[Q] bare bones android OS possible? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

First off I just want to say I'm very new to rooting and this community so I appologize if this seems obvious to others...
I recently switched from a nexus one on tmob to the SGS2 on ATT, needless to say I hate MyTouch and would LOVE to get back to the way my n1 was managed. What I mean by that is, the bigges tthing that is annoying the hell out of me with this SGS2 is how restricted the options are for the OS. Below is a basic list of my annoyances with the device...
-the silence/vibrate mechanics SUCK
-i'd love to be able to NOT unmount the built in storage when connecting via usb to xfer files on/off my SD card (i.e. mount/unmount sd and internal separately)
-have basic vanilla android lock screen
-and if at all possible completely avoid all the bloatware and unnecessary services that come along with ATT
So that being said, can anyone point me in the right direction for rooting/flashing whatever i need to do to get back to an OS more like my N1's?
(i found stockturbo in a search earlier, but it was in reference to another device... i'm not sure if it'll work with the sgs2 etc, like i said, newbie rooter here)

under android development, search for CyanogenMod (CM7) rom. instructions are included in the thread.

CM7 is the droid you're looking for.

thanks for the quick and accurate responses guys, much appreciated =)

[Q] What 2do after unboxing galaxy note ?

Hey all,
I am switching frm BB to android and am quite excited for it. I ordered note for at&t frm amazon.com for 200$$...seems to be a good price.
Now being completely new to the android world and to the world of rooting, flashing, etc. I would appreciate some help or opinions.
After reading various forums and threads, the first things I will do after getting my device is to root it. I will use rootgalaxynote dot com for that.
Next comes upgrading to ICS. This is where I am confused. There are so many versions, how do you guyz figure out which one is the best or the latest. It was soo easy in blackberry, there was a linear numbering system where 7.1 is better than 7.0 and so on. But in adroid, there are sooo many different names like onlyone, noteworthy, cm9, saurom...how to choose one and which one is the latest ?
Next, I have to enable free tethering to my laptop. I had this app on my BB from tether.com, but I don't know which app to use on Note and how to make it work. Any help will be highly appreciated.
Lastly, it would be gr8 if you could let me know what more to do to make my note more useful and efficient with good signal strength and battery life. Also recommendations for the must-have apps would be great.
Thank you.

First off...Welcome.
All of the names you listed are ROMs. They all run on the latest ICS leak 4.0.4. But since you're new to android, Id recommend stock ICS.
The latest ICS leak is called UCLE2. If you want to try it out stock ICS first before flashing roms, you need to download the ICS UCLE2 leaked "tar" file. http://www.ponack.net/designgears/leaks/SGH-I717UCLE2_74A55FA71D15964F9EC9E9489B34DE4E.exe
Be sure to download this file from your computer, not your phone.
I ffound some instructions on how To do it. Make sure you READ it atleast 5 times before actually doing it. ALSO, Be sure to have all the files you need before attempting. If you get confused, search it up on XDA...as most people have already posted it. If not, don't hesitate to ask.

i'll just copy/paste this from another thread as it applies here.

I would have to advise waiting a while.
1. Keep in mind what it means to root a phone. You are giving yourself the highest access and control priveleges on your devise and remaining at that privelage level from here on out. In the IT world this is actually a huge nono for security. Look at what you are downloading. What does the app want for permissions? Why does a live wallpaper need full network access ? Why does it need to be able to keep the phone from sleeping? Malware for android is on the rise but a rooted phone is by far the most vulnerable. With android, the security of our devises rests on us not being brain dead like iFail users. In return we get nearly unlimited potential on what can be ran on our phones.
2. People forget that this is xda DEVELOPERS. If you are expecting a 100% polished and refined product without hickups here and there then you are in the wrong place. Yes the roms are fantastic. We have some real talent working on the galaxy note but don't expect the moon.
3. Don't start trying to root and flash until you are comfortable with the terminology that gets tossed around. If you don't know what CWM stands for then you haven't studied enough. Guides to accomplish flashing and rooting exist but trying to follow along with no concept of what is going on can lead to a lot of frustration if not disaster. If you don't understand why you need to do something, don't do it.

i know you're eager but enjoy your stock rom for a while. also you may not appreciate the responses you will get asking these most basic of questions. all of them have answers easily available in these subforums either by browsing or the search function. those questions have been answered 1000+ times so dont be suprised when no one jumps to give you the answers. this is xda DEVELOPERS (i.e. advanced users) not Noobs 'r Us. have fun learning as we all did.

