Dropped calls and digital static? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Has anyone else had frequently dropped calls even when you have 3 or more bars of service? Also, my wife says that she often hears an echo or a "digital " static while talking to me. I have made many calls from all the same places with my old iPhone with no trouble.
I am loving this phone in every other way, but this is still a phone after all
I would hate to have to go back to an iPhone!

I am having the same issues. The static only seems to happen while using a bluetooth headset. I've only had dropped calls happen in my local area. Since this is where I use the phone the most, it's an obvious problem. I tested this with my Captivate and no dropped call. I am returning my SGS2 for a new one. The store was thinking it might have an antenna problem. I did notice that side by side against my Cap the SGS2 was getting much better reception. Standing still the Cap had a signal of -95, the SGS2 had -77. This is a very big difference. So I really don't think it's an antenna problem but I'm willing to try it rather than give up on it. If this doesn't work I'll return it and wait until new modems start hitting the forum.

Possible fix for dropped calls
Update to yesterdays post. I did return my SGS2 and received a new phone and sim card. There was one area in particular where my ability to make a phone call was near impossible. My Capitivate had no trouble here so I was annoyed. The new phone had some improvement but still not great. Later in the day on the way to bringing my son to Best Buy the phone was back to terrible. If I had had my box and receipt with me, I would've returned it right there. I told the cellular manager about my call issue. She told me to turn off 4G if possible. I don't have a toggle for 4G/3G so I just turned off the data. That solved my problem! I called someone to stay on the phone while driving through the effected area. There was a small span of about 30 seconds where he said my call was getting garbled but the call didn't drop. Before turning off the data it would have dropped numerous times by then.
If you're having call trouble, it's worth a shot.

[Q] Loss of signal in a crowd

I read something a week ago about someone losing all signal and not being able to call or text in a large crowd. Well it happened to me yesterday in a department store. I couldn't find my 13 year old daughter so I was trying to text and call and nothing would go through, even though I had 3 bars and 3G. I looked around and there was a lot of people and quite a few of them were on their phones in one form or another. This is very disheartening if in fact it is a serious hardware or software defect of the Vibrant.
Has this happened to anyone else?
Its happened to me before
I was at a huge music fest and got separated from my friends
The reason it happens is cause the air waves get over cluttered with wireless signals and it masks other signals
Your phone will show that it has full signal but when it tries to send data or call it needs to cut through that blanket of signal
Sent from my SGH-T959
Yep. Same problem with different phone, I was at a concert and there were a TON of people on there phones many having the same issue. You could see them holding to there ear then looking at the screen then back again.
The only time this happened to me it was a huge crowd-like 40k people but it was outside. I would think a store with a couple dozen shouldn't be a problem but maybe if you were indoors....?

[Q] issues with headphone jack, mobile network connection, and mms

I've had the amaze for two weeks now and for the most part love it aside from a few nagging issues.
1) Headphone jack is sensitive to movement (music will cut in and out sometimes if i am walking with it in my pocket)
2) Can't receive pictures. (I've set up my mms to have a max size of 3500k but still not able to receive anything)
3) My signal will cut out randomly for minutes randomly even in places that i usually have full bars. It doesn't just say no signal but my "mobile network" option says its off and its greyed out so i can't try to turn it back on.
Any one else having these issues or have any suggestions? thanks.

I have issue 3 sometimes. No solution yet.

Update.
1) The headphone issue of the sound cutting in and out only occurs with some headphones, so I'll just need to find a pair that work fit perfectly I guess. But it made still need to be fixed by sending it in.
2) After calling in, Telus tech support were able to work there magic and fixed the MMS problem. They said it sometimes happens when a new phone is just activated.
3) As for the signal, I found out that these new 3g, 4g phones only use the HSPA+ networks and cannot use the 2g (CDMA/ GSM) network to save battery. The 2g option is there to be used when roaming they said. That doesn't solve the random loss of signal but it has occurred for a while now so hopefully it won't happen much more. Hope this helps anyone else that might be having the same issues.
The only issue I have is the case that Tmobile provided, the hole for a typical headset and power/usb was too small.
I ended up getting the ibeats from beatsaudi. Sound awesome and fit fine, the only issue I'm having with those is the buttons for vol up/down/call dont work due to the fact thats its made for iphone. But other than that their awesome.
Maybe i'll try those on for size. Hopefully i'll find some cheaper ones that work though in the meantime because those aren't cheap.
Bose on ear headphones are amazing.

