[Q] App that Measure amount of Gloss? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Thanks in advance to anybody that may be able to help me out. I'm wanting to create an app that uses a phones camera and maybe flash to measure the amount of gloss on something. I'm wanting to make this app for personal projects I work on and don't have a gloss meter. So What I'm wondering, how exactly would I go about using the camera to do this.
I have a small amount of knowledge on android software development, but I'd consider myself a beginner. I'm going to school for Computer Engineering, so I know a lot of the basics, just need help on the starting direction.
I'm thinking that there should be a way to use the camera's flash to reflect the gloss and have a way to measure the amount of shine on whatever it is you're trying to test. Any ideas are welcomed, along with why it would never work if someone believes that. Thanks again for any help!

so you`re looking for an App that tells you if your LipGloss looks good on you
you could try to get the "gloss-factor" by having the app measure the diameter of the flash-reflection (how bis is the (mostly white) diameter)
another way could be to put a black-white squared or striped pattern under the thing ( if it is transparent) and let the app measure how much darker the black is (when flash is on something dark it becomes bright, whight is already white)

My own Developer's battery door //Update 8-17 Etched member designs on pg8

So at work I have a laser etching machine that is all computer controlled and when I'm bored I mess around with it trying to figure out what types of things I haven't etched and what kind of cool art I can etch on to stuff. Lately I've been testing the Android Developer's battery door design, and attached is what I've come up with.
For higher res pics goto http://picasaweb.google.com/juphro/batterydoor and make sure to click the "zoom in" magnifying glass.
I'm also in the process of testing the other battery door colors.
Member, baggus, actually asked me if I could try the design on his so that's why his name is on the bottom. It turned out very nice! I wanted to also see something in the Android font so that's what I came up with in the second pic in the next post. NOTE: the Android font is *not* able to be copied commercially, I have done so for my own personal use.
More information about the Android robot remixing can be found at http://www.android.com/branding.html and a supposed vector of the Android robot can be found at http://www.android.com/media/android_vector.jpg
Did you know the Android robot can be modified and reproduced freely?
If you are interested in designing your own art for a battery door or interested in how its done, just pm me
How the process works:
-Design your custom image (either png w/transparent background or vector graphic works best)
-Image must be black and white. Laser turns on for black, turns off for white.
-Make sure your image looks good on the battery door w/o resizing. Resizing causes distortion if it is not a vector. PM for the template if you're interested in actually doing this.
-Import the image into the etching program on the template which has been premeasured.
-Instead of printing to a inkjet, the image prints to an Epilog Laser Engraver
The template is too large of a file size for me to upload, so again, just pm me.
A laser shoots down on the battery door literally vaporizing a thin layer of material. How the laser cuts is based on speed an power settings determined by the operator. Each material (rubber, wood, aluminum, plastic, etc) has its own settings based on the speed an power of the laser. I have the settings for almost any material, have tested the speed and power for the G1 finally and strangely enough, the settings are different for the white G1 battery door (J Treat is donating his).
Normally, its $45 for regular customers but since I'm in charge of the machine (and personally own a G1) I would much rather charge $20. Free UPS return shipping if you live in the states. Add $3.50 for USPS international shipping. PM me for details.
Design Ideas
More pics- battery door from white G1. No custom designs on this color, sorry. Banding starts to occur in areas that have large spaces (banding example pics can be found on page 5. Its also not as smooth. Same thing happens when you print photos on a non photo printer, on non photo paper. I am also unable to etch on the curved parts of this color. It just comes out nasty/burnt lookin.
Again- designs are limited for the white G1.
Some people have asked about covering the "With Google." Without actually modifying Android Guy this is how big he would have to be to cover the words- his body is exactly as big as the words. It takes up almost the whole back.
Again, pls goto my Picasa site (above) to view more pics in original size. Other things I've etched -> http://picasaweb.google.com/team1933/lasers
Thats kinda cool. Its amazing what you can do with the right equipment.
if you do the battery door that comes on a white g1, im only a paypal click away from ordering one (seriously)
good job man, they look nice
Wow! really nice.....
yeah, let me know how i can get one made with my name please.
send me a message plz! those look F'n COOL!
Me to fellow Chicago friend!
I hate you for showing me a really cool mod for my phone that i can't do myself >:|
O well... next best thing......BUTTERKNIFE
(seriously though that looks amzing. i wish i had a laser etcher laying around)
WOW!
Thanks guys!! I'm waiting for a white g1 battery door to arrive (its like a tan color). The black one uses different settings so I have to tweak it so that it comes out right every time. When I get it just right I'll post more pics in the first thread and get you guys some more info about it.
@G1-evolve, wootroot, and regulatorg1: you got pm.
i'd probably jump on something like this too if i could get my name on it, it looks sweet
You know what would be really awesome.. is to fill in those desings with paint to give them some color. I just may have to order one to see if I can do it.
I am liking how they are looking. Most def if you get some going for the brown backing I am all aboard for this mod