[Q] Permanent Root for NT with CM7

I have a Nook Tablet 8gig that I rooted about 10 months ago with no problems. I have had no complaints so I have not mucked around with it, but now I am wondering about updating a bit. The issue is that I want to be able to use an external keryboard dock with my NT, and I read that it was only possible with CM7 (not sure if that means CM7 and above). I rooted the NT using the great instructions and files recommended in the developers thread, but to be honest I have no idea what my nook is rooted with- it works well so I have not messed with it.
I am essentially looking for instructions on how to re-root my NT after I re-set it to factory, or how to alter my current root to run CM7. My screen is half wonked, and I may take it back since I got the extended warrenty, especially if I have to re-root it for this anyway.
Also...what is CM7? Is that an Android version?
As a side note: Can anyone confirm that you can use an external keyboard with CM7 or above?
What do you want to do first?...do you want to return to stock so that you can return your nt...or do you want to flash cm7? (cm7 is a ROM by the way a version of Android os)

Ultimately what I want to do is run an external keyboard, and the information I have is that they will run on CM7. I will probably (assuming my warranty will cover this) be getting this one fixed to replaced soon, so I will need to re-root when I get it back, but for now I don't see the need to re-root if I don't have to.

If your nook is broken already, why bother doing anything to it? Just get it fixed then address the things you want to address. And while you are waiting for the replacement see the next line.
After reading above quote along with your original post you honestly need to read...A LOT. You need to learn at least the basic lingo before you even make an attempt to do anything. Failure to have even an iota of understanding will only lead to failure, complaints, and frustration. Spend a few hours going through the posts on here. There are several new user guides. Read them. Re-Read them. Read them again. Learn to understand what people are talking about when someone says something like "Flash x, y, or z".
As for the keyboard question, I am fairly certain that it doesn't work on ANY rom. They are working on getting the OTG portion of the kernel ironed out. While it is called a tablet it is a glorified E-Reader. The devs have done an awesome job making the Nooks into what they are today (for those of us that have modified them),

Any good links to layman information sites or tutorials? I was able to Root it easily (it is pretty simple), but I will admit that some of the android specific terminology does go over my head.

I have read several places where cm7 has allowed keyboard use for users. They are not expensive, and I would really like to try.
As for getting it fixed...well I love my nook and use it every day, so I have been loathe to take it in. I suppose that is silly.

You will love it more when it works completely and isn't "wonky". You will survive without it for a little bit. Trust me you won't die. Also because CM7 allows for a keyboard doesn't mean every device running CM7 will. Search the forums for more information. I know that some of the developers have been working on it for CM10 but I don't recall seeing any posts saying that they have it working definitively.
As for specific sites or tutorials. Just visit the various android boards and look for the Noob guides. Search google for more details on subjects you want to know about.

Thank, I just took it back to Best Buy and they replaced it with an HD. I thought about an HD+, but I use my nook for reading more than anything (lots of comics, some novels), and the 9" is much less comfortable for that. Now I need to root this bad boy, and I don't have to monkey around with roms other than rooting because the HD already has support for an external keyboard.
This can be closed, as far as I am concerned. Thanks.