Amazing as in amazingly bad for the price. I'd Recommend AKG or Sennheiser. Failing that even some V-Moda's would be a good deal. Personally I use Custom made triple driver In Ear Monitors, and the Amaze, with the DSP running, is extremely good indeed soundwise. FAR better than the Ipod Touch I sold.

SECOND UPDATE
Turns out my headphone jack was defected, so I exchanged it for a new amaze, and so far so good.
As for the network connectivity, for TELUS users we don't have the option of 2g, so when I had the settings as wcdma/gsm my guess is the phone was trying to connect to the gsm network but when it couldn't connect it left my phone unconnected to any network. So far with the settings as wcdma only I haven't had any issues. I will see if this will stand the test of time.
I am having 2 of the problems you listed.
On the bus this morning, not only was it cutting out, but completely disconnecting and stopping the playback. As i put my hand in my pocket, I hit the play button and offensively heavy drum n bass started blasting. So good external speaker from what I can tell
I find I will have full coverage, and my texts will not go through. I will try out wcdma only and see if that helps.
I haven't tried receiving picture messages yet... :/
I guess I will pop by Wind on my lunch break and see if the headphone jack problem happens on another phone.
Make that all 3 issues :/

definitely take it in sooner than later to see about the headphone jack, because although they don't always advertise most companies have a 30 day grace period where you can just trade it in the store for a new one instead of shipping it off and waiting weeks for htc to look at it.
Some people say that some phones are just going to be defected since they are so new, so hopefully if you swap it the new one will work good like mine did.
Ask the tech person to do some initialization for your phone that should be able to receive mms afterwards.
As for the connectivity mine still loses signals from now and then, I guess i'll just have to live with it for now and avoid those areas as much as possible. Good luck
I tried the headphones that came with the phone and they work fine, so I guess I just have to be careful which headphones I use, and try out any before I buy them.
I went in to ask about the MMS, and learned my "unlimited everything" plan didn't have MMS... odd. I should still receive them when someone sends them, and I don't. They told me to go to another location *sigh*.
Update on the loss of signal problem, it only happens when I'm in my basement. I had someone call me while I had 3 bars, and I got a text saying I was about to have roaming charges. I think this has more to do with my provider than the phone. To combat this, I'm just going to leave my phone upstairs and access it from my laptop when I'm in the basement. I'm having problems rooting my phone, though... but that's for a different thread.

Voice call problems

Anyone else having people you call tell you they can't hear you in the middle of conversations? I can't find any correlation. It has happened with 3 different calls today. All in different locations, but not in the car.
I'll normally reposition the phone on my face and it will correct. Is it possible I'm covering the Mic with the Palm of my hand?
had this issue a second ago.. hmmm

Bought my g3 in Berlin, using it in Israel...
I am having this issue. issue is fine when the phone is directly to ur ear but if u adjust it or have it a couple of inches away it is horrible.
been testing all day. speakerphone doesn't have this problem.
leave a fake message for urself and u can hear the problem
take the phone and talk into it like a hand radio in normal to low dialogue. while doing it change between speaker and handset talk at the same level.
Anyone ever find a solution to this? I'm still having the problem. Wish I had returned the phone the first time it happened, but I thought it was just a bad signal. I went back in to Best Buy where I bought the phone and they were zero help.

