SGSII AT&T Random Reboots - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Is anyone experiencing random reboots with your phone. It will either just flat out reboot, or the signal meter gets an X then the media scanner function and comes back to normal.
I read on the international GSII's that you wedge a piece of paper in the battery compartment to stop movement or the RAM is bad.
Please any thoughts or advice?

Not at all. I would try a factory reset and if that doesn't fix it return that thing. Good luck

Reboot all the way to the GalaxyS II screen, or back to the bootanimation?
The two are VERY different.
No problems here, even with an experimental kernel.

No reboots on mine as of yet...

Had that problme
Had the same problem, took it back the second day and got a different phone. Works fine since.

Ugggg....
Thank you everyone for the advice. I took the phone back and got a new one. No reboots.....which is great. However, now there is like screen burn in (similar to plasma tvs).....only noticeable with bright white or dark grey screens like when you open the market app and the grey screen appears in the background. Its like a huge discolored grey band right through the middle of the screen. Guess I will take this one back for #3......if this doesnt work Im gonna get something else...

i guess I should consider myself lucky that my phone is flawless

[Q] Horizontal calibration problem

Ok Looking for some help to see if anybody know how to reset the horizontal calibration on this phone.
I flashed a new ROM yesterday and when I went to set the calibration after I pressed the horizontal calibration and green circle centers it will shoot off to one side once it's finished which and forces everything to be in landscape mode. The only way I can get the phone to not stay in a constant landscape mode is to off the auto rotate function.
It wasn't the ROM because after several downloads and flashes (thinking something may have not downloaded or installed right) it kept doing it. Trying other ROMS gave the same results. ODIN back to stock gave the same results.
Has anyone ever had to reset this or have any other suggestions on how to go about correcting this problem?
Thanks in advance
Just lay the phone down on its back and push calabrate horizontal in the gereral settings

LOL thanks but that is the problem, when I push calibrate the green circle brings the ball to the center and when it finishes the ball shoots to the right side and stays there. not sure if its a hardware or software problem but it happens no matter what I try do do. I even odined back to pure stock hoping it would reset it but no luck so far.
Just to clarify, when it's done calibrating and still lying on a flat surface, the green ball moves?

Yes, the green ring brings the ball to the center and when it's done calibrating that you get the little pop up "calibrated" the ball will shoot to the right side of the screen. Iv'e look all over the internet for a solution and downloaded some apps that monitor sensors, looks like the horizontal axis seems to almost stuck in that position. I was hoping a reset of some kind may do the trick but there seems to be no way of resetting the accelerometer on these phones. Vertical axis is working just fine according to the sensor apps I have tried..
Sounds like a hardware problem. Has the phone been dropped or jarred in some way?
Actually I dropped it a distance of about 6 inches while sitting on my desk at work. The phone landed on my desk, it slipped out of my hands while I was rebooting it. It's got that thick T-Mobile rubber cover around it so it's well protected but who knows guess stranger things have happened.
It sounds like your going to have to send it back to Samsung to get it repaired.

You are absolutely right about that, good thing for insurance and being a T-Mobile customer for 5 years. They are sending a replacement phone 100% free of charge even though I've had this phone since day one of rollout.

Having problems with my screen...anyone else have having them?

I just got my first gs3 5 days ago. Love it, but yesterday i noticed a dot on the screen in the lower left quadrant. I could only see it when the screen was off and under direct light. I tried cleaning it, but it was still there, i could also feel a little abrasion when i ran my finger over it. So i take it back to best buy, tell them what's up and they swap it out, no problem. The guy said it could have been either an air bubble in the screen, or the chip could have over heated causing a "blister" to raise up. "Weird cause I've only had it for a few days, and haven't even rooted it yet" So i get it, had to go to work right after so i didn't have much time to play with it. I wake up this morning and i notice that when the screen is on a black background, like the messaging app, or something similar, i can see a "darker" dot in around the same place where i had the problem on my last one, i can also see several other smaller ones around the screen. The dots are easy more noticeable when i turn the brightness up. This is the 16 gig Sprint model, is anyone else having similar issues with their phones? I'm going to go back up there tomorrow to try and swap it out again, hopefully they don't give me and flak about it.

