Is it possible to re-sim-lock a phone? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I unlocked my phone with an app by Helroz - is it possible to restore the sim lock so that it looks like it's in factory condition?

Also, this one is a Canadian SGS2.

If you have a backup of your efs from before the unlock you can restore it. It has been a while since I unlocked mine but if I remember right the unlock app backs up the efs before unlocking so you should be good.

If I did a factory wipe since then, does that mean it's gone?

You do not have to re-lock your phone to be in factory condition. In face, I see no reason why you would want to do it. Warranty? Unlocking your phone does not void the warranty. Rooting does.

The thing is, the people empowered to refuse service on my device told me if I had unlocked the phone they would do nothing for me, so your telling me otherwise does not really help.

If it backed up your efs then it probably is in the internal sd card w/c i think will not be erased by doing a factory reset. If otherwise you formated the internal sd card then it will be gone (i think).

Well it does, but not directly. First of all unlocking might be illegal in Canada (OP says it's canadian SGS2). Second if he modified the efs to unlock then he could do that only by rooting, and that might be the main reason for those "empowered" people to say it voids. On the other hand if you would use magic unlock code based on imei (don't know personally how that stuff works) then it wouldn't imply that it was rooted.
Besides if you don't have that efs files. You can still try to simply reverse the hack by placing right bytes in the right place. Browse howtos here there should be some info about operators sim code. Orrrrrrrr you could lock your phone by using so called secret codes I think I saw something like that, perhaps this would allow you to lock the phone again to a particular network in range but first backup the efs again, mail it to your account to be safe.
cheers

I see alot of potentially good ideas for solving this problem here, but not alot of usability. i.e I have absolutely no idea as to how to put these methods into effect.

Baloney. What happens if its carrier unlocked?

Bell canada only allows you to unlock your phone from them by them our they will not honor the warranty. bastards I know.
They charge $75 to unlock.
If you have the extended warranty take your phone water skiing and try to call some one.then make a claim and get a new phone.
Welcome to canada please bend over to receive your new phone.

I just had a thought.
Call bell and pay for the unlock code for your phone.
They should have no way to tell how it was unlocked..
Then you can use your warranty.
Still sucks

There's absolutely no reason to relock your phone even if you're sending it back for warranty purpose. You do need to put back stock unrooted ROM and reset the flash counter
I have unlocked my old Galaxy S and my Motorola Atrix. Both which I sent in for repair. No problems whatsoever

Worst and weirdest problem EVER. [Phone part not working, sim, imei, baseband]

The phone part of my gs2 has stopped working without notice during standby ;
Sim cards are not recognized, the baseband is listed as "unknown", so are imei and everything associated with phone and data.
Wifi works, like everything else, it works like normal except for phone and data.
I was on cognition 1.31, I tried to restore a previous working nandroid backup, but with no success ; So I tried to flash separately various modems via Odin , but with no success either...
If I put the phone in offline mode it stays that way handgun it's impossible to disable it.
What can I try next before taking it to service?

Restore your backed up EFS folder as it looks looks wrong/no IMEI .
Service will require no root no custom rom and rom counter at zero for warranty .

I have the USB jig, so I have no problems restoring it to stock-like conditions.

Obviously is not stolen, I bought it from a local reseller in June, sealed and with my provider's sim/documentation ,it worked like a charm until now..
But how can this matter? Should I contact my network provider?
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
I have the same problem. The phone is not stolen I went to the shop and I called the provider to check if the IMEI is not in stolen or lost blacklist but it is not.
I went to carphone warehouse and of course they also straight away told me that it is probably stolen but later that backed from that idea and they do not know what to do with the phone they advised to send it to Samsung.
I wonder why the idea that the phone is stolen,
It has no IMEI no baseband . Stolen phone would have baseband and IMEI may be changed but some. Stolen IMEIs are in database and phones with this IMEI cannot use the network (also I know that the changing IMEI is not legal but easy to do) but ours are not. So why the idea that it is stolen?
Anyhow.
Is your EFS folder Read Only as mine and you can not change there anything?
I wonder if there is anyway to be able to completely remove EFS partition and create it again.
This is only Linux and I bet that there is the way.
I got myself second handheld directly from provider and now I am looking dor the way to clone the partition but no success.
Well if you've got all the documents and receipts then I would certainly take it back!
Same advice but still we do not know why it happends to so many SGS2? is it hardware or software error?
As i have 2 same phones i thing that the content of my EFS folder is not corrupted and i will do the test and copy it from the brokrn one to the working one and see if IMEI will change to the one fron the broken one? i think it will anf i know that i can not di this other way around because it is RO. Si if it will work that means it is the hardware

