[Q] Modding a Kernel to include BLN and External CWM? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im presently using Chainfires kernel and it doesn't support BLN (Backlight Notifications) out of the box, nor does it CWM module allow for it to save backups to the External SD card, but uses internal Storage instead.
So my question is:
Is it very hard to "simply" modify Chainfires kernel so that it does work with Backlight notifications, as well as modifying his CWM module so that it ONLY saves to the external SD. I want my backups on my SD card and not the internal NAND memory.
I have tried reaching out to him by requesting these 2 changes but so far has gone unheard so figured that if I really wanted something done, that I then "sadly" had to do it myself....
So can anyone shed some help or light on this please?

Does anyone know the answer?

I'd like to know the answer to this as well

To add bln you would need to build the kernel from source, once you do that it's not stock like, aka the point of cf root. Just chose a different kernel with bln built in.

External SD

Hey guys, search isn't working, so hoping for some help. Installed the GB 2.3.3 with Honeycomb elements. External SD card won't get recognized. I tried unmounting, but it isn't there. I also formatted, no go. Usually in root explorer it will say "sdcard" and "sdcard2" or something like that. Any one have this?
Is there a setting for hidden drive somewhere, this is a bit frustrating.
Install the latest nightly and pershoots latest kernel and both will mount fine. Internal is emmc and external is sdcard.

Even after you get the external SD card to show up you will still have this issue to contend with!

Thanks guys, mods, sorry for posting in wrong section.
Edit:
Does installing the nightly lay over Harmony, or replace it?

[Q] ROMs that don't require ext SDcard

Are there any current ROMs that don't require an external SDcard in the slot to download apps, etc?
[I tried the "cherry picks" ROM which already has the mounting points swapped, but an SD card was still required for dl'ing apps. Also the various hacks (e.g. persist.sys.vold.switchexternal=1, swapping mounting points...) on various ROMs from Succulent 10.0 - 10.1 to acclaim RC2-RC5 and nothing has worked.]
Maybe someone can kindly tell me why the dedicated developers working on Android for tablets (vs phones) don't modify the ROMs to use internal storage? When apps require an SD card there should be a way for the OS to 'trick' the app into using the sideloading partition, or even the main emmc as ext sdcard, no? The Cyanogen OS is such a great little OS except for this one fatal flaw. Is it really that difficult of a problem to address? (sincerely asking as I am not a programmer but wish I was!) Thanks for any insight.

You might want to try Succulent's CM10.1 builds posted at http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013/02/18/cm10-1-jellybean-android-4-2-2-for-nook-tablet-0218/ (look for extra sd-location tweak flash under heading "Flash this if you want your downloaded app data to be stored in EMMC (sdcard0)").
Two assumptions that I'm making:
This replaces the whole kernel?
Results of flashing it on, say, AOKP would be unpredictable?

Apps Graying Out

I am having problems with my S4 apps that I move to SD get grayed out. I am running Faux123 Kernel with stock rooted Andy's ME7 rom. Is this a Kernel issue or a SD card issue? I don't remember having this problem before using this Kernel but not sure if i downloaded anymore apps while on stock kernel. But it did fix the camera issues. Any suggestions? Right now I have a 64gb card extFAT format.
Was gonna try KT Kernel but I see a lot of people having issues with it. Thanks in advance. Or if you have a Kernel that you think is better for this please let me know

[Q] how to partition sd card? what ROM to use after that?

Hello together,
i have a problem with a desire x and i hope you guys can help me.
i have used the search but the posts i find are from last year so i'm not sure if this info are still up to date.
So i want to partition the sd card so i can install more apps on the phone.
Is there any better (easier or more secure) way than with 4EXT Recovery Updater?
Does the DX support the 4EXT or do i need to do a 3EXT?
Can i use all ROM's after portitioning the sd card? Do they all support installing apps on the sd card after partitioning it?
This are my questions, i hope you can help me a bit on that.
Thanks
You can also create partition on your sd card using AParted app from play store here : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sylkat.AParted&hl=en
i have used it and it works as advertised
regarding support it depends on kernel and rom but EXT3 and EXT4 both are supported on DX as far as i have used them
not sure about all roms but i guess yes all roms might support partitions but you also need a compatible kernel.. i use nexus kernel v3 on EXT4 partition and it works well for me
dont know about direct install on sd card but i use Link2sd app which creates a 'link' and apps are indirecly as a whole moved to sd card if i am not wrong
Thank you i will try this app.
About the link2sd... i thought if i partition the card, the phone will automatically install new apps on this partition.
but it's not a big deal to have an app to do that.
I hope everything will work fine
Thanks again for your help.
i have one more question
Do i need to be rooted to install the apps you suggested and use them? or can i do this without root?
that would be such easier if i don't have to root the phone first and install any other ROM.

it doesnt make sense to root your phone when you`re planning to install a different rom anyway.
the rom gets rooted, not the phone. and most of the custom roms available here a already pre-rooted.
and yes, at least link2sd needs root to work properly, dont know about the other app.
I thought without root we can't install any other ROM?
or is this S-OFF thing not something like root?
but anyway, if you say the link2sd needs root then i have to install such a rooted ROM.

[Q] SGH-T399 How do I switch/combine my internal and external SD cards

Hi, I'm new to the forums and I want to know if I can switch/combine my internal and external sd cards on my SGH-T399(T-Mobile). I also have it rooted with TWRP 2.7.0.0. Also I tried the vold.fstab method but it just stayed on the T-Mobile LTE screen for about 10 minutes until I turned it off and reset it with Odin. So if it's possible please expain it in noob format. Thanks!
Anyone?
hopefully this helps
I am in the same situation as you are. I found a thread with a possible solution but its for a different device. I am in the process of trying it out and hoping it solves my little dilemma. I will post up updates and/or results asap.
I've been making some headway on my t-399n.
Search for my thread "Metro PCS Sgh-t399n.
I've enabled init.d support & swap file capabilities, I have 750MB virtual memory from three partitions, and running some VERY sweet init.d scripts.
Now I'm attempting to modify & customize our stock kernel using various init.d scripts...

Swap file has nothing to do with combining internal and external memory. From what I know you can link a partition from the external memory to the internal memory to expand it but not combine the whole external and internal memory to form one memory partition.
Let me clarify, that was misleading.. sorry. I've tried combining the two, and my phone quit recognizing external all together. It was an init.d script. Perhaps I didn't understand how to properly do it.
The point I was trying to convey is that if we get swap going, maybe somebody will use the same premise and have more success than I did ?
