[Q] Car bluetooth w/ voice command - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

So I feel like this should be something pretty simple. I'm trying to use voice command with the bluetooth in a VW, but when I activiate bluetooth in the car it dosen't automatically allow for voice commands. Can still use the phone, but it would be nice to be able to use voice command without having to log into the phone. I've tried turning on driving mode and that doesnt' seem to work.
Any advice?

i dont think you can activate the 'voice commands' option from the VW bluetooth. I have a VW Golf and I can only make and receive calls from the car's BT system. If I want access to anything else, I need to use the phone itself.

Yeah, that's exactly the issue I'm having. Would think that you could also use voice commands. It worked fine with the iphone, but doesn't seem to like the galaxy for whatever reason.

While you can still use the VW's built in voice commands (to dial numbers, etc.), I don't believe you can use the car's mic/speaker for the phone's voice command functionality. Since it's just an app, it can't integrate into the car's systems. You can however stream music to the car's audio system via bluetooth.

Does your VW stereo have a button that you push to initiate the voice command application? I had this problem on my Subaru as well. It wasn't launching the application that listens for voice commands when pressing the button. I installed an app called Choice Dialer (Which is actually now Hands-Free Voice Dialer) and it started working.
I'd give this a try and report back if it works.

Thanks for the responses. It actually ended up being something pretty stupid. Pretty sure it's still using the built-in BT, but it takes care of what I was trying to solve.
For whatever reason the first time it requested access to my address book ti apparently didn't work. If someone else has the problem what you need to do is make sure your phone and bluetooth are connected. While connected, open your notification screen, it will probably say there are no att notification, hit that, then it will show a request by your VW bluetooth to your address book. Accept it and now you can use the 'call whoever on mobile' functionality.

Glad you got it figured out. Having half-*** handsfree is a big step backwards after being able to throw voice commands out.

[Q] Voice command over bluetooth not working

I'm a big fan of the voice command features, speech>SMS, email, search, etc...
Constantly pushing the "mic" button on my keypad and talking into the phone mic just isn't user friendly enough while driving.
I can't get anything other than voice dialing to work with a bluetooth headset.
My BT set is a cheapie, I'll gladly buy a new one providing this is the issue.
I don't care about it reading email or txt's back to me, I have to be able to say "txt/email so&so, blah blah blah" and have it do that via BT.
Anyone?
Thanks,
i dont think u can do all the voice commands on BT cuz i just got a pair of sony dr-bt101 and same thing
I agree with rptw I dont think its possible. I connect my phone to my car stereo via bluetooth and cannot use the voice commands it would be awesome if I could thou so hopefully someone has a solution.
Voice commands over bluetooth work with Vlingo.
Vlingo is the greatest app (imho) for the streak! I use it for everything!
It's available on the market
+1 Vlingo, works perfect
Been using VLINGO, it's awesome. Works fine on 1.8.1 too.
Vlingo has 1 fatal flaw
After using Vlingo once, if you move out of range of your phone, then Vlingo
will cause your phone to reboot.
See link below of this problem:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9503
Vlingo is great, works fantastic, thanks for the tip.
However I've noticed that my headset doesn't stay active long enough to complete my task. EI: push the BT button, say "txt so&so", wait for Vlingo to respond -headset stops listening-
Push the button again, say content of the message, wait for "thinking" -headset stops listening-
Push the button again, say send...
Is this consistent with any other Vlingo users headsets?
Thanks.
Blueant Q1 or Q2 works well with streak on voice commands

[Q] Bluetooth Phonebook Access Profile (BT PBAP)?

