[Q] Stolen phone - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone (HTC Desire) was stolen yesterday. I had uninstalled every phone-tracking app due to lack of internal storage, and am thus unable to track my phone through conventional means. Will I be able to do anything with my IMEI number other than give it to the mobile carrier and have it block my phone?
Many thanks,
jezza_0410

Go to the Android market on a PC, try to install an app call Plan B. It will force install without one having to do anything on the phone.
If your phone is still on it will turn on the GPS and start sending out locations

Your carrier or the police can track the phone, but they won't use resources on it since it's only a stolen phone. If it had been a much serious case they could do it, but it won't happen, so it's lost.

Won't work. The phone has to be on the same wifi network as the computer.

I think that's not true
After you install it, Plan B will start locating your phone using cell towers and GPS. On some phones, Plan B can switch GPS on automatically. Your location will keep updating for 10 minutes, and you will get an email each time it is located, whether the phone is moving or standing still. You can start the process again by texting “locate” to your number from any other phone. In order to locate your phone, we send you a text via SMS, so standard message rates apply.

How To Tether..

I know I can turn on the native wife tethering app on the phone but that's the one where you have to pay for a "tethering" plan. Is there a way right now to wireless tether for free like I used to on my custom Rom'd captivate?

Easiest way to tether your wife is to go buy some rope. Don't even need your GS2 to do it!
If you mean WiFi tethering - you need to remove or freeze TetherManager.apk. Actually it may be TetherManager2.apk on the GS2. There might be other bigbrotherware watching though... TetherManager is the big obvious one that blocks tethering if your plan isn't provisioned, but there might be something else that spies.
Bumping this up. When I attempted to turn on hotspot it sat for a second, then said "error" When I thought about it, I remember reading somewhere that you have to modify something. I see in the above post some referrence to this. can someone confirm/walk me through how to do this? Thanks!
Check out the frequently asked questions thread, it is at the top of this forum. Look at the first post near the bottom of it and it tells you how to tether.

Here is another thread that asks the same question you do, it is a couple pages long already:

You have to root your phone to use any kinds of unauthorized tethering. After that, you can use TitaniumBackup to remove TetheringManager app. With it removed, you can use the built-in wi-fi or USB tethering freely .... that is until AT&T sends you a cease and desist warning message.
I know DG's and GTG's rom have free tethering enabled in them. Not sure about CM7 but I assume they do as well.

Yup, but there seem to be certain data usage patterns (exact ones unknown) that are likely to trigger AT&T's tether detection.
PC tetherers are getting nailed right and left. Android tablet tetherers seem to be doing OK so far.

Phone is rooted and running Cyan. I installed TitaniumBackup and can't for the life of me find anything that says tetheringmanager. I just confirmed by reading through the list again and the word tethering doesn't show up at all. Uless I'm looking in the wrong place. I'm looking at the backup/restore tab. I know if I hold press on an item, a bunch of options including "Force remove app" is an option. What am I missing?

I did discover the batch area where you can freeze apps etc... but again, when i tell it to run, no tetheringmanager is visible.

1. Get an app called "Root Explorer" from the Market.
2. Browse to "System\App".
3. Be sure to select "Mount R/W" at top of list.
4. Scroll through list to "TetheringManager2.apk" and long-press it to get pop up menu options.
5. choose "Delete" or "Move" to remove or relocate it.
6. That's it...you're done.

I guess you're running CM7.1 ROM, not the stock ROM. There is no need to remove tethering Manager running any custom ROMs (why would any custom ROM limit your access to tethering?).
My instruction only applies to stock ROMs.

That's a different can of worms. I was merely stating that you CAN tether without using the ATT app, thanks to you and the other devs.

The wi-fi hotspot and USB tethering app are standard featurs of Android, not from AT&T. AT&T, and other carriers, inserted their middle man called Tethering Manager to prevent you from tethering without pay the ransom. So, no you're never using AT&T app to tethering. Custom ROMs should already removed those middle ware and return you to pure Android tethering feature.

This is correct. I'm running 7.1. Any idea then why as soon as I go into settings>Wireless & Networks>Tethering & Portable Hotspot and check the Portable WiFi hotspot, it says "turning on", runs for a second then says "Error" underneath.

Probably a driver or framework problem...
use adb to grab a logcat and dmesg of the error. If you're on Windows, Droid Explorer can help you with this.

You will have to get in contact with CM7.1 team. It sounds like a bug to me. CM7 has nothing in common with AT&T ROM from what I understand.
Cm7.1 has been pulled as stable. This was one of the issues.

if you're running CyanogenMod then you don't need to remove Tethering Manager. Teatheringmanager is installed on stock ROMs put there by AT&T. You should be able to tether with CM7.. however you still have to watch the AT&T Police!

[Q] Network connectivity anomaly?

I'm not exactly sure what's going on here as it just started happening today when I powered on my tablet and am just too worn out from the weekend to troubleshoot it tonight. But when I powered on, the wifi connects, IP address assigned, all seems well within the Force. I open the browser and am able to go where I'd like- as expected. But any other app can not connect. Twitter, Google+, Gmail (any google tool really), Skype, Pandora, and the Market are all unable to connect.
Anyone have guidance or suggestions on where to start looking here? I will be tearing into this as a project this week but if it's something easy, please help me understand.
Same here.
I show myself connected to WiFi. SpeedTest.net app connects and is showing normal ping/download/upload speeds.
I can use the stock browser to surf.
But...
No connectivity within the Market, Dropbox, Gmail, GroupMe, Facebook, etc.
It was working fine, and then just stopped.

