Android os battery drain? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Android os is slowly eating my battery.
Is this happening to anyone else?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App

Yup. It's taking 50% drain of all other services on my phone

Android os is near or at ths top of the list of battery consumption on my phone most of the time. But I'm not to concerned about it because I'm getting excellent battery life on this phone so far. It exceeded 3.5 hours of display on time before I had to recharge the battery the first time.
I wouldn't get too excited about battery stats until you have had your phone for 4 or 5 days and get settled into normal use and have completed a half dozen our so recharge cycles because the battery stats will not be very accurate until then.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App

Yeah im getting good battery life so far too but if it didnt have this issue we would be getting excellent battery life. In six hours of very little use its sucked down 21% and ran for over 30 minutes.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App

Android OS is at 47% for me.
I'm wondering if it's some sort of reporting bug, because I'm still getting excellent battery life. With debloating to kill all the background services and some minor power management tweaks in the kernel, it's doing significantly better than Serendipity VII did on the Infuse, which I didn't think is possible.
Usually at my desk in weak signal, Cell Standby is #1 and Phone Idle is #2 on the Infuse. They're #2 and #3 respectively for me.
I wonder if it's a dual-core reporting bug, because I've NEVER seen it over 50%, and if you ignore it, the remaining items in battery usage are consistent with what I'd expect to see for a device in the conditions I'm putting it in and the battery life I'm getting. It may be that for every item that wakes up one CPU core, it gets counted, and Android OS gets counted equally on the other CPU core.

This is the same problem that the Sprint's version faced. There's a few long threads about it over in their section.
When I had the Sprint version, my AOS was random after each nightly charge. It would be really high one day, then really low the next. I've noticed that I get the best battery life when AOS is 2x%.
This is the first day after a full charge for my at&t version and AOS is around 2x%. 9h on battery and I'm at 70% with little - moderate use.

I've been unplugged for 13.5 hours and I'm still at 74%. Auto brightness ON, 1hr 20 min display time. My Android OS is 18%. Thats way better battery life than I was getting with my Captivate. I'm stock right now(no root, kernel changes for now )

I was at 88% after 9 hours on my desk - that's pretty good considering the weak-signal conditions at my desk.

There is a similar situation with my LG Thrill. I haven't really monitored the battery usage on my SGS2 yet, but I'm thinking that you may be correct in questioning the dual-core issue. My only hesitation in saying that is that I don't have the same issue on my Atrix and it, too, has a dual core.
Android OS is currently at 21% for me(n my (SGS2), but I'm using my Atrix as my primary phone at the moment. So, it isn't being used excessively.

Probably not a universal bug with dual-core, but some firmwares may not handle it properly.

I have this same 'bug' on my HTC inspire and it has remained through about 10 different rom flashes.

I have been all over this phone today playing games, downloading and installing apps and check this out

Up time has been a little over 24 hours. On this charge, about 10 hours and 50% percent battery life left.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App

Seems like the percentage drops the more other things use battery.
I'm not worried about the percentage for now, considering how little drain I was actually experiencing.

Android os is a problem. Unplugged for two hours it ran for 20 minutes and brought me to 85%. Had to reboot

Anyone else getting -crazy- good battery life?

I don't heavily use my phone, maybe medium usage. However, I usually get over 20 hours of battery life every day, if I don't charge when I hit 20%.

