Hi all,
am on stock firmware, rooted, and have two browsers installed: stock and firefox. Whenever the stock browser opens an 'intent' (a new url) the question comes back: which browser do I want to use. Setting a checkmark at 'remember' does not make it actually remember. Same thing happens if another app creates an 'intent'. Clearing the 'defaults' through settings-apps-apps-clear defaults (or similar: my s2 is dutch so the terms are different, e.g. settings is 'instellingen') does not help.
I even downloaded an app that should force the default browser, but that had ni visible effect.
So the question:
Anyone who knows a hack so the stock browser will not ask whether to use firefox? I have no problems with firefox as it assumes correctly that I would like to remain in the same browser when clicking on a link.

I had the same experience recently. I've only had my phone for a week and it was working fine but the last few days I couldn't get the stock browser to be default....it didn't matter what browsers were installed (as long as there was more than just the stock).
I started uninstalling apps that I had installed recently. Uninstalling "claystone launcher" is what fixed the problem for me.
If you don't have claystone launcher already installed, then try removing other apps (one at a time). You can see a list of apps that you installed and when you installed them by clicking "my market account" at market.android.com.
Hope this helps.
thanks for the idea.
uninstalled a few apps,.including all alternative launchers, but to no avail

I'm not sure. Something wrong with system preference?
The stock browser have this inconvenient behavior for notify user to choose browser every time. Why not stick with Firefox. It should not notify you any more.

I rooted the Nook Tablet using adb and NookandZergy, installed the Go Launcher EX, and had no problems until an accidental tick of the "default launcher" box. I know there are several Q and A posts on the subject, but none seem to have my particular problem.
- I seem to have no access to the developer setting or anything outside of the standard Nook settings. I don't see a way to access the developer settings, though when I plug the NT into a usb port, the notification for developer mode does come up.
- I have no "web" access, as in, I have no ability to open a web browser. I believe I may have deleted it when installing the root using one of the DOS options. The same goes for the search function.
- Going through the "library" app, I can see the android system UI files, etc., but nothing that could seem to help. I also can't launch any .apk files. The NT cannot read the file and claims it is an unsupported format.
I know I have tgps_launcher installed, at least I'm 95% certain that I do. I cannot seem to access it, unless I'm unaware of all the ways to do so. I think I've provided all the info surrounding this. If I have to nuke it and reroot, I will, though I would like to avoid that option and am unsure how to do so.
Any help is appreciate. Thanks in advance.
How to switch the default home launcher for HomeCatcher once I've already set it?... This link is in my FAQ >> i would suggest you to read it.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Unfortunately this isn't possible solution, as it requires use of the "search" function. The search function for the NT Home was removed during the rooting process and is unavailable.
For the sake of argument, I tried to look for some sort of search functionality and found nothing. The only option, as I stated before, was to use the "library" app search function. This only displays actual Nook apps, however (Crossword, etc.).

Clever! Unfortunately, that was a no-go too. I went through Nook Friends to get to the google sign-in page, from there I got a mock google.com homepage going and found a download, but none of the ones I tried would work, the psuedo-browser would just crash.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to remove the stock launcher, but my gf actually prefers that interface to the Go Launcher (it's her device, I'm just doing the heavy lifting for her). I think I'm going to cut my losses and do the manual reset from your FAQ. Going with that, are there any launchers that more closely resemble the original Nook Home, or maybe a method of importing some of the icons/functionality of the rooted stuff to the Home? In any case, I'm going to be looking putting AnyCut and/or NT Hidden Settings to have several backups in case this happens again.
Thanks again for your help.

You can use stock launcher and still have an alternative one for when you use it (lets say) and change between them by using homecatcher or another app like home switcher, you may want to go to B&N setting > search> searchable items and check more items there; also in the quick tips section of my FAQ tell you what app to use to add android apps to default nook home launcher.
BTW just checking when i opened the netflix app you get some links there to open browser but if its crashing then you probably have to start from scratch 'cause that's not normal behave anyway.

Had the same thing happen to a friend's NT that I had rooted for him, and besides all that you mentioned "Button Savior" was there but didn't do anything. You are pretty much stuck.
I ended up having to do the 8+ factory resets and re-rooting, and then restoring everything from TiBackup. At least once you have the drivers working on your computer it's really not that big of a deal. I read somewhere that it might be related to "Homecatcher" but not sure about that.