Welcome to the club
Has anyone had any feedback from LG/Verizon on this?
I called both and was told "they hadn't heard of the problem" which I don't believe.
Anyone get a fix or has a replacement phone fixed the issue?
Yes - I'm still suffering with this issue.
I have been using speakerphone lately and have not had a single complaint. As previously noted, using a BT headset works fine every time as well.
This leads me to suspect that the noise cancelling/voice enhancement circuitry is running amok because supposedly speakerphone and BT do not use that feature, even though the one selection I have on my phone is off I think the phone still uses some enhancement when using the stock mic.
Next step is to block the mic on top with a piece of foam and see if that fixes it. By blocking that mic, the phone will think it's in a completely silent from ambient noise setting and maybe will turn off the noise cancellation circuitry.
Food for thought.
I don't know if I can prove it, but the problem feels worse (more people tell me they can't hear me) with the quick circle case on. It still happens with my other case and with no case at all, but less.
Has anyone who has this issue received today's OTA from Verizon? If so, is the problem still present for you? I will have a chance to test myself tomorrow.
I received the update yesterday and have not had anyone complain of call quality yet but I have not made a lot of calls. It is encouraging though because I would get complaints on most calls. I'll give it a few days and see before proclaiming it's fixed.
FWIW I was using an Otter Box and am now using an LG Circle case but it fails with/without the cases. IOW case made no difference.
I have my fingers crossed that it might be fixed.
I do notice the phone seems quicker with the update.
I made two calls on my Vzw G3 today, using only the handset (not speakephone or bluetooth), and both callers said I sounded fine. One call was about 15 mins, and one about 5. My fingers are crossed that it is fixed, too. I really don't have any other complaints about this phone, and there isn't one I would rather be using right now.

Unfortunately I updated a few days ago and I had the problem last night on a call. So frustrating.
So only one complaint and I think it was due to a poor coverage area. I would get complaints all day long and every day so maybe, just maybe, they fixed it.... Still not convinced but feeling positive about this issue.
Today out of 7 calls so far I have had one person tell me they couldn't hear me. Re-positioning the phone closer to my mouth so my ear was more on the glass and not the speaker hole fixed it.
It's better than it used to be but might still be having problems.. Time will tell.
As an update, the problem is still there but it does seem better. Maybe 3 out of 10 calls will have the person on the other end telling me they can't hear me, breaking up, under water etc.
I've about had it with this phone and Verizon and I'm real close to putting it on Swappa and moving on to another phone and maybe another carrier.
I have been cautiously trying voice calls on the handset, but really got used to carrying Bluetooth headphones around over the last few months.
I have had 2 calls in maybe 8 where the caller complained, so about the same ratio as you.
I still don't want to switch to a different phone. I am not convinced I want a moto x or that I am ready for the size of the nexus 6.
Verizon sucks, but I need the strong network.

I really believe the issue is the G3 on VZ. My spouse switched to the iPhone 6: no issues with voice calls, with same usage as with the G3. I prefer Android phones, so I haven't decided what to do yet.
My wife has an iPhone 4 and before my LG G3 I had a Droid Razr Maxx. Neither phone has this problem. Same number of calls, same locations etc. All the complaints I have seen involve the G3 on Verizon so it's probably something to do with Verizon's version of Android.

I've had the call fade in and out a bit. My spouse (has the same phone), noticed people complaining about fade out during calls, too. We noticed that if we held the phone normally (fingers wrapped around the phone, about the middle of the phone), the calls fade out. If you hold the phone around the bottom near the speaker -- or use a headset -- calls are okay.
As a little test, I held the phone normally and the network signal was around -114 dBM.
I put the phone on the table, the network signal was around -104 dBM.
Both our G3s exhibited this issue. We didn't purchase them together, either (one by mail, other from store). Perhaps its a phone issue, perhaps we coincidentally received bad phones.