Your Baseband processor is dead, thats the only reason "Unknown" will be displayed, if it was because your EFS was corrupted you would have the U1 default IMEI displayed.
Service is your ONLY option.
Yes thay is what is happened i wonder how much it cost to fix the Baseband processor?
Finally a definitive answer, as soon as I come back home I'll take it to service, hoping that it won't take too long, this is the worst period for service, everything is closed due vacations ...

You should have warranty, since the phone is too young for the warranty period to be over, and it's not some kind of damage that's related to you, but it's their fault.

I've got exactly the same problem. I bought mine from Phones4u when it came out in late april, but i'm now in Hong Kong on a short term contract, and my phone is lost its IMEI and baseband after the battery died.
I took it to Samsung HK service centre and not suprisingly its not covered by warranty in HK as its a UK phone, but they will repair it for about £150, they said they need to replace the whole board, and takes a month to get in.
I rang Samsung UK service centre, and they told me to send it in to the UK for repairs.
Its really shocking that running out of battery can corrupt the phone like this, and how on earth can mobile phones not be covered under international warranty? a mobile phone is mobile right?
Now i having to use my old iphone with all my data such as sms and chat history gone.

[Q] trying to unlock

i'm not asking for unlock codes!!
my local cell phone repair shop screwed me over, i bought this atrix off ebay for $100 because it had a broken digitizer. i replaced the digitizer hoping the lcd is still good. no go. so instead of buying the cheapest lcd and waiting a few weeks to use the phone, i brought it to the repair shop.
the phone was off ebay and broken so it had knicks, scuffs, and a few missing fillers internally and screws. the phone i got back when they were done with it was completely new. no knicks, no scuffs, screws were all there and not worn down at all, etc.
i inserted my at&t sim card and it asks me for the unlock network pin. wtf? i dont want to go back to them because hey, they gave me a brand new phone and even if they dont remember me or the phone, they charge $50 for unlocking. if it was $10 alright i'll do it. $25 is really pushing it. but, $50 is ridiculous.
is there any way to figure out which network it is locked on to? i did check out the apn list to find out what the network settings currently is and it was completely blank.
i really do appreciate any help. i've already tried 2 online unlocking services (1st from ebay and 2nd from an online service site). the 1st one couldn't find any codes for my IMEI on at&t/cingular and the 2nd one i think was a factory unlock and they gave me a code by the phone did not accept it.
The Atrix should have the full APN list. You will just need to sim-unlock it.
Can you get into the "About phone" in the settings and see what build number it is?

i was thinking the exact same thing but there was nothing in the apn list like literally nothing. not even those protected carrier apns.
this is all the information in the about phone page.
system version
4.5.91.MB860.ATT.en.US
model number
MB860
android version
2.3.4
baseband version
N_01.77.30P
webtop version
WT-1.2.0-110
kernel version
[email protected] #2
build number
4.5.91
it doesn't make sense huh? everything listed, other than the missing apns, states that this phone should work with my att sim card but it does not. i did search the web and found the original att apns for the atrix and added all 4 of them and still asks me to enter the sim network unlock pin.
i know i most likely need to sim unlock but i dont know what carrier it was before. i already tried 2 unlock services online and both didn't work. if i could find out what carrier it was before, i would have much better progress.
Can you get into the Android Market on wifi? There is an app called APN Manager you can try to see the entire APN list.
https://market.android.com/details?...GwsMSwxLDEsImFsZS5hbmRyb2lkLmFwbm1hbmFnZXIiXQ..
Then you can go here to get an APN list (it will be the xml file within the zip):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1149523
Then you can do this:
1. Go into APN Manager, go to "Backup & restore" and select "Backup"
2. Then, if you have a file manager, you can into your internal storage to the APN Manager folder and you will see an xml file. Just delete it and replace it with the xml file from the zip (and make sure to rename it the same as the original one)
3. GO back to APN Manager and just do a restore this time

