[Q] Which ROM ? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just bought Galaxy S so I'm complete noob here. Previously I owned Galaxy Spica, but this is completely different. I know you are avoiding such questions, but there are so many ROM's, kernels, firmwares that I really can't decide which one to use. I haven't found any up2date comparison between ROM's, so could you please recommend me a good one or at least explain me the main differences?
Thanks.

I guess the question is "What do you need?"
Do you want a flashy shiny rom, there are those, and if you want a minimal rom, there is those. Try some out, I've tried like 20 roms, before i got satisfied..
happy hunting!

I'd like good all-rounder, but if I have to choose, I'd rather have a good looking and usable one. I see that CM, DarkyMod and MIUI are the most popular. Maybe I should choose MIUI, what do you think? Or should I go with GalnetMIUI?
p.s.: I think mods should move this thread to I9000 category

I would recommend this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091 .

Thank you for first solid recommendation. As I'm not allowed yet to post into development section, could you explain me in short what are the advantages over official 2.3.5 (except root)?

CyanogenMod maybe? Ive been using it on many of my phones. Its awesome.

"This ROM will make your Samsung Galaxy S blazing fast". The other advantages are listed in the thread. Check the "Features" section.

[Q] Almost ashamed to ask, but what are the "top" ROM's?

I browsed through the development section and there is SO MUCH STUFF THERE. :/
Even if I read it all I would still not really get a good answer to my question:
What are the most popular, consistently maintained and stable ROM's out there that aren't heavily themed (I like AOSP or close, not MIUI)?
I've used CyanogenMod on my Nexus but it's still in experimental phase for SG2 and I don't really want to start off my new uberphone with broken stuff.
So far from what I've gathered is that Villainrom is at least consistently maintained, but their website is almost devoid of any information in regards to looks and features.
Batista70(?) also sounds like a relatively popular choice?
I realize this sounds like a completely idiotic question from someone that's too lazy to read, but honestly to answer this question you can't just read for a few hours, you need to have been around the community for a longer time to get the feel of everything.

You are correct if you want an honest opinion look yourself try them their are a billion users asking the same question with the same answer their is no best rom .
Why not start with the simplest rom that you understand what's on it and how to flash it .
Then work your way through others .
jje
Atm, i think the best roms (no one over the other, they all good the same)
Batista70 Foxhoud 2.0
Villainrom 3.0
Leomar 2.7
those are the roms i personally tested, and looks like also the most "used" by the community.
Im sorry if i didnt listed someone else rom, it's only because i didnt tested personally.
All the 3 are KI3 (2.3.5) based, so they may have few bugs/instability since 2.3.5 is less than 1 week old.
For the KH3 (2.3.4) every rom is very stable and works fine, i personally tested:
Cognition 1.5.1
Lite'ning 6.1
Checkrom v3
If you want a not perfect (few bugs) but totally different rom, i suggest you to try gangsterjoop Miui 1.9.23 or Galnet Miui 1.9.23

That was actually more a roll of the eyes to this type of question. It gets answers like yours (no offence meant) where people just tell you what they use. Not many people have done extensive testing of every single available ROM, but people still keep asking these lame questions.
Also 'best' is very personal, unless one gives certain criteria.
I agree I'm new here and the selection is daunting. I've HAD,
HTC Tattoo
HTC Desire
ZTE Blade
Moto Defy
HTC HD2
Sony X10
This phones section seems even bigger than the HD2 forum!
Ephumuris
the best rom out there with regarding battery life and looks is..................
the one that will suit your needs and that YOU have to find out and experiment buddy.
its all good for us to tell you which one is good but unless you dont try for yourself you wont know..
but if you want a choice i recommend VillainRom or Batista two that i use back and forth or even CheckRom
but whatever you do make sure you read through each roms thread and take it from there...happy flashing

What is the Most popular, most downloaded , and best ROM so far....?:fingers-crossed:
Who cares? Look at the views and posts on the rom threads in the dev section.
The most popular ones will probably always be CyanogenMod and AOKP. That doesn't mean they're the best ones though. It's best to experiment - have a flashing day or a flashing weekend, try out the ones that seem interesting to you and pick the one you like the most, don't pick a ROM based on how many downloads it has. That's my advice.
Check Rom for me has been by far the best. My PERSONAL opinion is that it is the best out there.

Their kitchen pro is actually unique and makes flashing a breeze. No more going into CWM. SImple click and install.

