[Q] How do i reduce launcher lag? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i've tried them all...
i have probably 50+ apps
arc launcher: smooth, but still has to redraw homescreens occasionally and app drawers more often than not.
GO launcher EX: my favorite, but still had app drawer and homescreen redraw, don't like dock.
TW4: very very smooth, but every now and then, would freeze my Vibrant. tried countless ones from countless ROMs.
TW3: I figured it would be better, since it's the phone's native launcher, and im using a themed one based on the Simply Honey default launcher. smooth, but still has redraw in app drawer, and occasional lag on homescreen.
i've also tried the usual launcher pro and ADW....dont like the docks, and after a few days of use, would LAG....
is there a way to have the launcher stay in memory to reduce said lag?
ROM: Simply Honey 5.1
Theme: Simply Bloody
Kernel: Talon T5s, Bullet when I need GPS
Mods: FFC, GPS

There are several ways to smooth out your launcher and your smartphone experience in general.
1) Overclock your CPU. Multiple kernels support overclocking. Nearly all Vibrants can handle 1200mhz, and many can go up to 1440mhz without any tweaking.
2) Change your governor. Most people use the Conservative governor, which while great for battery life, is not so good for smoothness as it takes too many milliseconds to ramp up to full speed. Using Performance will keep your CPU at max clock speeds while you're using it, and your phone should still go into Deep Sleep mode when the screen is off, so the effect on battery life isn't too drastic. Ondemand is, I believe, the default governor for the Vibrant, and a good middle ground.
3) Switch to MIUI. This may be true for all AOSP ROMs, or all Gingerbread ROMs, but my personal experience is only with MIUI, and MIUI is the only ROM I've used that didn't feel like an incremental upgrade. Under MIUI and OC to 1200mhz, my launcher (the default MIUI launcher because it's quite wonderful) is perfectly smooth. 60 frames per second or better at all times. I've tried any number of tweaks, but when I was on Froyo, any and all launchers I used lagged to some degree. Not so with MIUI.
4) Zeam Launcher. It's very minimalist, but also has an excellent feature which allows you to perform certain functions by swiping or double tapping the screen. It's also the smoothest launcher I've used on Froyo.
Hope that helps!

I had been a long time Launcher Pro+ devotee; up to just a few weeks ago. After a increasing problems with start up and widgets & apps freezing, I tried Zeam. It was just a whim; I really didn't expect much. It took a while to get used to too; mostly because I was so conditioned to the gestures and settings I had on LP. I'm loving it now though. For a "minamalistic" launcher, it has quite a few features. Features that actually took me a few days to even notice. My Vibrant is flying again. It is such a smooth launcher. Give it a try.
And let us know what you think.

Laggy Homescreen

Has anyone noticed their homescreen has gone laggy when moving from screen to screen?
I like the default launcher, so I'm in no position to change it, but it's developed alot of lag since I first bought it exactly a week ago today.
Only plays up on the default launcher.
had mine over a month, and I find it to be the fastest android tablet in terms of switching screens...very smooth experience over here so far.
Thanks for the response - I wonder if a data reset would do the trick.
agreed that it is one of smoothest tablets on the market. I sometimes experience lag if I have a live wallpaper active. perhaps getting a task killer with a widget on the home screen could help quickly kill anything running in the background that could be the culprit of the lag.
Everything is running smoothly except the home screen and I don't really want to have to do a reset.... hmm
Have you loaded up your screens with tons of shortcuts? If I remember correctly it made my homescreen animations jerky but I then switched to Launcher Ex.

theres nothing on my homescreens lol
I agree with the OP, the launcher's performance is sub-par. I don't have any live wallpapers, or hardly any icons, no widgets, and I can see it's not perfectly smooth. I installed ADW Launcher which is clearly significantly faster and what I would consider perfectly smooth and fluid. Anyone that thinks their launcher isn't choppy probably just needs to compare against a trial install of ADW.
I like the look of the default launcher though lol
I find this very strange that people are experiencing this lag. I am using the default launcher, a few incons on main screen, and at least one widget on every other screen, some 2 or 3 widgets, and still super smooth... way better than samsung tablets, asus, motorola, etc....
Should I do a reset in the short term?

Lag Issues? Remove EVERY stock widget.

So, I have narrowed down my own lag issues to being caused by the samsung widgets. I been really annoyed with this phone and the redraws/home screen lag. Now, I have wiped, and _never_ added a samsung widget to the TW launcher, and my device is running very smoothly, with 3 home pages populated.
I came to this conclusion when I tried ADW. ADW was running well, slightly sluttery, until I added the samsung power widget. ADW was completely crippled, which makes me beleive drawing that widget takes a lot of processing. I then tried the myagenda widget with the same results. So, now, as a rule for myself, I am not running any widget that came stock on the phone.
i dont have the lag ither but i use a diff homescreen widget.
I have used launcher pro for my phones before but stayed with touch wiz on this one. I removed the stock clock and weather Alps and installed beautiful wigets and the screens are a bit snappier.

not sure i'm comfortable removing all these yet since Clockworkmod is still beta and having issues (means no nandroid backup).
I also run ADW - You should definitely run the V6 Supercharger script version 9.3.6 on setting 9 ( ends with 250,300) and i saw a big difference... also using setCPU performance setting gives me great results. still about a 10% lag i notice.... i've been bugging the devs of golauncher to optimize galaxy note and they been working with me so don't worry.... we will have our cake and eat it too, very soon!

