[Q] screen wont rotate - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok here is the problem my screen wont rotate did a soft and hard reset and all only time it switches view are when i'am in the andriod market ,netflix and so forth ,but at the home screen everything is the long way now it cool when iam reading my book or my comic books and i think i can deal with it but i do like it when its the other way too any help with this problem would be great

Did you check settings, screen and auto rotate?
Or did you lock your screen with a setting in one of the launchers?
And how did you get your market and Netflix to rotate? Mine doesn't.

What ROM are you running?

You need to be a bit more informative about the problem brother. Things like what model do you have( wifi only, 4G...) are you running a stock unrooted Tab or are you rooted and running a custom rom, if so which rom and are you using the stock launcher or a 3rd party one??? It'll help us to figure out what's going on.
Now after rereading your post a few times this is what I'm understanding. When you say "long ways" I'm assuming you mean portrait... right? That would mean that your Tab is stuck in portrait (longer from top to bottom and shorter from side to side) and the only time it jumps to landscape is when you go to Apps that are written to automatically switch to landscape when opened, like the Market and Netflix. You also say that you've done a soft rest (meaning completely powered off your Tab) and did a hard rest (meaning you did a factory rest) am I right so far???
If I'm on the right track with what I've posted above and this is assuming that your running a stock unrooted Tab and the stock TW launcher you could very well have a bad accelerometer. That's the sensor in side of our Tabs that tell it how your holding it. If you did a factory rest (hardrest) then that should have reset your Tab it exactly how it was when you took it out of the box. And auto rotation would be set on by default.
Go to settings> screen> and make sure you have "auto rotate screen" checked.
Hit us back with some more info so we can try and help out a bit more.

So far your right on...
Hey SouthPhilly...
I noticed this thread suddenly stopped.
I am having the exact same issue, and have done a reset to factory on my device and the screen still does not rotate unless forced to by an app.
Just wondering if you were going to launch in to a possible solution.
thanks.

Wallpaper issue when rotating!

Whenever I set a wallpaper on my tab, after rotating and going back to landscape the background goes blank on half the screen. If I then rotate to portrait and back it resets but it's getting very irritating when this happens. Anyone else getting this or have any idea how to cure it? I even tried turning auto rotate off but still no luck. I also tried other wallpaper apps like wizardrii. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I had the same issue on a certain rom and kernel combo.. Not sure which it was cause I have re-flashed both since then..
thanks for quick reply, sorry should of stated my tab is totally standard touchwiz with no mods.
I'm in the same boat here... I thought I found a fix the other day. I just disabled the screen rotation so my screen stayed in landscape. Worked for about a day or so.
I don't know much on how Honeycomb handles setting wallpapers but i get the feeling it has something to do with that wierd crop function Honeycomb uses.
I use ADWex as my launcher and it still dose it.
I did notice that on my eVo4g (running Gingerbread 2.3.5, using ADWex) that when I turn my eVo from portrait to landscape the wallpaper doesn't resize or reposition its self near as nice as on Honeycomb(when it works like it's supposed to). So much so that I started just using an all black wallpaper.
Most likely its something that can be fixed with some kind of a matinace update. I haven't gottin around to rooting Tab yet to see if it happens on other rooms, and maybe I can get around to it next week.

My wallpaper stopped rotating even though I set it to auto. I flashed the ROM I was using without doing a factory reset first and it got it working again
I had this problem to. Try using Wallpapyrus or Live Multi Wallpaper(wich i use now).
Never had that problem nomore.

CM9 - Possible to change Touchstone Charge Behaviour

Hi all,
When I charge my HP TP running CM9 nightly, a clock screen is displayed automatically. I note that after my screen time out period of five minutes, the screen does power off, however when I wake up in the morning the screen is on displaying the clock screen - I guess email or some other notifications turn the screen back on.
Basically, can I change the behaviour so that when I put the TP onto the Touchstone, nothing special happens and this clock isn't displayed? I have an app that switches the screen off when the case is closed, and essentially this charging behaviour is interfering with this. I don't want the TP clock blazing away lighting the screen up all night.
Thanks,
Andy
Wow some refuse to do any work on their own....
If you want to shut the screen down all you have to do is hit the power button and the screen shuts down
As far as the Desk Clock app... You simply go into app manager and clear the defaults for it

Thank you for your reply - unfortunately the option to clear defaults for the clock is greyed out.