Is this... Normal, or is this... Accurate? I haven't timed the actual hours, only went on the time given by the battery usage app. I -have- calibrated the battery correctly after flashing to CM7.1 nightly (not after each flash, just the first flash).
My old phone (3GS) had about 6-7 hours less, I'm very impressed.
I'm experiencing similar battery life ever since installing Cognition + Entropy and using battery calibration. The battery died fairly quick when stock though.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
I admit my usage is pretty light, but 14h to 60% is poor for my usage patterns.
However there seems to be a lot of awake/screen-on time for you...
As to battery calibration - doesn't do anything on our phones except possibly make the fuel gauge COMPLETELY wack out, triggering the fuel_alert wakelock bug. (next kernel will fix that bug though - not the root cause of the fuel gauge wacking out but at least the perma-wakelock it causes.)
I'm stock and getting 18 hours of battery, 5.5 hours of screen on time. This its with live wallpapers, Facebook widgets, etc.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
I'm on CM7.1 nightlies. They're amazing. I have tasker running, turnning off wifi and bluetooth and 3G/HSPA+ when not in use. But seeing that people are getting similar or better battery usage is crazy. I can't believe it to be honest. When my 3GS was brand new it didn't get close to this.
Very impressed overall.
I'm lucky to get 2 hours of screen time...
Word this phone rocks.

2hr phone call, 5 hours of local mp3 and another 2 of Pandora on 3G, and some gaming and I'm at 41%. My N1 with CM7 would have died long ago.
i am getting horrible battery life if the average is 14 hours of moderate use... eitehr that or i am a heavy user and dont realize it
Hi, I'm new to XDA...
I have the i777.
How can so many hours of battery life be achieved? I have stock everything. Does CM7 really make the batter life last much longer?
I was getting terrible battery life using the stock ATT build but since switching to CM7 its been a lot better. Sitting at 13 hrs with 26% left. I am trying to figure out why the Android system for me seems to run really high (70% or more). I have sync turned off, no GPS or BT and only use Wifi when needed. I will say that looking at CPU Spy since moving to CM7 my phone is getting into more Deep Sleep which is good. I notice that Google Maps runs a lot as well as the NFC service. Its confusing because NFC isn't even enabled on the phone? Any ideas to lower Android OS would be appreciated.

Those are the correct stats.
One of the main contributions CM7 has to battery life is plain and simple debloating.
For those that have unexplained drain issues, the following technique is useful:
Install CPUSpy
Get ADB up and running on your PC - for Windows users, Droid Explorer is usually the quickest route
Charge your phone, take it off the charger, reboot (this resets all stats)
Reset CPU timers in CPUSpy (menu->reset timers) - they're often bogus on boot
Let the phone sit for a few hours
Check CPUSpy for deep sleep percentages - when a phone is idle in moderate signal, it should usually be 90-95%. On wifi you can potentially hit 96-97%.
If the deep sleep percentage is very low, collect data using ADB:
Code:
adb shell cat /proc/wakelocks > wakelocks.txt
Post wakelocks.txt here for analysis.
I got JuiceDefenderUlt and I actually think it's well worth the $. I used it heavily today during for about 5 hours and it didn't dip below 80%, very suprising when bfore JDU it would be at 50-60%. I think I can probably go 2 days without a charge and it might survive.
Everyone 's definition of "medium" or "high" usage is different. Need to post some display numbers.
I think my best one was 95% battery to below 5%, 4 hours and 30 minutes of screen on time, 16 hours on battery.

How much screen on time did you have? how long has it been since you flashed your current set up?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA App
sorry forgot that shot....i rooted and flashed on either Sunday or Monday this week.....now i do use bluetooth for work so i'm thinking that kills the battery big time....
That is kind of good battery life considering you got almost four hours of screen on time. If your really worried then you should get one of the 3500 mah batteries. I have this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21589969. This battery gets me through at least a day and a half of heavy usage, and it works great for the price.
yeah i wasn't sure...i always keep reading about people getting 1.5-2 days on a battery...it's a new toy so hopefully when the excitement wears off that screen won't be on so much
That's exactly what will happen. You have new phone syndrome. I did too, when I first got my Galaxy S2. Except that I, unlike you, was running stock unrooted, and my battery life was more like 8 hours. I'm now running stock rooted with Entropy's kernel, plus I don't use my phone as much, and I get between 15 and 20 hours.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
Yeah...with almost 4 hours screen on, and mostly on cell data (assumption based on your 2.x hours of wifi on) that isn't too horrible. Your total awake time is about an hour more than screen on, so assuming you had phone calls, music playing, or some other screen off background task to account for some of that, you're doing pretty good...

