Ok I just got a white evo 3d as my back up phone and I want to root it. Ive been looking at the development page at all the (how to root) forums and It looks like the 1.50 cant be rooted right now. So i wanted to know...
1. Is it true that the 1.50 is not rootable at the moment?
2. I work at a sprint repair center if I flash one of the older shooter softwares will that make it say 1.3 or 1.4, and eventually allow me to root?
3. Is there anyone trying to develop a root solution for the 1.50?
This is pretty much my questions for now any answers are greatly appreciated, Im currently on a Nexus S and im staying on it untill Iget the 3d rooted so I can at least use wifi tether.

1. Search around, there is a way but you can only load roms using fastboot and some dos trickery, its a pain right now
2.Yes, I would do this if you can, the 1.4 root is easier IMO.
3. Like I said there is one its just not the optimum solution yet.
HTC's method works and is not that big of a pain once set up. I can begin flashing a ROM in less than a minute and have also flashed kernels and have never had a problem. I updated to the new twrp last night and all is well. Make sure you understand and follow all of the set up steps. Link below.

Oh and WiFi tether will work too depending on your Rom. I'm on cleanrom de and it is fully, functional, smooth, and fast.
Yeah its really not that big of a deal once you have your phone rooted. You can also use this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16808235#post16808235 if you want to install ClockworkMod Recovery. This writeup is a little more detailed and walks you through it step by step. TWRP Recovery is my preferred recovery but you can flash that once you get everything setup.
I prefer to use Amon Ra recovery over clockwork mod. Does the Evo 3d have that option?
Ok so when i got into work i looked on here and saw that there are roots for the 1.50. I guess waking up so early my eyes were not adjusting to myu comp screen and i didnt see it lol, but i appriciate all you guys help and input. I will attempt this as soon as sprint can fix my ESN in the system got the phone and the esn was never put into the data base wtf? so Im waiting for the email with the ok to activate.

Unfortunately no, there isn't a way to downgrade. HTC makes it so you can't downgrade the bootloader (unless you were S-off). The RUU would error out at the bootloader, and tell you 'main version older' or something like that. You could use the HTC 'unlock' method and flash a recovery, but you'd still be S-on, and won't be able to flash kernels. If I were in your situation, I'd probably just hang tight for a little while and wait and see if revolutionary gets updated (because it's said that they're in the process of working on the 1.5hboot).
Yeah I just ran thru the HTC Dev unlock already. Back everything up, and flashed the recovery. I think I will try out the cleanrom for now and see if anything happens. I been up too long and I am delirious lol. Thank you for your reply. Hopefully I didn't screw anything else up hah.

RSD is a Motorola term. Just putting it out there. For HTC, it's called an RUU.

Just an Update
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224781
Here is an update on unlocked bootloader for 1.50 Hboot.
Confirmed it says unlocked, but seems to be some issues with s-on s-off. I was able to get recovery flashed. Now I am trying to flash cleanrom atm. As we speak booting to cleanrom. Booted...no issues thus far. Running great. Now I will try a different kernel and see if that works.
I am having a hard time with getting my voicemails sent to my evo3d as a notification for a new message.. this has been a prob for sometime now and I've always just thought that I never had ne voicemails or perhaps I haven't set up my voicemail account right or at all just yet when come to find out yesterday I had 33 msgs exceeding my inbox n lost em all.. never once had I got the notifications or alerts for any of em though. Can any one assist me in fixing this issue please? I've alrdy tried calling CricKet and having them reset my voicemail services n that didn't seem to werk either. So far that's as far as I got. Also, I can't seem to get the thumbnail photos of my contacts to show in the messaging app or whatever, not even as i am in the current conversation with sumone.. it just shows the blank pic. And they show in my contacts book/app just fine. How do I go about fixing this as well? Thanks in advance.. oh yea lemme give yu detail on my phones details to further help with the assistance. I am currently running "joeykrim's original 1.2.0 Odex" ROM which I had gottn off ROM Manager and flashed over using TWRP's 1.3 Recovery .. I might also add that i am with CricKet's slow ass service running on PRL #45512 in Colorado. And yes this ROM is the latest updated version of 2.3.4... If need more info or even a descent screenshot of my settings or info on device and image of the problems I'm having I can also provide upon request..
Sorry if this ain't the place for this question but I have searched evrywhere n did my part in th research n read rule alrdy n have found nuthn what so ever related to my concerns so please don't gimme the ol look around speech please... Thanks much in advance .. KaeDee. Please email me @ [email protected] or contact me private message with helpful or useful info thanks again..

