[Q] Tablets rooted with Honeycomb - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Looking for recommendations of an older model tablet that I can buy and that can be rooted and loaded with custom Honeycomb rom, prefer one that supports additional storage and decent cpu.
If I could afford it I'd buy a Xoom!
Thanks,
Fred

Well, that's what I went with. Normally couldn't afford it myself, but Wal-Mart seems to have started carrying the WiFi Xoom as well as a few other tablets (at least around here, anyway). The Xoom was 500 bucks before tax, but everything else was 400 or less.
Hope that helps.

Just checked Walmart online - $499.00 still kinda high, that's why I'm looking for alternatives that I can load Honeycomb rom, like maybe the Viewsonic Viewpad or the Asus Eee Transformer - hovering around $370.00

which would you guys prefer if they were ALL the same price?
I was thinking about pickin up a Xoom WiFi today but now that I see theres no custom roms its not even worth it I dont think...

LOL, im going to just swap it out for my gTab and hope my wife doesnt realize it LOL
I guess the Xoom is a bust because of the lack of SD Card means no recovery partition or custom roms. Plus theres no Honeycomb source yet so no HC roms. Bummer! I guess my gTab will last until the transformer is opened up
Both the Xoom and the Transformer trump the gTab in pretty much every category except price and tinkerability (if that's even a word). So if they were all the same price, I'd go for the Transformer, mainly because of the screen type.
Here's my variation on the original question:
GTablet = $285
Transformer = $500
Xoom = $600
transformer. Getting tha cash and waiting for the relase in us.

this should put things in perspective.
Yeah I'd like one of the newer honeycomb tablets but not for close to 2x the cost.
If the Transformer is locked down it loses a lot of it's luster too.
The gTab is a good device that gets better when you realize how flexible it is. I am willing to bet that if Google officially released the source for Honeycomb we'd be running it already, even if it's 1/2 the price of similar tablets. (this is probably one of the reasons why Google isn't releasing the source for Honeycomb)
Nah, not paying $500 for the Transformer. $400 is tempting if tax isn't involved.
What's funny is, a week ago I would've, and was going to, pay $600 for a wifi Xoom.

I have yet read a preview that went in that sort of detail, most of the previews have been pretty high level.. ie: it has a screen! that works with touches! and it's a tablet! etc etc
I hope it's not locked down because I've always been an Asus fan and the price looks reasonable
xoom
I would go with a xoom if they were the same price. partly for the screen, but also for honeycomb. In 6-12 months there will be a lot more apps for it and will be the norm. IMO.
I'd have to go with the transformer easy..
The screen, two usb ports, sd card, doesnt it even have a card reader?
That along with the keyboard attachment, which increases battery to up to 16 hours.
All that, and it shouldn't be locked down like the moto.
The Asus Transformer is $400, not $500. And the dock is only $150 adds another 9 hours or so of battery life.

Noone knows pricing for sure. All we know is that there will be a 16gb Transformer and 32gb one. They should be $100 difference in price. The 16gb transformer would be the price point to compare to the gtablet.

Yeah atleast 3 major retailers had north american pricing at $399 usd. I'm hoping that price holds which I believe it can. Just saying no one knows for sure.
Best Buy's website had the 3g one listed at $1199 on their website before release.

Should I pick one up for $250?

Is $250 (CAD) a good deal for this tablet?
I have a Moto Atrix as my smartphone, rooted.
I am interested in tablet for watching videos at home and reading pdfs and ebooks and suchm, as well as playing games.
I believe it is already running g-tab-comb but I would want to update it with something more recent.
I have the opporunity to get this or a dell streak 7 (sealed) for $250.
Is there still good dev support for this tablet? How does the future of it look
i had the gtablet, but sold it. Now with the Android market not showing the G tab on the website, I am sure glad that I sold the G tablet. Get the tablet that has paid the license to Google and has the real market (imho), in otherwords not the Gtablet.

You'd still be able to access the market via the app on the Gtablet itself. you just wouldn't be able to remotely install apps onto your tablet via the market website on a computer.
I use a GTablet (with FlashBack 10.0) I access the Market several times a day. I am able to download new apps, update older apps. No-- my device is not listed, but nevertheless I am able to use the Market.
I had been using an older version of the Market App, and with that I could not get new apps. I could update older apps just fine, but it would NOT download a new app: NO DEVICE. With the new Market App, I have no problems.

I sold mine a while back also. I would put that $250.00 towards something that might have a chance at some ICS love.
The Gtab's screen is great for video, but an IPS screen on a higher end tablet is a must for extended ebook reading. Also the market issue is very minor in my opinion.
I picked mine up less than a week ago, put FB 10.0 on it and I am already selling it and moving to a Transformer or Iconia. The display has really bad viewing angles, other than that it isn't too shabby.

I saw that today as well. (well my wife did). Still only $100 off a 16GB version, I told her not that great of a deal.
To the OP, my advise is not spend one dime with Viewsonic. They abandoned this product 3 months after it's release. Viewsonic has been nothing short of horrible regarding the GTab and it's customers that spent the $300-$400 last winter. I have a perfect one for $200 if you really want one, $225 with dock. It is rooted and running TNT lite 4.4.

