[Q] NFC Reader App - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Is there a NFC reader app that works on the SGS II? Are there any NFC settings?
Best,
-- Thomas

My Nexus S had NFC built into the battery door, though it appears that my SGS II has no NFC chip visible...unless it's hidden in the main body of the phone some where.

The engadget review said its in the battery itself.

Its not there that I know of so no app will work.

Look at the battery itself and it is listed on there. Like the other poster said it is in the battery.

So there is no official word on NFC yet?

I hear it does based upon some articles I read dated in late September. 2.3.7 is supposed to have Google wallet. I am curious if anyone can verify it on this variant.

Someone try installing this on top of the cm7 beta http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286315

Further evidence of it being in the battery - four contacts in ours instead of three for the Infuse. (How many does the I9100 have?)

AT&T is probably waiting for its ISIS deal to go through before enabling NFC on the GSII.

I wonder if the FM tuner is built into the battery too...

Stock kernel has NFC support compiled in but no FM tuner support. Trying to enable FM in the kernel results in the driver failing to initialize.
Don't know the state of NFC in userland. I wish I could get an APK for some app to test with. Market right now considers our device as lacking NFC.

The official AT&T I777 user manual states that the NFC hardware is present but currently disabled.

AT&T manual?

[Q] why does the Captivate have Gingerbread working GPS and we don't?

This isn't meant to be a whine post, I'm just asking so I can better understand the Galaxy S series.
The Captivate is part of the Galaxy S family, why did Samsung release working Gingerbread with GPS but the Vibrant gets nothing? Isn't it the same hardware, just different form?
the captivate has a working gps because of the way samsung uses the software to call gps on the i9k compared to how the vibrant uses software calls to the gps.
The vibrant is different enough to where i9k stuff doesn't work, but the captivate works in the same way.
(hope fully the way i worded things isn't to confusing).

Hm interesting. So when coding for each separate Galaxy S device do they start with the same base for each and then just branch off that and modify it however the carrier has specified? Or would each be built from scratch individually? It kind of seems like each would be made separately if calls to the gps are used differently on hardware that's very similar.
cool, thanks for the explanation geoffcorey, i understand it perfectly now.

As of JVH, one of the latest GB builds, there is very little difference.
Example. When I first started porting the Simply Galaxy/Honey series we were working with Froyo(2.2.1) and a lot had to be changed out or fixed, GPS, wifi, data, key mapping plus more. Because it was still Froyo based a lot of the code was still the same as ours so we could simply replace the GPS files and others and it worked. Gingerbread calls GPS completely different so we can't just slide our files in. The good thing though is that, I believe, Samsung is moving to a more universal build. On GB wifi is the same, actually almost everything. The only thing needed to port GB was a minor change to key mapping and headset and everything works with the exception of GPS.
Now as far as that goes the GPS chips are different and require different drivers in order to work. At least that's my understanding of the GPS. We Vibrant owners may have gotten the shaft when it came to GPS.

Thanks for the info explodingboy70.
Ha, and yeah, I think we knew we had the shaft from the get go... (Entire Vibrant crap GPS debacle)
Welcome to T-mobile!! Customer service is fantastic but product service/development is garbage. But look at it this way; soon enough we'll have crappy customer service and better products, lmao.
That is one good question I was thinking of the same thing.
Thanks Guys

So we Vibrant GPS is not working with Gingerbread at all??

GPS works in several of our Ginger roms. It can just be kind of sketchy at times.