Nah we were in this situation for awhile with the Incredible. Nand unlock or s-off lets you flash radios and hboot. . It also sticks through most updates for instance those who had s-off before the 1.5 update are able to go back if they want and are able to root without using htc unlock.
what you get with the htc unlock is a permanent root that allows custom recovery and roms. not sure about kernels as I have read conflicting posts. as always your best bet is to read up in the forums before accepting any updates from htc.
any updates fellow members security -off for the new hboot version ?

I unlocked through the HTC unlock . Its correct that it doesnt allow you to get S-Off , but from my expierence flashing on the 3D is as follows . If you enter fastboot through CMD screen and fire up recovery through CMD it flashes everything . I have flashed several different roms in the past week . Boot animations change , Kernels change everything changes . Now I have not tried to flash radios and so forth . That may still be locked out I am not sure from personal expierence . I only went the HTC unlock way , mainly due to getting a new job and now getting a discount through verizon . I may (Keyword MAY) jump ship to Verizon only due to coverage issues and the Droid Prime . For the time being the coverage issues I can deal with . Also most of my family is on verizon . But back to the main point . Most of the functions that I had with S-Off I am still able to do as long as I start up recovery through CMD prompt . I have a feeling HTC did this intentionally . My theories on it is , by forcing users to go through the command promt . It "kinda" weeds out the users that know what they are doing from the ones that don't. Yes its easy to get around it and now isnt so much a problem to flash through cmd and most anyone will eventually find the way to do so . But that is how the internet works , information is passed even faster than before and like all information . The ones who really shouldnt mess with it will get access to it and others who know what they are doing have it . When I mean by users that shouldnt have access I mean the ones who have no clue what a Kernel is and just flash things to flash things and end up with a nice paperweight . Im by no means a hardcore hacker or power user , but I do spend several nights reading as much as I can and asking the correct questions before I proceed with anything on my phone since its my only form of communication (no home phone).
I unfortunately dropped my phone this last weekend and shattered the screen. I still have it (probably for only another day) and it still works. Is there any way to use this rooted, s-off, busted phone to get s-off on my new phone that came installed with 1.5?

All that's required is that you have access to torq drivers, and have careful hands to handle ribbon cables, and youre good to go! But being 3D when u replace the screen it's not just the glass digitizer, its a whole unit and I think its even easier to replace
What is this?
Does anyone know what this is or who is developing it?

It's yousefAK....duh....
I will call balderdash on this, as he only made a video of the GUI, which could easily be cobbled together in about 20 min. The video was uploaded over a month ago (Oct 1), and is "in development". I'm thinking the exploit referred in the description either:
A. Never existed
B. Didn't work like the vid owner anticipated
Even the yousefAK offers this response, from 3 weeks ago (around Oct 21):
"Use HTC's unlock and flash TWRP 1.1. Then flash the SU files and you have permanent root. The only thing is that you will have to flash kernels through fastboot"
Anybody know when the new revolutionary 1.5 hboot update is being released? I bought my phone from Best Buy and the sales rep took it upon herself to update my phone for me. HTC's way is gay and I'd rather wait.

haven't seen anything posted yet. the best places to contact (or be in contact with) revolutionary is their irc channel on freenode, #revolutionary.
it will be interesting to see how they approach supporting the later version, i.e. whether they completely replace the bootloader or exploit htc's unlock method.
we all anxiously await!
Appreciate it. I've been searching for a week now.

