[Q] 1st steps to start upgrade it - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi all,
i come from htc g1 (dream) and in this one i made all the possible changes.. radio, spl, recovery, rom..
i'm using the latest radio (the one with 15mb ram hack), death (haykuro..and so on..) spl and i always used cyanogenmod with amon ra recovery.
i know very well hot to move with it but i'd like to have a new phone and right now this SGS2 seems to be the best one..
but... how do i start to upgrade it??
ok.. 1st step is root it, with my dream i did it all manually without other programs.. what about with this one? i heard about a program that help to do that (dont remember the name).
then, i have to replace the recovery to make root permanent. which one to use?
after root and recovery, i can use any rom. i always used cyanogen but i've seen there isnt a stable one for this device.. !
should i then replace something else?
thanks for your time
EDIT:
im in Hong kong now and they sells this device for 4.100,0 HK$ 410€
is this one the same or are there some limitations due to opposite side of the world ? such as different gps module or wifi, 3 band instead of 4, different kernel not rootable... ???

[Q] Some Help Please - Rooting

Hello.
================
Gonna start off by saying I loved the noob video when signing up.
I also want to preface by saying I genuinely have looked - all day - and am still very confused.
I've been on iPhone since since the 3g, I loved it, but I wanted a change, and the GS2 gave me reason to change. I was massive into jailbreaking and customising, so naturally I want to tinker with this phone.
The problem is I don't have a clue. I know nothing about android, and I know nothing about rooting ect...
Any of the many guides I've seen all say different things, I can't seem to find one clear cut definitive guide.
================
I don't know what info you need so I'll just list what's in the "About Phone" menu.
Galaxy S2 i9100
Model Number - GT-I9100
Android Version - 2.3.3
Baseband Version - I9100BUKG1
Kernel Version - 2.6.35.7-I9100BUKG2-CL342890 [email protected] #2
Build Number - GINGERBREAD.BUKG2
It was bought in Ireland today on the Vodafone Network.
I know the pros and cons for Rooting - as I said I have been researching as much as I could, but now I just need pointing in the right direction to a guide that will suit my needs exactly.
Also, I have ordered a 16gb sd card for it, so I will have it soon, but I do have a 2gb one if that's any good for now? - Does the sd card retain the root or can all files be deleted off it after?
I thank you in advance for your help.
have a look here, i found it to be the easiest to follow and the kernal works great

Thanks a lot guys. I'm gonna have a good read through all of your suggestions now. I'll let you know how I get on.
Thanks again.
The easiest way to root is just put phone into download mode and flash CF-Root, it will automatically root your phone with busybox and other good stuff. I think you can then flash Stock kernel again if you don' want to use CF Root and the root will still remain intact.
Also, can I use a 2gb card for this then switch to a 16gb without it affecting anything?
Root is not involved with the external sd card so you can swap .
jje
So, If I follow this one [just to root] - does that mean I then can put other stuff on like kernels*? And if I decide I don't like the kernel can it be taken off? - or do I put another on top and it deletes the first?
Basically [as I'm brand new to rooting] what do I do after rooting?
You do nothing after rooting . All it does is open the door .
kernels can be flashed via Odin one will replace the existing kernel . Likewise firmware can be flashed via Odin .Likewise custom roms though they are often via CWM .
Read some posts in the development section is what i would start with stock roms and custom roms .

Thats a root kernel, you flash it, it roots your phone, but apart from that it acts like stock.
You can put other kernel's ontop and they will replace it, you cant remove a kernel.
You will keep root if you change your kernel, but if you change rom you may need to reroot.
Thanks a lot for all your help. I'm rooted now, frozen bloatware and very happy.
Does anyone know if I can get the battery icon in the status bar to show its percentage? I've only seen widgets which I don't want.

How to flash Chinese I9100G ??