HP Touchpad with Android? I didn't know that could be done. I know they were selling for $99 when they went belly-up. I would say go for it. Shipping would only be about $25 if you really want the GTab. I am also selling my Asus TF101 32GB getting ready for the TF201 32GB but that will be twice as much with keyboard dock.

Don't take it. Bunch of people complaints about HP touchpad with android on it.I pay my viewsonic $250 (4 days ago) and my friend pay $150 for his HP touchpad - I still like my deal and product more (didn't like stock tom). I can access market using Vegan rom and I can even backup apps on my phone and transfer them to g-tab.

I all you want is a decent 10" tablet running Gingerbread or Honeycomb at a low cost then gtab is one to consider. If you want ICS then you will have to get the lastest tablet (not yet available) with a killer cpu and lots of ram.
So your choices are
1. Low price 10" or 7" (nook color II or Amazon Fire)
2. Medium price 10" like a Acer Iconia, Toshiba or Asus Transformer
3. High price 10" currently being developed for the ICS (New tranformer quadcore etc)
Good luck and have fun.
Woot.com has the Motorola Xoom 32Gig Wifi for $329 today....
And Motorola has stated that the Xoom will get ICS early 2012.
Advantages over Gtablet..
32gig vs. 16gig storage
1280x800 vs. 1024x600 resolution
1 gig vs. 512 meg ram
GPS, Barometer, front and rear cameras
Better viewing angles
Official Google support/Motorola support
Android OS 3.2.1 with stated upgrade to Android OS 4.0
FYI...I have two Gtablets and an Xoom. I'd take the Xoom every day over the Gtablet.

I bought a Gtab from a seller in the US. shipping was about $23 BUT beware as the buyer in Canada will get hit with an extra $70 in duty fees for "importing" the tablet.

Cheap tablet

I'm going to buy one... Thinking about the n5zero (5inch) or the nova 7 paladin (7inch), I'm buying just for playing some games, read some book, and flash a lot of roms.... I'll have any problem to flash roms or root? These things came with the boatloader locked or not? I'll have any problem with this? Or it's going to be normal and easy as a normal device? (I'm not a noob, I know how to root, flash roms... I have same experience... But just to be sure...)
Ah, if you have another idea for a nice tablet in the same price (60- 120 dollars) it will be welcome...
Thanks a lot and sorry for the bad english...

Wait until later on in the year, around April - May. nVidia and ASUS are releasing a tablet for $249 with Tegra 3 (Quad-Core, of course), 1GB of RAM, and it's got a nice resolution of 1280x800.
The idea of cheap tablet may sound tempting, but there wont be developing community backing it up. So in the end you have a device with same android version forever.
Go for big manufacturers like asus, samsung, motorola.
Refurb Nook Color can be had for $129 and makes for a nice little tablet, I'm running CM9 nightlies on one as we speak, it's got a really good dev support / following.
I'll second the nook color. If you can get a refurbished one for under $150, it will beat the pants off of anything else in that price range. The display is one of the best at any price, and the build quality is exponentially better than any of the Chinese tablets.
You mention flashing custom roms - the cheap Chinese tablets don't usually have any. If you are really lucky, the manufacturer might put out an update or two. The nook color, on the other hand, has dozens of custom roms and tweaks already and plenty of people still working on more. Check the nook color development section yourself and see what I mean.
I have a arnova 10 G2 , I brought from carphone werehouse for 135 pounds.
I have added all the google staff to it ( archos hate google ) its fab .
Is it a cheep tablet , yes.
Do i look at Emails etc only on it , yes
Does it have the same power as my Desire...a wee bit less!!
Wil I put ICS on it.. one day !!
You should consider the Kindle fire. I'd also suggest looking at the htc flyer. Its a little above your price range but I think it's a great tablet. At $120 your goIng to get what you pay for, a really lousy tablet that will be a waste of money because it sucks so much. Better to spend a few extra bucks and get a useable tablet.
You should save your money, at that price point you will get an unusable POS that no custom ROM can fix.
If you can find an BNIB HP Touchpad for $100-$200, then I would grab that sucker. It runs 1.2 ghz by default, and can be overclocked to 1.7 (1.9 works too, but its unstable), and it's dual core! It's super fast with android on it, and currently has a couple unofficial builds of cm9 running smoothly on it. If you don't want to wait, the hp touchpad is a great choice. Gotta get it brand new though, as they've been discontinued and "repaired" units often involve cracks next to the speaker.
Some no name tablets will see little to no developer support so watch out for that. For your budget I would consider a Nook Color refurb. It has pretty decent dev support.
I have a no-name tablet with nice specifications for the price (Cortex A9), but it doesn't have community support. It's a pity because you can get bored easily.
kindle fire can be rooted and use android
Yeah.. I'm getting the kindle fire... The touchpad is to big for me..

Nook Tablet, imo.
I have one. $250, double the specs of Kindle Fire.
It's fully cracked now, I'm running a fully-working CM7 on it.
Also, I think ASUS' $250 Tegra 3 tablet is a myth. They just teased it to stop people from spending money on Nook and KF.
And if it ever gets released, that price won't be awesome at that point anymore. By that time those specs won't be anything special.