Its an AT&T branded device - just call AT&T and ask them nicely for the unlock code - tell them you're planning a trip over-seas and need it unlocked. As long as your account is in good standing, they'll give you the code free. I say its AT&T because of the info you posted, says AT&T in the info there - although someone may have flashed that over a Bell device or something like that (not sure if its possible to do that) But its worth a shot to call them.

yea, i was thinking it could of been a bell atrix but atleast the apn for bell would of been there right? the first unlock service i've tried said they searched both databases for cingular and at&t and they couldn't find a code for the unlock. the second unlock service was supposedly for the factory unlock which did generate a code but it didn't work.
i didn't want to go to at&t to waste a trip but i don't think i have a choice. my fear is that they wont have a code for it like the first unlock service i tried.
Have you tried to see if a different AT&T sim would work?

nope, dont have another att sim card, my wife has the iphone 4 which uses the micro sim which i dont have an adapter for. actually, my wife also has a second line with at&t for work, but that doesn't have the smartphone plan... the last time we put that sim to a smartphone, even for just a day, the next bill we got was $40 more than wat we usually pay and was hell trying to resolve that mess.
so im guessing i should just bring it to at&t?
omg... i just went to the at&t store... my god... i hate going into an electronics store and knowing more than all the people working in there combined...
i told them my problem and all they could say was, "i'm sorry. i can't help you while the phone is still carrier locked. you have to contact the original carrier to get the unlock code."
what the hell do i do now? that is my problem! i have no clue what the original carrier is because the stupid local cell phone repair shop just gave me this headache of a phone instead of repairing my original phone! man, but my original phone was really messed up. this one is like brand spanking new, but jesus i cant get it to work with at&t!
i've checked with bell and the imei doesn't match any unlock code they have. at&t/cingular is also the same. i'm out of options.
any ideas? is there a way to track the imei to the carrier? or some code like *#06# for the imei but for the carrier lock info?
Is the phone not carrier branded in any way? That's weird. I'm not sure why it has an AT&T build(4.5.91) on it and it not be an AT&T phone...

oh trust me. i am the most confused person about this phone.
it has the at&t start up splash as well as the bloatware so yes it is an at&t phone... just the it has no at&t apns or any apns at all and my at&t sim card triggers that "sim network unlock pin" screen on start up.
this phone is seriously giving me the biggest migraine i ever had from a working phone.
Have you tried booting into recovery to see if it has a custom recovery on it or the stock recovery? Either way, maybe try that and using the "Factory reset" option from within recovery to see if that helps?

I'd leave it alone since it's a Froyo build. I would just try to do a factory reset if possible. If that doesn't work then I don't know. I would suggest flashing an sbf but I have no idea what version phone you are using so that might be too risky.

yea, my first start up since the repair i checked the status and it was on 2.2.2 (sim card was not inserted yet). i went home and put the simcard in and it did ask for the pin so i thought if i downloaded the motorola update software on the computer and update my phone to the lastest at&t update it would fix it. apparently not.

lmao, i agree. never thought a phone would ever be this complicated. i took the phone to a retail unlocking service store, but they were really stumped when they were evaluating my phone. $50 with $10 deposit for them to clean up this mess. i was hoping i would find a solution before they would call me back (they said give them 2 to 3 days to figure out something) so i wouldn't have to add more money into this "thing".
Is it requesting a 4 pin number?
EDIT: I just had a thought. I remember I had used a SIM Pin on a phone in the past and usually the "default" pin for AT&T is something like "1111" or "1234" or maybe even "0000". Something along those lines. I've even heard that the last four digits of your phone number might be it. Of course, this is contingent on the premise that it is requesting a 4-digit pin, but might be worth a try (you get like 10 tries with the method I'm thinking about).

