[Q] Which Kernel for the latest Kies update - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the subject states, I'm trying to identify the right unlocked and original kernel to use with the latest [PDA:KH2 / PHONE:KH1 / CSC:KH2 (ORA)] to root the device? In case it matters, this is for an SGS2 on Orange in the UK.

I dont really understand the post but at a guess you are trying to root your phone ???
But the topic is posted as kernel for kies update ???
Kies loads off firmware details not kernel .
latest Kies may not update non standard firmware .
Root + CWM .

Oops, forgot the root bit
Yep, I'm trying to root the phone with the aforementioned level of firmware, but I cannot see the KH2 rooted and original around anywhere.

KH2 root no you will have to follow the instructions and use KH1 or KH3 .

[Q] Difference between Kernel codes??

I just want to understand what the differences in kernel codes really mean, and how they are tied to the device.
I bought an SGS2 from 3 UK in May, it had KE1 on it, and ultimately I rooted it using a KE7 kernel from Chainfire's thread. Everything worked fine. The phone was recently stolen.
So I got another from 3 UK, and it came with KF4 on it... Why is there a completely different letter kernel? What is the difference between KE* and KF*.
And how are these tied to the device? Since my device has a KF kernel, does that mean it will always and only be compatible with KF kernels? Does this mean the device 3 gave me this time, is actually different in hardware from the one I received a few months ago?
Also, referencing Chainfire's thread, his kernels carry a number of codes in their names http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399. He clearly says to match the (K*) code, so that would logically mean my KF4 would correspond to his ZS_OZS_KF4 kernel. What does ZS_OZS mean? Is that not something to do with the CSC? If 3 UK's CSC is H3G, then why does the OZS kernel match?
Sorry, I know these are a lot of discrete questions, but I would like to better understand all this terminology and the meanings of it all. Since I'm somewhat late to the Android/Smartphone party, it appears that everyone just throws around these terms like it is already common knowledge. So any help catching up would be appreciated.
AB comes before GH 1 comes before 2.
Codes are one month of release and number of release ,So KE7 is before KG2 .
So in your case KF was built the month after KE .
Always best to do as instructed and match kernel .
Hardware is identical firmware is the operating system the kernel the modem the apps etc .
CSC are country specific settings only .
Product code = phone identity that gives its firmware upgrade path via Kies .
Official branded firmware from the vendor .
XDA firmware is generic stock Samsung firmware not belong to any network as will be all modified firmwares .
Chainfires will be laid out in the format XEU KG2 ,
XEU area for that firmware = Europe KG2 the release number of the firmware .
Samfirmware see letter code .

hey thanks that helps quite a bit.
If I'm on KF4, and Chainfire has releases for KG, why is it better to 'match' to KF?? rather than using a newer kernel like KG?? At what point *can* I update to a newer month's kernel?

Better as in we know its compatible .
Kernels are not released by Samsung its a whole firmware .
You have KF4 firmware Android 2.3.3 KG is or maybe 2.3.4 so possible mismatch where you to just install a later kernel .
Usual XDAers rout with a new phone is remove branding by flashing latest firmware for the relevant area . Stock firmware is way ahead of network released firmware . So you could upgrade to KG2 full firmware Root by flashing Chainfires KG2 root kernel .
Follow that up by installing a custom rom if so desired .
Warranty Root and Custom firmware both invalidate warranty .
Thats overcome by either flashing original branded rom or flashing a stock rom they will remove root .
A usb jig is sourced to reset custom rom counter to zero if so required .
USB recovery jig is a must have as it resets yellow triangle removes rom count and can load a bricked phone to download mode when the phone does not respond.
SGS2 unbrickable no its 99% unbrickable 99% recoverable from a brick . Though those that dont bother to read and follow the instructions will have a higher risk .

okay cool, that is very clear then.
Since i'm in the UK, if I wanted to use stock firmware, and wanted to use the newest, I'd be best off finding an XEU_Kxx versioned one. Where Kxx is the most recent release.

Why is it that everyone says XEU is Europe? Its not Europe its United Kingdom and Ireland.
The samfirmware page has loads of firmwares for Europe. Many of them say 'Multi-CSC'. How does that work? Does this mean you must set the CSC after you install the firmware? Or does ODIN autoassign it when you flash or does it just not really matter what the CSC is at all?
Its a multi location CSC that you use with many areas in the CSC Include inside Europe and United Kingdom . .

Yesterday i installed KG2 from.

Then i applied Chainfires KG 2 root .OXA KG2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14283397&postcount=4
Followed that up with UK CSC from Stock rom thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14283397&postcount=4
Above all flashed via Odin
Equals KG2 Android 2.3.4 with UK CSC
Set phone up check it all works .
Ignoring yellow warning triangle for now
Downloaded and put Cognition custom rom on sd card .
Booted to recovery mode in CWM i choose install zip let it install and reboot .

One job left which i tend to take the easy way and use the USB recovery jig to remove yellow triangle and set rom counter to zero .

