[Q] How do you install the OLDER android market - Motorola Photon 4G

It's funny because I installed it once but yesterday I installed the alien Rom because I couldn't install the Camera.apk file so I just started from scratch installing a Rom with the camera.apk already install........so I went to the market and see it's the new one, I hate it.......so I went to applications and deleted market/ the update market file too........then place older version of android market in system/app (r/w) using supermanager and also selected the permission button. Then clicked install. "application not installed"!!!!!! Really so then I was without a Market app so I had to reinstall the Alien Rom. Things are so complicated with this device the Evo you could just replace the apk you're good to go. Deoxed
update: I got it. talk about head------ache. all I did was deleted the market app and replace with the "right" old market.apk file. then i had to delete the updater market.apk file because it kept updating the market app. so I did that and got a error type message which closed the market app down. so Then i went installed the update market.apk file again which didn't install so I said screw this deleted the update market.apk file went back to market app and it works now.... so I dunno
update2: I knew it was too good to be true. Yeah the market.apk installed right but it doesn't download apps. I also tried different market.apk version, then it force close again. Screw this i'm just going to find another Rom that hopefully let's you simply install a APK file. after googling, all this stuff about use ADB/android SDK to install a simple apk app this isn't for me. *sad face So yeah I'll just settle with the new android market forget customizing my phone yep.......

just "push" it to system/app? I heard that term before but not really sure what you mean unless just drop the market.apk file off in system/app without installing it. Well right now I have the new android market installed with the update.apk file.

Push/Copy. Same thing really, you should just be able to delete out the app and copy the old market into /system/app. Might not hurt to delete the market in the davlik cache as well.

10 posts? umm yea lol. well what I did was went to supermanager(explorer) then went to the old market.apk that's on my sd card click installed ----> "application not installed" maybe I have to install directely on the phone? Ok let's try that--------> "application not install" like does the photon require a "special" type of apk app that only works on the Photon. gosh. Like does your rom have to be doexed or something?
I'm running Alien1 rom......but can someone help because now I'm without android mark
update: wait I think I'm getting somewhere. I deleted the market.apk app then paste the "older" version. then hit run and boom the newer version installed. hmmmmm must not have the right "old" version.

Not exactly sure what my post count has to do with anything. However I'm glad you figured it out. Just an FYI though, when you update an app that comes preloaded on a rom it won't replace that app instead it'll append a "1" onto the new filename and use that instead hence why you needed to delete the updated file before it would recognize the old market that you pushed into the /system/app folder.

10 posts or not, he seems to know more than you about this, and he is right. You take the apk file and move it to system/app in your phone memory. You can do this with adb push, or use root explorer to put it there. Don't assume that because someone has a low post count they don't know what they are talking about.

You can also uninstall updates from the application manager. It'll re-update to the latest release, though.

I already knew this. That's why i went ahead and replace the files. My problem was why isn't the app working correctly. That seems to be a buggy phone issue because the apk file is in system/app

you can always uninstall the market update then use titanium backup to freeze market updater. When I did it on my Photon I installed the older version of Market (2.2something...) and then used terminal to run about 3 commands that disabled market updater. cant for the life of me find the instructions I followed, but then perhaps my post count isnt high enough for the OP either. Because you know in order to know ANYTHING you have to have a high post count.

Swype: Parsing could not be installed

This is the first time i've EVER and i will say EVER encountered this issue (for me of course)
I deleted swype.apk from system/app
deleted libswypecore.so from system/lib
rebooted (like 3 times)
and when i click on swype installer, login, and choose SWYPE FULL to install
after a while it says "parsing error not installed " something in that area.
What can i do to make it actually work?
Currently i have no swype, and without swype, my life is ruined.
a bad download, swype tweeted they uploaded the incorrect full version.
Also, why in the world are you using the full version? You only speak/need English. The lite version should work no problem.

I thought full was like... the whole swype system, while beta was parts of it.

Anyways, are you saying that they tweeted neither of the swype *full AND english/spanish* don't work?

so you tired the new updated fixed version? What rom are you using? Couldn't you put swype in that build and then flash it? Just trying to think outside the box is all.
Yes, and i'm using that Sweet Honey one.
Uhm, okay so i did TRY to "think outside the box"
I had a previous version of swype i kept on my SD Card.
I installed that.
Went to Swype Installer.
It recognized the swype version
i logged in.
Then it said "registration failed"
I have the swype keyboard, but no swype gestures or library.
I request that someone goes to system/lib/
and finds libswypecore.so
copies theirs, and gives it to me, so i can use it.
It would be VERY appreciated!
You do realize any tie to swype needs to be removed, then reboot... You can't install swype beta when you already have swype.
Correct.
As far as i know, and this has worked before...
Removing the apk from system/app
and the lib file from system/lib
and rebooting
removes swype.

Go to root explorer then the root directory. Search swype, delete all references. Reboot into recovery, wipe cache and dalvik cache, install the beta.
Edit: not the sd card, just the system files.

