bloat.
Yeah, I did notice that the macro capabilities had improved a touch from the S4. This was a pleasant surprise, considering I like to play around with taking neat macro/detail shots of stuff. With the few extra megapixels and the selective focus, it's even better.
While using the camera If you click on settings and click effects, it gives you the option to download more effects as well. Scroll through the effects to the bottom and there will be a download icon. A few of them though cost $1

Sho'nuff. Didn't even scroll that far through the effects to see the Download link. Thanks!