[Q]Mobile Network not available

Hey I've been looking through all the other threads for the past few days and nothing has helped. My normal network is orange but a few days ago i believe it was after i flashed neat ROM i couldn't connect to my network i tried a few different sim cards in there but some worked and some didn't, now today i flashed Miui android and the sim cards that used to work don't now.. I've contacted orange and they are sending me a new sim card. I've tried flashing stock ics and gingerbread also stock orange firmware, IMEI is the same as under the battery.
Is it..
Blacklisted?
Hardware?
EFS?
Thanks in advance
Did you try this already?
Yeah, sorry should have said, this was the first thing i tried
Before contacting Orange, Did you try your sim in another phone or try reinstalling Original Orange firmware.
Going from one custom rom to another custom rom because of the problems you were getting, will more than likely create more problems.
From recovery, data/factory reset. advanced wipe delvik cache. Mounts and Storage format system and data.
Use Odin to reinstall latest firmware or the original firmware that came with your phone.
Then make a nandroid backup. Plus backup your EFS.
Once its all working.. Then and only then.. try a custom rom.
Thanks for helping, but that has not worked, i also got my new sim in the post just now and that has not worked either.. :/

Sorry to hear that. If you have already tried original firmware and your imei is correct then it looks like it may have to go in for service.
Dont forget to use triangle away if your still on ICS to remove any binary counts or use USB jig with old bootloader. Then flash your original firmware back to your phone before sending it in though.

Blacklisted surely Orange would have told you .
EFA unlikely if you have correct IMEI you can always restore your backed up EFS folder .
Hardware possible but as you have messed with roms my guess would be you have wrong CSC and not entered network settings manually .

Sounds like you already had an idea that the IMEI was blocked from your first post. Sugesting that you have a fair idea that it was stolen. If not, I hope you get your money back. If on the other hand you knew!!, I and I imagine all the other members of this site wil help you no further. And I hope you get what you deserve!!!

If it was stolen it wasn't my fault it was CEX's fault for selling it to me, i reckon someone sold it to CEX either to claim insurance or it was stolen and then sold to CEX then me. I would rather get the IMEI unblocked instead of a refund do you know if they have the power to do that?

No they will not have the power to do that," that would make it a criminal offence, if it already is'nt ". Take your receipt back to the shop along with the phone and demand your money back.

IMEI gone with no backup

So, a sad and dumb tale. I rooted my phone and through the process have erased my nv_data.bin and subsequent files from the efs folder. I was dumb enough to have not created a backup of the folder before losing these files. My IMEI is now a 0/1. Now I've searched all over for a solution but there apparently have been some people claiming it can be solved but noone has ever posted a guide to how to do this. Skeptical over a fix existing for this problem, i have called in to my carrier and claimed i would like to exchange phones citing that my current S3 is getting very slow. As my device is within the return time, it was accepted. However, if a fix is possible i would like to cancel the work order and keep my current one.
So, my 2 questions are basically this;
can anyone tell me if this problem is fixable, and if so, tell me how .
secondly, i have heard of people with the same problem returning their devices for new ones. I would like to know what was the carriers return policy and if they ever called back when they found your phone had no IMEI.
Unfortunately it doesn't look like there's currently a fix, did you only root it or did you root then flash stuff as well? as far as I've heard just rooting shouldn't have made you lose the IMEI, but I'm no expert.
---------- Post added at 09:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:09 PM ----------
you could try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546
or search hc ktool in play store to see if either of those methods work, but since it's already corrupt it probably wont....hope it works!
As far as for returning, is your flash counter 0? if not and you un-root the phone theres really no way for them to know you messed with it and they won't care about anything and will replace it.
i didnt flash anything i dont think. i installed supersu using cwm...
so does anyone have any stories about returning their phones with broken IMEI's?

I read about someone who did this on the AOKP thread over on rootzwiki. He said he unrroted & returned it for another no problem, he had T mobile.
My dumb ass question for the day is this. What does it effect when your IMEI is erased? Does the phone still work or is it not reading the sim? I'm very gun shy to flash anything else until someone can figure out what is causing this issue...
im with a canadian carrier. virgin mobile. a subsidiary under bell mobile. so hopefully its similar case.
the imei is the number that the carriers recognize in order for them to allow u into their services. without a confirmed imei number on their network, u cannot call, text, or anything related to the mobile network. the phone still functions fine.

