I am having issues with getting notifications on this phone. There is no LED noification light and I don't always hear the audible alert.
Is there a way to make the lock screen light up when a text is received? I have the stock messages and the AT&T messages installed, and neither seem to do this. It will sit there blank until I press the power button and see that something has come in.
I am using the AT&T messages for the visual voicemail, but again, open to suggestions.
Thanks.
my screen comes on when i get a text message. stock messaging app.
you can try SMS Popup and play with the settings in it to get what you want, like text message reminders and screen on/off

Mine never has, even before I installed AT&T messages.
Is there a setting that I missed?
Thanks.
Personally I'd recommend looking into Handcent. It's a much better SMS app imo and it definitely allows a screen pop to occur when the phone is asleep upon receiving a new message. A lot more customization as well.

i would prefer GO SMS PRO over handcent, but thats a personal preference.
@026TB4U, there are no settings within the stock messaging app that would enable/disable screen activation. it just works. when i get a text message and my screen is off, it comes on, shows me the slide to text, then after a few more seconds it shuts off
SMS Popup will allow you to do all kinds of things while still using the stock messaging app.
Thanks for the recommendations, I'll look into them.
What about voicemail?Do any of these handle that? How are you getting notified?
I would really like to find out why mine is not lighting up....lol

I use google voice and love it. Free visual voicemail and they even transcribe it for you. Also +1 on handcent. Been using that for a long time now and love it.
Mine wakes on a new message and gives the audible alert, if you don't have it silenced.

Ok, that's 3 people that have confirmed that my phone is not behaving correctly.
Anybody have any ideas why?
My phone wakes on incoming sms as well.

I do wish it would stay lit longer though...lol

I would like to have my SMS popup and light up the screen in the very least (like on the iPhone). Not sure if I want the same for email but maybe a 3-sec balloon would be nice (kind of like growl).
Any suggestions?
Handcent SMS.
Not sure about email.
Go SMS does just the same
if you just want a popup notification for these events, you can use Tasker. Tasker is complicated at first but after you understand how it works, you can create some good stuff. Right now I have a popup "ballon" that notifies me of new moves on words with friends with a popup, sound, led, and vibrate. I did this because WwF's notifcation is still new and basica n doesnt even work well.
smspopup is also good.

SMSpopup is what I use now and it works pretty well for SMS. For calendar, I'm currently testing Calendar Snooze, but at that price, I might as well get Tasker.
Tasker seems awesome but I know I'll have to spend hours to configure it and I'm not sure if I want to do that.

I'm pretty sure you're joking but this is like telling someone who used to own a Brand A car with satellite radio to go back to Brand A because his new Brand B car comes only with a standard radio. The more sensible thing would probably be to explore the option of installing a satellite radio in his awesome new ride.
Or in my case, an app that turns the screen on when I get events notifications.

Thanks, I do. But I don't think I'll suffer too badly if I have to get a seperate app for each notification type. I'm debating between Go SMS, Handcent SMS, and Chomp SMS for SMS. They all kind of look the same.

SMS Popup works well. And you don't have to use a different messaging app to use it.
+1 for smspopup
Light Flow - LED Control
It costs 1$ but works well and has lots of settings including setting different LED colors for different notifications; different sounds; different vibration patterns.

Anyone else notice that if the messaging app is open to a conversation, and the phone goes into lockmode, or you lock it and a new message comes in, it doesn't make a peep, or flash the LED?
Am I missing a setting?
Don't think it's a setting.
I know when you have the messaging app open no notifications occur if you are in the same conversation. I think if you are in a different conversation you do get notified via task bar and vibrate/sound. I guess by design since you are there. So it seems that even with the screen off it knows where you are and won't notify.
I never noticed this since I never got a text with the app open and screen off.
Which was the exact reason I use go sms. I missed too many important texts that required immediate answers.

Hey all,
Spent a lot of time on iOS. Really trying to make the transition to android and the one thing I really miss is the lockinfo / bitesms combo from cydia.
With this I was able to view all pending SMS / Emails on the lockscreen and also reply to SMS with a popup but only AFTER clicking on the notification.
What I'm looking for is the functionality to receive SMS, see the notification in the top bar, bull the tray down, click the SMS, get a quick reply popup to compose and send the message, collapse the tray and go back to what I was doing.
As of now I have to use the notification to open the messaging app or use a different messaging app altogether (handscent, Chomp), all of which seem to popup at the receipt of the message or not pop up at all.
Thanks!

Give GoSMS Pro a shot, not exactly what you've described, but it does use pop-ups that appear in front of the currently running app and allow you to quickly reply then go back to the previous app.
Idk if miui is out for s3 but that rom has a similar feature that i loved built in ..

