So, I got to play with this at best buy and I must admit, if I had 300$ to spend I might have left 300$ there at best buy and walked out with it.
This tablet was the most fun I've ever had playing on a tablet. I wasn't impressed by ipad, the galaxy s tab was cool, but not really "eye catching" in terms of being worth the price..
This sucker was smooth though.. it ran really, really smoothly. It was probably one of the coolest things I've seen.
The weird part is that I really had trouble finding a logical use for the pen. It is always nice to get more for what your purchase, but I am having trouble finding practical uses for it. I am sure if I got one I would think of more uses after the fact.
A few times I've used it to take notes. But mostly, I use it to show my friends how much better my tablet is compared to theirs. I think the latter is what HTC was going for.
I use it to quickly mark up power points and presentation notes when I do reviews at work.
So far I haven't found a use for it. Taking notes on the tablet does not appeal to me nor does drawing on screenshots.
I use it whenever I need a paper to write something on. Paperless for me. Only print it out when I really need it. Environmental friendly as well

I use it to takes notes in my classes. I find the notes mobile app much easier to take notes with compared to the HTC notes app. Plus with honeycomb you can use the pen all throughout the tablet as apposed to only taking screenshots on gingerbread

I use it @ work (IT) for taking notes, since we are trying to go "green" in the office, it's my "see here ya go I'm going green"...and hopefully this means that work will reimburse me for it.
I never even thought about the possibilities involving roms.
Could be loads of fun.

I design and manufacture parts for the auto racing industry.
I use the Flyers camera to take a photo of the area I’m working on then, note the dimension on the pic with the pen.
If need be I can take several shots from different angles.
I then return to my workstation’s cad program and I have all my info at hand.
It really helps me to visualize the part I’m working on.
For making a usable quick sketch and markups. I was surprised how much I started to markup screen shots of Web pages once I got used to the idea.

Make notes when reading eBooks.
Take a picture of office maps (fire routes work great) then mark them up for new network drops and whatnot.
I've started using it in place of anything I'd have used a paper notepad for. Extra cool that the notes are ocr'd and searchable.
Maybe one day I'll get around to drawing up plot diagrams, creating story arcs, and writing a book... Too busy for that right now though.
I use it to take notes. My daughter uses it for notes and to annotate her books for her English class using the reader that came installed on the flyer.
Everything. I am a recruiter for a consulting firm and take notes on my conversations with candidates - been using evernote for a few years so its a virtual database of people now. Also in grad school and use it to mark up powerpoints and sometimes record audio or the cam to capture diagrams on whiteboards. Used it at a family get together to find a pizza place with Google maps, pull up the menu, and write down (on the menu screenshot) our complete order - easily placed the correct orders and people were like "that is awesome". A life saving feature is accessing my home machine via logmein as well. I love this thing.

I thought this thread would be inunaudated with great uses...........
To be honest, I simply use the notes application with Evernote on the PC to record all of my customer meetings. The audio integration works excellently and has reduced the volume of notes per meeting. No longer do I have to carry multiple paper note books with me nor flip through pages to find prior notes. Very happy!
My wife and I recently went shopping for a new dishwasher. It was cool to be able to snap a picture of the floor units and take notes (including wriiting down the model numbers to look up online reviews). In case you haven't tried it, pictures you take while the notes app is open are embedded into your note.

one question concerning the screenshots made by notes. Is there a way to make them bigger? I'm not able to read the text in the screenshots because of too small and I canot zoom in or find the parameters to save in another size. The screenshot size is ok when working on it (just after creating the shot) but when I safe the note and open it again the size is too small.

Use the Evermore app in parallel. Images in notes are able to be manipulated.
A bit of a pain, but i have the two apps set up different ways which works well.