I think there are more than just a few people with this problem. Mine is giving me the same issue. People tell me they can't hear me at all, or I sound like I am stuck in a well, or that I am ignoring them. I've tried a couple of things but to no avail. I believe it has something to do with noise cancellation. I just turned off voice enhancement and voice privacy and it still seems to give me this problem but I am gonna try it out for longer. I am with Verizon. Let me know if you guys have any ideas.
Yes I have noticed that when the phone is right to me ear im ok but a couple of inches away and people say echo or sounds like Im stuck in a wall. I mean weird? has anyone tried a factory reset
I've been struggling with this issue since I purchased the phone on the 17th. I've also noted significantly worse signal in relation to my G2. I swapped out my phone this past weekend and the problem exists with the replacement.

We had this problem with the Verizon g2 when it first came out. Tried swapping devices, Sims, and nothing worked. Eventually LG updated the radio which fixed the issue (if I remember correctly).

In vehicle bluetooth works every time. I had one case where my wife could barely hear me through the phone (we both have the g3) but all other calls have been fine thus far. Hopefully this gets addressed in the first update.
Still An Issue...
Any update on a fix for this?
I just spent a month calling VZ about how people have trouble hearing us (we have two G3s with the same problem). One was replaced and people still have trouble hearing us.
The SG3 was never this bad with calls.
I have not tried my G3 with the Prius Bluetooth, but on every call so far over Verizon or Google Voice/Hangouts the Voice quality whenever I enquired has been reported to be fine.
The only issue I have noticed is that sometimes when I hold the phone right-handed my finger underneath it covers the Mic hole.
Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
I have a bad habit of bringing the mic away from my mouth at about a 45 degree angle while keeping the phone to my ear. When I do this, I get reports of the echo / can't hear me. Bringing it back to the proper position seems to correct the issue.
I have an ad hoc solution that seems to work so far:
Use the speakerphone while on the call. Totally obnoxious in social settings, but if you're somewhere private, it works.
Turn off Bluetooth. I did this a couple of time no one complained not being able to hear me.
Speaking to Verizon is pretty much useless. One rep did a fancy dance to say this is a software issue and they can't do anything for me at this point.
Add me to the list of Verizon LG G3 owners with poor call quality. You guys have described exactly what I am experiencing. People tell me I fade out, sound tinny, sound underwater etc. I have tried the phone in a case (OtterBox) no case, different parts of my house, different positions holding it, making sure I'm not covering the mic etc.
Also did a factory reset and ran the phone in "Safe Mode" as well
Same problems. Seems to happen on longer calls BTW and I have no troubles hearing people.
I am getting a solid -104 to -108 LTE signal and solid -89dbm CDMA and -88dbm 1xRTT signal.
Right now I am going to use BT exclusively and see what happens, but this is troubling since I make a lot of calls.
I never had this problem, in the same location my house, with my last phone a Droid Razr Maxx.
It gets pretty much the same signal levels.
Any ideas on this?
Is it a Verizon problem?
I bought this phone in BestBuy so I'm not really sure how to proceed to exchange it as I am past my 30 days?
Do I call Verizon?
Go back to Best Buy?
Call LG?
I've dealt with Verizon before and like the other person said, it's not a pleasant experience .
Help!
P.S Other than the call quality issue, this phone is incredible and I love it.

I have the same problem as many on here and it's frustrating. As great as the features on the phone are, it fails at its most basic task - making calls.
I quoted you to answer part of your question. I, too, got my G3 at Best Buy - 22 days ago to be precise. I finally got fed up with the call quality problem and spoke to Best Buy yesterday (and had the issue pop up mid call with them). Unfortunately, their return policy is 15 days. Beyond that you're forced to use a protection plan claim, if you have one, or work directly with LG for a repair - which would leave you without a phone for a few weeks while LG does its thing. It was also suggested that it could indeed be a software issue and a future update could fix the issue. But that does nothing for us now.