Not every screen has this. However over time every screen will have the problem. As far as I can tell I have none. Plus the other model that I had also didn't have any dots that I could see. I know it could have also been minimal. but it is a known issue with these screens has the other poster stated. Worth returning over? I don't think so.
I could understand having this problem a year down the road, but 1 day after first turning on the phone! That sounds a little much. I think I'll try returning it one more time...maybe 3rd times a charm?

That's AMOLED for ya. If you only see one dot...you're lucky. Hope you don't get one with 5 or more.
The dots/bleed marks should NOT be more visible when you turn the brightness up, they should be less visible at higher brightness.
Take it back, get another one. Keep doing it until you're satisfied.

+1!
Also I have an ATT model. I checked a friends and I didn't see any one his as well. He also had ATT. Not that it matters much just saying.
Also you can use this app...CHange your brightness up as far as you would like to help check for the dots/ink...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...DEsImRlLmxhcHBlLnRpbS5hbmRyb2lkLmxjZHRlc3QiXQ..
Great small app. Also helps to see if you have any dead pixels!
hope this helps you out...
Cheers...
Thanks for the app recommendation. Tried it and didn't see any dead pixels or dots on any of the screens. In fact, i can't see the dots that i did before! I don't know if it's because it's brighter out versus when i was looking last night? I guess I'll keep an eye on it for the next few days and see if it gets worse. Would this problem get worse over time or is this just something that is there and will always be there? Thanks.

I would have kept the first one, if you're critical enough you can find some kind of a defect in any phone.

From what I understand it can get worse as time goes on. same with any burn ins and so on. Again this is what I understand. By the this time next year I will be replacing this device anyways in most cases unless nothing good comes out.
i wouldn't worry about it if its gone. Could it have been some type of bleed effect or something? I don't know. I'd just watch it for now. Check it so often. If you end up not minding it (If there even if an issue..) then i would keep the device. At higher brightness settings is when you can see it from my understanding. Again I could be 100% wrong. Wouldn't be the first time!
Cheers...

Yeah, I'm just going to keep it i think unless something drastic happens. I could only see it when it was dark and i had to look hard for it, but with these devices you want it to be flawless. Thanks for the comments and such. I'll keep an eye on it for the time being.

Screen flickering/grey lines?

My phone seems to have an issue where in cold weather or an air con room strange grey and white lines flicker across the bottom centimeter or so of the screen, distorting the image. Even in just mildly chilly weather (around 26 degrees celsius) I get this issue. However if I heat the phone up by playing a graphic intensive game or the like, they go away. Anybody else have this problem?

Nah, I'm pretty chill, and it was amusing, plus I'm happy for the bump.
Anyway, new question - can somebody recommend some overvolting/overclocking settings that I can use to make my phone hot? Because as it is now even at room temp I get those lines, I'm not too sure anymore that heating things up will get rid of them, but it's worth a shot.

I suggest a warranty replacement. Who wants their phone to have to stay constantly heated. Not sure how much to over volt to for the i777 but I use no frills app for clock work on my tab

Sadly that's not an option as I bought it used (but mint) and unlocked (where I live phones don't come with contracts, so you shell out about 700$ for a new high end phone). It worked fine for the first month, then things went weird a week ago...no idea what the problem could be. I ordered a new battery and am flashing back to stock to see if it's a software issue, but I doubt either of those will solve it.

Seems unlikely, as even in recovery, etc I get those lines - and screenshots show up perfectly fine, with no artifacts that would indicate a problem with the gpu.

I too agree. Although it is completely different, I got the same thing on my Xbox 360. Checkerboard/white and black lines are indicators of a bad gpu. I have since stopped using it but it will eventually lead to the red ring.

