Hi guys,
I was wondering if there was a quick way to enter calendar entries using the built in voice function in this android smartphone. I see the microphone icon on the homescreen I can use commands like "Call bob" and so forth, but is there a command for calendar entries like "Calendar saturday wash car" or something?
I tried a search and looking here:
http://www.google.com/mobile/voice-actions/
All I found were apps but I'm not sure if they use a completely different calendar (I want to keep it in google calendar)
thanks!
Actually GS2 comes with Samsung Voice Talk/Vlingo installed. It has more commands than what Google offers. You can activate it many different ways. Double tap Home button is one of such way. I tested today and I was able to create memo entry quite easily. Not sure about calendar entry but I think it maybe possible.

I really like the fact google contacts sync up with the phone & are phone independent, is there any way of making your normal contacts become google ones or an app to do it?
many thanks
If you set your phone up with a Google account then by default all your contacts will be synced with Google. Most mobile phones offer a facility to export the address book, often via MS Outlook which can then be further exported to Google and from there propagate to your phone.
I set it up with a google login first time I used it. The google contacts sync up fine but the rest of the contacts listed as 'phone' dont sync to google.
So what I was hoping is I can change the type from phone to google in the contacts listing then edit them on my computer & sync them back to the phone?
One other question does the google sync work both directions? Facebook images don't seem to appear in gmail?
Yes and yes. Make sure that the contacts are set as 'Google' and it should all work
Unfortunately after setting up some "Phone" contacts you cannot edit them and save as "Google" - or am I missing something?
And BTW, I'd like to ask people who are actually syncing their contacts and using Google Contacts as their primary source whether they suffer from the fact that Gmail adds all the email addresses that they had a conversation with as a new contact. Is that actually an issue?

that's exactly what I'm trying to do with no luck. New contacts I will set to google but I imported a load from my sim (150) which are all set to 'phone'
Another problem I had with the calendars, if you set them to only be google it doesn't change the new entry type from 'phone' so I put load of appointments in & couldn't see them which totally threw me. Luckily it does remember the type you set but it should change the default type when you set the view!
no, you cant change the contact type once it has been set. you'll need to delete them and create/import them as google contacts.
when in people and you press menu import, select google to import to the google list. that way they sync up automatically.
If you can't be bothered deleting all the ones in phone, just hide them...on the people list, press menu and select view, only tick google and voila, all the others are hidden.
to stop google from synching all the email addresses as well, go into people, go to the groups tab, press menu and select sync groups.
tick only 'My contacts'
problem solved.
thanks for the reply rhedgehog

I can only select "Sync all contacts" and a couple of groups I created - no option for "My contacts".
strange, i get it, and it should be there as it is a standard google contacts group....
There is an app on the market called ContactSync can help you with this. It's free.
tsekh501>> Worked like a charm, cheers mate
I wonder if anyone can help me. My contacts were stored as 14 on Google and 76 on 'phone'. I used the contactsync app and it said all contacts successfully synced to google. On my contacts list they all have 'Google' next to them.
The problem is, when i log into my google account on my pc I only have 14 contacts listed? Am i missing something here or is there something wrong?
PS - just to add, when i go to menu- settings - data sync - google - sync settings on my Hero, when i tick/untick contacts to try and force it to update i get a 'Sorry The process android.process.acore has stopped......Force close.
Bump! Anyone?
Getting the same problem... Running MCR 2.0...
Odd one this, and I only get the error message when I set the phone to sync my contacts.
Anyone wanna bid in on this one?
Bad idea?

Tried this advice, and even threw in a reboot after running the ContactSync app. Got the same error-message. Has anyone completed this successfully?
I've been having the same problems- first the change only showing on the hero- and now the random crashes?
I since backed up my contacts to sd with exportcontacts (free on the market) as .csv and then uploaded them to my gmail via my pc.
Strangely, when I did, both copies of the contacts showed up online and I had to manually delete the second copy of each. I know it was both copies as i'd sorted them all into groups after using contact sync and the groups showed only on one of each contact.
Slight feature missing with the new Modaco rom. Did anybody use the feature where you could sync only certain groups in your contacts? This feature was present in the old firmware but is now missing.
Before you could go to People > Groups > Menu > Sync groups and the select the groups you only wanted to sync. This is not present with the new version. Also I can't seperate Google contacts as well. Annoying change for those who sync their contacts with Google.