[Q] Looking to start developing for the DNA

Hi guys,
I'm looking to finally make the plunge and start some basic development for the DNA. I have been with Android since the first Droid, and I have been rooting and ROM'ing since then as well. I would be greatly appreciative if someone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction of where to begin and any advice from the pro's would be highly welcomed. I was thinking about starting off by using dsixda's Android Kitchen, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience using that to build/modify ROM's.
Main questions:
==============
1. What areas would you recommend I focus on to start ROM'ing?
2. Do you prefer to develop using Windows or Linux?
3. What sort of development is really wanted by the DNA community (maybe give me a goal to shoot for)?
Kindest regards,
Steve
1. There are a few directions you can go with romming
a. Retain sense and allow more customization. This is the UKB route of sorts.
b. Remove sense as much as possible to make a lightweight ROM. Genome approach.
c. Port over (or attempt to port) a mainstream ROM such as CM10 or MIUI.
To be honest, I think there is plenty of room for option 'b'. It is more simple than option 'c' and has a few less headaches. Option 'a' already has UKB which will be difficult to beat.
2. Linux is going to be much easier to start developing on since most all the tools can be found in your package manager of choice. I do believe that the linaro toolchain relies off of it as well. Windows is always an option if you really want to.
3. If I were you, I would shoot for a ROM that was similar to the old Liberty ROM's on the D2 and DX of old. The concept of that was to have a very light base as near to stock as possible and allow users to add in core stock functionality. For example MediaLink will never be used by most people, and I think it doesn't really need to be there, but give the user the ability to turn it on.
If you want to monetize your rom a bit too, you can go the Liberty route of having an optional companion configuration app. This is a new processor and I think a lot of current toolbox apps don't properly support that functionality.
It's a new device, the doors are really wide open. I would love to assist where I can. I do not have much programming experience, but I do love to tinker.

Ah yes, I had a DX and I remember the Liberty ROM's. I think that might be my first goal - to make a super minimal stockish ROM. The only thing I'm worried about at this point is bricking my DNA for a stupid mistake or something. Well, hopefully I can figure this stuff out and have something to share within the next few weeks.
Thanks,

You shouldn't run into any bricking problems if you aren't messing with kernel level things. When it comes down to it, basic ROMs are all about adding/removing themes and apps and customizing existing functionality. It is very difficult to actually brick this phone unless you screw up on the bootloader exploit so you can unlock. You can also brick if you are messing around with hboot and other base level things, which you shouldn't be unless you are willing to take the risks or are really experienced.
Well, since I assume that you'll use your own ROM, why not start with what you wish another ROM had. Alternatively, you could ask what skills you want to learn/improve and use that to guide you.

For starters I took MicroMod777's stock ROM to work with, which I would like to thank and give the appropriate credit to. I think my main objective for my first ROM is to basically debloat this thing to the bare minimum, which may take some trial and error due to how the HTC apk's tie into each other. I would like to theme the notification bar (transparent) and throw in a battery mod, possibly one of my own design. It looks like the SystemUI.apk is what holds most of this information from what I can tell. If this all goes well then I will try to just go deeper and deeper. I would eventually like to work on a CM10 build, but this looks to be pretty advanced stuff.
Thank you for all the comments guys. Again, any advice or tips are always warmly welcomed and appreciated.

[Q] So noob and so confused

Hello everyone,
First of all i am new here and new to android so all of these silly questions you are about to hear are a product of my ignorance in such matters..
I have purchased an international HOX+... Yay! i think..
I was persuaded to go android instead of my old iPhone because you can have customs roms ect so the customization is close to an infinite number of possibilities and that is great for me.
However that there is so much information on this subject and it all varies so much that now i have no idea how to go about putting one of these on my phone.. The Cyanogenmod and Viper ones interest me most.
So my question is this..
From a stock international HOX+ (On Vodaphone if that makes a difference) how do i put either Cyanogenmod or Viper on my phone?
Trust me i have looked on google and this site as much as i can and without someone spoon feeding me this information i fear i will never quiet grasp it.
Welcome to the world of Android
I would say you can find the info in the Venom-Thread what you have to do... Usually you can find the necessary info on the first page of a ROM. But don't forget, you can easily leave the original ROM as it is, you are not forced to change it! The HTC ROM is very good, so maybe you can live with it and read on until you are used to Android?
Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2122390
Installation (out of this Thread):
Unlock your bootloader via HTCDev.
Download Venom mod of TWRP Recovery and flash it using Venom Flasher.
Download the ROM and place it on your virtual SD card.
Download boot.img and flash it using Venom Flasher.
Go into recovery and install the ROM.
Reboot the device and enjoy!
Please read everything you possibly can about Android and the flashing process before you do anything to your phone. Android is a different beast from iOS and the more educated you are the less problems you'll have. To me it sounds like you don't really know what the benefit of a custom ROM is, you just know iPhone's can't do it. I suggest you use your phone normally and get to know Android inside and out, and once you have a need for a custom ROM then take the leap.
Remember, at some point you WILL break something and you WILL rely on the community to help fix your problem. We can't help fix your problem if you have no idea what you did, so please read read read before you do any tweaking.
That being said, welcome to Android.
Thank you both, i followed as you said and i am now running viper.. it is far beyond anything i thought my phone could do and i am very impressed. Simple and easy to do, following those instructions. I was wondering, as before i was using Chrome and Play Music pretty much all day everyday but now it says Chrome, Firefox and Play Music are not supported by my device, is that because of the custom ROM and something we put up with? not that i mind of course, being a linux user i can understand it but just want to make sure im not missing something before i go for Opera or something.