[Q] Proper GPS hardware diagnostic

Here's the story:
Had a vibrant, put Axura (Axura 205 Vibrant) on it. Worked great for many many months, until I broke the screen. I tried to replace it but that's another story.
Fast forward to now, I have a new Vibrant, with the same ROM on it, (flashed from stock).
I have tried 6 or 7 different ROMS of various release (Froyo/GB), but the GPS never shows satellites. I have done the access LBSTest fix as suggested elsewhere in the forums, but still not seeing satellites.
On my old phone this specific ROM (Axura) worked great. Same ROM, another phone, doesn't work.
It feels like the gps hardware is bad (I bought the phone used) but my business partner's phone does the exact same thing.
ANY diagnostic steps or outline would be great! I don't know how to determine if the GPS hardware is functioning properly or not. A link, list or other from someone who has dealt with this before would be a wonderful help.
THANKS!
(The only odd thing I have noticed is the stock rom won't connect to any cellular networks. Putting Axura (or any ROM) corrects that issue.)
EDIT: I should note that enabling "Use wireless networks" allows some data to be used, but I assume this is based off of hardware mac addresses of the wireless routers and google's location database rather than actual satellite data
I should also note the manufacture date is 10.10 and the current modem is JK2.
I have been researching various fixes (in spite of the anomaly stated above) and it seems the hardware soldering fix only relates to pre 10.10 and suggests a modem higher than JI6.
I am tempted to try some other ROMs but have exhausted my attempts and feel maybe this isn't something I can fix anymore. Help still appreciated.
sounds like you'll need to open it and do the HW mod for the GPS antenna contacts to be firm together, I used a piece of shaped plastic to keep the tab in an elevated position so it wouldn't lose tension after its snapped back. then DL heathens GB GPS fix , it works awesome for me, best GPS lock ever
Oh an one more thing, Aurora isn't the best choice of ROM, unless that's what you like. JMHO
Thanks. I'll do both, I am kind of apprehensive about soldering the gps, I have broken things before, although I am ok with a solder gun.
Any suggestions on ROMS? I am open for them, have tried a few (Cm7, SIMPLE, Revolution, + others) but since I couldn't get the gps to work I assumed it was rom related.
You might also try a new modem with a Froyo ROM. Any of the KAx or KBx modems with a Froyo ROM should be an improvement.

Something I've noticed with the hardware fix is the author of the post here states that the manufacture date is 9.10 or before, and mine (10.10) shouldn't need it. Is this true?

Running KB5 now. Which app do you recommend for seeing what/how many satellites have a lock? The one I am using now (Gps Status) just has a spinning icon on the bottom, with no info.
I am at a loss as to why this phone won't lock. I'm willing to paypal anyone who has the time and gumption to assist with a true repair.
Edit: Just went outside with the GPS Test app (disabled use WiFi for location) and it could "see" 1 satellite, but was using 0. Does this help in giving an idea as to why it won't work?
Maybe the antenna issue can still exist post the 9.10 manufacturer date.

[Q] Help my NFC

Hello,
I'm a GSII (Korea version) user,and now using CM9.
The reason why I bought Korea Version (though Im not in Korea) is that it has NFC module. As we all know ,NFC is really convenient ,especially for exchanging business card. But I can not find NFC in system setting, could you help me ?
Maybe CM9 doesnt support NFC ,I think, can anyone provide a NFC patch or a package for CM9?
Thanks.

CM in general has issues with NFC on the GS2.
As far as I know, CM developers have the following hardware:
I9100 (no NFC)
I777 (NFC hardware, but was disabled in carrier firmware)
Last time they tried to get NFC working in CM7, bad things happened. With CM9 - don't even think about trying to start on something like this until kernel source is released. Even then, with no ICS-specific NFC libraries (until an I9100P, I777, or M250 leak shows up), it isn't likely to happen.
Speaking of that - have there been any ICS leaks for the Korean M250 series devices? Leaks/updates of Korean firmware tend to not show up here - but you're the most likely to receive an ICS update that includes NFC.
(Odd question - did you have Google Wallet on any of your Gingerbread firmwares?)
The basic problem is that there is one CM developer with NFC-capable hardware (atinm), and on that hardware, the carrier (AT&T) disabled NFC functionality. In addition, it seems like Samsung's NFC libraries don't play nice with AOSP-derived firmwares.

Hi,Entropy512
I have just tried the NFC package of M250k(2.3.5),but FC.
There is no leak for M250s/k so far,and I am still waiting for samsung 's offical updates. I wonder whether can I copy the NFC firmware of M250 (when it's released one day)to CM9 so that the module could work,or there is something wrong with signatures?
As for me ,I don't have a Gwallet on GB,NFC is not available here for shopping ,but for checking the cards' information.I use it as a cards exchanger in business.
Could you tell me why AT&T disabled NFC functionality ,but as far as I know,NFC works well in Korea now?
And the Korea Version still has other BUGs,such as the sensors don't work and no DMB,but I don't know how to let the developers know them.Though I have started some topics in CM forum,it seems not to make a difference.

