[Q] Clockwork Mod - Problems Installing a Second Time - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I took a stock GTab - 1.2 Branch (4349) and installed ClockWorkMod (CWM) v3028. CWM installed fine, and I attempted to install VEGAn-GE-7.1.0. That was not successful, so I went back to a stock ROM.
I'd like to give CWM another try, this time I am trying CWM 08, as recommended in some threads on these forums. I copied the CWM recovery folder and update.zip to the root of the GTab. However when I start the GTab by holding the power and volume up button, I get the following message at the Viewsonic screen, but nothing else happens:
Recovery key detected
Booting recovery kernel image
How do I get CWM to install?

Well you don't unless you nvflash to stock rom bootloader 1.1 as 08 is only compatible with bootloader 1.1 roms. Unless you have a specific rom that is only available for b/l 1.1 then there isn't any reason to swtich bootloaders. CWM 3.0.2.8 rev 5 is compatible with all b/l 1.2 roms.
What makes you think you are having a problem with CWM?

Thanks - I worked through it some more with NVFlash and got ClockWorkMod (CWM) going. I used the "NVFlash to Stock with CWM pre-installed" file from the "viewsonic gtab for dummies" site, and was able to use CWM to install a ROM. I installed Mountain Laurel 3.1.0 after reading about it on this site. The Gtab is working great now.
Thanks again, and my apologies to the system admins. I realized (after I posted) that this post belongs in the Q&A board vs the General board.

[Q] clockworkmod will not Install

I am new to the gtab, however I have read all the relevant post on the subject of installing roms.
Let me explain: Out of the box, I updated to 3588 as required. I rooted clockworkmod and it installed fine. I then rooted TnT lite 4.4.0 it also installed fine. got bored with that, for whatever reason I wanted to return to the stock rom. so I NVflash the gtab, thats when things went wrong. NV flash installed ok, but when I tried to reinstall clockworkmod, it would not boot into clockworkmod. after pushing the volume + and the power buttons, I noticed a extra line under the "detect a recovery key pressed" that said: "booting recovery kernel image" now that was not present the first time I installed clockworkmod.
What has happened? I would very much like to change this stock rom, and go back to something else. Is there a rom that can be installed without clockworkmod?
Please Help!
NVflash with cwm8
There are treads out there that explain how to flash and install clockworkmod 8 at the same time You will find if you search.

[Q] Help with recovery

Ok, so I have been running a Honeycomb rom but wasnt happy with it so I decided to try a different one. In the Roms directions, it said to be on a stock 1.2 rom. So I downloaded the one from its instructions and flashed. All went well, it booted into the stock rom with no problem. So I put the new HC rom on my sd and renamed to update.zip. I booted into recovery and noticed that the recovery was reverted back to the stock recovery. I thought, no big deal, Ill just flash the rom from that recovery. Well it kept aborting the install for some reason. Doesnt give an error, just says installation aborted. So I figured it was the recovery that was the problem. I downloaded CWM 0.8 and followed instructions, put the recovery folder and the update.zip on the sd card, I booted into recovery and the installation bar came up like it was installing, then switched back to the stock recovery. I assumed all went well and rebooted the device then powered off again and tried to boot into CWM, shows the three birds and the recovery key detected but doesnt go any further. I can power the device off and boot it back up into the stock rom but every time I try to boot into recovery, it does the same thing and gets stuck. Any help would be great.
CWM v8 isn't compatible with 1.2 branch.

[Q] Help! G-Tab won't boot into Recovery

Hi, I just brought my G Tablet and I have downloaded "ClockworkMod_Gtab_v08.zip" and copy the "update.zip and "recovery" into my internal SD Root dir.
I boot into recovery mood and ClockworkMod install but after reboot into recovery mood again, the screen freeze in "Booting recovery kernel image" and don't go into ClockworkMod screen (for more then 10 mins and have try rebooting it a few times).
The G Tab can still boot up normally in to TapnTap, everything seem working find and I can connect to my computer using USB cable. But just can't boot into recovery.
I wanted to install new rom, how do I make boot into ClockworkMod screen (recovery)?
Any help is welcome.
Thanks
Take a look at the recovery script and make sure it says sdcard vs sdcard- ext that's the only thing i can think of right now that May do that.

This is the symptom of installing the wrong cwm. You're on the 1.2 branch but you put the cwm for the 1.1 branch. You hosed your recovery. Go to my website and use code red in the "start here" page to recover.
Same thing I happened to me. I bought mine off Woot a few days back and it came with 1.2 bootloader (4349). No matter how many times I tried, I could never get back into recovery. Here are the steps I did to fix that:
1. You need to do nvflash to recover your stock recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861950) - I followed all steps in the "Installation" section.
2. After this, you should now have your stock recovery back. You're going to need to downgrade manually to 3588 - Just follow the "POST NVFlash" section on that same page.
3. Once you're done downgrading, should be able to install CWM without issue.
Problem solved!
Thanks goodintentions you save my G Tab, it works!
And now it can boot back into ClockworkMod recovery mode.
Your website is very good and informative. Good job.
Thanks again.
Thanks "goodintentions", You saved me as well
Followed your post and it worked.
Good information...thanks for the help!

nvflash for dummies not working
Bro I connected my gtab to my computer in apx mode and my computer couldn't see it. Went to device manager and apx device was absent. Needless to say connecting my gtab to the computer was as far as I could get. If it helps any, I'm currently running bottle of smoke. Where I screwed my tab up is when I opened up time manager and it had an ota update for the recovery I was using.... Shoulda known better than to select advent vega for the device when it was running on the 1.2 branch recovery. Any tips? I wanna change my time but I need my recovery up n running.