[Q] TouchPad - ALL Accessories|HP Keyboard|Case|Mint

New to this forum so excuse me for relying on the awesome XDA community but is this worth $240? Brand new 32gb (wifi only of course), mint condition with case, hp keyboard, all cables, etc.
If so, I need to make a commitment in the next few hours, your input is appreciated!
Very tempted to purchase and go dual-boot with CM7. Just rooted my buddies TouchPad and kind of digging it. I figure I can sell my iPad2 and recoup the expenses.
Considering they are going for around that much or more on eBay, I think that would be a good deal.
Didn't even think to check ebay honestly, I had ran a quick craigslist run but nothing beyond that. Thanks for the tip.
32 or 16 gb?
With newer stuff coming out this year like a tegra 3 tablet that only costs 250, I guess that the magic price point of the touchpad has to be about 200 for the 32GB model for it to be worth it.

32GB, updated the initial post. Yeah, I was thinking $240 was only questionable because I was getting case + HP keyboard with the deal. I could arguably sell my ipad2 for $4-500 pretty easily and get my money back and as much as I liked my pad, I could find ways to love an Android tablet instead. Plus it seemed the dev for this thing has moved so quickly, it seemed to be a safe bet for the cost.
Ya very good deal I got mine for 280 with 16 gb and nothing else so you should buy better than most tablets around that price even the ones that cost more
that's a very good deal, especially considering that you're getting the case and keyboard.
Good deal, buy, install ICS and welcome to the bunch!

I suggest saving up for software that helps you to finish your sentences.
Honestly, I just (yesterday) bought the ASUS TF300 for the current advertized bundle price of $485 (after NY state tax) for the tablet AND its dock. At that price I just couldn't say no (that and chase credit card rewards dollars begging to be spent!) lol... Happy with it so far and far less than I originally spent on the Galaxy (32Gb version) when it was first launched. Even with AOKP's great build, I missed having the camera and stability on the 10.1 and I won't miss that. Plus my wife was very happy to get the 10.1 hand me down so it'll be staying in the family!
Personally, I prefer the slightly slimmer, slightly lighter build of the 10.1 as well as the 10.1 display over the TF300 but I just can't beat the price of $4xx (your tax may differ) for a Tegra 3 tablet with microSD slot and its dock with its additional battery and SD card slot!
I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone has about comparisons between the two...
Is it worth selling my tab to get this then

Um - maybe you should be asking yourself what you want in a tablet? Its going to be something only you can answer for yourself. Me, I was content with the 10.1 except for the delay in ICS. The chance to upgrade to the Tegra3 with the dock with the TF300 was in a way, a sideways step for me that I was happy making. But if you say, want to note take, play upcoming games, etc. the choice of tablet might change.... What are you looking to achieve?

Like other posters said, it depends on what you are looking for in a tablet, what are you going to do with it etc
I myself am not going to trade my G.Tab 10.1" 3G in for a new tablet any time soon, I am just waiting for the official ICS update, but if I had to buy a tablet RIGHT NOW and for whatever reason couldn't wait for some of the upcoming tablets, I would most probably buy a Transformer TF300 (with its dock, of course) but if I could wait for a little bit longer I would buy a Transformer Infinity or a Note 10.1" (to be sure which one I would of course have to carefully review them once they are on the market).
Anyway, whatever your situation DO NOT buy a Transformer Prime.
****ty GPS and, above all, poor Wi-Fi reception: a capital sin for a tablet!

Seconded. I don't know why someone would still buy the prime over the TF300. Sure the TF300 is clocked a little slower (although fixable via hacks and not noticeable anyway me thinks) and a more plastic build (but on a par with the 10.1). As currently an owner of both the 10.1 and TF300 I can attest to the Wifi & bluetooth ranges (which are very important to me) being at least as good as the 10.1
It was just I got offered a good deal on my tablet meaning I would only have to pay £150 towards the transformer and not pay it till next year

Actually that's a huge pro for me, I quite dislike the feel of metal in hand and very much prefer good quality plastic but apart from this (which is subjective) using metal and glass on MOBILE devices is moronic.
It serves them right that they got these GPS and Wi-Fi issues for choosing a metal back just to copy the BS "Apple-esque premium quality materials"!

If you mean this deal is good only towards the Prime then I would say pass on it...
Hmmm $150 for just the prime? At that price its hard to say no - but I for one would get quickly frustrated with the wifi and GPS issues. Personally, if it was a case of keeping my 10.1 and saying 'what the hell...' for a prime for $150 I might do it. Actually that was my situation with the TF300, due to credit card rewards + a little father's day gift the TF300 only cost me $100 out of pocket so even though I was happy with the 10.1 I figured I'd give it to my wife and go for the TF300...

BTW, in Italy the TF300 sells for € 399 tops ($ 504, £ 320) so that wouldn't be a good deal here..

Questions go in the Q&A section
i'd say, just wait for ICS (cause our tabs will get it eventually), and/or buy a dockable keyboard (if you really would like that anyway). there aren't really any pros on that asus model, already pointed out by fellow users of the forums.