Similar experience. However, I experienced an additional difficulty when importing the .csv file to gmail. When it imported the fields was all messed up. I tried to edit it in excel, but didn't get it to work. Quite a hassle, this. Wish they could have streamlined it just a tad more
So far with the 2.1 roms I have tried to sync my contacts that are not part of google contacts without success.
There seems to be no way of getting the option to make a contact a google contact if it is not already so.
I tried the ap loaded kindly on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5879272&postcount=6763 - which call contactsync (as above post)
but it doesn't work - saying something about the database being wrong.
Is this something that the chef's can make available in their roms (a hidden menu - or a menu option that could be put into contacts/people app) ? I think it's something HTC just overlooked when they created the app.
I'm starting this thread to help anyone who might come after me in the same situation.
Background:
I have an iPhone 4 which I am very happy with except for the screen size. I live on my phone and just got tired of the small screen.
I decided to go with the Streak because it's got a nice big screen.
I use MobileMe for cloud synching of contacts and calendar with Outlook.
It's an amazing service. I can lose my iPhone, walk into a store, buy a new one, type in my MobileMe info and be back in business by the time I walk out of the store.
Calendar has time zone support. So when I travel my appts get shifted correctly.
So I am looking to recreate this on the Android Platform.
Okay. day two of migration to android from iOS.
i decided that i need to split the task of getting my contacts into google in two parts.
first, get all my contacts there, then worry about cloud synching.
first tried to do an export from outlook to a csv but outlook doesn't keep the iPhone custom fields, so they would have gone into google without my custom fields. also, the csv doesn't preserve contact pics.
discovered that you can tell itunes to sync the iphone with google contacts. i wiped out all my contacts from google and told itunes to sync with google. voila, all my contacts appeared in google with all my custom fields and pics. It seems with this option, MobileMe begins synching with Google Contacts instead of Outlook.
Now to find a cloud sync solution for google contacts/calendar with Outlook.
And I still haven't moved my SIM over to the Streak. lol
I recommend streakdroid.com
check out dj_steves froyo based os for the streak... very fast!
Since u already have ur contacts and calendar in the google cloud, you dont need any app to sync google contacts and calendar with your phone. It happens automatically just as iphone syncs with mobile me.
good point. what I meant is a solution to sync the google contacts with outlook via the cloud. i would still prefer to have a local client with a copy of my contacts.
that way I have control over that data. i back it up both to second drive and in the process of setting up offsite backup over the internet.
i'm still paranoid that google might wipe out all my contacts in the cloud and then sync that to the device. there was an article about flicker the other day where they wiped out years of this guys pictures. Eventually they recovered them, but he must have been on Tums for a few days. lol
you can always access your contacts and calendar through google web client and backup from there

Update. Everything is working fine. Have found android versions, or equivalent apps for most of my iphone apps. Still haven't tried a outlook contacts to google contacts sync option.
I have to say the most disappointing part about android is the keyboard. didn't realize how nice the iphone keyboard was. have tried several different keyboards but none match the iphone keyboard. using the gingerbread keyboard for now. the swype keyboard layout is great because it uses big keys, but it doesn't do automatic punctation on the double space bar press and constantly completes too many of my sentences with unwanted words.
Otherwise, the transition hasn't been that bad. I like that I've been able to do everything without rooting it so far. Only reason to root it now seems to be to get the reboot function. The notification system is a clear winner over the iphone notifications.
slocko,
There are a lot of replacement keyboards available for Android. I like Ultra Keyboard because almost everything about it can be customized. It allows fine cursor control, and it uses swipe or tapping for input. Youtube Video.
This version of the Gingerbread keyboard works well and the key size can be configured for both portrait and landscape mode.
Thumb Keyboard will allow you to use a split keyboard in landscape and a 'normal' keyboard in portrait. More Info
Here is the original Dell Android 1.6 keyboard modded to work with Android 2.2.
My favorite swipe type keyboard was SlideIt before I tried Ultra keyboard. SlideIt actually has better accuracy and word prediction then Ultra, but Ultra has other features I like.
Of course if you need to type a lot the Streak will work with a bluetooth keyboard.
Really liking Thumb Keyboard. Only thing missing is Spanish Language.

Hello,
I have an unbranded German S II. Since updating to Android 4.0.3 (through Samsung Kies), the standard calendar widget doesn't work like it used to anymore.
I synchronize with my Google account where I have multiple different calendars for different purposes (work, freetime, projects, etc.). On my phone I can go into the calendar app's configuration and tick the boxes of those calendars I want to have synchronized and shown. It used to work like that and I could make it so that only my work appointments would be shown on the calendar widget on my homescreen.
Now, after updating to ICS, the calendar widget will show all calendars at all times, rendering it less useful. No amount of fiddling with the properties has corrected this. After asking in two other forums, this is my last hope.
I really hope somebody here knows the problem and might be able to help. Or is this really just me? Thanks in advance!
I don't have a direct answer to your question, but if the stock calendar widget isn't behaving how you'd like it to, there's a Play Store brimming with alternatives. I'm sure at least one will function in the way you're hoping.
Yeah, I know. I don't need any fancy, skinnable, customizable calendar apps that fill the android market. I'd rather have the stock widget that just does what I want it to. Seeing as this worked fine before the update, I hoped there was something I could do. Alas, seems as if that is not the case. Thanks though
Hello, i have exactly the same problem. Did you find any solution ?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
It's good to hear someone finally acknowledging the problem. I was starting to question my sanity as it seems that out of millions of owners of the SII only I have the problem. Finally someone else speaks up, thank you for that
Sadly, I have not found a solution since. I completely changed the way I organize my events in google calendar. It's not as well organized as it was before but it gets the job done. Still, I would prefer if the calendar worked like it did before...
If you don't want to redo your whole google calendar organization, I guess you could indeed try a third party calendar. The play store is full of calendar apps; I was overwhelmed, because I just want a simple and clean calendar, like the stock one.

When you select the widget, you should be prompted to select which calaendar to display. If it doesn't, check out this alternative widget. You can still use your default calendar, but use this widget instead of the stock:

Hi,
I recently changed my phone, and find this annoying. In kitkat, contacts app shows every contact, even if you only have that contacts email, it shows. So I find it quite unuseful to use it.
In the Dialer, you've got All Contacts button, where only contacts with phone number are showed. And here's the question. Is there any way to make a direct link to that? I mean an icon, like if it was another app in your desktop, you tap it, and contacts appear.
I know it's just to save one tap, but the button is so damn small!!
Thanks.
Just joined Google Fi. Is there any way to add "messages" to the google apps button?
Title says it all. I just left Google Voice for Google Fi and ported my GV number over.
Minor thing, but I miss having the function in gmail when I click on the google apps, then google voice, then it launches to web interface. I can't seem to find a similar setup for the messages for web app. Does this exist?
I realize I'm just lazy, but would be nice to have!