Thanks for the info Rodeojones.
I suspect it is a software bug.
I "think" I can still take out a protection plan with Verizon so I might do that just in case it gets worse.
I'm trying the BT headset exclusively now to see if that helps or changes things. So far nobody is complaining and also when I use the BT in my car, a crappy Jabra Freeway Speaker thing, nobody seems to complain either which leads me to believe that maybe the mic is doing something odd causing the phone to reduce the audio going out or something.
It certainly is disappointing having a top tier phone that has problems making phone calls.
@stang2003
You've described all the troubleshooting steps I've gone through as well. I am disappointed beyond words. I would at least be happy if there was some affirmation from Verizon or LG that this problem exists, but I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for it....

From what I am reading it seems this might be related to Verizon only.
Is anyone having these kinds of problems on a different carrier than Verizon?
I did find a number of threads regarding poor signal strength with the G3. Seems even the EU folks are having these problems.
Maybe both call quality/microphone problems are actually related to a poor radio signal?
Ok, so an entire day using my Blue Ant ancient T1 BT and not a single complaint about fading in and out etc. In fact I was talking to a person on BT and it was fine. I disconnected the BT, did not move the phone which was right in front of me, put it on speaker and within a couple of minutes he was claiming he couldn't hear me, fading in and out etc. I switched to regular ear (no speaker phone) and same thing with fading in and out. I went back to BT and talked for about 10 additional minutes and it was fine.
My preliminary conclusion, and it's really too early to tell, is that it's somehow related to the mic in the phone as BT doesn't seem to have the problem.
Can anyone else confirm this?
Test with BT and see if you get complaints from people on the other end that you are fading etc.

[T-Mobile] Poor Call Quality, Maybe Resolved With Case?

Since getting the V10, I've noticed a lot of people on the other end of the phone not being able to hear me. I get a lot of "huh?" or "are you there?". This is odd since this phone (assuming because of band 12?) has a substantially better signal than any previous phone I've had. I am getting full LTE signal in places where I previously got hardly 3G with my Nexus 5. I've seen others say that they experience similar issues and have gone into the store to get a replacement. I've tried turning WiFi and VoLTE both on and off, then testing, but still seem to get call issues.
Jump to today; I received my case finally, snapped it on and then made a few phone calls. I had clear conversations, and the other side of the call could hear my just fine. This may just be coincidence, but I'm wondering if putting a case on the phone and covering the metal rails has helped improve call quality.
This may be a longshot, but I'm curious if anyone has any input on this.
That's interesting. I noticed that I can't trigger google now without raising my voice slightly.
When my phone switches from LTE 4 to 12 it's usually in deep building or elevator, where on my AT&T or old Tmo I wouldn't have had signal at all..
I have no issues with "Ok Google".. check your mics, not plugged?
Nobody can ever hear me in calls on my v10. It's very frustrating.

I have a similar experience. Considering this is supposed to have Qualcomm's new super duper antenna tech I'd expect better. I'm still hopeful they can fix it with a driver or something.
I haven't had any issues whatsoever with mine; an absolutely fantastic phone all around. I do have a T-Mobile V10, but I'm using it on AT&T. Have you considered that this could be a carrier/coverage issue?

It honestly could be me. I'm a relatively soft spoken person, but with my Note 4 (3 mics vs 2 on the V10) I could literally whisper "OK Google" and it would trigger.
This is SO discouraging. I've had my V10 for 2 weeks & have had same problem since the first call I made out of the T-Mobile store. My boss, clients & family are fed up. I talked to TMo customer service, they put me through various tests and "try this, try that" but nothing helped. Today was day 14, last chance to swap it with no re-stocking fee (so I'm told), and local store is out of stock, so they ordered a new one to be shipped to my house by Wed. and I'll send my unit back. If this is a design flaw, then I should have swapped for a G4 or a Samsung model. Very disappointed!
I disable the noise cancellation and voice clarity. So far my calls been good with those off. My g3 had a similar issue
I have noticed if I turn wifi off it goes away. I initially turned wifi calling off but with wifi still on I have the problem. With it off the calls are just fine.

how do you turn noise cancellation off?
Zero issues here. I noticed that I had trouble hearing people when I was using WiFi Calling. Turning it off solved that.