Barebone Stock Samsung ROM

Hi,
I've been a great fan of XDA ever since I bought my first smartphone aka, Galaxy S2. I check in over here almost everyday for my daily dose of new, roms, apps, themes, and what not.
Ever since I rooted my phone, I've tried a lot of ROMs including CM9, CM10, AOKP, etc.
Now, I want to go back to stock Samsung ROM. I tried official LPY which is good, but bloated with unnecessary apps and what not.
I wanted the community to recommend me ROM which is basically the stock ROM by Samsung, with all the unnecessary apps and services removed, and optimized for better performance and battery as well.
I believe, NeatROM is there, I've tried but I'm kind of facing some minor problems here n there.
So is there any other ROM of the same likes?
first thing is to be aware of the rules. like this one.
Sticky: DO NOT POST A "What's the best ROM/Kernel/Theme?" THREAD!
You can just root and use a custom kernel and remove all them crappy apps(hubs/facebook/twitter etc).
Or try something like rootbox.

With all due respect, I am aware THE RULE. Technically I did not ask for THE BEST ROM. I just posted a query regarding a certain type of ROM which might exist here, and hence require the help of forum members to may be pin point towards it.

Try custom stock rom or wanamlite
It's the same thing, no matter how you try and bend it. Essentially what you're saying is you're too lazy to search/try stuff out for yourself. If that is the case, frankly, I'd question why you're here in the first place. Rom recommendations Are forbidden here. Thread reported.

[Q] How to find a good custom ROM & kernel?

Since it doesn't really appear to be allowed to ask for good ROMs, how can I find a ROM that fits my needs?
I'm basically looking for a list of ROMS that are compatible with my device. By "compatible with my device" I mean that it should support display output through the HDMI and of course support for all the other hardware compunents. My device is a Xperia Neo V btw.
If I remember it correctly I need an ICS or GB ROM.
So is there a nice list that allows a complete noob like me to find out which ROM could be my best or at least a good choice?
Maybe a list with descriptions or feature lists so that I can tell which ROM I like the most.
And of course it would be nice if the list would only contain or mark compatible ROMs.
I'm also looking for a list of compatible kernels.
Thanks for your help.
Best regards,
Ferivon

While searching for roms/kernels, it's best to see in the development section of your forum. In your case, here it is :-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-neo/neo-v-development
Try to use a more recent rom as it is easy to get support for them if anything goes wrong.
Thanks, but the problem with this link and also with this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1316394
is that I have to read the thread of every ROM/kernel to estimate if they fit my needs. :/
And there are soo many, it makes it really difficult for a noob like me. I mean I don't even know the differences between ICS and GB. :/

Sadly yes, that's the only way to choose a rom. Spend sometime reading the threads, see screenshots (Try to keep an eye on the buglist too !)
For your second question about choosing ICS or GB. I won't go much deeper, You just have to keep in mind that a newer android version means better user experience, compatibility with more apps and so on. Hope this helps you
In general, KK>JB>ICS>GB
That's sad, well, thank you anyway.

i agree with you. I just need a rom that would be smooth for a lot of time. Most roms stuck after a month. I am looking for more that 5 months and I am still looking. I try the GB releases, they are quick but the applications crash all the time. Then I try ICS releases I find 3-4 really good releases but everyone of them had a different problem and after a month it was really slow. Now i am trying some KK releases. I try 3 releases. 2 of them was good at the begin. Only the one still works after 2 weeks. It got some bugs but it still works.
I will recommend you some releases to try.
Gingerbread: Gin2KitKat, Spacious GB
Ice Cream Sandwich: Spacions ICS, Superleggera, Ultimate HD
Kit Kit: ParanoidAndroid
This till now... You will find all of them here http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-neo/neo-v-development
Currently using Mike's CM11, before this I'm using Jelly Vanilla EX(that smooth Jellybean 4.2.2) and I settled on that rom for almost half years(nice for me)
And as usual, it's hard to recommend roms because everyone has different needs. If you wish to find a good-enough rom, try it by yourself and feel it
Sent from my MT11i using xda app-developers app
If you want to go for jellybean (4.1.2) then I have been using Super JellyBean on my device since long... Its stable and battery friendly.
Moreover you may try other roms to suit your needs
You may find the thread regarding this on device's development section
Hope this helps

Rom Install

I want to try a new rom for my phone cause i got bored of CMD10 what rom do you guys recommend to me i want it to be stable and fast
There's hardly anyone reading this forum. They have moved on to other phones. But read the currently and recently active threads in the development forum to see what's available, and get clues as to what is good.

thanks i remember talking to you about this like a year ago and you recommended me ShoStock 3 is that rom good or there betters??
Also i read the cyanide thread and looks pretty good what do you think its better i want the opinion of a that has more knowledge in this than me
Do you want Touchwiz or AOSP? If you want touchwiz, then I would recommend either Cooked or SHOstock3, as either one of those is stable. I'm not familiar with AOSP having barely ever used it, so I can't make any suggestions there. Read the threads, as I suggested, and maybe post your questions in those threads.