Hi,
I am sorry for the newbie question.
I just bought a Galaxy S2 GT-9100G here in China.
Only after buying did I realise it is a 'G' model. damn.
anyway - I would like to 'reformat' the device, and place an Israeli ROM on it.
I hope I am using the correct terms.
The reason for this - is that the chinese version comes without Android Market,
and other stuff (and the Israeli one does).
1. Do I need to root the device first before I can change the ROM ?
2. If so - I have seen in this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18099806
that flashing the kernel is the only way to root the device.
I have flashed my brother's Galaxy S2 (I9100) a month ago, using the steps shown here:
http://samsunggalaxys2review.org/root-your-samsung-galaxy-s2-heres-how/
(used OdinDownloader and SuperOneClick). Do I do the same with this device ?
Which file do I supply to Odin ??
3. Is there anyway to flash the Israeli ROM on this device ?
or it won't work, cause Israeli ROM is only for I9100 and my device is I9100G ?
If not - what can I do in order to flash a new ROM with built-in Android Market ?
Thanks to everyone who can help !!!
If u flash the new rom to your phone, it no need to root!
I own a I9100T, I flash it to I9100, it work fine, so I think u can flash it to an Israeli ROM.
Check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192575
In general, be careful about flashing the China phones. It seems they went out of their way to make sure those phones comply with China's government restrictions.
i9100G got KH4 and KI1 rom, u need to donload insecure kernel to root them

Where can I get the KH4 and KI1 insecure kernels ?

Just use Odin or do I need SuperOneClick also ?

So, ghmail, are you saying you have managed to do so yourself ?
Change the ROM on an I9100G to any ROM you want ?
On the topic - how can I backup everything on my device ?
I mean - the bootloader, the ROM and all the other stuff I might mess up if I brick my phone ...
Please remember..u cant flash any I9100 custom rom because its diff between I9100 and I9100G..If u flash it the phone will be semi bricked and u need to flash back to the ori rom of I9100G KH4 or KI1..
China GT-19100G-ZCLC2
Hi People, I am a total novice here. I have been reading your forms for few weeks now, since i Bought this SGS II-I9100G in China [Big Mistake ?? :-( ]
This is my phone :
Model - GT-19100G
Android - V 2.3.6
Baseband - 19100GZCLC2
Kernel - 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #2
Firmware : PDA:LC2 / Phone:LC2 / CSC:LC2 (CHN)
I read thro creezalird pdf user guide and as guessed DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT' dint work with both methods on my phone.
I just want to root the phone so I can install few useful apps, no fancy stuff like flasing or custom rom etc. As you know even google play is blocked. Can someone point me to right link/guide me to do it.
I did read many articles (too many of your forum's) and probably why Im now totally confused. Reason is I do not see anything pointing to ZCLC2. Maybe I am not looking hard enough.
I got it done using superatom's kernel. Now all sw works on chinese phone.

New SGS2 coming in what to do?!?!!

my new sgs2 is coming in a few days. what should I do before rooting?
should i update so it has a newer kernel/firmware?
I'm trying to follow Chainfire root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 and it seems that the old radios are not supported.
You should research. If you found a thread with instructions on what to do and you are not sure, ask there.
You should however NOT ask for hand-outs.
Basically all you need to know is CF-Root. Or you could try one-click-root

I did do research. My concern is that only the older versions of CF-Root work with older kernels, like KE, etc. so if I get an old phone, I'm wondering if I should then update to the latest gingerbread version before using CF-Root so I can apply like 5.0?
Hello,
first of all if your phone isn't a new one you will see if its already rooted or not !
if its not, then you have to root it and the only way from stock rom is to flash new kernel version with CF-Root, and CWM is great too for not being often on odin/download mode if you don't want to...
anyway have nice time with your phone its a great one and hard to brick as long as you don't touch to bootloader file..
The CF-root thread has a big list of ROM versions. Just pick the kernel that matches the ROM version of your new phone and you should be all set in rooting the phone.
Here you go.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I'd strongly suggest you use the phone without doing anything to it (rooting, flashing kernels etc.). Most people find the phone just right the way it comes out of the box.
You should only consider rooting or flashing something if you have a specific need for it.