[Q] Problem installing ClockWorkMod v08

Hi,
I just bought my g Tablet and try to root it with VEGAn-Tab.
I followed the instruction on this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
While I was trying to install ClockWorkMod v08, copied the recovery and update.zip to the root directory on the internal memory. Reboot by holding the Power and Vol + button. These messages appeared on the top left corner.
Recovery key detected
Booting recovery kernel image
and the screen was frozen.
Do anyone how to resolve this problem?
Thank you!
Kelvin

If your tab is new you are probably on the 1.2 bootloader (b/l) branch. You can check your version in Setting, About. If you are on 1.2 branch & you want to switch to a 1.1 branch Rom you must nvflash to stock 1.1. Go here http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com for step by step instructions.

The link you gave me works!
Thanks a million! You Rock!
I did the same thing from 1.2, used CWM v 08 and got the same frozen screen with the same message when trying to enter CWM. I assume v. 08 was the wrong choice. Could you help me recover and get the proper version of CWM on my bootloader 1.2 (1.2-4349) tablet? thank you! BTW if I simply start up "normally" the tablet works as it did.

I have the same problem (i.e., when booting into CWM I get the "Recovery Key Detected-booting recovery kernel image" but it just freezes.
The difference is, I rooted and flashed to CM7 months ago! All went well and has been fine but now I want to experiment with other ROM's, ...but I am stuck.
I even tried to NVFlash back to the stock ROM but that failed also (I.e., installed the APX driver, etc but when I execute the Gtablet.bat, the "DOS" looking screen pops up, says it is starting nvflash, but nothing happens.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

[Q] Can someone explain to me how to use NVflash to install a Rom?

I've used NVflash to flash the 1.2 bootloader, but how Do I flash a rom using NVFLash?
It's best to just NVFlash the 1.2 firmware with clockword mod included, then use CWM to flash the custom rom.
http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/nvflash.htm - for NVFlash links that have CWM included.
http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/rom.htm - instructions on flashign via CWM, also has links to just about every available ROM.

Thank you so much for those links!! That really helped a gtab beginner like me!!!
APX Drivers for nvflash??
The more I read about nvflash, the more confusing it is. I currently have cwm 2.5 v.8. I'm also running a honeycomb rom. I also have drivers installed on my windows which detects the gtab; I think sees it as harymony something.
My question is that if I want to go into apx mode to nvflash, do I still need to install "special" drivers for apx modem, or will the existing drivers that I have installed will suffice? Thanks.
If you haven't already installed the driver you will probably need to. When you download a NvFlash package it will normally include a folder called 'usbdrivers' or something similar. Put the tablet into APX mode and plug in the usb cable. If it asks for a driver, which it probably will, point it to the .inf file inside the 'usbdrivers' folder and install.

Thanks for the info just trying to figure out the proper steps to take. I'm currently on BL1.1 and I'm considering jumping branches (to BL1.2). I read reobeet's post which basically says that it's best to go from stock bl1.1 (tnt build 3588) to stock bl1.2 (tnt build 4349) using nvflash for both stock roms. That post also said that it's best to be on stock recovery and NOT cwm!!
So basically, I should be on stock recovery BEFORE using nvflash to flash stock 3588 (bl1.1) and then flash stock 4349 (bl1.2). Does that sound right? I suppose after flashing stock 4349, I can flash cwm v.8 or cwm 5504?
Thank you for your help!
There are a few different ways to change your bootloader. Read the info on this site for lots of good info, instructions and links to anything you will need to download.
I switched basically the way you described, by flashing the stock rom for 1.1, then immediately flashing stock 1.2 with CWM included. Make sure you do a data/cache wipe either before the first flash or after the second flash before you boot into TNT.
Another option would be to install the stock image using CWM from here, then make sure you are on the stock recovery not CWM (1.1 recovery images here if you need it) and take the OTA update to 4349. You can then install CWM and whatever rom you want without needing to use NvFlash.
To directly answer your question, if you nvflash you don't need to be on the stock recovery first as it will be replaced by whatever recovery version is included in the nvflash package. If you want to install using CWM, make sure you read that thread I linked to. You could then either take the OTA update or nvflash up to 1.2 but the OTA will require the stock recovery. Either way, make sure you have wiped data/cache before you try to boot into TNT. Before you use nvflash, see this thread. Make a backup of your .bct file and use it any time you use nvflash.
Last, (sorry this is getting pretty long) do not use CWM v8 on 1.2 bootloader. It is made for 1.1 and will cause problems. Use 3028 r5 for most 1.2 roms, or 5504 only if you are going to install ICS, in which case you will need to use the nvflash package included in the instructions in the ICS thread.