Got GoSMS already and have been using it since earlier today. You're right that it's close but what I'd like is have the SMS pop up in the notification area and reply to it using a quickreply window when I get to it instead of it flashing up in front of me while I'm doing something. Also, as soon as you use a custom SMS app it no longer allows for the use of the raise to call motion - which I find is actually fairly useful!

honestly I miss BiteSMS too for my iphone 4... I hate Apple though.
Try SMS popup, it's the closest thing for me so far and you can change LED notification and contacts ringtone, make sure to disable the system messaging system so there wont be any conflict. Give me a heads up if you find anything better.
I've already tried a variety of SMS apps such as GoSMS, Handcent and ChompSMS. I'm looking for one now that can handle group chats, MMS, and emoji. GoSMS is too bloated with unneeded features, Handcent is kind of ugly and Chomp hasn't supported group chat for me very well. I'd stick with the stock messaging app, but I hate motoblur and after the OTA update to Jellybean, I seem to be stuck with that until a root exploit is developed.
Input appreciated!
+1
I am searching for an app that opens the screen every time I recieve an message. I already tried "SMS popup" but the app is very buggy, I always get double messages and it interfere with viber. I dont want to press the power button everytime I get an notification or message, it is quite annoying
i use chomp sms with emoji add on, it's fine i guess. What i still want is an app that incorporates the emoji keyboard, has pop-up notificatiions when i receive a message, and handles group messages like the iphone(i know, im sorry for mentioning it) anything like that?

HandCent SMS
Handcent SMS
Go sms
Been using Go SMS for the last week or so. I like it. It gives a lot of flexibility and customization. As well as doing a pop up notification for new messages
I ended up finding a themed mms.apk and pushed it to /system/app and changed permissions to make it work with the ROM I am currently running. I prefer the Google Stock mms.apk to Verizon's Motoblur anyday. I just thought that Chomp was too simple and Handcent/GoSMS were too crowded with unnecessary features. Thanks for all the input!
I've actually tried some of the most common ones, like Go SMS, Pansi and so on - but the one I like the most is Chomp!
Only the paid version is ad-free - but it really is worth the money! Simple SMS app, with alot of customizing - and no slow-down extras (I'm looking at you, go-sms). And it does support full emoji, including the new ones with only one button.
Try it - I was amazed : )
(oh - and the pop-ups can be enabled in settings btw... )
I must be one of the few that hate pop-up messages
No - I actually really HATE those pop-ups myself - So I've deactivated them in Chomp!
Sliding messaging, give it a try: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...EsImNvbS5rbGlua2VyLmFuZHJvaWQubWVzc2FnaW5nIl0.

Yes and you can turn them off in settings.
I can recomend Handcent SMS.
Does anyone know if there is someway to modify the stock sms app so when everytime u get a message the phone unlocks and u can reply? I know there is sms popup and I have been using it for a very long time now but the app is very buggy. I get duplicate messages all the time so its very unstable. I like the stock sms app but everytime I receive a message I need to unlock the phone and drag down the notification bar. Any other suggestions?

I have been using Handcent for a few years now, my only consistent complaint has been that it runs like it is a huge program and has slowdowns.

Is there a way to get notifications to pop-up when the always on display is active?
You get the icon above the clock. Are you wanting a whole heads up notification or something? The screen to turn on? I don't think there is an option for something like that. At least I haven't seen one.

Yes - I would prefer a pop-up notification for text messages, emails. Was hoping there was a setting I was missing to be able to allow this.
Thanks.

It only shows an icon. I wish it showed the actual message Like Pixel does. but it does not. If your main concern is text messages you can download something like Textra which has an option to wake up the phone when I message arrives. Then you will see the message.

Is there somewhere an app that will also show pop-up messages? Using the Outlook app for example...I find it totally worthless that I get a notification sound but absolutely no popup. I don't want to have to pull the notification center down, I just want a pop up showing the message that I just received.
On that note, I *HATE* how the lock screen INSISTS on combining notifications from an app. If I get 10 emails, I want to see 10 separate notification entries, damn it.
Using Android....is, well, annoying. I shouldn't have to download apps just to make everything work. No wonder my wife rejected the V30 and went back to iOS.

Believe it or not Android is getting better and better with how notifications are handled and how they can be custom tailored per each app. The usage of the notification center is that way for a reason for quick and easy access to your notifications without completely interrupting the user. The cool thing is that there are other apps that you can use in order to adjust the phone to perform how you want it. Android is all about customization. You can have it the way it comes from the manufacturer or you can add apps to customize your experience. For this reason it may take an Android user longer to initially set up a phone vs a iUser.
Good luck.