The Thunderbolt is supposed to support BT Phone Book Access Profile (BT PBAP) per Verizon and HTC web sites.
Using the Verizon 2.11.605.9, and even older firmewares, I can't get my car's BT system to access my TB's phone book, even when I allow the request, and check the box for always allow.
Why do I want this? So that I can hit a button on my car to show the TB's phone book on the car screen, and be able to scroll/select who I want to call. It would also mean the Name of the caller also appears on the screen for incoming calls, rather than just the phone number.
Interestingly, while trying the leaked OpenMobile ROM, its BT PBAP DOES work properly. Unforuntately, none of the Verizon apps work, and it lacks Verizon's Visual Voicemail support.
So now for my question...
Is there a way to get BT PBAP working on 2.11.605.9? maybe use some of the BT files from the OpenMobile rom on the VZW firmware?
Any thoughts how to do this? or does anyone have any suggestions?
not sure why but for me it does work, i do use an aftermarket BT stereo... but what is your deck thats not working?

Pairing and Connecting the TB to car's stereo works (for BT Hands Free audio/BT Headset profiles). After pairing, the car kit tries to access the TB's phone book, I see prompt on phone, I select ALLOW on the TB's screen. The PB is then not an option on the car's screen. I can "digit dial" or view a list of incoming/outgoing calls for this BT session via the car's screen, but the on screen button to bring up the TB's phone book isn't there, and the names don't show on the screen for incoming calls.
Using my Bionic, BB 9780, or the TB with the OpenMobile rom on it, the car's kit CAN access the phone book, the onscreen button for it is there, and I can scroll through the names/pick via the car's screen, and it shows me the incoming caller's names.
I'd just use the leaked OpenMobile firmware if it supported the My Verizon app, Verizon's Visual Voice Mail, and the "Verizon specific" apps like NFL Mobile, etc.
I'm using stock, but rooted 2.11.605.9 on my TB. Its not DeOdexed. I don't know if its possible to pull the APK and ODEX files from the original OpenMobile RUU, or not. The version I flashed, was rooted, deodexed, etc.
I guess at this point, I could try finding a de-odexed version of 2.11.605.9, flashing my phone, and pulling the files from Openmobile, and dropping them onto my phone (overwriting the existing) and see what happens?

[Q] Do bluetooth voice commands work?

So I must be missing something super obvious or I just need a new headset. I have an older cheap Plantronics 390, but it says it will do voice commands if the phone supports it. I assume this means it sends some sort of standard voice command signal and lets the phone open up the appropriate app to handle the actual commands.
Anyways, I click the main headset button, get a little beep in my ear and nothing happens. The phone can be unlocked or locked. Doesn't matter. No apps open up and the phone ignores any voice commands I give so I'm sure it's not listening in the background.
Now I have verified that the headset actually works. I've used it on a phone call and when opening the S-Voice app manually. But I'd like to be able to use my bluetooth headset in my car completely hands free rather than have to touch the phone.
My car head unit works just fine you have to be in an app and be ready for the commands though try using the Google Now

[Q] Good voice-command app for me?

Hey all. I'm having trouble finding a voice command app that works for me.
The primary problem I'm having is bluetooth use: I need something for use in the car, where my phone is connected to my bluetooth stereo system, and many such programs have trouble talking out the bluetooth speaker (utter has this problem, but only at random) or picking up from the bluetooth mic (at least one other I've tried, can't remember which).
It would be particularly excellent if the app would only be on when bluetooth connected.
I don't mind paying money.
As for the actual voice commands I want:
1. launch app (I only have like 2 apps I ever launch in the car)
2. call person from contact book
A super-bonus awesome thing that nothing I've found will even attempt:
3. Send myself emails *that are more than one sentence long*, so I can dictate notes to myself in the car.
Ideas?

Driving Mode Capability Unlocked S9+ US Version?