its an ongoing issue so far happening with att and tmobile sgs 3s( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28710945. backing up the /efs folder wont be of any help either if you do lose your imei as the lte sgs 3s are missing nv_data.bin in the /efs partition which contains the imei number.
something really weird happened today. I bring my IMEI broken phone around with me jus for music. but today randomly i got a bunch of texts, voicemail, and missed calls since the time my IMEI broke down. that must mean i regained access back to the mobile network somehow. when i rechecked in an hour. i did not have mobile network connectivity and my IMEI was set a 0/01 again.
maybe someone knows wth that was?
Out of curiosity, what partition does the efs folder live on? A factory reset or downloading the firmware from samsung-updates.com and flashing through Odin won't work. Forgive the ignorance. I just want to know if this applies to all S3's.

oddly enough. even though i have my imei is 0/01, i randomly get connectivity to the mobiles network on occasions. this has happened a couple of times now. i received a bunch of texts and calls, and then service is gone again.
any possible explanations?
The imei number isn't in the normal efs folder. I believe some very bright devs are looking into finding it, but for now there is no way to backup the imei.

This happend to me too. My IMEI read 0 /02. Good thing I was still within the 14 day return policy. I'm not doing any modding til this IMEI mess is resolved.
Yes, this did happen to me. My IMEI = 0 and my IMEISV= 02. All works fine except data and I'm stuck on Edge. I visited two T-Mobile stores today and they were baffled, but strangely neither bothered to look at the IMEI nor for the tripped counter. I purchased my phone on 6.21.12 and will be receiving my new phone tomorrow. I'm really wanting to get back to CM9/10, but think I will now wait until there is a backup/restore for the IMEI...or, I will not use Odin and trip my counter...that is what I'm most worried about.
I have yet to see any Verizon customers with this issue, nor do I seem to have an nv_data.bin file in /efs. I did have an IMEI folder, however.
Which recovery did you guys use that lost imei. If cwm...which one?

[Q] Why is my unlocked gs3 i9300 not able to make calls?

I purchased a phone that was supposed to be unlocked. But when I received it, it had been a Claro gs3. Naturally it did not work with T-mobile. So I rooted the phone then unlocked it. Looking at the status of the phone with two different apps (galaxsim unlock and galaxy unlock), and both say product code: gt-i9300mblpct ; Accepted MCC/MNC: all ; Network Lock: unlocked ; then lists several other things that are all unlocked. Says nothing is locked in either of the apps. And yet the screen that asks for an unlock code still pops up, and the phone cannot connect with T-mobile, even though I have an activated microsim in it. When I first received the phone, I purchased an unlock code, that worked for about a day. When I turned it off and then back on, it asked for another unlock code (the old one wouldn't work). Also, all of those special *#xxxxxx# type codes do not work, it does not compute on the phone for some reason. Any ideas what is going on or how I can make calls and receive texts on it?
is it a genuine i9300? does the imei match?

Model number: GT-I9300
Baseband Version: I9300UBELL1
It was unlocked with an unlock code till I reset the device, even though in the rooting and unlock apps it says everything is unlocked.

Just looked on a website to see if it is blacklisted... it is not.
so, I'll repeat my question. Is it a genuine i9300? does it have all the samsung features like best shot and direct call?
does the imei match?

yes yes yes... it is genuine. i went to multiple websites to ask, plus t-mobile says it is not blacklisted. i definitely know what the real ones look like. i have done lots of business with china, so i can distinguish any fake phone (plus this was not from china). all of the specs, feel, look, quality, and weight are the same. i know my way around phones, just not sure why this is happening. i have unlocked many phones, put on emulators/roms, created a hardmodded orignal xbox, did a softmod on several wii's, fixed computers, etc.
same thing is happening to me i flashed a custom rom and everything worked fine but I couldnt make calls or send texts. So I restored it back to my stock rom and still cant make calls or send texts.
does the imei match the one on the back?

Flash back to the stock Rom, and reset to factory defaults, you might have to enter the unlock code again and see if that works!

Do you know of a good mac program that would do that safely for the I9300? I've heard horror stories about flashing back the stock rom unsuccessfully or for the wrong device.
Are you in the US?
I would not have a clue, just find a thread directing you, and do exactly as it says! If it works for someone else it would work for you!
