GO Launcher and IMEI - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

So this dude says something about GO Launcher sending the IMEI no. to the dev. itself. Anyone have more info about that? Thoughts?
I wasnt able to find any relevant information about that @ google.

Even if that rumour is true, What is the dev gonna do with 200,000 IMEIs?

I didn't watch the video but people are suspicious about the Go software for a while since they are nonprofit, no ads and totally great in functions. Who gives free lunch?
There might be stuff they can do with such information. I don't know.

Yes, I was kinda of skeptical after knowing that none of their apps cost. I don't think there is anyway that they make money from themes, so how the hell?
But as for now I'm enjoying the launcher, the best one ive used so far and havent gotten into any trouble. Hope this remains a rumor.

There is an article on MoDaCo called GoApps - investigating the privacy claims which seems to clear thing up.
IMO the whole thing smells of "Look at me! My first video on XDA and I want to be controversial!"
Still, if I hadn't looked into this non-issue I would never have found out about the excellent LBE Privacy Guard app which is available for free on the Market

Best security app for 2011

So what is everyone's favorite security app of 2011- and why? I know some people think security apps are not necessary. If you feel security apps are not necessary, let us know why. Any security apps that don't work on the 3D? Don't keep that info to yourself! In light of the recent news reports about phone hacking, news about malware in the android market, and criminal activity concerning phones in general, I thought it was a timely subject to discuss. Please don't let the thread devolve into a flamefest! We are better than that!
Edit: I know the poll is kinda big but I made it big on purpose. I had no idea there were this many different security apps out there until I did the research for this poll and I figured I couldn't be the only one so I put em up here so others could find out about them too. If I missed your favorite app, I'm sorry! Just give a shout out for it in the comments!
Lookout is what ive had on my phone since evo4g release date. The guys know their stuff that make it. They were on cnbc special one night showing hacking in open wifi areas.

Ive used Lookout and SmrtGuard on my 4G. But have not used any on my 3VO as of yet
Mobile Defense is probably the most reliable one I've used, it sucks that they are in limited beta though.

It's nice to know you can access methods to: remote lock, track, alarm & wipe your phone when its not in your possession anymore.
That whole virus & malware mess (if we can even call it that) is easily avoided with the common sense app, I agree.
As for malware you don't really have to worry about anything atm. HTC has done a god job of patching all of the security holes they all use.
I think htc also may have something built into the phones to track then if they are lost but I doing know as I haven't set it up myself yet.

I think you need to put AndroidLost on that list. That app is great.
Isn't there a setting in our devices by default that allow you to find a lost or stolen Evo 3D? I haven't played with it and know nothing about it. I just remember disabling it because I heard it sucks your battery down pretty quickly.
Htcsense.com website is the one built into phone... Right now its a huge disappointment as many have reported it not working. It is in beta and when it works 100% it will be a great asset

look out is good tho only reason you would need a anti virus is if u are going crazy with the random apps on the market which have spy ware in them. Linux is pretty much virus free the only way you could get something is if you give it permissions to do so. I never need a anti virus.
Anyone familiar with "Phone Locator Pro" (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rvo.plpro)? It looks pretty nice, too bad they don't have a trial. :/
I use AegisLab Antivirus Free, the option Appscan is outdated.
Scan is pretty fast and lightweight, and according to author, they will support SD card scan soon.
I got Seekdroid on the amazon app store when it was the free app of the day and it seems to work really well. Plus, the website interface is very good/easy.
I believe they also just released a free "lite" version of the app if any want to check it out.
I was using lookout, but am trying myphone without it to see if it saves any battery..but may end up putting it back on, even if it doesn't work as some say, having that sense of mind that you're phone is "protected" is kinda relieving
Just came out today guys.....tell me what you think.Tektrak works on iOs and android. Can't be removed from phone.Awesome

Amazon Test Drive

This may be a bone head old news post, but it's something I just noticed. I usually check for the free amazon app on my phone each morning but forgot to this morning so I checked online. This is when I noticed a "Test Drive" button as pictured below. I havn't had a chance to play with it yet, but wondering if others have and if, in fact, this is nothing new and I just failed to notice.

[APP]Tapatalk (Pro)

I figured I would come here for some sort of guidance about Tapatalk. I'm sure some of you remember way back when Tapatalk was a paid app. I bought it. And now there is a Pro version. Problem is, the app that I paid for is now free. I emailed customer support about it almost 2 weeks ago and still haven't received word back. Anybody else feel this pain or has anybody even been able to reach them about being compensated for it? Guess for now I have to resort to Aptoide to get what I want.

I might be missing something, but I don't understand the issue.
The app was good enough for you to pay for it when you paid for it, and no features have been removed. The only thing you're upset about is that now other people can get it free? It doesn't sound like you lost anything here. Why would they refund you when you had the app and used it far longer than anyone who is just using the free version now?
The license is lifetime so he has a right to want any refund.

i think he's upset that it's free now and he paid for services that r now i guess:good:
The issue is that he paid for a fully working product, now that product has been removed from the play store and replaced by a gimped version of another product that he possibly paid for as well. I myself find this extremely wrong from the company to do this. Instead they should have left the two versions as they were and add a new free gimped one, but they wanted the good ratings from the paid one for the free one... Such bad practice

that shows you have no idea what you are talking about.
The original 2 version has been removed from the play store (can now only be accessed with some link from them) and replaced by a gimped version of the "tapatalk pro" application. I wont go into detail as to what is all gimped, as you can look t hat up yourself, but just so you wont post something like "whats removed again", for instance posting picturesin the "free" version goes only with watermark...