If it was the GPU is should show up in a screenshot, no? Anyway, I'll try to get a technician to have a look at it and see if he can do anything.
It's really weird though how the problem disappears once the temperature reaches 40 degrees celsius. I really can't figure this thing out.

hey I have the same issue on my phone.Grey horizontal lines appeared on the screen. Only 1/3 of my phone screen is in normal condition without grey lines. When I used my phone at the outdoor approximately under 6 deg celcius, 2/3 of my phone screen were then covered by dark screen!!! However, when i go to a warmer place and restart my phone few times then it had gone better condition yet the grey lines still appear there. May I know have you solved your phone screen issue?? Your help will be greatly appreciated.
As said before, GPU. My old Xbox did the same thing but if I put a heater behind it it would be fine. Sounds like the soldering is bad to be honest.

Unfortunately I have not been able to solve it, at this point heat no longer matters. Whether the phone is hot or cold I still get about the same amount of grey lines. You can try to take it in to get checked for faulty screen or gpu, but where I live the repairshop didn't have the necessary parts.

[Q] In-call screen blackout issue. Help please!

I'm hoping someone has a solution to this very annoying issue I'm having with my Note 2.
It's Verizon - stock - 4.1.2
When I dial a phone number and put the phone to my ear the screen goes black - as it should. But when I move the phone away from my ear the screen doesn't come back on. It stays blacked out and I can't get it to come back on with the home or even the power button.
This means I can't hang up, I can't put the phone on speakerphone mode, I can't use the touchtone pad to navigate through menus. It's made my phone a real pain in the arse.
Anyone have any thoughts on what to do or what's going wrong?:fingers-crossed:
A couple things I'm thinking... Try pulling out your spen when it happens.. Do a battery pull if nothing else.. It might be the proximity censor... Do you have a screen protector on it?

I'll try the s-pen, maybe that will work.
I've got a screen protector, but it's the same one I've had on since I first bought the phone months ago. I've pulled the battery several time, it's the only way to hang up!
I too think it's the proximity censor, which sucks because I don't want to trade in my phone for some refurb that's gone through God knows what.
Good luck...those were the only things I could think of. ..

Check your case and your screen protector. and clean the proximity sensor. Know it sounds weird, but have problems before with screen protectors getting oil on them when placed to the ear and the sensor thinking you are still close. Also lighting from cases makes the sensor go fruity. Not a science but worth a check.

Sounds like you're having the same problem as me. You only have a single line though, while 2/3 of my display is like this. Mine gets like this whenever it's a little under room temperature, and it's a hardware defect according to Sony.
Post some pictures though. It could be software related (if you're lucky).

My XZU has this 1x1 cms 'purple cloud' at top mid center of screen all the time. I see it at the phone boot animation also. Its not captured on screen. So I guess its an LCD burn mark
Its visible only at medium and high brightness on a black background. Not on white background.

Just checked out your video, and i'm having this issue too. That's called "ghosting", and that means that the response time of the screen has gone to hell. The issue gets triggered on mine when the temperature drops a little.
Try this:
- Is it functioning normally in room temperature? If yes, put the phone in your refrigerator for 2-3 minutes and see if it's still functioning properly. If not, well.. then you're having the same issue as me, and i've talked to Sony, and it's a hardware defect and you'll have to use your warrenty and get a new screen. I sent mine in for repairs today, so i'm crossing my fingers.
IF you decide to send it in for repairs, remember to call them and ask them to do whatever triggers the issue, or else they'll simply re-flash the firmware and call it a day. That's what happened to me the first time, and you don't want that to happen

Alright, so it's the same issues as i have, and it's a production error according to Sony, so you'll have to send it in for repair. This is strangly enough only the second case where this happens, that i've read or heard about (including my own Ultra), so it doesn't seem to be that big of an issue. It could simply be an issue on a batch of Ultras that we got. It's a really strange defect though.
Alright, so I got my Ultra back yesterday with a new screen, and the problem is solved. I tested it by leaving it in my refrigerator for about 5 minutes, and there were no signs of slowdowns or other defects, so that's the way to go
