I've been stuck in a weird place for some time with my phone. After I installed clockwork mod, backed up, installed some flavour of FroYo, and made the mistake of trying to flash back my old back up without properly wiping things have been getting weird. I can use ODIN to flash fresh ROMs, but I always get a bunch of FCs at startup, and most apps don't work. I tried to do all kinds of tricks to completely wipe the internal SD, but there is always some remnants of old fun hanging about causing cascading errors and FCs. No matter what I try to do, MyBackupPro and Rommanager is always present, but not working.
How I can completely rid myself of anything not stock ROM?
I've finally gotten back to root ADB, after a long and hard battle. I believe this may hold the key to salvation for my Vibrant.
Any and all suggestions are much appreciated!
Things I've already tried:
EUGENE373_SamsungS_Froyo_PDA -> Stock 2.1 T959UVJFD
EUGENE373_SamsungS_Froyo_PDA -> battery pull -> Stock 2.1 T959UVJFD
Stock 2.1 T959UVJFD -> EUGENE373_SamsungS_Froyo_PDA
Bionix1.9.zip - would not install due to some error I can't recall right now. Will update.
Factory wipe - from Settings menu
Wipe in Clockworkmod menu
Wipe all in adb shell
The weird *2767*3855#* factory wipe
UPDATE:
Strangest thing happened: I flashed an old ROM back onto the phone with Odin 1.52, then the Updated Stock 2.1 also via Odin the usual FC-ing was still there. Then I rebooted into recovery, reinstalled the Clockworkmod recovery menu, installed the root-update.zip in order to have root shell access. Then I pushed VibrantDeodexed1_2.zip and Vibrantfroyo_R3.zip on to the sd card. I tried to apply the VibrantDeodexed1_2.zip, but it aborted due to some catalog not present. However, I did notice that the installation erased /system and deleted some files, and I had the notion to try and install the VibrantFroyo_R3.zip. The installation succeeded, and Lo and Behold!
the phone has returned to the land of the living! Wohoo!!
I do not fully understand how this can be, but there is no Force Closing of programs any longer. What a relief!
Thanks to everybody who contributed ideas!
If you're having problems, back up whatever data you want to keep to your computer. Go download eugenes 2.2 that doesn't brick. Flash that, do a battery pull once it's done (don't reboot). Then go get a stock eclair file, flash that with odin and check repartition. This solved every problem I had from flashing way too many roms.
Yea, when in doubt I thank the deities for Eugene and flash his "Froyo that doesn't brick" followed by the stock JFD firmware.

Yeah, that's the weird part.. It doesn't really delete anything. Files are still there, and so are the un-wanted system files, too.
Does anyone know if I can manually partition the sdcard?
Had a similar issue, and couldn't fully erase my files. Figured out how to completely erase everything, before you proceed, backup your files and be ready to Odin. In rom manager, enable advanced mode in settings, then use the flash alternate recovery option. That set my current cwm version to 2.5.1.2, now when I reboot to cwm i have a menu that says something similar to "sd and storage" and within that menu are options to completely format all of the internal storage. Be careful in there, you can delete everything, incl the sd ext, but I think this is what you are looking for.
Edited - I rebooted and checked the menus, mounts and storage in cwm is what you are looking for after flashing the alternate recovery, I can confirm this removes remnants that an Odin repartition or factory format still leaves behind, let me reiterate, backup your personal files, cause this does remove everything
After formatting, Odin away

When I boot into recovery, I always have to reinstall packages to get to the CWM recovery menu. I tried to clear everything from the mounts and storage submenu; I cleared system, cache and data, then flashed stock eclair. STILL the same applications and files sit on the internal SD.
When performing the wiping, all looks normal. It does take a little time, and the system reports that all is going according to plan, yet no files are deleted.
What can possibly make the phone act this way? Are there no super secret samsung-technician codes that allow me to completely wipe clean the face of the sdcard?
When you get into the storage and mounts menu, I would format everything given what you're experiencing. Format boot, data, system, cache, and sdcard. Dont format the sd ext, thats the physical card. After formatting all of those your phone should be an odin ready blank slate, mine was. Hope this helps.

this has to be one of the most useful threads. just last night i was messing with rom manager and enabled advanced settings, BEEFORE reading this thread. I've done so much monkeying, but didn't keep a journal or log, so ive got **** from so many hacks and tweaks (mods and themes)...
thanks, im gonna wipe this ****er clean.
Good Info..but moved to Q&A

This is exactly what I tried yesterday. I'll try it again a few times to see if I can find a way.