[Q] remove CPW CSC and use XEU

hi i am currently, according to Kies, using the latest version available to me on my Galaxy S2 (i9100) which is unlocked and i bought from the carphone warehouse.
The fimware I am using is 2.3.4 and my Kernel is 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468
PDA:KI4 / PHONE:KI1 / CSC: KH1 (CPW)
however i know that this isn't the latest official release for the UK. I have researched numerous threads and i have tried changing me CSC using #*272*IMEI# however i am locked to CPW. So i then did more research and have found that i need to debrand my galaxy s2 from CPW to XEU to get the latest generic unlocked UK firmware. Can someone please tell me how to do this without using #*272*IMEI# because that doesn't work?
Your phone is unlocked but you want to unlock it ???
CPW is about the best CSC for the UK as it covers more networks ..
You will not get an update via KIES by changing your CSC ..
You can update and debrand by flashing a stock rom from the stock rom thread but you will may lose the KIES update path from then on.

yes but if i remain on CPW i will stay on android 2.3.4 where as if i switch to XEU i get the latest updates since it is the most generic UK firmware? and surely if i change my CSC then Kies will offer me an update to 2.3.6

CSC has nothing to do with updates .
KIES reads the firmware and hardware and vendor codes from the phone .
Two paths to updates official via KIES you wait for vendor release
Or XDA via ODIN using latest stock Samsung firmware
Third possible is to use CheckFus to download firmware or find a way to change the codes on the phone .
jje
okay well howcome if i have unlocked handset i am still on 2.3.4 when there are people in the UK with 2.3.5? (sorry i am a noob)

You have a set of codes on your phone that determine its vendor and ID etc
Kies reads those codes
O2UK xxxx O2UK 11xxxx etc etc .
Then looks for that firmware on the server if it matches it downloads if it does not match it cannot download . So unless the vendor has updated then you have no download . Its the phone vendor who updates .
CheckFus and SpoofFW are two roous that may bypass the Kies checkup .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318683&highlight=spooffw
But this is XDA Developers and we dont use KIES .
jje
okay how do i know who my phone vendor is? i think it would be easier for me to just install cyanogenmod 7.1 however i am having trouble because when i followed all the instructions, i successfully rooted my phone installed ROM manager. however when i installed clockwork recovery and rebooted my phone it loaded android recovery mode 3e and says signature verification required. i gave up after a few attempts and thought it was due to my kernel? does the kernel version affect cyanogenmod? i.e. do newer versions of CM require a newer kernel?
You have Carphone Warehouse CSC hence no updates as most carriers tend to provide the updates.
Root with CF-ROOT and use customs or just flash a different firmware newer version with uk CSC with ODIN.
Sent from the valley of the shadows....
how do i CF-Root? and cant i just change my CSC so i get the newer updates if cpw doesn't release any?
No for reasons jje already said.
CF-ROOT is in original development and has concise instructions its very simple
There are lot's if stickys too take some timeout and read up as most information there will help you regarding learning about device.
Sent from the valley of the shadows....
okay then can you answer to questions for me? does a newer kernel affect the cyanogen mod and can you tell me how to install CM7.1 using CF root seeing as it didn't work last time due to signature error?
bomskiboy said:

Do you mean can you put another kernel in CM a rom that already has a kernel
and can you tell me how to install CM7.1 using CF root seeing as it didn't work last time due to signature error
The instructions are on the first page .

First time flashing CyanogenMod 7 to the Samsung Galaxy S II, or coming from another ROM?
Root the device and install ClockworkMod Recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Perform a NANDroid backup of your current ROM.
Copy rom to internal SD card .
Format the system, data & cache partitions of your device via mounts and storage recover
Perform a factory reset.
Flash CyanogenMod.
Flash CM a second time .

first time and does whatever kernel you currently are on affect CM mod? or does CM install a new mod?
BTW 2.3.4 is the latest XEU firmware so changing to this won't make any difference to your firmware version number.

[Q] Need some reconfirmation about Rooting and CWMing a Hong Kong i1900

Hi guys
Thx for reading this post.
I am writing because recently I got a 2nd hand i1900
And I am really eager to root it and install custom roms like my other devices.
But what hold me back is this i1900 is apparently rooted from the previous guy.
But unfortunally he probably only rooted it but did not install CWM, as I don't see the ROM Manger app and neither I just go to normal download mode instead of CWM recovery
Here is some information in the About phone page
Model number GT-I9100
Android version 2.3.3
Baseband version I9100XXKE4
Kernel version [email protected]#2
Build number GINGBREAD.ZSKF1
One more thing, I am actually quite certain this is a generic HONG KONG I9100, as the phone comes with the warranty card and the IMEI matches.
Unless the previous guy was able to amed that.
What I want to know is IF CF-Root-SGS2_XW_CLK_KF3-v4.0-CWM4.zip should be the choice of root and CWM for my case.
According to Chainfire state that "just match the download"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Thx again for reading~~
Dont use Rom Manager .
Root + CWM .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
You have a very very old kernel with newer baseband .
You should upgrade to Android 2.3.6 then root .

THx JJE
But with the down of Multiupload, I can find those latest firmware and kernels back.
Is there any another ways to do it
Like rooting directly with a CF-root?
or may be this, I just found another one listed on cyanogenmod wiki
Mainly using Heimdall
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II:_Full_Update_Guide
In my case, can i ignore the fact that I am already rooted, but continue to use heimdall to root again and install CWM

Think you are very confused kernel is part of the firmware cynagon is a custom modification not official .
You would be far better off reading the FAQS and GUIDES and not bricking your phone .

Kernels are not firmware you require full firmware . Read the thread instructions .

Okay. Got it. read them. Ty JJe.
So from what I've read I understand that I can install whatever firmware that is available here, under the OFFICIAL FIRMWARE section, the original and current firmware that I've got being available here, under the 3 Network, under Italy.
Can I install _ANY_ firmware ? Or any other one that has the same PDA version (XWKI8) ?
Afterwards.. If I want to go back to the original FW the phone had, is flashing the firmware version above, under the 3 network, Italy everything I have to do ? If for example I've got a problem with the phone or software and want to use its warranty. Ty.
Thanks all.

As JJEgan told you, you can flash any firmware. Just a suggestion: After you change the firmware, reflash the NEKI2 modem. It's one of the best for 3 in italy