Recently updated to Ineffabilis Deus and have some annoying bugs with the different reddit apps I've tried. Not sure if this is an ICS problem or an Ineffabilis problem.
50% of imgur links display for a split second and then go to blank screen. If I zoom in, the picture comes back.
All youtube links open in Chrome rather than the youtube app. I tried clearing defaults for Chrome. I also tried the "App associations" menu in settings, but I don't see the youtube app as an option for anything in there. I also used to have (on Gingerbread) an option to send youtube links to xbmc, via xbmc remote app, but that's gone too.
Anyone know if this is an ICS thing or an issue with the ROM? I don't think it's a problem with the apps, since the same thing happens on both reddit apps I've tried and I don't see anyone complaining about it in the comments for those apps.
Any other redditors on ICS had problems (or solutions)?
On ICS with exact same ROM and issues using baconreader here.
Will troubleshoot.
Mine shows some, while others do as you explained. I am stock rooted 3.14.

Youtube links won't play in YouTube on Ics or sense 3.6 I don't know which controls what. Something to do with an Apple patent lawsuit if I'm not mistaken
To allow yourself to be able to select apps to launch instead of launching chrome or the default browser automatically, you must uninstall "htclinkifydispatcher" using titanium backup or something similar. This stops the phone from automatically choosing default apps and will let you choose from whatever browsers you have installed (or youtube, if you are trying to watch a video) instead. So far the only issue I've found with eliminating this app is that whenever I try to launch a link sent to me in gtalk, gtalk force closes. Otherwise I am given the freedom of choice of which app to launch when browsing reddit. If you don't care too much about a partially malfunctioning google talk, uninstall htclinkifydispatcher. Back it up first (just in case other apps start malfunctioning, for me only google talk is affected, but it may vary for others) and then uninstall. Freezing it will not work.
Hope this helps

Issue with all direct link static images in baconreader. Animated GIFs or where it renders the website too are fine. Also only has an issue on first load, have to zoom or back out and reselect link to make image reappear. Once cached, the image renders fine on a re-read.
Yet to find any combo of Developer options, Display, or stock browser settings (assuming baconreader may render links with stock browser settings) to address that particular problem...
Edit: Recommend deselecting "Open links in app" in baconreader and in other apps if available, if that issue cannot be resolved. Feedback from other ROM users appreciated. May ask the developer about bug.
Edit 2: Stock browser settings have no influence on the issue, app renders direct link images independently.

Yeah I use google talk a lot but not nearly as often as I browse reddit. It's so frustrating trying to watch a YouTube video in chrome instead of the designated app. I think this problem (feature?) alone makes me want aosp more than anything else about sense on ics. Give me freedom to choose my apps!
I found this problem with baconreader and reddit is golden. It's annoying but but I just double tap the imgur and it shows (zooming).
Hi
I have a big problem with slightly lesser known web browsers on Kitkat. If I set browsers to automatically clear data (history, cookies etc.) at exit they can't actually clear it. No error message or anything displays but they just can't do it.
I've tested this on both 4.4.2 & the recent 4.4.4 but the issue is present. So, please help me.
Steps to reproduce --
1. Use browsers such as Next Browser, Lightning, Naked, Lucid etc. and set them to clear all data on exit.
2. Surf some site where you can see your history without logging in (e.g. in Google homepage if you search for something & then go again at the search box your recent searches will be there).
3. Exit browser normally i.e. not by swiping out from recent apps.
4. Now, when you again go to the sites you visited on step 2 you will notice your history with them is kept. This data shouldn't be kept if the browsers clear all data on exit was actually working, right?

i think this is just the odd way android works (at its weirdest)
when you hit the back button and there is no more fallback processes to go to, like any app it would just minimize. its not neccisarily a bug but just weird design within android..
data should be wiped when asked to close (aka via recents or anything else like such, or even using a exit option within the browser)
I think its maybe a KK bug because in ICS and Jellybean this works. Why would developers give such an option in their products if this feature doesn't actually work? This issue is present in my friend's non-sony kitkat phone too. Google changed so much in KK, you know! No flash support, no text wrap etc.
Also, in stock Firefox v33 or later this clearing data at exit works 99% of time. Chrome too won't remember data if incognito mode is selected. So, what's going on? Is there no way to solve this problem cause I really wanted to use those browsers especially Lucid browser. Firefox, Chrome are so bloated!!
@XAoler you seem slightly confused, the browsers are set to clear data when the app is closed, you aren't closing the app, as @Envious_Data says your just opening a new window. If you want the data clearing you must manually kill the app.

