kernel problem with JK2.1.1 - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys, ok i loaded the AOSP ish JK2.1.1 official froyo and liked it but i wanted voodoo lag fix on it so i flashed overstock, worked fine but i wanted the stock kernel because i like the feel of it better so i backed up the stock kernel with kernel flasher and than flashed overstock and then after it was done i flashed the stock kernel from this rom and bricked i know how to unbrick i just want to know why it happed or if it can even be done?

If you converted to voodoo, then flashed a non voodoo kernel, you will have a sad panda.
Next time disable voodoo before flashing

Yup. Just Odin back to stock with repartition checked. Then reflash.

Downgrade 2.2 to 2.1 I SEARCHED ALREADY!

Ok before everybody goes crazy over here and starts to roast me for putting up such a noob question and all that and telling me to search.. Here it goes.. Dont do it please!
Ok so i got TeamWiskey's Froyo 2.2 i like the rom and everything but the phone and contacts.apk suck they are terribly laggy and etc. So also my launcherpro plus seems to lag a bit more on 2.2 so now im wondering how to revert back to 2.1 without using ODIN! i dont do odin i dont know odin and i dont wanna mess with odin.. So is it possible i can just flash a 2.1 kernel like TeamWiskeys Core v3 and then flash a 2.1 Rom? Or no its not possible..
I have not done it personally, but if you flash the stock JI6 kernel you could probably just restore one of your nandroid backups of stock (assuming you have one).
Just install Bionix or something

I dont think installing bionix or fusion will get me back to 2.1 kernel or will it? And hmm i dont want to risk anything nd im not sure if i have a nandroid of 2.1 or is my nandroid 2.2
just flash a rom with a kernel that is built into the rom. any of the bionix roms should do.

Yes, almost (It think all) custom 2.1 ROMs have a kernel built in.
I know Master Rom does
Bionix does
Fusion does
etc
If you open the zip & go to updates & see zImage then yes
Alrite cool so ill just try that i didnt trust myself into doing it and risking a brick so yeah thanks for the help guys//
Ok it worked somebody can lock this now.. All i did was flash another fusion rom =]

O/Cing question.

I have a dumb question, and didn't seem to get a direct answer. I just recently started flashing new roms and using odin, but was curious about O/Cing. With the Fusion rom already flashed, do I just flash the Voodoo kernel or do I reflash the stock firmware and THEN flash the kernel followed by the rom? Or is there something I should or should not do in there, lol. Any input is appreciated, as I am relatively new to all this.

If your new to all this don't use voodoo just yet unless your willing to deal with a brick as it's very easy to brick with voodoo
V5 custom vibrant
Any suggestions on getting me familiar with Voodoo then? Lol

Ok, so I read up and flashed the Project Core v2 kernel last night on the 1.2 Fusion rom and it ran perfectly and was super quick at 1200/200 on setcpu. Problem is today after rebooting, it will completely freeze every once in a while while doing something media-wise, such as watching youtube videos or playing Hyper Jump. I know I didn't flash the kernel or rom wrong, so is there something I am missing? I also have the OCLF installed, if that matters.
Tonight I am going to reflash them both to see if it works, but would like to see if there is something I can do before I get off work.

The chips in our phones are not stable when over clocked.

you can just flash the voodoo kernel over fusion, but not all vibrants are capable of using voodoo. i.e. the vibrants with the larger nand chip does not support voodoo. if you do flash the voodoo kernel and your phone does not support, everything will still work just fine, but voodoo will not be enabled.
as for OCing..not all vibrants are capable of OC. it may run smooth at first, but some vibrants will start freezing up or slowing down. i found dragons kernel to work amazing or core 1.0ghz kernel

Alrighty, I may just drop the OC then. I just wasn't sure if it was me or not.
Thanks for the input guys!