I'm puzzled by your sarcasm - no, I can't figure this out by myself as I can't identify the configurable part of android that triggers this clock front end. I had Googled it but I can't find a suitable answer there either. Whilst I can shut the screen off with the power button, as per my original post when I wake up in the morning the screen has come back on.
Cheers!

Then you have something installed waking your TP that we have no way of troubleshooting without some type of log.... when you shut the screen down there is no reason for Android to turn it back on unless YOU have EXPLICITLY given an app YOU installed permission to do so. As far as the clock... when you set the TP on the Touchstone one of two things happens... a dialog box comes up with the apps that can by default be activated when placed on Touchstone OR YOU HAVE designated a default app to do this....
Now if YOU can't remember which app YOU ALLOWED to run then you have one of two choices.... go through all the apps in app manager clearing all defaults OR wipe all data and start from scratch and pay attention to what you press this time

Thank you for your reply, but unfortunately you are wrong.
I only have the clock app installed that triggers when the device docks - no other apps respond to this event, therefore when I dock the device I don't get presented with the option/choice, it just displays the clock as there is no alternative. I've found the best solution to be to install 'Screen Off ' from the market. This has an option to act on the dock event, and now when I put the device on the dock I get given the choice as to whether to show the clock or to power off the screen. This works pretty much perfectly, and without the clock showing the screen stays off, instead of coming back on randomly after I shut it off - therefore, I don't think that the clock was coming back on before due to notifications from apps/emails, but be cause the clock app itself was triggering - possibly when the device reaches full charge or something and temporarily disconnects from the dock or something, I don't know. In summary, you need more than one app installed that is coded to respond to the dock event, otherwise when you dock the device android just defaults to the dock event and powers the screen back on periodically. I have never explicitly enabled this behaviour, and without installing another app it seemingly cannot be changed or disabled.
I thank you for taking the time to reply to my post, but I think you should learn something from this thread - just because a problem may seem to be user error doesn't necessarily mean that it is - your post is completely wrong which is fine as I appreciate that you are just trying to help, but by getting all aggressive over it you've just ended up looking a little stupid. The forums should be all about helping people, not ridiculing them - hopefully this post will serve to help anyone out with a similar predicament.
Cheers.
Ignore cdzo72 - he's one of the most sarcastic members of this forum. He seems to have a hate on for anyone who has an issue with anything, and can't solve it for themselves. You get used to him, and ignoring him.

The clock app doesn't trigger itself. Mine charges all night and never turns back on. That said, it is almost impossible to move the pad while it's on the TS without charge disconnecting and reconnecting. And that will trigger the clock app. So, if you have the TS on an unstable surface that allows ir to be inadvertently "jiggled", that could cause the clock to turn back on.

Hey Man,
I don't know if it affects other devices to be honest. On my phone the clock app is configurable, but on my Cyanogenmod9 HP TP tablet it isn't something that you can change the behaviour of (if you tap the stock 'Clock' app it just locks the screen and displays a clock, you cant set any options like on my SGSII). I don't know if this is a feature of tablet OS'es in general, or just the CM iteration of Ice Cream Sandwich.
Either way, the 'Screen Off' app references working with a number of docks (blurb specifically references Sony ones) so I'd give it a shot and hopefully it will work for you.
I had that problem too, it was very annoying. I installed dock no op from the market and it finally stopped waking me up. That seems like the only option since cm9 doesn't let you set the dock behavior.

[Q] Homescreen in Landscape mode?