LOL so I'm guessing the best way to really conserve battery is to keep the screen off. Just outta curiousity (which I will test tonight after full charge) what is an acceptable drop rate when phone is fully asleep for say 8 hours or so. Like what 1-2% an hour?

2%/hour idle drain I consider bad - that's why I haven't released a kernel since 1/2/2012 - I have a power management regression that pushes drain to a bit over 2%/hour when connected to wifi.
I strive for 0.5%/hour and get very close to that frequently when in a good signal area. In a weak signal area (like at my desk at work), it's around 1%/hour.
4.5%/hour or so is the idle drain you'll get if the phone is unable to enter deep sleep.

does the samsung galaxy s3 have signal and battery issues ?

hi everyone this is my first thread and i am glad to be here
i have a question
i am thinking of buying the samsung galaxy s3 but i read that some people are complaining about the signal and the battery and i wanted to know is an issue in the carrier or from the phone itself ? and is it a problem on all of the samsung galaxy s3 phones ?
Well this S3 is the smartphone with the longest battery life I ever got.
I would say it is twice the nexus one or LG X2 I had before and 4 times my older Basic Galaxy.
Reception is very good and Wifi is also the best I have ever seen.
Battery life is fantastic and signal strength is also fantastic (both better than any other android phone I've ever owned). I've found wifi strength can be a bit lacking but not to the point where it becomes a problem.
Same as above, no signal or battery issues. Battery is very long-lasting.
Only issue I've had so far was a wakelock keeping the phone awake all night and draining it, but that can happen on any device.
Good reception and battery life. Gotta be happy with 6 hours screen time.

Believe me after coming from a LG optimus 3D i would say the battery life is awesome. LG optimus 3d battery life with heavy usage 3 hours no usage 5. S3 with heavy usage 15 hours or more, no usage i have no idea last time i left it on idle to check it was almost 2 days..
That is comparing a dual core to a quad core phone the battery is simply amazing and the signal hasn't dropped for me at all it is excellent..
I'm having battery issues. Cell standby seems to use a crap load of battery for seemingly no reason.
This pic is just over night. I went to bed with 100% battery and woke up with these battery stats:
Battery life is not a issue in this mobile..its awesome..even signal strength is also fine so till now no probs at all ..
So I'm having major battery issues. After 2 hours of light use my battery is down to 84%. Tried to post screen shots of the battery usage but can't upload .png file. Basically the android system is consuming almost 90% of the battery. After 4 hours it is almost half dead and by 8 hours less than 20% left. Very frustrating. Power saving mode is on.
Ok so i was able to attach an image showing a screenshot I took yesterday showing the terrible battery life.

My problem exactly. Cell standby is giving my battery a hard time. On Voodafone now.
IMO High Cell standby power drains suggests your signal is weak?? chaning your wireless network settings may help Eg: 4G on or off, roaming etc. High Android system drains suggest unnecessary systems always running. I would try turning off any unused apps, GPS, etc & lowering display brightness. I think I'm going to get this phone tomorrow.

Battery Woes

Is anyone else finding it extremely difficult to get through the day without struggling to keep your SIII alive? I thought the battery life was supposed to be superior to its predecessors? I'm a first time Android user but I did not think I would have to lower my brightness all the way and constantly monitor my devices battery life.
do you have some dumbass apps draining your battery?
i found my culprit and it's Friendcaster without even turn the notification on
get Badass battery monitor to find it or just use the one in setting
I'm finding the battery life is great, and lasts a whole day with no problems
It really depends on what do on your phone.
Try posting a screenshot of your battery stats. Android has an inbuilt monitor with each app and its usage being displayed. Easy method to spot a drain.
I just downloaded that in addition to my other app but there doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary that seems to be killing my battery. Most of it is coming from my screen but I keep at it 25% brightness the whole time. Super odd
I usually get around 16 hours of standby and at least 4 hours or more of screen time.
You should try Watchdog Task Manager. It will be able to tell you if an app is running and using more processes than it should. Also I've never used badass battery stats, but better battery stats will tell you if anything is holding a wakelock. It is free for XDA members so you don't have to buy it on the market. Just search for it