Take a look at your devices DPI. That can affect app availability. Also tell the dev of the rom your using, maybe he changed something in the build.prop which is making thoes apps show as incompatible.
Sent from my HTC One X+ using Tapatalk 2
I have done as you asked and my DPI (Screen density i believe) is set at 320
320 is default. I wouldn't start changing it much as its been reported that it gives Sense FC's.Enjoy viper. It's a great rom

[Q] Rookie Question - SCH-i545 Owner (Rooting & Roms)

Howdy all - so I've spent about a week on these forums - and the interwebs in general - trying to make sense of the rooting / rom scene. I've played with smart phones for quite awhile - including an HTC Incredible & Galaxy S2 for a short period (my only previous exposure to Android) - but never rooted or put custom ROM's on them. I've mostly been an iPhone user - and was always jailbroken.
Much to my disappointment, after picking up my Verizon Galaxy S4 (I traded someone from my iPhone 5) - I discovered all the bloatware - among other things - and want to put a custom rom on it.
I do have 4.3 on MJ7. My understanding is the previous owner of this device had the phone for about 2 week.
So - what are my options? I am a bit confused with all the different concepts & terms.
I understand MJ7 is pretty locked - but have been paying attention to the vRoot method.
If I WERE to use it - and root my phone - what would be my next step?
Do I then have to install a recovery loader or is that still not an option?
My "goal" is to have a leaner more efficient OS running so that things move faster and battery drain is kept to a minimum.
If I understand things - if I do root - I would need to use a 4.3 ROM, correct? Or no? Could I use a 4.2 ROM?
I still don't understand where "safestrap" and whether a ROM has TouchWiz fits into things.
I've read about this Knox 0x1 stuff too - but I'm not worried about warranty issues - that's the only real concern, right?
I know once I'm rooted - I can run things like nandroid backup - right? Among other things?
But my big issue is - I want a stable custom ROM that doesn't have all the bloatware & that works well.
Can I do this now - if I used the vRoot method (I know some are still iffy about it & I understand those concerns)?
I apologize to those of you who "know" this stuff. I really have been searching and reading up - but I have to be honest - my head is spinning with "what is what".
I understand the "potential" of Android over iOS - and appreciate/respect the complexities that come with it - but I am disappointed that things seem to be even more "locked down" and unreliable this far into the game for Android (I dumped my HTC Incredible & S2 because of far inferior performance, battery & reliability issues compared to iOS). I'm sure much of the blame lies with Verizon and/or Samsung as opposed to the actual OS, but, it is what it is.
Not looking to debate my experience or opinion; just looking for a little more guidance for a few things I'm struggling to comprehend.
I just want to have something that works- and works well.
I've been in & out of these forums over the years for different things and know it's a great resource. Thanks ahead of time for anyone that chooses to take the time to point me in the right direction(s).

As of now your ONLY option for MJ7 is root via VRoot.(Make sure you read the ENTIRE VRoot thread) That's it. No custom recovery, no ROMs, no Safestrap.
