I have music in "Music" folder in mnt/emmc, the Google Music app and also the stock Music app are unable to scan the media, simply put the Media scanner is not scanning the emmc (internal memory). I can access this location using file managers and also scan the contents using PowerAmp.
External memoery (sdcard) is scanned absolutely fine.
What is the workaround to this?
Have you tried to just simply restart the phone?

I did and it didn't work. But I just did something this morning and it did work. I deleted everything from the emmc and then copied my files and they were scanning. There was no .nomedia file but I don't have an idea what was blocking the media scan in the first place.

Is there a way to force the media scanning? I know it runs when you connect your sdcard and when you boot the phone (when it is mounted), but I have an FTP server that I torrent on and download the files to my phone and the music won't get picked up until I run the media scanner.
So I need a way to force the media scanner other than unmounting and mounting the sdcard.

App called rescan media on the market, that's what I use for my media scanning needs.

Hello,
When I copy music to the Music folder on my sdcard, Winamp does not see the files. I have to reboot the tablet in order for Winamp to see the new music files. Is this normal?
If I copy video/movie files to my sdcard, rockplayer sees the video/movie files without rebooting.
Have you tried to rescan media? That is usually what helps. There is even an app in the Market for that, cannot remember the name.
I didn't see rescan media option in winamp. Found the app though. Thanks for the advice.
Hi all,
I hope this is the right place to ask this:
I use doubletwist for listening to new music that is stored on my SD card. I use Google Music for streaming my favorite tracks that I have uploaded. The problem is Google Music automatically searches my SD card and displays all the music stored on my phone along with the artists/playlists/etc. that I have stored on the cloud, which makes it confusing when browsing the library. My question is: Can I prevent Google Music from searching and displaying what's on the SD card, but still allow doubletwist to see it? Thanks much!
I think that's not a problem with the Google Play Music app. The Media Storage app does the scanning. I don't think you can do what you asked.
bump. So is this a no-go? No way to disable media scanning for google music but still allow it for doubletwist?
I don't use either app but you could try the .nomedia trick. Just create an empty file and name it ".nomedia" and place it in whatever folder your music is in then force media scanner to do a rescan (or just reboot). Media scanner will skip any folder (including all subfolders) that contains a ".nomedia" file. This should hide your music from google music but they should still show up in doubletwist (I think). Note this will hide all media files which means they will not show up in any app that depends on media scanner (any photos in the folder will not show up in the stock gallery app, etc.). If you need to unhide the folder just delete the ".nomedia" file and force another media rescan.
Thanks for the response. I tried that, but it hides media from both google music and doubletwist. This is frustrating. Why can't these apps just have a menu to allow you to select the folders you want for a library? Why do they think they need to be able to scan the whole card?
I'm on a Stock sense ROM and I just added some new music to my phone, and I downloaded it from my phone. I used ES file Explorer to move the folder to my music folder (on my sd card), but my music player won't recognize the files. Any ideas?

Sometimes the phone can take a while scanning memory for media files. To speed this up, you can try opening an mp3 directly from ES File Explorer (tell it to open with your music app, of course), or you can try an app called "SDRescan." If those don't do it, my advice would be to delete the mp3s and re-sync them. I use Media Monkey, and as a heads up, I found that older versions of Media Monkey wouldn't sync everything properly, so I had to update to the newest version to remedy all problems.
I've been on my S4 for about a month, and have encountered an annoying problem.
I have about 10 gb of music in a folder called Music on my external SD card. I can see and pltany song via my files, or ES file Explorer. But none of my music apps (Samsung Music Player, Winamp, or Google Play Music) can see any songs that are in the Music folder. They can see music in the download folder on the sd card, but not the folder that houses my music files.
I've tried changing the default location in My Files, but that had no effect. I've cleared defaults, and tried everything I can think of, but no luck.
Has anyone else encountered this? How can I get my apps to see my music folders?

Try popping out and polling in your SD card. That forces the gallery to search for new files. Never know, that might be the problem.

Check for files called .nomedia and delete if you find any. That's really all I can think of right now
