I can't get the tab passed obtaining ip address status on my gf's wireless dsl. It works at my house but not here. I put in the password correctly but it won't connect. I also cleared the dhcp list using root explorer and no go. Any suggestions?

You sure Tab can use WEP? Why does she use WEP, it is totally outdated and unsecure.
It's connected before now it doesn't. They're technologically retarded so the encryption method they don't care about

Dug out an old spare router to check, the Tab supports WEP.

<offtopic>I feel duty bound to suggest that you upgrade it for them as much as possible. They might not have the understanding but it only takes one curious 13-year old wanna-be hacker to break WEP in ~1 minute and they'd be potentially liable for all the dodgy porn/bomb-making lessons/copyrighted material that the aggressor downloaded.</offtopic>

Hey there
When Tethering or using the hotspot what security is there for your pc? I mean is there any firewalling at the phone?
Also, in general when connected via 3G etc what ports are exposed inbound to the phones IP address?
Thanks

Why don't you try driodwall to restrict applications.
It's free from the market but i think it requires root access.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda apps
To be honest I think you don't really need to worry much about it. Security should be at the PC level by using a reputable and up to date security program.
Also, although I have heard about security threats from apps etc, just using it for tethering is not effected by this I think, as you are just using the data.
Ever since my home 3g modem blew up 4 months ago I've been using my old S1 as the sole home wifi modem without issue.

Why did you not just use Google?????:

Thanks ntop and sxi200. I was thinking, if you tether then your usb port gets the data in, Im not sure if that can be firewalled, maybe it can. Droidwall, perfect thanks
As for why i didn't Google it, my data connection was woeful and googling was too painful. Got a new contract this afternoon which was why i asked. If you had to Google the answer yourself then why bother replying with sarcasm?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
P.s. I wasn't talking about public hotspots, even they have a firewall on their uplink. What i was asking was if using your sgs2 as a modem which has no firewall then what is to stop inbound connections especially when tethering via usb. Droidwall. Thanks

A bit more info would help us help you. Whats your level of understanding? Are you new to android? Is your router wireless b, g, n? What type of security do you have implemented? What happens when you attempt to connect? Can you scan for networks? If you can do you see any, do you see all but yours?
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
Ok i can see the networks available an mine is one of them. When i try an connect it just keeps flashing connecting. Im not a noob. And i believe its a n.

You can try to change the wifi signal type in your router's settings

1st, make sure you can connect with a pc over wifi, also make sure you're wifi is on a channel between 1- 11(if in the us). My guess is that the problem is in your security, make sure the password your using is right, try setting your router to use wpa2 personal with aes encryption, try switching off your security long enough to try and connect, if you can than thats the problem. It also could do with the dhcp server, go to settings >wifi settings >hit the menu button and go to advanced > set a static ip with in the dhcp pool, ie. If you have a linksys router, the lan ip would be 192.168.1.1 if so if the dhcp server is set to use up to 50 addresses 192.168.1.2-192.168.1.50 would work

Ok so I've been running an unsecured network at home cause I didn't know how to set up a password. If well today I talked that issue and my network is now secured with a password. So when I try to connect my note to my network it asks me for my password, which I enter without fail because it seems to accept it, however I'm not connecting to the Wifi network. Anyone have any suggestions for me?

+1.
Also try forgetting the home network on the phone then reconnecting.

After you type in the password click on the network name again and click connect I have to do that sometimes for it to work

Any other ideas?

Ok I've tried everything, but I can't get my note to recognize the wifi. Plus my laptop is extrememly slow now that it is secured. I'm contemplating uinsecuring it to solve all my problems.

Network will be a bit faster unsecured, but not recommended of course
But now it won't recognize? Or won't connect?
You try all the different types of security?
Try to use a channel lower than 11.

There should be some sort of test you have to pass to get an account here.

Yeah, a reading comprehension test would be excellent.
Read the OP before you jump in on a negative comment.
Is this an example of second rate. . .

If you have something helpful to add, add it. Otherwise, move on.
This happens on my note from time to time. Disabling then re-enabling wifi on the note usually fixes it.

I remember having to delete the wifi list because tapping 'forget network' wasn't doing that.
I also recall fiddling with a wifi supplicant file. Does anyone know what I'm referring to?

So anyways, did you try a lower channel? Is it an 'n' router?
It Is an m router and I did try lowering the channel, still no luck.

Try setting upnp inside router settings. Shot in the dark, but might work. What type of p/w protection are you using? Are you having issues with anything else connecting wirelessly?
Well, I use my network with open security. But I allow devices to connect if their MAC address is in the list.
I'm on classicnerd and my LG Lucid is completely stock using FoxFi as a wifi hotspot.Sometimes it won't connect but sometimes it does. When I was rooted,it didn't connect at all.Any suggestions? Thanks

Foxfi is good enough for systems where adhoc networks don't matter. The only way I have been succussful with tethering on the touch pad is with root and Wifi Tether app. Just Google it and side load it as it is not in the market. I hope that helps.
instead of using androids built in wifi settings to connect, I use "wifi analyzer". its free in google play, and allows you to see and do things that you can't using stock wifi connection settings. You can set different channels for a 5ghz as well as b/g/n 2.4ghz, as well as reconnect options etc etc. it's a nice way to see which channels are best to connect with.
Thanks,I will give that a try

just because a device is rooted does not mean it will automatically see an ad-hoc connection from another android device. ad-hoc/peer to peer connections from droid to droid are tricky and flakey alot of times or just wont work at all depending on the kernel. everyone usually thinks that tethering and hotspot are the same thing. they are not. there is a big difference between ad-hoc and infrastructure connections.
FWIW, I have zero issues tethering my TP using the stock tethering feature of my Galaxy Nexus.

+1. That was my point. Ad hoc is touch and go device to device. I had to try several combinations to get my Samsung E4GT to tether well with my TP. The OP may want to check the LG forums to see what is working with that phone.
Thanks!I'll look around.

While I don’t know much about the OPs ROM, I was simply trying to say he might want to try the built-in tethering—assuming it’s available—versus some third-party app.
I don't think stock Lucid has a built in tethering

I've heard of this issue with WEP (or one of those wifi acronyms) not working. I can't remember if it's AOSP only or if there's a fix but I'd definitely ask in the AOSP circles if you don't get something useful here. If this helps in your searching, there's some guys with netgear stuff not working that posted and it turned out to be the encryption type and they made some changes and it started working or quit dropping.
Jayochs had the problem I believe

My Dna wouldn't work with my router when it was set to use wpa I changed it to wep and now it works fine. I guess it all depends on the router.