They say that the Honeycomb upgrade will expand the use of the Pen and the notes application, Hopefully................
I have actually been using it in class to record the lecture while taking my notes on it. I use it in landscape mode. It takes a bit to get used to and find what pen settings work best, but after the initial curve it works fairly well. I will switch between it and my etextbook and blackboard all at the same time. I have to keep an eye on the back button but have been satisfied with being able to see my notes appear a they were written when the lecture was going on. I bought a transformer this weekend to use for my textbooks and blackboard to take the load off my view. yes I will be using two tablets in class at once but it still beats a huge laptop or a bunch of books and spirals.
I'm a graphic designer for a clothing company. I use it take snap shots of clothes we have made protos of and make comments of changes that are required. Some meetings I'm taking notes while listening and recording comments from merchandisers on what styles sells best. Also while I commute to work in NYC metro, I would usually see few designs I get inspired by and usually sketch the concepts. Its a general good source of data, since I carry it with me everywhere I have access of my thoughts and inspirations on the go. But after making these comments, I really hope HC makes better use of the Tablet and pen. It is lacking in some areas and it is not always the most enjoyable experience. Sketching is okay at best and the longer files tend to be a little laggy. Hoping for a better sketching integration of notes and evernote.
A positive prime thread. I've had mine for two weeks now and this week was exactly what I bought the prime for. Work sent me off on a week long seminar course.
daytime, I used the prime for notes in the seminar. Running quick office HD was easy. The keyboard was able to cope with my typing speed (80wpm) and inbetween note taking I was checking email and a bit of web browsing during the boring bits of the seminar using my HTC sensation as a wifi hotspot.
Lunchtime involved angry birds, cut the rope, some comic viewing using the ACV app (awesome)
evenings was web browsing, movie playback, more games and some email, facebook use.
It lasted a full day easily, coped with everything like a trouper and was exactly why I wanted one of these things.

Another happy prime user here! I am a medical student and use it all day looking up clinical information and using citrix to access patient information. I couldn't be happier!
We have three people here in our firm who are very happy Prime owners. The other two are first-time Android device owners. Our units came in around the same time and none of us have had any (ANY!) of the negative issues mentioned in these forums. Not one.
Not to say those users are imaging their problems nor am I calling them liars, but these tablets are fantastic. The WiFi is comparable to my Xoom, the AGPS (thought I hardly ever use it for navigation) works fine, the Bluetooth is flawless, there is no screen tearing, etc. I have watched a movie on my train ride this morning and a show (one episode) for lunch and little but of downloading, tinkering and emailing here and there... I still have more than 50% left after 9 hours of on and off usage. I've also switched between modes while I used it.
Though my experience wasn't measured in a scientific manner, it tells me one thing: For my use, this tablet has exceeded my expectations. For what I want, and bought, this tablet for I can do everything I want to and then some. Keep in mind, I'm a long-time happy Xoom owner who is still very, very happy fond of it. My 2-year old son has taken over ownership of my Xoom which was what prompted me to buy a new tablet.
The Prime is THAT much better.
EDIT: I don't use my Prime for play only. I'm in IT working for a law firm. I use Citrix, remote administration, etc. I also do photography using my tablet to display each shot to clients rather than a laptop wirelessly. I didn't mention those because I thought that most Android tablet owners didn't buy their to use them solely as toys unlike iPad owners (lol). I just thought that that was a given. But yeah, my tablets since the Xoom has been corporate workhorses, not toys. I have every Bluetooth device paired to my Prime from headphones, mice and keyboards to PS3 controllers. The Prime is a beast.
Oh, and the other Prime owner in our firm is also IT and the other is an office manager. So I'll leave it to your imaginations what we do with our tablets. Lol.

As a curiosity about the note taking, I want to know; why QuickOffice? For me, taking notes should be something I would want to access everywhere. So why not use Evernote or similar competitors?
I find that in lectures I take long notes with Evernote, save them, and then I have to use my laptop to program hours later and I find it easier to have Evernote displayed on there.
This thing is awesome. I use it the same way I did with the OG Transformer, except it is so much faster, sleeker, and a hell of a lot better build quality.
have been using prime for over a week and found nth wrong with it other then weak gps signals but the rest are okay.
I noticed a few days ago that my GPS DOES work (I used to think it didn't, I just had to wait a little longer for it to search for satellites). So that made me happy (though i'm always around wifi hotspots and my position can be determined from that, so GPS on my tablet isn't a big deal).
so i'm guessing most if I have the dock...isn't it cumbersome to type, then trap the screen for whatever reason? And what if you need to draw something?
why bring the prime + dock instead of a laptop?
I'm mainly just contemplating in getting a dock...
I'll admit that I haven't searches to much for answers/opinions to my questions, so I apologize i'm advanced...

