4g still broken on bootloader unlocks?? - Motorola Photon 4G

So, is everyone who is using custom ROMS giving up 4G to get it?
As I understand it, the available unlock methods break 4g. Is that correct, or is there a better way now?
Thanks.

I read somewhere that there is a work around that restores 4g but I have not seen it for myself, don't worry it won't take them long to get things going.

From what I could tell, the workaround is to relock it after flashing.
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk

Has anyone tried the relock? Does it work ok?
Honestly I don't feel I need a custom Tom for this phone because it works so well as is. Today I got home from work and had 70% battery remaining.
Thanks.

what does this mean exactly?

sorry, i'll always be a noob at this stuff.
well, with my Atrix, until we get our bootloader bypass straightened out, we're just running Pseudo-ROMs right now (AOSP SMS, Gingerbread theme, etc.)
I'm not sure how this will affect your root though? I know that even my Inspire was a b**** to root, and all I had to do for my Atrix was SuperOneClick.

It'll be like the DX/D2. No custom kernels, no totally getting rid of Sense if you don't want it, etc. With root you can remove bloat from /system/app. But like I said, not sure if this will affect root or not.

Yes, but look at the all the development for the Motorola devices. The Atrix, it seems like, is the only device that seems like it has a chance to run custom kernels besides the OG Droid.
The Defy has 2nd init running, which allows for ROMs, but not kernels.
Evo 3D devs have a lot of work to do if they wanna crack this, I think.

We should be able to get partial root, similar to what was originally released from unrevoked. No custom kernals or ROMs, but you will be able to run any app that requires root as well as remove anything from the ROM that requires root access i.e. remove from system/app

Rooting photon worth it?

Ok I have had my photon for a few months now and I am coming from a evo and a hero before that. Those phones needed to be rooted to get the best out of them. I was looking around the development section and while I know there isn't a lot of roms, I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on rooting. I really have no need for wireless tether, and while I would like to remove some of the bloat, I just don't know if its worth it on this phone.
Just throwing it out there to get some input from other photon users.
Thanks guys
For me, it was worth it just to run an adblocker. That's all I use it for.
It's a very fast and easy process.
The photon runs great as it is, but like willysp said just the ability to use adfree makes it worth it.. and of course if you like modifying little things here and there to make the device more yours
And to me was actually the easiest device I have rooted thanks to the one click root script.
There's a couple of other ways to root it but that was the first I found.
I came from Hero and EVO as well. This phone is great as it is. No need to do anything else. I have to said beside Nokia, Motorola is the best phone in term of reception.
Which method did you use? Did you flash a rom after rooting or did you just keep it stock and just use ad blocker?

I root for adfree and LED's hack mainly but also quite a few other that I can't think of. Editing the build.prop is also a huge plus gotta have my GAMELOFT fix lol
You can use the one click method which takes 5 minutes.
One good reason to root is to use SetCPU, which easily doubles your battery life by letting the CPU slow down when not in use.
So what is the process? Root and then flash a custom recovery? I just need a step by step of what to do.completely forgot about setcpu. But don't you have to have a custom kernel in order to use setcpu?

That's incorrect.
SetCPU requires more than root. Needs a custom kernel, which requires unlocking. And we don't have a fully functioning unlocker.

Slowing down your CPU (underclocking) doesn't save any battery life, undervolting however does.
And yes a custom kernel is required to undervolt and to flash one we need to unlock the bootloader.

The bootloader is perfectly fine, the 4g issue is because sprints security keys for wimax look at the bootloader state. Not even the official test phones have 4g.

I suggest that you start your own thread, (I don't have an issue with you posting about this here), but you'd get more responses for help if you post in a new thread. The only people that will read this are the few with bootloader news, like I said, the few. But, if you ask for help in a new thread, chances are, you'll find what you're looking for. Good luck!
You can unlock your bootloader, flash cm7 (or your rom of choice), and relock your bootloader, and then voila.
CM7 with 4g.
But dont use those as exact intructions LOL.
Theyre are threads about it. Look in the dev section.
You might want to try that out before you suggest it.

One question (even though i should prob make my own thread im not in a hurry to get the answer plus its half the same subject) i have the cmw RECOVERY, ive been out of town and since im normally in kansas city (sprints headquarters, so perfect 4g everywhere) i just wanted to check, if i have cmw RECOVERY does this mean ive lost 4g?

Thinking of rooting - Sprint

What's a rom that has good battery life and speed? Also need stability but understand there will be bugs on most roms. I hate the laggy ness on stock.
What recovery is recommended for installing roms? This is the Sprint version. Oh and I need a rom with 4G working, I don't have Wi-Fi at home and 3G on Sprint is a joke.
Sent from my MB855 using xda app-developers app
My understanding is (and Im stupid) 4G is lost when you unlock but if you dont have it anyway, why care? 3G is a joke and i rarely use it!
As for recovery, look for me "I F'ed UP" thread. you loose everything, but you get your phone back!

Assuming you are still on 2.3.4 and not 2.3.5 you can use mofs rom. Its generally a stock rom but you'll get 1080p camera, some bug fixes, notification bar toggles and much less lag. You'll just need to root, install bootstrap recovery, and flash it.

It was a leak, we need a new leak from Motorola, this was not a hack at all so we can't just reuse something.
First of all, THANK YOU everyone for taking some time to answer every question. I really appreciate it. I have been reading, and reading for hours...my eyes are starting to bleed.
So... there is NO WAY we can get a better Android than the 2.3.5?
My build number says 4.5.1A_SUN_USC_19.0, that means I cannot unlock the bootloader, isn't it?
Is there another way (hack?) to improve the performance of the cellphone? I have root it, just to change some files I couldn't, e.g. the sound of the camera.
And finally... is it THAT bad being stucked on 2.3.5?

The reason I was asking if I was stuck on 2.3.5 was regarding to my build number. I don't know how to conclude it's an ota or not.
You can attempt the Pudding Bootloader unlock, it is unlikely to succeed, but it may be possible. You do risk bricking the device though.

Unlocked bootloader
Well, it appears that I am still the only Photon owner around with 2.3.5 and an unlocked bootloader. Unfortunately mine was some sort of freak accident that it happened. I can run run custom recovery and flash all day long. Unfortunately if I install a ROM with any other version (or maybe it's the kernal) it will not work. It will boot up fine but nothing will connect at all. I've tried almost all of them........