SC 2.9 voo doo

Warning Noob Question:
So I flashed sc 2.9 nv. Does the sc 2.9v rom include a voo doo kernel or would I flash the kernel then flash the 2.9v rom? Also is this worth my time. Everything seems to run smooth as is. Will voo doo give me any noticable benefits?
Thanks
Superclean comes with either a voodoo kernel or a nonvoodoo kernel depending on which one you install. But in reality, its better to flash some of the custom Froyo kernels afterwards for a bit more umph.

I cant find one thats non touchwiz
Or imnuts' latest I think it's 330, works great for me
What advantage does that have over the standard eb01 voodoo kernel?
Well it looks like it doesn't matter because I cant flash them anyway. The only Kernels I can find wont flash using cwm 3. I cannot find an older version of cwm anywhere.
SC should have installed cwm 2.5 at the same Time. The fascinate still use cwm red, not orange.
Also I would install jt's new ec10 based voodoo kernel. Yes it's TW but it's stable and clean.

What happens if I flash a tw kernel with a rom that isnt?
voodoo kernel, IMO, since it utilizes the faster ext4 file system instead of the stock samsung one.
Ok so i tried flashing a bunch of different cwm versions and eventually started getting an error in cwm when i did a boot to recovery through Rom Manager. So i did the normal boot and when it pulled up it was red lettering and said CWM Voodoo lagfix recovery 2.5.x. So I figured while i was there i would try to flash the voodoo kernel in my sd card and it worked. Creepy robot voice and all. Now im wondering what I did and if maybe i screwed up something since my CWM 3 doesn't seem to be working.
You don't want CWM 3 to work. With the Fascinate, you need to stay on 2.5.x.x because CWM 3 is written for the newer edify scripting. Fascinate still uses amend scripting.
Awesome. Thanks for all the help. One more question. Is it a necessaty to download setcpu with voodoo? am i going to hurt my phone without it?
No it's not necessary, and it won't cause any damage. Over/under clocking your CPU can be of some benefit (performance vs. battery life when idle), but it is definately not mandatory.

Volume buttons are messed up after flash

I rooted my vibrant, installed CWM,update voodoo on stock froyo, but couldn't get the voodoo lagfix work(can't mount, file existing errors). So I disabled lagfix and flash a stock 2.1, upgrade to 2.2, and then flash in the voodoo 5.5 with Odin.
It works now but somehow in between the process, it messes up my volume buttons. Up is now Down and Down is now Up, I remember this behavior in CWM too but I thought that's how it works in CWM. So I guess it's not OS's problem. However, I'm not really familiar with linux so I really need your help. I'd appreciate any input.
Are u sure u didnt flash a i9000 rom and/or kernel?

Ummm, I think I flashed in the i9000 kernel. I thought it would work....So, since I don't see a froyo kernel for vibrant, there is no way to fix this?
If so, i'll flash back a stock JFD and just wait.

If you head over to the vibrant android development forum there is actually an array of different roms you can try with different kernels. I would however suggest odin back to stock first and see if that fixes your mapping problem, just to make sure it's software and not hardware related.
Theirs ur problem their is 2 kernels for vibrant(i think) flash one of those and u will b good....last resort odin back to stock

Thanks for all the replies.
I'm going to flash a vibrant kernel and hope that fixes the problem.
edit: with new kernel, now it works flawlessly

Flashing kernels

I have a t959. I tried to flash a new kernel and it didn't go so well. I used beowolfs restore and now I'm back on eclair 2.1 update 1, T959uvjfd, kernel 2.6.29. Can someone tell me why no matter what I try to flash I have to use the beauwolf restore to use my phone again. Originally I had froyo on ka6. I wasn't a good k andernel for battery life and have all the voodoo stuff and bln support. what am I doing wrong? Thanks
I'm not too sure what "beauwolf restore" is, link maybe cuz now I'm interested. I know you should probably upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 before you flash any kernels. Good luck!
Try flashing using sgs kernel flasher its free on the market.