I dont know what happened but my Galaxy S3 can tilt from Portrait to landscape while in Homescreen this morning.
But now when I tried it again it does not do it anymore, I did not restart the phone or anything. I'm on stock TW and not rooted.
Am I missing something here why I cant do it anymore? Take note that currently the screen rotation is still turned on.
I had the same issue on samsung tab and have been said by the samsung tech team to recalibrate the tab , tried it and got it resloved.
got the issue again after tried the stap again no luck, tech guys said I need to do a factory rest and that fixed the issue.
Hi mate, currently in my case my homescreen is still in portrait mode . But I'm just wondering why can i adjust it a while ago to landscape mode while I'm in home screen but now I cant.
The only difference is I'm connected to my wifi router a while ago and now I'm not connected to it.
Take note that I did not use any MHL adapter (I read somewhere else that using MHL will enable that functionality).
Hmm. maybe a bug. But that was cool

When you say the 'issue' is the issue that it was rotating or that it wasn't? Is the homescreen supposed to rotate? I'm trying to decide if I should get a GS3 or a GNex today and I'm not familiar with how touch wiz normally operates.
What do you mean by Homescreen? The screen you get when you have unlocked the phone? If so then mine has never tilted into landscape mode and is always in Portrait, is this not suppose to be the case?
@Claytop
Yes mate. But right now it's not going to landscape anymore. Don't know why. I guess its a bug. hmmm

sorry for my ignorance, I never saw the default homescreen rotate in landscape mode. but in the tab both default homescreen and application homescreen rotate.
can other users confirm if the default homescreen tilt/rotate in landscape mode??
I am going ok with the touchwiz if you need a faster response probably you need to root and put in some good rom.

I believe that's the normal operation in the homescreen because no one replied experiencing same scenario I mentioned
Iv installed a sikipedia widget and when i click it the home screen goes to landscape mode...
would very much like to have this as a standard.
It's better to factory reset the device. If u still face the issue, try going with roms. It may get better.

[Q] youtube full screen w/o having screen rotate on??

hi just wondering if it's just me or others r having this issue. to get youtube to go full screen I need to have screen rotate on. coming from sgsII all you had to do was turn the phone and u didn't need rotate turned on. maybe I'm missing a setting
if there is a workaround or fix I would to hear about it
I have auto roate off and I just had to double tap the video. On my Evo I could press down and hold on the video and hit the maximize icon that popped up.
I tried double tapping... I'm on youtube version 4.0.8e if that helps and I'm on stock i747 rom
anyone?
Happens with ICS on the Sprint SGS2 as well. Seems to be a TouchWiz issue because CM9 rotates like it should. Not sure if there's a workaround other than waiting for CM9 to make its way here.

Auto Rotation problem

Hello guys. My new S2 has a problem. When i activate Auto rotation it only works in landscape mode, but when i try to put it in portrait it doesn't work, no matter what position i rotate my phone in. I think the problem is the accelerometer sensor. How can i fix it?

The first thing for me to try is always a factory reset, wipe cache, dalvik and do full reset. 9 times out of ten this has fixed issues for me.
If it doesn't work then you can go into test mode on your phone and test the accelerometer. Open dial pad and dial *#0*#
That'll give you some idea if it's the accelerometer

You both have to provide your ROM details.
Anyways, if you guys are running CM9, CM10 or any AOKP based Roms, then the instructions below should solve your problems:
1. Goto settings - Display
2. Under ROTATION, enable every option you find there.
All should be well if you the simple instructions.
If you have any more questions, do let me know

I'm on AOKP JB 4.2.2 MR1- Build 5 with my GT-i9100. When I try auto rotate after a reboot it works. 10 minutes later it won't work anymore but after some time it might work again and after that it's stuck in one position again. Calibrating my device doesn't help and I can't find anything else in settings that could help. Thanks in advance.

Just to mention, in Camera mode, it is flipping normally from Landscape to Portrait and contrary.

An easy fix for me on rotation issue
Hey i had the same issue as well, and i followed some of the other instructions in trying to wipe my cache and factory reset to fix the isse, nothing happened my sensors were still off when i tested it and i could put it to landscape, but i could not get it back to portrait. and i also tried some other suggestions as well. Finally i decided i was going to live with it until i found this app call (auto rotate widget) by jason hull, i would post a link but i just registered.
Some how this app fixed my phone and all i did was install it, i never touched any of the settings and now my sensors are back to normal and the phone is rotating perfect now.