I should have been more specific. You don't need to remove them from the phone, just remove them from your home screen.

Go Launcher performance with ICS ROM's

I've seen a few comments here and there about poor performance with Go Launcher EX on various ICS ROM's.
The symptom for me was very slow performance opening the app drawer (over 100 apps), as well as screen transition slow downs when I had lots of widgets on my seven home screens (I use several Android Pro widgets). Go Launcher appeared to reach a point where it needed to ask for more memory and I would see an su request (granted successfully) and then transitions between home screens would be painfully slow. Eventually, Go Launcher would typically crash and restart and things would be fast again temporarily.
What appears to have worked for me was to increase the dalvik.vm.heapgrowthlimit setting in build.prop from 48m to a larger value (I'm at 96m now, but I think 64m worked fine). I made the change using Rom Toolbox, rebooted and things have been silky smooth with Go Launcher since then.
No promises that it will work for anyone else, but thought I would share in case it does. FYI I'm using BAMF Rezound 0.6, but tried this on at least one other ROM as well with success.
I noticed this myself. Switched back to CleanROM GBE. Runs like butter.
I never really had a problem with it, but then again I had mine OC'd to 1.7 GHz and always on performance. I've recently switched to Nova Launcher since it's essentially the ICS launcher which is pretty damn smooth.

+1 for nova launcher, silky smooth on any ICS rom!
same problems here with go launcher so i uninstalled it. launcher pro works good but the icon resolution is far too small. i also think nova is a bit on the buggy side yet.
Another +1 for nova launcher. It is smooth as silk and the aosp look is just awesome! Had it on my Inc, transformer, and now my rezound

Another +1 for nova not one problem and everything is ridiculously smooth i love it
go launcher is super slow on gingerbread too. it's alot of lag when opening and closing the app drawer. any solutions for this?
If you're on ICS, why not take advantage of that and run NOVA launcher?
if you're into the widgets that come with golauncher then a better alternative for gb or ics is using adw ex with APW.the widgets with APW are far better than go widgets. this setup is so exquisite on Scott's newest 3.6 release.

Why is APEX launcher so choppy on SlimRom?

I just installed SlimRom and I am loving everything about the rom so far.
I just wish APEX wasn't as choppy as it currently is. Any suggestions on how it can be made to be smoother without switching to a different launcher?
I came from CleanRom Pro 4.5. with Sense. Very smooth scrolling with that. I've been hearing APEX on Nils is also smooth. I would like to stick to SlimRom due to its simplicity.
any inputs would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
set scroll speeds to 1 or 2
It's all about the settings and configurations, you can set the scroll speeds, set the animation and transition scaling in settings/development options, use something like spare parts plus to set some transition speeds and force 2D GPU rendering, things like that. But you can get it set up and dialed in to feel however you desire (well within reason) if you spend some time in there. About like having a girlfriend I guess.
Part of it if you're on is a desensed rom is that without the smooth rosie tweaks in a lot of the roms, the launcher graphics acceleration feels weird.
I've never had any choppy issues with Apex on SlimROM, or any other ROMs. Nova has always been choppier for me regardless of the ROM while scrolling though.
I usually keep my homescreens pretty simple, 4 widgets total, a few apps and a live wallpaper, so there's not a whole lot going on to lag things out. Plus I don't have a bunch of apps installed, so it doesn't have a lot to load up either.
I'm not sure why it's laggy for some people but not others...

Custom Launchers not as smooth as stock ones, across a variety of brands.

Hey I'm just wondering if anyone else has noticed that many stock launchers of various devices are leaps and bounds ahead in smoothness, and consistency. For example, years ago when I had a samsung phone, no launcher was as smooth as the stock one. This is also true for me today, where I have an LG G4 which should have no problem pushing 60fps on a launcher, but none appear to except for the stock LG one. Even nova launcher, which is often cited as the fastest launcher, doesn't feel smooth after about 30 seconds of usage, with a noticeable "tracer" effect on the home screen, (where I can see the location of icons in more than one place while scrolling) which is not present in the stock launcher.
I am not rooted, but if someone who is wants to, download a fps meter app, and test on nova and your phone's stock launcher. (LG, Touchwiz, Sense etc.) I just want to see some other people's opinions and experiences on this, as I am quite sensitive to frame drops due to my PC gaming.