htc method works for me. its a little annoying to flash a rom (need to do fastboot boot recovery to flash it) but it's still full root and stuff.
the title is a bit misleading. and I hope it breaks through soon
i just got my fone off of ebay today. it was already updated. guess im dead in the water for now
I used HTC's method to unlock and get root, I am on 2.5 and updated as well because my first intentions for the phone was not to root it, and now I am kicking my ass for updating to 1.50 Hboot. But either way, here is how HTC's method has worked for me in case any of you are thinking about doing it and wondering if it is worth the trouble. Yes, it is worth the trouble. Instructions and time to do it all in all wasn't even that bad in my opinion, and now at least I can flash roms (which I have been doing a lot this past week back and fourth). However I want a pure AOSP rom, with pretty much NOTHING sense, no sense dialer apk, contacts apk, evo stock messaging apk... a lot of the "AOSP" roms out there now still have some of these things that I have tried. So basically I want CM 7, cuz that's the best AOSP rom I have ever used... and I downloaded the Alpha build from Toast, but it requires S-OFF.. which doing HTC's method does not turn S-OFF... so it makes me sad So hopefully this gets kickin soon!

I had no idea HTC forces two or more men to engage in sexual acts just to get the boot loader unlocked. That is just not right!

Here are the instructions I went to and followed and worked just fine. the website requires you to create an account before you view the goodness, but of course that is free. Other than that, you just need to download a few things; one being the HTC Sync program, and a couple of Zip files, but after you do that, follow the instructions and you'll be good to go! Need any other help please don't hesitate, feel free to ask!

I did the HTC 1.5 "rooting" method successfully.
My problem now is that adb won't recognize my phone when I'm in fastboot (trying to flash ROM/Kernal). If I'm in the ROM it recognizes it, if I'm in recovery it recognizes it, when I did the 1.5 "root" it recognized it.
However when I get to the point of trying to fastboot into recovery it doesn't see it using the "adb devices" command.
I've tried reinstalling SDK several times, I've tried reinstalling the USB drivers several times, I've tried all of it on two different computers (one xp, one windows seven), debugging is allowed and fast boot is not checked.
This is a problem for flashing ROMs AND Kernals obviously.
Any ideas?

that's because you need to use fastboot, not adb, when you're in fastboot. google htc fastboot drivers g1. they're for the g1 but work fine for all other htc phones. put it in the same directory as adb. and the command is
fastboot devices
so yeah, there's your problem

Team Revolutionary has already the patch.. i presume they're working on it and they'll release soon but there's no ETA .. we're on the same boat .. HBOOT 1.49.0011 and 1.50 same exploit tool i guess..
My advice to all - is to wait for team rev's update!

Hey guys,
So with the recent hboot downgrade option, it seems like it's finally time to root my virgin 3VO, but I need a little help at least with some big picture stuff.
I know that with the HTC unlock, the device is wiped. By doing the hboot downgrade that doesn't seem to be the case. Is it possible to downgrade hboot, get s-off, unlock and then do a nandroid backup of my current phone setup?
In the downgrade instructions, you are supposed to run revolutionary in the final steps, but I'm fuzzy on what this tool does versus some of the other tools like TWRP2 (htcdumblock?) or HTCSupertoolv3. Could somebody give me a quick rundown on these, and if I will need them?
In the hboot downgrade video I watched, the device has a 2.08 RUU on it, while I have the latest OTA 2.17. Will that cause any issues? I've downloaded both the hbootdowngrade toolkit, as well as RUU_Shooter_S_Sprint_WWE_2.17.651.5_Radio_1.06.00.1216_NV_NV_spcs_1.42_release_233304_signed.exe
I should probably mention my intentions too... I'd like to get a stock backup to revert to (my current config if possible), then try out some ROMs (maybe MeanROM to start) and chad's latest 2.17 kernel.
MUCH appreciated!