I was hoping that would help you friend, that process wiped mine clean of all remnants. Good luck in getting her back into a functional state.
After reading som more, contacting Samsung Service, I've decided to send the phone in for service. [sigh]
I've learnt a lot about ADB, pushing and pulling files, rooting, unrooting, swapping ROMS and whatnot. Still, the phone is stuck in that weird place where I cannot delete files.
Hopefully the service team can fix this poor, misguided phone
Hi everyone,
First time poster but have been reading and browsing for a couple month now and have been able to find fixes for all the issues on my own. I have however had this one issue from the beginning and have not found any fixes or even the issue being mentioned (been using TnTLite the entire time, going up the versions from early 3's to now 4.4).
When my Gtab goes to sleep or even sits idle for a while my WiFi just stops working. The connection is still there and Gtab thinks it's connected but I can't access the net until I turn Wifi off and on and then it works until I let it sit or the screen shuts off. This is annoying at the least and I would love to fix it, even if I have to go to a different ROM (but I do like TnTLite above others).
Does anyone find version 4.4 more laggy than 4.2.5? Gtab is just not as responsive and I seem to have a Flash issue where net videos crash after working for 1-15min.
Also I have CWM 0.8 and when I try to flash with a MicroSD I keep going back into CWM. I changed SDCARD to SDCARD2 in the common file but still my card is not being read. Basically if I want to install the stock ROM and nothing else I can't cause it only boots into CWM and not the SD card. I do have the card formated in FAT32 at 2048. Am I missing something, do I need to uninstall CMW first somehow?
If you re-read the first post in the TnT Lite 4.4 thread, you'll see that you can toggle the CWM back to stock recovery with some built in commands.
Yeah, I saw that as one of the options but I want to be able to patch via the micro SD card and CWM seems to be interfering with that. I mean if I revert to stock with CWM I will still have CWM installed. I want the true original state but more than that I want the MicroSD card recovery to work.
Switching to stock recovery removes CWM and will allow you to use the MicroSD to install. All you have to do is put a file named "command" in the recovery folder on your MicroSD card with the following contents:
--update_package=SDCARD2:/update.zip
When you reboot into recovery it will find that command and execute the update.zip on your MicroSD card.
Thank you!
It was my suspicion that CWM is interfering but I also had recovered from the SD card a couple times even with CWM installed, at least I think so, but it is good to know. I'm also still having issues with net video crashing now and again. The screen goes white and I have to reboot. Started when I installed 4.4 and now that I reverted back to 4.2.5 it is much better but still I had it happen just now and it never did before 4.4. The upgrade to 4.4 also slowed the tablet down which did improve as I went back to 4.2.5.
Try going into CWM and wipe dalvik cache and also do fix permissions, usually cures most of those problems after going from one version to another.
What exactly am I loosing when I wipe delvik cache, do you know? And thanks for the suggestion, haven't tried that yet.

I am experiencing the same issues. I assume you have this problem with ICS roms, because that's where I get those problems. I am currently running WEUI and half my apps are not at all working. I have also flashed back to stock, tried ICS Slim and MIUI v4, but no luck. I am also getting issues, while listening to music, where the song will keep on playing, but the app will ask me if I want to FC or wait. This has only happened recently. I really do not feel like going back to 2.2 or 2.3. Any help is greatly appreciated
Have you guys tried fixing the permissions?
That usually fixes most force close problems.

Tried it, but no luck. Only option now is to flash a different ics rom, and see if that works. If all else fails I can always go back to bionix.
2 questions:
1 Can you see your internalSD with a file explorer?
2 Did you try wiping /cache and /dalvik-cache and rebooting?
I find a good wipe cure many things wrong (with my phone too )

1. Yes
2. Yes, usually before I flash a different rom/reflash rom to try and fix this I wipe data and wipe cache patition and dalvik cache.
OK. The first question was to make sure you still had access to your internal and not sole sort of veiled encryption error.
Let me think about somethings and ill get back to you. I am wondering if it wouldn't be a bad idea to format /data and /system to make sure that you don't have any ghosts lurking. If you do, make sure you back up SDs contents to PC just in case.

All those apps are still force closing on 2.2. Could it be, because I'm restoring them from titanium backup?
I'll try to backup SD onto my Computer and then format sd. It's probably some ghost file that is causing my phone to have errors. It probably is a file that has to do with MIUI since I flashed that as it happened.
Btw thanks for trying to help
Edit: I formatted sd card, put all the files back onto sd card, restored apps with tiatnium backup, but still no luck. I even factory reset, wiped cache and dalvik cache after formatting sd, but still no luck.
Thanks everyone for trying to help. I figued out the problem. Titanium backup was causing all those apps to have issues. I uninstalled all user apps via tb and download them from the market. I am getting no force close what so ever, with dl apps from market.
Usually when that happens from TB, it is from restoring system files (they show in red in the TB list of apps).
I use it to restore user apps + data every time I flash a new ROM, but I never use it to restore system apps, and I don't have any problems with it.
Since you've already restored from the market, you could try running TB and deleting it's backup data and then running a new batch backup of user apps (and no system apps) to have the freshest copy of your apps from a working system. That should allow you to restore in the future, hopefully without issue.