help with my new s2

i am from galaxy mini forum so get a galaxy s2 but how to know if it is S2 or S2 GT-i9100 o and what the diffirence?? and can you gays pleas link me to a tut aboug instaling costome recovery, which ODIN to use and so on .... last thing which is the best stable rom to use .....thanks in advance
1) Check the sticker on the phone chassis under the battery.
2) Differences between SGS2 variants ? Wikipedia.
3) Just about everything you need to know to get you started is in the Stickies.
4) There's no such thing as the "best stable rom to use". There are a heap of custom roms for the SGS2, it's an individual preference thing. And because no two people use their phone the same way or have it setup the same, and because component-wise no two phones come out of the factory exactly the same, your experience with a particular rom will most likely vary from mine.
The best thing to do is to get your phone rooted, preferably with CWM installed. This will enable you to backup, restore & flash roms/kernels in a matter of minutes. You can than try a bunch of roms for yourself. If you find you don't like a rom you try, it's easy to go back to your previous setup easily by restoring a backup; recommended regularly/before you flash anything to your phone.
ok so by flashing cwm and then a costom rom the divise will root by it self and do i have to flash a stock ics rom to install a costom ics rom??????
Lackchoo,
Flash one of Chainfire's kernels. His instructions are very clear. That will give you root and CWM, and possibly also a yellow triangle at startup which you shouldn't worry about at all.
You don't need to flash a stock ICS ROM to flash a custom ROM. After rooted, in CWM, just install the downloaded ZIP ROM file of the custom ROM. You will keep root and triangle will go away.
Ditto what the above person said about ROM's. However, you can try Cyanogen (Do a 'stable' release, not a 'nightly'), its the most 'popular' ROM in terms of numbers. One can't and shouldn't say which one is best. But for a newbie, I think Cyanogen is a good place to start. Perhaps it will give you the least issues and the most 'oohs!' for your initial newbie effort
I don't have the links with me from the smart phone, but just search 'chainfire kernel root galaxy s2' and 'cyanogen galaxy s2' and you should find the relevant thread. Read it slowly and repeatedly! I know I had to

Start with a ROM of your choice, just pick one you'd like to try and test it out. If you don't like it try another one out.
*Repeat untill your phone dies

Hi Vinay, Post ur questions in Q & A forum. Ok the difference between custom and official ROM is u ll get ROOT access, many mod from official. Moreover check the caution lines before flashing any ROM.. Watch some videos on flashing ROMs. Also always a copy of main original official ROM..
and a nandroid backup would be also useful just in case something goes wrong
Hi!
Custom rom made by developers that can be from stock (samsung) basis or aosp/aokp (google) basis according to what the devs wants and need, so you need to know about what features and themes are included in the rom so that it would match your preferences. There's sure are a lotta rom out there to try. Be sure to flash only rom that made for your phone and made a backup just in case..
Happy flashing!

Hi to all and thank you for helping me.
The big trouble is that i led my phone in to strange state where only triangle appears and logo of samgung and gets stuck in that state ;after downloading some wrong ROM, my mobile got to this state , now i want to get back in order to wakeup my mobile and brings it too original state as pervious , also to inform you that the mobile was locked to local operator and i tried to unblock and i did mistake .
I just want to have brief guide to how to start as there are many information in this forum and i dont know which tutorial should i base ON.
Basically i just want to know which ROM should i take and procedures in order to install the correct ROM in correct way. I allready has the ODIN installed in my PC and at the moment i can navegate in my phone by Clockworkmode but i dont know what i should do after that , i do know that i can put the ROM in SD Card and try to force the mobile but first i would like to have exprties opinion on this matter, PLEASE.
Regards
Vinay
Well basically if you want to restore to original state, you have to flash the stock rom for your phone or the backup you made before (which I assume you didn't made it). Try to find the stock firmware/rom for your phone version/country/region on sammobile and flash it using odin (put your phone to download mode first). Hope it helps..
P.s: don't worry about the yellow triangle thing, it'll disappear after you flashed the stock..

Ok ;i understood but if i dont want to go back or lets say if i want to root and unblock without original stock ROM what procedure should i do , please.
I am also having difficulties finding the best ROMS for mobile S2 GALAXY where i should find them , please.
Best Regards
Vinay Navinchandra
Dont mention "best rom" since its against the rules.Youll get a warning and your/this thread locked.
Yeah, it's a matter of preferences if you talked about what best so browsing around and try for yourself..
Some custom rom got pre-rooted, and some need to be rooted first or even not at all. There's lotta method to root sgs2 and it's not hard at all, just google it and you'll get it..