I have seen color laser etchings that use a so called "color bonding" process but I have yet to see it done.
If you can etch a picture of Taylor Swift into it, ill pay.
looking sweet
i like the android guy, it would by cool if you could through an on his chest and give him a cape! LOL!
only thing that would suck on my phone is that i have the silver/tan or whatever backing on mine and im sure it would be a crazy dirt and grime magnet where its etched out.
you figure out a pricing amount and method? should i pm you for this? does it really matter if you post up a price on this thread?
also i saw on the previous post where you got started up that it wasn't lined up correctly on the silver/tan back, you got that figured out right?
I might have to get one done from you and fill in the etched part with some clear coat or something maybe even a bronze finish to go with the phone
you should buy a heap of battery doors off the net and then do custom desighns for people and sell them with like 20% profit or sumthing.
also would it be possible for you to upload template for the sketch?

I remeasured my template, and on every battery door that gets done the "with google" gets measured again after putting the battery door in the machine. Spending the extra 5mins to double check is worth not wasting a battery door. Will edit first post w/price.
@MiNdAr: the template is too large of a file size to attach but I'd be more than happy to email it.
im still working on my design, ill be shipping you my battery door probably monday or tuesday to have for when i get the design finished, glad you decided to share this service with the community man
its 2:45pm and the mail man just came and left me a brown little package outside my door!
Just wanna let everyone know that I just got my custom battery door and its looking FREAKEN NICE!
has the dev. theme on the back with my xda id on the bottom..
and it took 3days to get here after speaking with justin.
great work and i'll prob be ordering another one with different styles later on.

Looking for photoshop help for custom wallpaper

Hey there everyone. So, I'm wanting to make this wallpaper. I can see it in my head, but I don't have enough experience in Photoshop or GIMP to make it come to life yet. I've been playing around with GIMP, but have only had it for a couple of days. I've done some reading and messed around with it a bit, but without some serious help present, this is just outside my expertise. I want to combine these three things -
1) Gothamesque Cityscape: http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/4691870612/
Scaled to 640 x 480 (I can do this part, it's easy...)
2) GOTHAM Banner:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/4691238235/
Scaled to 640 x 80(the 640 is a must, but the 80 is open to your judgement)
I can do this part too, but blending is not part of my skill set yet.
3)Hoping to get a Bat Symbol, or Signal on the "O" for GOTHAM. I don't really have as much preference on this part, as long as it fits the color scheme.
The lights that are beaming from the city to the sky hits the "O" pretty much in the middle. Was hoping to use that idea to illuminate the symbol that is going to be covering the "O" for a bat signal type theme.
Here is a super rough draft idea of steps 1 & 2 so you can kind of get a feel of where I want to go-
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/4691909852/
So, that's it. Anyone willing to help a brother out? You'll receive my eternal gratitude and/or I'd be willing to make you a custom boot animation in return(providing it's from a video - that's all I have experience with at the moment). Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks in advance!
Here ya go, let me know if it sucks. I just threw it together, if you need anything changed feel free to ask
Awww man, that is like 95% of the way to what I was looking for! If I had to be nitpicky, I would just like the symbol to cover that hint of black on the left of it and was thinking of maybe adding a bit of glow to it? I know in GIMP they call it Alien Glow, or maybe just making it look a bit more like the light from underneath is why that part is brighter than the rest of the letters. I hope that makes sense? I really like how you integrated the Gotham in the sky - keeping the same colors but it's still visible. Very appreciative, I am. I'm in the middle of posting my Batman boot animation (with a preview) on the Gallery thread. Check it out!
this should be better, let me know.
Looks great man! Thank you so much Going on my phone now, with my new Batman boot screen and animation. I gonna play around and make some icons soon. I think I should be able to handle doing those. I can handle cropping, scaling, rendering kind of things, just not blending and lighting effects yet. Thanks again!
Just giving it a shot.
Nice work Now, if I could just combine the best of both worlds there...lol I like the GOTHAM better on the first one and the Bat symbol better on the other. No offense to either of you, of course. Unfortunately though, it doesn't look as good on my phone as it does on the computer. This is entirely my fault as I wasn't factoring in how it lays stretched out by the launcher and you don't see enough of it's glory on my home screen. I definitely am going to use it for a wallpaper on my regular PC though! Now, I'm playing around with the idea of just a Bat symbol (the newer one from the films that is just the bat itself - not the oval) in the middle of the sky, half way between the skyline and the top. This blended in a bit with the transparent clock widget looks cool because then it's modern gothic looking Bat clock. Thanks for your efforts though, they will be put to good use, some how

[Q] Any good light lockscreens?