I have the M250S (korean version from SK Telecom that has NFC and SIM), and I have NO issues whatsoever with the CM9 that's been released here on XDA. The ROM works insanely well, and I'm lovin' every minute of it.
I would really like to see some movement on the NFC front, I know that NFC works on AOSP roms for the Nexus S, just wish there was a way to make that work on the GS2.
Also, the AOSP versions for SGS2 Gingerbread releases were modifiable to include NFC by just installing the missing files that someone released here on the forums a few months back. I understand that the files are completely different from GB to ICS, but is there no way to compare the differences between the Nexus S NFC files and the SGS2 NFC files, and then update the Nexus S's NFC files to work for our GS2's? I REALLY want to make this work, but I don't have much knowledge on the subject.
If anyone is willing to work with me on this and teach me a little on the way, I would be more than happy to start working on this. As it is right now, I'm in Korea, and the trains and buses use NFC cards where you add cash to them and swipe them by the entrances/exits to ride the subways, so if I could get this working I would definitely be the cool kid in town (I'm on an Air Force base here until December)..
+1 to NFC
I've a I9100P (orange UK) that should have NFC but it is currently disabled as I'm using a ICS mod. I've tried using NFC enabler but it caused my system to hang on the install screen. NFC isn't vital to me but I would like to use it as the phone has it.
I guess I'm waiting for a ICS distribution to leak with NFC enabled.
Cheers

I tried installing the FM Radio app from my original Dinc, and it installed just fine, opened, showed the radio screen, and then crashed, and won't go any further than that now. Could be because that ROM was de-odexed, but I doubt it.
Have you tried pulling it from the Dinc 2 or Evo 4G Shift? I'm going to try to pull it from a HTC One S ROM if I can find one, since it's so similar to the Dinc 4G.

The FM Radio on the HTC One S ROM I found didn't work, either.
Makes me wonder if the hardware is in place to run something like this. It uses your headset as an antenna which would seem like some hardware would need to be implemented and with the phone not having the software as stock just makes me wonder.

There is definitely hardware for FM radio. Whether there is any software that can utilize it is still unknown (at least to me).
I don't have root yet but when I do that's one of my goals - to get the FM tuner working.

Spirit Free is here: http://d-h.st/P5Y .
I've had debug logs from two un-rooted users, but nobody has ever sent one from a rooted device, and I'd be interested to see. My sales stats actually show 6 people with this phone, but it seems many people don't even get in touch with me if it doesn't work. I may disable this device in Play and see if anyone notices.
Use Menu-> Test-> Email-> Logs and after 20 seconds or so press Send.
AFAICT, the FM/Bt/WiFi combo chip is the same WCN3660 on the AT&T OneX / OneXL LTE/ OneS / Evo 4G LTE and some new Motorolas.
AFAIK, nobody knows if the FM antenna pin(s) are connected to the wired headset circuitry for use as the FM antenna. If so, then software may be able to enable FM.
BUT, like the new Motorola's (Razr HD, M ?) it appears that the firmware/ROM is not set up to enable FM, perhaps via some config option that Qualcomm provides.
So I think a custom kernel and/or ROM will be required to even see if FM is hardware possible.
Or, with SU/root we may get lucky and be able to load the radio-iris loadable kernel driver and get it working. Getting it loaded at least is the main thing needed to get further info.

Thanks ! Nice to finally see with SU.
With SU your radio-iris-transport FM driver is successfully loaded.
Spirit detect and uses the HTC OEM Proprietary FM API. The problem there is that RSSI values are 0 or -128, a bad sign.
But there is still hope with the low level API.
Set Menu-> Settings-> FM API to "Low Level" and restart Spirit.
For audio, the default setting (Auto) of Audio-> Method is translated to "HTC", which is for stock HTC devices. That seems to be getting translated to the proper audio ALSA control settings. But if you lack any audio, setting Audio-> Method to "HTC OneX ALSA" or even "HTC OneX QCom" might help.

The Samsung radio uses Samsung's 'closed source' code....
As such, anybody who includes a working Samsung radio in a custom ROM is likely to incur Samsung's 'wrath'.....

My understanding is that Samsung's radio app requires changes and additions to Android frameworks for which corresponding source code isn't released. So, no.

I know there are some audio issues with Spirit in recent Slim ROMs.
I was looking into this when I tried to fix my no serial number problem with the wrong bootloader. LOL, not... Not sure if it's a permanent brick yet.
But GT-I9100 is an important phone for me to support, still in 2nd place in Spirit sales stats. So I got another off EBay and hope to see it later this week.

Most ROM devs do it for free, or paltry donations, so they tend to go for the latest.
Spirit is my fulltime+ job, so I go where the sales stats (or antipated stats for new phones) tell me to go. It's nice that Google provides devs sales info that includes device IDs.
