My phone finds a software update. I'm afraid to do it because it will break root or lock the bootloader or something.
Is there any resources that shows me what all the official updates do?

Lmao you think I don't know the different between clicking market and clicking settings, scrolling all the way to the bottom, clicking software update, and clicking the confirm ok button?
I do not have down syndrome.
Also, I can't check for updates now because I am debloated and zip aligned so it wont find any, just tried.
My question still stands. Is there a resource that will show us what the official updates do?

AT&T will put out a update announcement with change logs. Since there isn't any official announcement, we don't know what it is until someone applied it. And if you're rooted and made some changes, I'd be very careful about accepting any OTA updates. First OTA update for Captivate bricked a lot of rooted phones (and some stock, non-rooted phone as well).
I can confirm with the OP that yes indeed this morning I hit the Check for software updates and it gave me that an update is available but servers are busy now try again.
Weird. No update available on my end. Yet.

I just checked the software update and it gave the message along the following lines
"Communication Failed:
There is an update available for your phone but the software servers are busy. The phone will try to contact the server again"
if you try again it says "Current software is up to date. You may check again in 23hrs 59mins"
I wonder if this is a small update that fixes the password lockscreen issue?

I forgot about the password lock bug. This may be the update for it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
Probably is the fix for lock screen bug. The update does not always show up for all phones. It is rolling out in batches. You can try cleanup the cache data for the update app and try again. At least, that's how we did it in the past with Captivate.

might have bricked some stock phones but never installed on my captivate after rooting it. It would get to 50% and fail. That is why I refuse to do ota updates, safer either Odin or CWM or Kies but ota I dont ever trust lol

Does anyone know what the OTA does/changes? I would hate to apply it for no significant reason and cost myself a chance at root in the future.
Not until Leo, tmartin, toast, or haus says so. They are working on root

You and anybody else saying that is just as useful as me saying if you take the OTA, you wont have to wait.
At this point everything looks like its just pure speculation, nobody knows for sure.
When would you ever apply an OTA~ I don't recall a situation where it was a good idea LOL
Can't watch the Green Hornet until I update the software. No thanks.
I didn't update mine yet and it played green hornet just fine. It's a shame they didn't put a better movie on here it actually looks pretty darn good. It's the most impressive 3d content I've seen so far on the 3vo

Where did you get your phone, Best Buy?
I applied the update and now my phone shortcut is missing from the lockscreen and the app drawer. I searched online and apparently it's a common issue and HTC is working on yet another update to fix it. Apparently the first OTA update allowed you to connect to the phone via ADB.... so it looks as if they MAY be in the process of unlocking the bootloader for us.
Either way, there are a few small bugs to work out.
I wouldnt apply the OTA.. i know that its not confirmed it will do anything to affect root. However my understanding is the devs working on root didnt do it and im not going to either. Id like my phone to be as similar to the ones they are working on as possible just in case it matters.
On top of that i dont see any problems from not installing the OTA.
Too funny. You guys say you don't trust the OTA but you trust the software that came on the phone to begin with? Anyhow, HTC put out an update for a reason- it fixes things that are broken. If you want a partially functioning and buggy device, do not apply the update. If we had root I could see why people would be so concerned about losing it. However, we do not have root and who knows when we will. So, if until then you want a phone that works properly, apply the update which probably isn't going to change a whole lot in regards to your ability to root.
So if I did apply the update I'm f'ed??

The OTA has screwed up my phone. It is stuck in a boot loop; I was able to go to the bootloader but the factory reset did not fix it. I am headed to the store to swap out my brand new phone.

mine worked fine did you give it some time?
I'd hold off on updating for the simple reason HTC is trying to fix their last OTA lol
My phone arrives Monday but I'll wait unless theres a bug that is really bothering me, otherwise I can hold off. If you want to update for the sake of updating then don't whine if it prevents you from rooting later.

I just tried it on my wife's phone and it came back with the "No Updates Found" screen.
I noticed that this morning as well. I have checked it multiple times since and it's still doing it. Yesterday I was getting the "no new update" screen, todays the "checking for update" screen just disappears and nothing happens.
Weird.
Yea an OTA push could be incoming. Yesterday, it was saying no new software available. Today when I check, the windows closes and disappears without any notice.
Good to know my phone is not the only one acting wierd. I'm trying not to get too excited over an incoming OTA update.

Thank you so much. It's a stock rom, but i have taken a lot of the bloat out of it.
Have you gotten the OTA update yet? If not it may be frozen trying to download/install it. I had that issue and had to clear its cache/data to get it to stop.
What update was it? I honestly am not sure, is there a way to check and see if I got the update? What would i look under in "about phone" or what not?

From what I've seen so far, they are rolling out the software update only in test markets: Salt Lake City, UT and Austin, TX. You may not be able to get the OTA until it is in wide release.
What's interesting is there is a mention today that they pulled the ISIS mention from the update. At least the version remained the same in the two press releases (2.17.605.2 710RD)

Back story:
I was able to get in before they removed unlocking so I'm actually running Hasoon2000's QX senseless rom and have TWRP installed.
I'm sitting here at work and heard my phone make a noise but wasn't paying attention. Then 10 minutes later it's in the process of rebooting itself. It tossed itself into recovery and looking at the log it tried and failed to install the ota update. I'm a little concerned that it just up and tried to install on it's own without asking (or if it did it had a timer). But either way since i'm not running stock it failed.
I'm in Idaho which no one gives a crap about, so i'd say it's global now!

Well like i said i heard it make a noise, but it was the sound i have set for calendar reminders so i ignored it. I'm assuming that was a prompt, and it probably waited 10 minutes for a response before going for default behavior. I think the most worrying part is default behavior in this case is to auto install.
But since I'm running a custom rom it failed so no harm done... to me at least!!!!

I happened to notice mine was downloading. After it downloaded there was a pop-up warning me it was about to update. There was a 3 minute countdown and a dialog to proceed immediately or defer. I selected defer and it let me set the date and time. Set it for next week so I could see how this potential new root exploit works out.

Yep killing HTCDM did the trick, my phone is no longer trying to update. I also confirmed from some other posts that HTCDM is the process that checks for updates. So kill it or freeze it if the defer option isn't working (which it doesn't seem to work for anyone) or you're running a custom rom.

Yes. Can you re-root it?
I'm on stock & rooted. Not unlocked.
Update notification went off this morning; read some of this thread; told it to let me know again in 8hrs.
Just went off again, I said ok, whatever, told it to update. It rebooted, & now it's just sitting there at the white, "rethink possible" screen.
Key combo reboot actually got it into the "software update" screen, but that then error'd at 1% complete. Error was something like, "01X03fed." It disappeared too quickly while I was typing this. Rebooted again, fully this time, and a, "Installation interrupted" warning is showing.
Hopefully the update notification will be gone, too...