Hi,
i think samsung couldn't make a cheaper looking lockscreen, it's so ugly. Why not just have a simple and elegant slider just as any other phone. Why do you need to move the whole darn screen. It blows my mind.
I see that there are a few lockscreens on the market, and I have tried a few of them, even bought some, widgetlocker. But what I see is that most of them are 2nd place in battery consumption, more than any other app, and I think it's totally unnecesary to have something that is so simple use so many battery.
So my question is if there is any lockscreen that is just light. Or even better, can't you just edit this one slightly, is there no flash available to do that.
Hope someone can help.
Oh I found one solution, but maybe there is a better one. The one I found is this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=779803
I use Ripple Lock and I don't have any complaints about the battery consumption.
I think it's much easier to move the whole screen than just a slide to unlock. Imagine u driving and that you want to look at something in your phone(although i don't recommend doing that). It's much easier to simply slide the screen whatever direction you want without having to be carefull (and to be distracted from the road)to "hit" the only, small portion that represent the slide unlocker. Just a thought.
I'm much happier with "the whole screen" method than the other.

[Q] Screen Color Temperature

While using my Tablet throughout the last month, one thing has really been bugging me. The screen seems to be very yellow. Rather than showing white screens as white, they're off-white, greys look a bit darker and greener than they should. The color temperature of the screen is very warm, and it bugs me. Anyone else experience this? Or do I just have a bad screen?
Better question, does anyone know of a fix for this? I'm hoping it's not a hardware problem, but a software one.
Try taking a screenshot ("n" + volume down) of this and let us look at it. I'm guessing if its yellow to us as well, its s software issue. If not, its likely a hardware issue.
Judging by your screen temp, early guess its a hardware problem, but lets see what the screencap shows.

There is app called Screen Adjuster that you can grab from the market. It will allow you to change the color of the screen. I use it for night reading tobreduce the blue.
Just remember to disable it when installing apps. Otherwise the install button will be disabled.
Alright, so I grabbed a screenshot and sent it to my Droid X, which has a totally neutral color warmth, and the shot looked perfect. That's a little depressing, but still, something tells me that it has to do with the stock B&N, cause I know Google did something like this with the Nexus S for "enhanced contrast" or something like that.
I know this is probably wishful thinking, but I'd still like to believe there's a way to fix this.
Also, I tried Screen Adjuster, but it doesn't seem to fix the problem. It seems to just put a filter over the screen.
There was a thread about the color temprature early on in the life of this forum. The OP is a professional photographer and was bothered by the color balance of the NT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354639&highlight=warm .

Touche. I did try the fix listed in there, but it didn't work (for a number of reasons). The problem has essentially been ignored since then, so I'm assuming either it doesn't bother that many people, or I have a defective unit. That's why I'm asking if anyone else notices it.
Though now this thread does seem redundant..
Seems the NT is a bit more yellow than standard.

The Nook Tablet also has a very good factory display calibration. Its gray-scale is actually more accurate than most living room HDTVs. The White Point at 6,016K degrees is somewhat more yellowish than the 6,500K standard – that was most likely done in order to increase the screen’s maximum brightness, power efficiency, and battery run-time.

Quick Photoshop help?

I hope I'm allowed to post this here. I was just wondering if someone would be able to touch up this background for my Note. I just want the blue drips changed to a red, and the rest of the overall white background brightened up a bit so its more white than white/grey. I think this would look really nice with my white note.
Thanks so much in advance!
where's the pic?
??? Haha thanks. That's weird I even double checked I had it there when posting to avoid looking like an idiot. Fail..
here's a quick attempt
Thanks a lot.its not perfect but it looks better now and I certainty don't expect anyone to be putting in crazy amounts of effort into this for me. Just what I wanted aside from the bits off blue left over but I'm not a Photoshop expert so don't know if its even possible to get perfect.

http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/6374/fixed1u.jpg <---- Try that out. I couldn't sleep so I figured i'd give it a shot.
For the posts above me, there's no reason to redraw the drips. Just head into your hue/saturation menu and play with the cyan and blue sliders until you get a nice red color.
The first picture's me just playing with Curves to lighten up the image. I thought that made the emblem too bright, though, so I went ahead and masked the original and threw it on top for the second image.
Another really easy way to do this, is to go under image and select replace color