Hello everyone, I am coming from a Moto X Pure which was able to read out my text messages and allow me to respond while in my vehicle driving. Not sure if it was a Moto specific capability or if Google Assistant was performing that function, or a combination of both. I do know that under Moto Voice I did have the Talk to me option enabled which says it will read aloud texts and phone calls. Doesn't say anything about me responding to messages, but that's where I think it could have been a combination of Moto and Google getting the job done.
Does the S9+ support anything like this, and if not, are there any options such as Android Auto that would work similarly? My vehicle isn't Android Auto enabled, but I think the app can work on it's own. I should add that when I say read my messages to me and allow me to respond, it's when I am listening to the radio and not streaming music via bluetooth. My Moto would interrupt and say I had a message from "XXXXX" and ask if I wanted to hear it. It would then ask if I would like to respond.
Lastly, I have a 2017 Subaru Forester Premium if that matters. Thanks as always for any help as I am a S9+ noob currently.
On my phone, the Samsung "Car Mode" app does this.
You may wish to search the Galaxy Apps store, locate and install "Car Mode", and see if it works for you too.

I installed it and I'll see if it works. So this will interrupt your radio listening and read to you the incoming message? Does it automatically enable when you are driving or do you have to enable it manually each time? Thanks.
Don't know about the "interrupt your radio listening" part.
On my vehicle, unless you've selected the BlueTooth source on the car's audio system, you will not hear anything from the phone other than from the speaker of the phone itself.
Maybe your car is different.
In my car, when using the phone's BlueTooth as the audio-source, it will notify (if configured to do so) of incoming messages - and allow for voice-driven responses as well.
It does have the ability to automatically enable the phone's car-mode when the BlueTooth connection is (re)established.

I was using Android Auto the other day and it would interrupt and let me know that I had an incoming message from "xxxxxx", but it wouldn't actually read the message. I think my Moto X Pure had a capability built in to perform the action I am looking for. Not sure I am going to be able to get that with my new Samsung. I gonna try out the app you recommended today and see what happens. Hopefully I will find someway to make it work again.

It's a no go, car mode does absolutely nothing when connected to my cars bluetooth. Doesn't read out messages at all, not even when I change from radio listening to bluetooth streaming. This is extremely disappointing in a phone that costs this much and is running the latest Android OS. It seems Samsung just isn't useful for interfacing with car head units. My Motorola did this amazingly well. If someone has some insight on how to make this work, please fill me in. Why can't Android just work properly across all mobile platforms? It's kind of ridiculous and very annoying. Samsung makes a beautiful device but it seems less capable for hands free operation than all the Motorola phones I have had. Please help, this is a big deal for me.

Sorry to hear that.
All Car Mode functionality works perfectly in my vehicle.

Are there any specific settings that you have to enable? So when a message comes in it automatically reads it through your cars speakers and then allows you to respond with a message using voice only, no touching of the device whatsoever? For me it's odd, the Car Mode works when I'm not connected to my cars BT. It plays the message through my phones speakers and I can respond, but in my car it's useless. I can't hear it through my head unit.

If you can hear Car Mode working from your phone speaker, and not from your car's audio system, I would suggest troubleshooting the Bluetooth audio connection first.
Play some audio on your phone while connected to the car's Bluetooth connection. If you can't hear that, then Car Mode isn't going to be heard either.
Perhaps checking the phone's Bluetooth connection media-volume setting might be in order.

I should have mentioned streaming music works just fine and I've made sure the volumes were all up. It's weird but it doesn't seem to work with my car. I could hear the little ding prompt but when car mode was saying something I heard nothing. I downloaded Read Texts 2 Me and it works perfectly. Interrupts the radio when a text comes in and reads it to me. Also works perfectly while I'm listening to streaming music over Bluetooth. I think it's going to be my fix, android auto and Samsung car mode just aren't working for me. Maybe I'm missing something but it shouldn't be this difficult. It wasn't on my Moto.

The only other thing that comes to mind is checking the Bluetooth connection properties.
While connected to the vehicle via Bluetooth:
Settings -> Connections -> Bluetooth
Tap the "cog" icon next to the connection for your vehicle.
Under the "Use For" section, are all of the options turned on?
As long as you've found what works for you, I guess you're good.
On my 5-year-old Ford, with Sync-2, Car Mode works without issue.