Looks like I'll have to do that to get the full story.
I'm a little miffed too because I paid for it, but now I have to use their free version with ads, and if I want the ad free version I have to pay again? Thats messed up to me. Make your paid version free and add back the ads, then make a "new" version that you now have to pay for? So basically I can stick with the old version (which I am), but now I don't get any updates or new features. Yes they are greedy, there have been 1 or 2 app devs that ive encountered that have made changes where previous buyers would "lose out" in some way, but they came up with some kind of way for previous buyers to redeem the new or corrected version. These guys did not....I mean didn't they already have a free version? I know they at least allowed individual forums to create their own version they could distribute freely.
+1 I've paid for 2 versions of the app already, they just taking advantage now. I won't be paying for anymore versions. Came here thinking many more would be as annoyed but not so. Tapatalks own forum has some interesting info but little care from the devs. Poor form.

Yes, they won't even talk about it. Second time this year I've had a developer screw me over changes to a paid app. Then they complain about people not buying it.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 using TapaTalk Pro
I don't mind buying better apps etc but all they ever do is rebrand the same app with a feature or 2 and then ask for more money. Almost like we're paying to beta test. The arguments about buying a new copy of windows are stupid. But if people must, XP -> Vista -> 7 were significant enough changes to warrant paying for a new product IMO.
I was fooled twice, my fault but won't happen a 3rd time. If they do happen to release something amazing, I'll obtain it from a 3rd party source unfortunately.
Well I don't think you will receive a refund. This isn't even logical enought to debate.
I remain of the view that the old version was much better with the themes, and everything else

Exploitable hack needs an update to be seriously pushed

http://www.xperiablog.net/2015/08/0...ty-fix-heading-to-xperia-z-series-this-month/
This is to confirm Sony will be pushing out an update to protect their Z series phones first from this Stagefreight problem that involves hacking our Androids with simply MMS. The issue is for us is that we still haven't had Lollipop to our phones for this long. Will this patch update may even take Verizon to do a hell a lot longer before they could even give us our deserved update? Because this is a serious issue that must be addressed.
I've also attached a screenshot from the analysis app for my Z3v, and we're definitely vulnerable...

Not only stagefright but now certifi-gate, and certifi-gate you need to update the whole OS to fix it, so maybe we will finally get Lollipop, but wouldn't hold your breath.
I feel like a duck sitting on a pond surrounded by hunters, being a sitting duck I don't like.
SO LETS SEE HOW VZW PROTECTS THEIR NETWORK NOW!
Will VZW patch or will VZW not?
The quick fix solutions I have found so far in credits to Android Authority is to either download Textra for your messaging app, or disable auto downloading of MMS attachments on your messaging app.
To do that on our phones, go to stock Messaging app, Settings, then scroll down to uncheck Auto MMS Retrieval.

Good tip, did that yesterday to mine and my wife's phone after reading the exploit news.
Be careful, any MMS can have the exploit attached.

You have to remember that MIUI started here on xda before Xiaomi bought them out.
Warez or not, MI Store sucks ass, but banning ROMs is pointless, MIUI forum is trash, I still don't know how it works, and some ROM's has backdoors and for example, they send paid SMS to vietnam, That sh!t costed me 50 bucks!!!

First let me make one thing very clear. I have nothing against Chinese people that make software. You have to understand the Government that runs the country there, to have a small understanding. You see In china they have the right to monitor everything their citizens are doing on the internet. This is part of the reason for the great firewall of china. So spyware, malware and other software that helps in this are normally sponsered by the Military to help in doing just this.
I have never used it myself but as it is an open source based OS it should be good. You can see just what it is doing. The hard part will be the coding translations, as things dont always translate right.
Any non MIUI based rom should be ok. The problem with that is CM is normally buggy and all the roms use the patch rom setup which is never really stable nor is it something I would trust as that is injecting stuff into a rom that I cant VET.
In this day and age one has to be careful with all these new toys that are coming to many markets across the world.
Remember, You get what you pay for. So if something is too good to be true then you have to find the catch.

You are right about the store, i was quite surprised when i found paid apps there. This is correct.
But i'm not sure if this is still the case, i saw them a year ago, now i couldn't find the apps,
maybe they've cleaned the store in meantime.
And a script removing apps isn't hard, just search for "updater-script remove apps".
BUT i've tried such script on Sony Xperia P, not in MIUI, i don't know if deleting Mi Store (com.xiaomi.mipicks) would cause bootloop or not.
I know that Mi Store enabled/disabled is region dependent, you can disable it when switching to another region in Beta rom.
But deleting? I know that when i've deleted Updater apk, or changed its permissions, it caused bootloop. Needs to be confirmed.
But with government spying - if you want to be honest - maybe we should ban all ROMs tied with Google, which means all Androids?
Remember about PRISM and Edward Snowden?
American's NSA (National Security Agency) ?
I have nothing to American people, just sayin.
But according to former CIA employee, Edward Snowden, Google joined to the NSA spying program in 14 Jan 2009.
I think that you simply have a choice - either give your personal data to American or to Chinese people. (or both).
You can minimize the risk by disabling for ex. Analytics app... etc.
But saying that chinese are spying... USA govt does the same
And better not looking for Echelon project...
But - the main topic here - yes, it's a good idea to remove Mi Store from roms.
One can always add it himself/herself, there are also other stores, F-droid, Aptoid, there is a choice
American companies aren't communist nor are they guilty of some of the most sever human rights violations in the world.
