Hmm....I've never seen that happen before. Anyone else have this issue?
I have exactly the same problem, remember seeing something about the hosts file, but can't find anything on search!

I have the same problem with both the Dolphin for Tab and Stock browsers, but not the Firefox Nightly. So that leads me to believe it's a Webkit issue. And yes, it is extremely annoying.
Definitely to do with the hosts file. Just renamed mine hosts.old, rebooted and the problem has gone. I used to have adfree, uninstalled it, but the hosts file still had all the adfree entries in it.

So what I take from that is all AdFree does is a onetime update of the hosts file to block known advertisements (and updates with new definitions I'm sure), and so by deleting AdFree and renaming the old hosts file the tablet creates a new host file without any urls to block?
Damn, that's a shame. I, too, have AdFree, and I love it.

I had adfree working on my Galaxy I7500 ( GAOSP ) in it worked just fine with my Weathereye app. Now that I have the Atrix with the Weathereye app, Adfree just don't remove the ads from it. Anyone else have an issue ?
Working fine for me. Connect your Atrix to the computer, run adb and try "su" (or do this in Terminal on your phone). Maybe you don't really have root access.
Don't have Terminal showing in the apps list. I rooted via aRoot if it matters. Titanium Backup works fine. To be perfectly honest, I have very little experience with adb. Refresh my memory to try su via adb. I feel like a noob ...
EDIT: Found ADB for Dummies. I do, in fact, have su access. Any chance you can download Weathereye and see if you get ads at the bottom ?? I wonder if its a difference in phones that's causing this ...
Just installed it. No ads here, brotha. I know what you're talking about though - I've seen them before.
Try running Cache Cleaner and/or restarting your phone. There could be DNS info still lurking in the background pulling the ads.
Put a check by Symlink and also you could try doing Revert and then Download and install Hosts again if that doesn't work. Just keep buggering with it and it should work. I have an AT&T Atrix but my buddy has a Bell one and we got his rooted and ran Adfree last night with success. Sometimes it just takes some tinkering.
P.S. Maybe uninstall it and reinstall it after doing the Adfree stuff too. Trying to throw all the tips I can think of. I know that ads freakin' SUCK!!
Thanks for the tips, I'll play some more and see what I get. I'll let you know !
I have AdFree and it works on all apps so far. Only have about 20 apps downloaded, though.

Well, I am at a loss. I uninstalled weathereye. Downloaded cachecleaner and android assistant. Reverted, then rebooted. Ran cachecleaner, re-downloaded hosts. Checked Symlink. Rebooted phone and re-installed Weathereye. Damned ads still appear. Grrrr !! I know this app will run without ads, I have done it before. I am convinced myself I am not insane, but that could change soon.
Well I have tried just about everything. No ads in Angry Birds, but they do persist in Weathereye. Oh well, guess I'll have to live with it. Maybe it'll sort itself out someday.
You could always replace the hosts file, its a bit more complex but it stops every ad, in the browser or anywhere else.

this is likely due to AdFree not having the updates to the ad sites. AdFree works by replacing your hosts file with a list of known ad sites that loop back to itself, so that you are never presented the ad. if one app is still showing ads, then AdFree needs to update their master list to add in that site

The thing is, is that I had no ads in this app when I was using AdFree with my Galaxy. That's partly I am a little frustrated and confused why its not working. Its not the end of the world if I can't get it removed, but it is annoying that these ads are links that sometimes I accidently hit.
i'm having the same exact problem, except my adfree doesn't block anything.
I found this thread: Block ads on your android phone. Haven't tried it yet, but I see no reason why it won't work.
No luck. I replaced the hosts file in /system/etc and no dice. I saw a hosts file in /etc/, should I be replacing that too ??
Anyone have any updated info on getting AdFree to work on the Atrix?
I rooted with Gladroot, rebooted the phone, cleared the cache yet in every app I'm seeing ads.
This is driving me nuts because I had no problems with this on my Milestone or Galaxy S. *sigh* Help!...
Really? I just got a Bell Atrix and put Adfree. Superuser requested access, I granted it, updated the .hosts and boom - no ads. Did this to a friend's Bell Atrix and another friend's AT&T Atrix and boom - no ads.
Just did it to my wife's Desire Z last night too because I put a new ROM on there... and no ads. Are you sure you guys are allowing Superuser? I don't know why the heck it works on every phone I do it to but not on phones for people here? Have you explored all the options in Adfree or used it on a wireless network?

It started with no ads (like for 15min), but now it's not working at all. I did the reboot, cleared the cache, and even installed Busybox and ads are everywhere. I tried to redownload, but adfree says I'm up to date.
This is driving me nuts because I never had a problem with this on other phones.
Also I did the opt out of ads in the market as well and that didn't work either:
http://phandroid.com/2011/04/16/google-letting-users-opt-out-of-ad-targeting-via-market/
Looks like a couple of people in the comments section of that page are having the same issue?...
I noticed the other day that in the /etc directory ( not the system/etc/ directory ) that there is a hosts file, a hosts.allow file and a hosts.deny file. I wonder if I copy everything that adfree put in the host file and put it into the host.deny file if that would fix it ...
Hi, I made this account just to post a reply to this thread. I have a GladRooted Bell Atrix and am using Adfree. I noticed it worked before then suddenly stopped...
What I now realized, it works when I am on Wifi!!! but not on the Bell network!! So now how do we get it to work when on the Bell Network???
I am thinking this has to do with the Bell's version of the Atrix software since this is not an issue for AT&T users or for other Bell customers on other phones.