The most likely cause for this problem is an incorrect system date and time. If the battery drains out, the onboard clock gets reset to Jan 1 2009 GMT and then you'll have this issue until the correct time is fetched from the network.
The next time this happens, just check and correct the system date and time.
Thanks for the reply - never would have realized that was the problem. Good to know for when it happens again!

[Q] Vibrant SHG-T959, installed CM10, no mobile data?

So I have a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant SGH-T959, I carefully researched and read how to safely upgrade to a custom OS, so I installed CM10 (I may switch to Helly Bean). Upon booting up my phone for the first time I was greeted with the screen to sync my Google account, but first I needed to choose a network. Only problem, it only gave Wifi as an option, and it didn't automatically connect to my data plan.
Upon digging through the settings, I found a list of network operators, so I selected T-Mobile. I then realized that was for text/calls, so I looked at my list of APN's, which was empty.
Like an idiot, I didn't back up any info, let alone my network settings, before I flashed CM10. Is there a way that I can regain access to my mobile internet? Or is this a hardware compatibility issue?
My experience with flashing / editing / general jailbreaking type actions is... in its infancy, so if you would be so kind as to spell it out for me, or to point me to a link that explains it for newcomers, that'd be great!
Well all you have to do is enter the proper APN for T-Mobile. Try this: http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1976
If there are further issues you can ODIN back to stock.

Data working, play store initializes downloads, won't download
I have cm10 installed on my Vibrant sgh-t959, and I am trying to install all my apps synced with my google account, but it doesn't want to work on my data connection. I can browse the internet and use online services just fine, but it doesn't want to download in the play store? Works on wifi.

Clear your Play Store data, reboot your phone. Try again.

Can't do wifi data and voice on my DNA.. Update. It' bluetooth.

After some experimentation I narrowed this down to a conflict with Bluetooth headset use and wifi data on my DNA. It's not related to the channel wifi is using as I've changed the channel my router was using. The data connection stops about 20 seconds into a call comes back as soon as the headset is turned off. Weird. I'm going to call HTC tomorrow to see if this is a problem with my device or if it's a problem with the DNA.
If anyone can try this on their device it would be helpful to know if they have the same issue.
"While I'm on a call I cannot browse on my wifi connection. For the first minute or so of a call I can browse but then I can't connect to sites until after I disconnect from the call. As soon as I disconnect from the call I get the data back and all is well. I have restarted the phone and tried again and have the same problem. I know about the issue of not doing voice and data when on 3g on the DNA, but can't imagine that I should not be able to have a wifi data working while on a call. A very small page like the Google main page will connect, but a larger page will not. I got the DNA as a replacement for my Rezound and was aware that it would not do voice and data over 3G but this problem with wifi browsing when on a call has to be an anomaly. Right?
BTW, I'm stock (unlock no root or ROM) and have taken the OTA.
Anyone have this issue or some advice on what the problem might be?"
Your best bet might be to backup your current Stock setup and flash a rom with a custom kernel such as Viper to see if it makes a difference.
(If you're unlocked as the post suggests)
I have only had to use Google Maps / Search in-call a few times when I had my Rezound so I can't really say anything in particular.
if appears to say not unlocked rooted or have a custom rom which suggests your sol until either htc sends a ota fix or the devs can get the new ota unlocked

[Q] No SMS while on WiFi??

Please tell me I'm not the only one with this issue!
For the past three weeks, I can't send/receive texts or even calls sometimes while WiFi is turned on. However, when I'm out and not connected to WiFi, there is no issue. I've tried calling T-Mobile but all they wanted to do was factory reset my phone. When I DO get phone calls, the other people seem as though they are breaking up and I can't understand them AT ALL. And when I do manage to send texts, they take forever to reach their destinations.
Anyone else experiencing this?

thanks for the answer! I used to have adblockplus but I uninstalleunit and did a factory reset and the problem still persists. I tried the other solution also and it worked for a good five minutes and now back to square one...
It's getting really annoying because I feel as though TMobile didn't really know what was going on either.

well since last night my daughters phone would receive phone calls but she couldn't call out everything else was working call t-mobile again had phone off had them re send signal to sim. working now but this is what bothers me now he said that it seems from time to time the sim card would disconnect from the phone and we should get in the habit of turning the phone off and then back on to fix this issue.i wouldn't tell a customer that just bought the phone 2 month ago that kind of respond especially when you are buying a $600.00+ for this phone.
What type of WiFi do you use?
I use WiFi calling on mine frequently and don't have any problems.
For the sms, are you using hangouts for texting?

Just your average home WiFi connection if that's what you're asking.. I saw that WiFi calling was causing the problem for some people so it's been turned off on my phone for a while.
And I used to use hangouts but I switched back to regular messaging.... Then a few weeks later, this problem!

Some people reported same type of issues when they had"smart network switch" on. Disable that if it's on and see if that fixes the problem.