Okay, so despite being stuck in a boot loop, apparently the tacoroot temp root was successful. I was able to push the other commands to get mainver: 1.10.651.2
My problem is, that because it wont actually boot, I can't back up my apps with Titanium. Do I have any other options?

I haven't gone thru this whole downgrade process, I've only done step 3 in order to unbrick my phone from something unrelated, but I know enough to tell you that you're already past the point that you can backup your apps/ROM. You need to keep going thru the instructions for downgrading your hboot til you're completely done and your phone's booted up. If you decided to check the box when you first set your phone up for "keeping this device backed up with Google" (paraphrasing here), then once you set up ANY sense ROM, as long as you have that option enabled as you go thru the setup process, once you click on play store/market, your phone will automatically start downloading all the apps you previously had on your phone.

I'll try to answer some of your questions, but I'm no pro.
I made a backup right before I downgraded so I didn't lose any info, but it sounds like you're past that point.
Revolutionary will get you "s-off", its the only thing that will give you that, that's the point of downgrading. Dumlock is for hboot 1.5 users. Once you downgrade, you won't need it.
2.17 will be fine, that's what I was on.
At the point you're at, either you can turn back now and run the 2.08, 2.17 ruu.exe from hboot, or if you're not scared, then its time for you to brick.
I suggest getting all your terminals to the "waiting for device" state before you brick. Just so you know that won't be an issue because once you brick there's no turning back.

PLEASE HELP AND SORRY IF I SOUND WAY TO SUPER NOOBY
by the way here is all my phone info
Go to HTCDev.com
Unlock your bootloader (DON'T run the ruu)
Find and flash a recovery (I use TWRP, 4EXT is also a very good choice)
In the dev forum, find a stock, rooted ICS rom (Virus has one posted)
Flash it
Get S-off using "juopunutbear"'s wire trick method (go to "unlimited.io")
Flash Freeza's firmware for HBOOT 1.40
All done
I was in much the same boat as you a few months ago. The best advice I can give you is to read like crazy, three or more write ups before you do any thing. Also read the posts after the main write ups for common problems.
I would also suggest the htcdev unlock first. They have a good guide on their site. It will also help build your confidence. =).
Find video walk throughs on YouTube, on any thing you want to do too. In short there is a lot of resources out there and a strong community of people who love what open source is all about, that want you to love it too.
Post.Script. doing the wire trick for s-off is scary, but it really does work.
Happy modding!

Hey All. I Did my first flash ever with my Evo3d and the Viper Rom way back when it first came out. With the Rev tool to get unlock and S off. Now Ive had to have my phone replaced due to a bad digitizer and id like some ICS fun. But the Phone is now Hboot 1.50. Ive had Ramjet explain some stuff but still having some confusion. I did the HTC unlock and the phone is unlocked. I now need to install/flash 4EXT recovery. I assume this is something I need to flash to the bootloader/Fastboot Vs just a download (which I did get the paid for app.) Ive been r4eading some of the stuff here and there. But still a little lost. Then I guess I need to root? then I can S off? Sorry for the dumb questions and being noob about this. Just wanting to learn/relearn the right ways. I know once I see it I can handle it just fine. Thanks for the help.

I'm actually on a sprint based cdma phone.
Have you looked at the HTC Unlock Guide (also in my signature)? Post 4 I think covers flashing the recovery & SU correctly.
- once unlocked, use fastboot commands to push the the recovery.img to the phone, boot to recovery and flash SU. Reboot.= Htc Unlocked stock rooted rom. (Note: there is also a link to the hboot differences thread you should read after getting s-Off).
Then you can use Jbear to get S-Off for Gingerbread/2.17 base.
MeanRom 2.6
Thanks mpgrimm
Id really like to end up with ICS is the direction im heading but im sure that will help. Thanks!! May have some further questions. Hope thats all right?
Sure thing. I haven't done the Jbear Wire Trick (I did the hboot 1.50 downgrade) but I can point you where to go.