Maybe I'm just freaking out about the whole battery situation? I just expected it to be a lot longer and a lot better. I constantly worry if I'll be able to make past 10PM when I start my day at 7AM.

I'm getting huge drain from Cell Standby.
It'll lose 30% overnight. I keep checking for a software update. It's got to be the modem.
I'm holding off on rooting and custom ROMS until I know for sure this is fixable in firmware.
My phone's on LE6 and is from Thailand.
I see that you have poor signal reception
maybe that's why
last time I went underground, just 5 mins of standby it took away 10% of my battery
when it searches for signal it drains a lot
you could also try to disable auto search for network
go to setting>more settings > network operators and select it manually

[Q] Samsung galaxy s3 battery

Im new to this forum thing so sorry if i do/type something wrong. Anyway, i got my gs3 few months ago, and the battery life lasts a day, when i had iphone 3g it lasted like 3 days without charging, so i wanna know if this is normal with everyone or i have to fix it. Yes its rooted with a costume rom.
How often do you use it? Which CPU governor are you using? Make sure it can deep sleep, because if it doesn't it will drain very quickly.
Deep sleep? First I'm hearing about that. Could I set that myself in the paranoid kangdroid ROM
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Deep sleep is a built-in feature that reduces power consumption when you're not using the phone. There are some applications that will keep your phone awake (known as a a wakelock) even when the phone's screen is off. To find out more, get CPU Spy and Wakelock Detector. The former will show you how long your CPU is in each frequency and deep sleep, if at all. The latter will scan for apps that are keeping your phone awake when it should be sleeping.
How much screen on time and other use does it get?
I get 3-4 hours of screen on time before I charge and that's a typical day for me. The newer and more powerful hardware is going to use more battery in general, too - compared to an older phone with much weaker hardware.

If your phone lasts a full day, that's a miracle by today's standards. My S3 i9300 lasts about a full day also, with ~2 hours of screen time at most. Unless you have a Motorola Razr Maxx (3300 mAh battery) or a Note 2, you're probably not going to get over a day of battery life on any phone with anything over minimal usage. Also, don't let your battery die completely; don't go lower than around 20-25%. If you repeatedly do, your battery will overall hold less of a charge.
I suggest also that you turn on Power Saver if you're not gaming. Go into Settings -> Power Saver and disable the screen power savings (it limits the frame rate). This basically keeps the phone from going above 1 GHz (barely noticeable in terms of speed, but big battery savings).
Since you use a custom ROM, try messing with the min/max frequencies of your phone. My Samsung Galaxy SII has pretty good battery life; in this screenshot it's about 2 hours of screen time - 30 minutes of internet data, 30 minutes of music and the rest is miscellaneous gaming, videos, arranging apps etc. Oh yes, and a few phone calls, of course.

Click "Screen" to show for how long the screen was actually on. Overall that's good battery life though. Do you actually notice an improvement?

screen is on 2 hours and 27 mins. if i didnt use power saving the battery would probably be 15%.

That's amazing. Seriously. 2.5 hrs and 54% left. That's nuts!

Battery life heavily depends on the brightness. Mine is at about 60% fixed brightness, and in the screenshot it was at 1 hour 52 minutes of screen time.
lol i thought that battery life was bad.. thx

Don't expect too much from today's fancy smartphones. They are mostly form over function, and would rather have a slim body and unnecessarily fast internals rather than good battery life.