This could be a problem with using TB. TB gives you the option of restoring apps+data. If you're coming from a 2.2 rom to 4.0, you don't want to keep the data from a 2.2 rom. What you can do is restore apps without the data. That should solve your problem.
I have been researching this problem for a couple days now and have not found any solutions please hlep before I go crazy. I have been using MeanRom for quite awhile now and love it....(great rom). I had no problems all the way up to 3.2, but then I flashed 3.6 (I also flashed the new radio). Every thing seemed to work great my phone was finaly running very smooth and not having any slowdown periods. I then noticed that my ringtones on my sd card did not show up for me to choose in the personalize app. After this I found that my pictures in my gallery and music in my HTC music app dont show up. When I use my akimbo audiobook player it finds the audiobooks on the sd card fine, also es explorer shows all the music and pictures are on my sd card and can be played or viewed through es explorer.
Equipment: EVO lte, 32 gb pny sd card
Things I have done to fix this problem:
--tested my sd card and it appears to be the real thing and functioning great
--tried another sd card had the same results
--tried coping my music, ringtones and pictures to internal memory......results same problem
--tried coping my ringtones to system ringtone folder and it still would not recognize them.
--copied the SD card to my computer, formated it and then copied data back.......result the same problem as before.
--did a system wipe, and factory reset, clean install of Mean rom 3.8, 3.9, and 4.0 .......result the same problem as above.
--removed all data from internal memory, did a clean install of Meanrom 4.0.......result the same problem
--used superwipe did a clean install of meanrom 4.0.....result the same problem
--did a data restore back to previous 3.2 meanrom.....result everything (music, pictures and ringtone) work again, but battery drain is horrible.
I have spent hours flashing roms, and searching the internet for a fix and can't find anything that works please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks in advance for your help.
I had the same problem with mine on a different Rom. All was fine until the flashes based on the new OTA base. I hope someone with an answer jumps in here.

That is exactly where the problem started is when the MeanRom went to the new 2.13 base.
Had a similar issue with gallery not recognizing pics from sdcard2. Was on stock, rooted. Took phone back for secure element brick before I tried anything.
Ask me about my ability to annoy complete strangers!
So I kind of got around this by clearing everything. Doing a clean install of MeanRom 3.4 (last rom before 2.13 base). rebooted, added all my info for registering the phone. rebooted to recovery, cleared cache and dalvik, installed MeanRom 4.0 then used titanium back up to restore apps but not system data. Doing this got me ringtones, music and pictures to start working again.
Note: after installing updates to some apps in the Play store lost the SD card again. Used Titanium backup to revert apps back to pre update status and SD came back. Guessing it is an app causing problems but not sure since I had this problem even after a clean install of MeanRom 4.0 prior to installing my apps.

Can u figure out what app it was?
When I have some time I will try and let you know.
I was running AOKP 4.3 and downloaded the latest 10/30 update. I flashed in CWM recovery and everything took as normal. I wiped cache and dalvik and then rebooted. Apps updated as normal and lockscreen presented. I unlocked and immediately received two force closes (timely & swype) if I click them or not, if I unlock or not, the phone will crash and reboot every 6 or so seconds. Luckily, if I'm quick, I can reboot into recovery. I am in CWM but my external SD card won't mount so I can't load anything onto it and attempt a new flash and the only rom file on my internal SD is the one that got me in trouble here. I've gone back into recovery and attempted to wipe data/factory reset/etc. and nothing changes. Internal storage won't mount when I'm connected to my computer with a cable.
I don't mind losing everything and starting from scratch. I've tried to seek out my own info but there is SOO many threads and videos and I don't know where to start. Can someone please tell me the most efficient way to get back to a clean start? I was on JellyBeans from 1-22 and looking back that was probably more my speed. I shouldn't have tried to switch to 4.3 at all. I was able to run AOKP for about two months without issue but I seem to be out of my element here.
Can anyone smarter than me please take pity on me here? Sorry to waste your time as well.
Try just wiping the system, reflash rom and gapps. I think this keeps your apps in tact, if just not just use tb and restore. Otherwise full wipe sounds necessary, but not horrible. Just restore everything with tb