No, no I am closing the apps from the exit option available in their menus. If the menu option is exit and I select that the apps should close, no? Also, I actually used force stop option as well from system settings. The data will stay even when doing this.
I don't think @Envious_Data said that I am opening a new window. He said its the way android works.
i did mention its the way android works
you have to kill the app for it to be concidered closed. pressing the back button doesnt always work even on aosp, cm11 or anything alike
Uh....none of you seem to really read my post. I am not exiting them using the back button. I exit the apps using the exit button from their menu. So, tell me is it not the correct way to close them???
Also, I used force stop option in android system settings\apps. Data will stay even when using this method. What do you mean by manually killing the app!! How else do you manually kill the apps?
Sorry, if you are killing the app using the exit function provided then yes the app should be clearing data if set to do that, to me it sounds like an app issue rather than the OS. Is the browser still present in recent apps after exiting this way? (should be without a preview) If so that suggests it's incorrectly closing down.
Actually I used 4 different browsers and all of them have this problem. So, clearly this is a OS problem. But I have now switched back to firefox. Mods can close this thread. This was of no use.
I'm curious to know which mobile browser you'd recommend using? I've been using Dolphin, which has been fine (great even) but after a recent update it has begun crashing repeatedly. I've been doing my research and I've been learning that if I turn off the Ad Blocking setting then it won't crash as often if at all (but then you're left open to the screen entirety ads among other things). I've also been learning that Dolphin isn't so great with privacy and data mining (correct?). I tried uninstalling Dolphin 12.0.2 and going with an older version from the XDA site but alas there's been little to no improvement.
So I've been looking at other browsers. I know to stay away from CM, the Cheetah Mobile browser, but what else is out there? I'm thinking about the stock Chrome browser that all Android devices come with but really don't care for it which is why I found Dolphin in the first place. I like the Samsung browser which I've seen in the Play Store and gave a test drive to. I also like Opera...
Also of interest. Apparently Dolphin is able to access my Google account and rebuild itself after a fresh install, whether I've uninstalled it and then installed it again or switched devices. This has been very helpful and allowed me to just pick up where I left off, but I've also become invested in the Dolphin ecosystem and it seems to be the only browser that'll access this. I'd like to just pull my favorites from one browser to another. Chrome won't do this, when I sign in I get an amalgamation of what's on the PC version of Chrome for both the computers I use at work and at home... I really don't want the two to commingle as there's stuff on both that I don't want on my mobile, and needless to say if I save a favorite on my mobile I don't want it showing up at work for unknowledgable eyes to possibly see.
So any help would be appreciated...
I use chrome. Never had issues.
I'm having some issues with Chrome Beta that I'm trying to get resolved through Google's support forum. So in the meantime, I installed Firefox and even the standard version of Chrome. Both work great, but unfortunately, Chrome Beta apparently doesn't won't to give up control. Even if I disable Chrome Beta or uninstall it completely, I am still not given the option to set another browser as the default. Instead, what I get when I click a link/url to access the internet, is the message "App not installed". It's like Chrome Beta has permanently set itself as the master default, even somehow after I have disabled or even uninstalled it.
Under Default Applications, Chrome Beta is not even listed, nor is any browser listed. I even reset all app preferences under Manage Applications, which reset all my apps' defaults, and still the default browser seems to be hardcoded for only Chrome Beta. If you open Chrome Beta under the Manage Applications, it ironically shows that it has NO defaults set, which seems odd but tells me obviously something is amiss here.
So, I'm at a lost, I have no idea why this is happening or why I can't force another browser to be the default. I do have root, so if anyone has any ideas how I could possibly override this strange behavior, or any other suggestions, I'd love to give it a try.