Turns out me not uninstalling swype installer was the problem :O
Must have had some corrupt data. Usually it will auto update if it's an older version that may cause a problem.
The beta doesn't auto update, you have to open the installer.
The installer I meant..when you open it the installer will update to the latest version then you can check for swype updates.
I had the same issue. Make sure you reboot your phone after you remove the files, then make sure you use the stock browser to download the installer, don't use skyfire or opera or any of those. I had the same issue when i was using skyfire. used the google browser and it worked fine. The website says not to use certain browsers or it won't work.

market gone! can not get it back! tried many options! please help!

i havent been around here for a long time. i just upgraded to workshed's gingerbread, and metamorphed darkhorse over it. i wanted to be extra fancy, so i went and tried to give myself a blueish market. the link in the darkhorse thread was broken, so i grabbed the blue market i had been using. i followed the instructions on the darkhorse page, which said to remove:
Vending.apk out of system/app
com.android.vending out of data/data
com.android.vending-1.apk out of data/app
from there i adb push'ed my Vending.apk to the proper place. but nothing happened on the phone despite confirmation via adb. i rebooted phone, still no luck.
i tried this over and over with different markets of all versions and colors. i tried adb push and adb install. nothing works... all i want is my market back.. can anyone help?
Reflash the gapps package and you should be back to normal.

Please flash a gapps zip, you can grab it in the same thread as you did gingerbread. You have to flash the gapps after you flash a rom, that will install ur market, etc.
forgot to mention, i tried that too! after flashing gapps failed i tried to pull the market from it and manually install it, to no avail..
All I can think of is to clear your phone off and redo it all without the theme. You could use blackened gingerbread.

Swype v3.0 won't install

I'm running Project V(6-11-11) w/ Bali 1.6.5uv. I just got an email to update my swype. So I download swype installer, delete my version of swype using titanium backup, download new version, go to install and everthing is going great. Then it says "application not installed".
I've tried a couple of times always with the same results.
Anybody else having this problem or know what I'm doing wrong?.....thanks
Use root explorer to search for all swype related files, delete them. Then run new updater

You should only have to delete Swype.apk in /system/app and libSwypeCore.so in /system/lib. Reboot and it should install then.
That worked jneal9, thanks. It was the libSwypeCore that was holding it up. TB deleted the apk.
Good job, as always for updates, make sure you go to the Root, as this has happened before, swype is better if not Awesome. Good new update.

[Q] How to update market

Is there a way to force my phone to update to the new android market? I never got pushed the update and still have the same market since when I got my phone in July.

Whether or not you're rooted, you can grab the new updated Market .apk file from anybody who has posted.
Simple command through adb: adb install -r c:\downloads\Market.apk .
This should move the apk file into /data/app, which should not require root access and will load the updated version of the Market.
This method is used for most of Google products which come on the device in /system/app, but later an updated apk is released. The internal android package manager knows to grab the most recent version and to check both /data/app and /system/app in order to determine the most recent version.
Hope that helps!
My girlfriend's Evo 3D is in the same boat, still on the old market, so she doesn't have access to the books, music, or movies. She's a bit leary of me downloading an app from a forum (I know, really no harm), is there a way to force the update from within the market itself? If not, any reliable download links?
Edit: Actually, I'm curious. Does anyone that just has a stock Evo3D have the new market? Seems all the talk on the forums (after doing several searches) is about downloading the new market apk, not getting pushed an update.

I just bumped the new market for you. It's in the theme and apps section here on this forum. Check it out. Nd you don't have to be rooted just uninstall old market and install this one.
Or if your rooted and you are not near a computer just just root explorer ( or whatever else you use to access the root of your phone) and go to system/apps and search for vending apk delete that one and replace it with the one you just downloaded. Set permissions to

Then you shld be good to go. If the new market doesn't show up just reboot your phone

To clarify, as I posted above, you don't have to remove the old market. System partition is locked for non root users. Only have to load the new market apk file into the /data/app directory.
The package manager is intelligent enough to check version numbers on both .apk files and determine which one is the newest version.
Also, as quoted in my previous post above, this is the same approach taken by any application shipped stock on a system that is later updated. The updated apk file is placed in /data/app and the original stock apk is left in /system/app as the /system partition is considered read only and should not be modified, by Android operating standards.

On my NS4G, the market update came along with Google Wallet and the Android 2.3.7 OTA.
Hope that extra information helps eliminate an extra step for those leary of modifying their system partition and provides more information to the internal workings of Android!

Its a question of deleting Vending.apk and Market Updater .apk from System/APPs
Replace Vending .apk with an old version .
No more no less than that .
jje
Thats what i thought but after trying so many time it seems this is not the case. When I delete it and replace it with root explorer nothing happens after the reboot, still the new market.
Then you are doing something wrong .
Root Explorer not deleting the file vending apk ??
Old vending apk not old ??/
Market updater left on phone ??
Delete files first reboot phone no market now = confirms deleted .
jje
Everything is correct. With root explorer go to system/app and delate market updater and phonesky.apk (no more vending.apk, this is replacment), download old Vending.apk 2.3.6 and paste it in system/app Reboot, still the new market I think its the problem with this new market, i never had this problem before the update, could easly replaced it. Now, its not working anymore.

Tried that also, doesnt work. I was using it before v 1.1.6 but now when i use it, nothing happens. Tried the new version 1.2 but i cant even open that version, it says something about closing apps that block adds. Im not using addfree or anything like that. Im on Criskelo rom V32. There are more people that started to say that they cant download nothing or change market anymore. Market v 3.3.11
The new market (3.3.11) has a new name, Phonesky.apk. Maybe you can remove that, and then install old market again?