So ive been trying to find a way to delete these locked bookmarks. Every method I've tried points to a file that's not on the phone (/system/etc/motorola/com.android...) Any suggestions?

Been trying to do the same thing with no results.
Found one that worked. Goto the market and install Skyfire. You can edit the bookmarks all you want. Back on the system default browser, the changes will be applied after the app is restarted. Once the pesky Verizon locked down bookmarks are nuked, remove Skyfire. Viola.

Rebooted my whole phone just in case maybe task manager was stupid and didn't kill Browser fully. Nope...

I really don't want to SBF my phone just because of this stupid stock browser phail, so I'm just going to go ahead and try out a couple of those non-stock browsers and just delete the browser app entirely...
I've tried Dolphin, but not Aurora. First stop, then

If you delete the stock browser you will have problems with Voice Search and other google apps.
Also Aurora is not for the faint of heart its Firefox's alpha builds.

Oh right, derp, I use that on my computer Wasn't aware it was on mobile though.
Thanks for that, saved me from actually having to SBF. The reboot issue went away after I stopped using the stock Browser.
Personally, I used an app called Bookmarks Manager.

I never had an issue after removing them with it, even though I use the stock browser and have other bookmarks.

I don't think it's the apk itself is broken, but it looks for those locked bookmarks when you open the bookmarks tab and when it can't find them, it borks out because of the lack of error handling.
Atleast I think - the bookmarks aren't part of the app so removing them wouldn't break the actual app.

Did you delete all bookmarks that were stored? I did and I had FC when I tried to access the bookmarks. What worked for me was just bookmarking google.com, then trying to access the bookmarks again, and everything was gone except the new google.com bookmark.
That's odd... I haven't seen an FC on the phone after doing the removal. Going in and out of history or bookmarks yet nothing causing any issues.

That may be the root of the problem. I think I read somewhere the stock browser is looking for at least one bookmark.
When I remove the bookmarks, I usually wipe them all out and have none.
Maybe the app messed up the data somehow?

menu -> manage apps -> All (tab) -> Browser -> Clear data.
That should restore your browser back to stock. There is a template it goes by that should also rebuild data with the locked bookmarks intact as well.
I used the skyfire method mentioned in the third post without a hitch. In case it matters, I had two bookmarks of my own already and deleted all of the locked ones.

THIS.
I ran into this problem pretty early on. I deleted all the stock Bookmarks and the browser would just force close every time I opened it. Clearing the Browser app data restored a working browser, and unfortunately the default bookmarks.
Having issues downloading from web pages. I will click a link, side panel opens with the document icon (power point for example), then I will, tap download.
At that point it will flash the progress bar with only a sliver, then show a grayed icon and say download again. Nothing will download at all.. I've resorted to downloading on my evo, using WiFi file explorer pro as an ftp... Works but a pain in the ass for school.
thought maybe it had to with some patches I installed from preware. I uninstalled a download unthrottler thinking that could be causing issues, but nope.
thanks for any input!
16gb touchpad, uberkernek, clocked at 1.5Ghz, various patches.
yeah I am getting the same thing downloading from my dropbox account.
edit: I tried a random .exe file from download.com and googled a random .pdf file to test from the browser and they downloaded fine... why won't download from dropbox?
The only sites I've tried are my school's BlackBoard site, and Dropbox. I shall try another site here at some point.
Same issues for me. It seems like a broswer issue with credentials or something. Any documents downloaded from secure sites do not open. If I don't have to login it works fine. I have confirmed this with blackboard as well as my bank account. I can download the exact same files on my computer, upload to box.net and download and open fine with the box app on TP. Very annoying....

By Jo you're right! Never thought about the secure site thing. Just tested it, same results as your own. Curious , do you have a bunch of tweaks and patches applied? I certainly do but wasnt sure if that had anything to do with it.

I don't know it it is touchpad related or just browser related. My intuition tells me browser since we can Backdoor the issue fine through the box app. Either way it will hopefully get addressed either officially or.in the community. Possibly a 3rd party browser can fix it. There r a couple for sale in the market but I won't spend the money unless u know for sure it has a workaround. Hopefully this issue bugs enough people or the right people enough to be addressed. Here's to hoping!

Yeah, the stock browsers are a little picky. For example, you cant download zip files, but with another browser from the market, you can - as mikel719 suggests.
Thanks for all the help guys....Dolphin browser worked like a charm!
My mother has an Asus Transformer, and she's had it for awhile, but she doesn't use it for much other than getting e-mails or video chats. I turned it on today and it suddenly downloaded a bunch of files. Mahjong.exe, Bubble_Hit_brch.exe, 7-superfoods-to-boost-your-immunity.pdf, etc. Small files, less than 1MB per file. There were about a dozen files in her downloads folder, a few of which had "-1" after it so it had downloaded some of them twice now.
I've Googled the filenames, Googled "downloading files at random", "downloading unwanted files", etc., etc., and I have no idea what to do at this point. I installed three different virus scanners and they found nothing. Has anyone heard of malware like this before? I'm especially surprised since she's only technically savvy enough to do EXACTLY WHAT SHE'S BEEN SHOWN to do, so I believe her when she says she doesn't download anything or install anything.
From my experience those downloads come from some webpages on the browser, or even an app.

Thanks, I'll take a look at her browser.
She should probably use a browser that doesn't automatically download stuff. I know the AOSP Browser does this, but Chrome asks you and warns you everytime a link wants to be downloaded.