to clarify the note taking. I type straight into a doc file because when I go back to the office tomorrow, I need to transcribe them into a doc file to distribute to everyone.
the note program may be fine, but I need to know I can copy/paste it into word back in the office later.

Good to hear about your positive experience with office documents. I really need this feature. I had a Prime but had to return it because it was stuck in bootloop.
I'm in college and I need the feature to take notes. However, I like to add the professor's drawings into the document so office documents don't seem to work as well for this. As a way to compensate, I use NoteEverything android app. I can take textual notes, plus make a drawing and resize the drawing to what ever size I want along side my notes. Plus, when I want to review the drawing, I can blow it back up and see it in full size. You can even do multiple drawings in one document.
However, I would love to be able to do this in some kind of office document so that it is transferable. Do you have any suggestions?
You could just use google docs, since it's already a syncing app you can install on your device. You can copy/paste once you get back to a computer. (in chrome at least)
Reasons to get a keyboard dock versus bringing a laptop? Battery life... for one...
In quickoffice, you can save directly to DropBox or GoogleDocs. It's pretty sweet. I like it much better than the included Polaris because of this--though it has less formatting options.

This is my first tablet and it is awesome. I've messed with friends iPad 2's and they are just big iPod touches to me. Really toy like. My work laptop crapped out and I sent it to our IT department for repair (I can fix it myself but I don't mess with our work computers, I get enough of that at home) anyway, I've been using my Prime at work for everything I do on my laptop (i5 quad core) and the Prime did it flawlessly. I wish we would get rid of our laptops now and go with Primes. This is a great device.
Hello everyone. So currently I am considering getting the HTC Flyer. I can get one for around $160 USD (used but in good condition). Is it worth it? I definitely cannot afford new tablets but a used one with decent specs would do. I am about to enter college in the fall and was wondering if this tablet would be useful for this purpose, specifically because of the pen. Does the pen seem more like a gimmick or is it really useful (like with school and professional related tasks). Also, if I do get the HTC Flyer, can you all share what are great apps to make this device extra handy (apps which utilize the pen, notes and documents).
Recommended accessories would also be nice! Affordable ones that is. The pen is already sooooo expensive (IMHO) and I WANT it!!!
Is it advisable to update to HC or leave it on Android 2.3? I like the new pen features of HC but it seems HC is buggy (from what I read on this forum) and that isn't favorable when I may be taking notes in college with this thing.
I just want to get a device that would help me all round. Some entertainment here but useful in the classroom. I am on a tight budget (still have to get a laptop so please consider that)

I purchased the flyer specifically for the pen usage and am very satisfied with it. I upgraded to honeycomb and if your main use is for the pen I suggest that you do too. I like the ability to annotate books in either epub or PDF. I like the feature in the stock notes app where you can record and your written notes are time stamped and synced with the recording and ultimately with evernote. however I don't particularly like how writing the notes are implemented (it is constantly wasting time autosaving). if you are just taking notes I would suggest using apps such as quill or papyrus (I myself prefer papyrus - it is very smooth and uses both buttons on the pen). what else I have been doing is using the voice recording app along with apps such as papyrus then exporting them together into the notes app which then seamlessly syncs with evernote (yes I know it seems tedious but I only do this if i really need the lecture recorded). the only thing that I really desire is a fully functional handwriting recognition app. I downloaded a couple of apps (thanks to Gumby) such as notes mobile. they work fairly well however my handwriting is so poor it isn't worth it. my family does much better with it so perhaps you can too.
so all in all if the flyer is in good shape for $160 I would highly recommend it. if i think of anything else to say I will let you know.

Anyway 160bucks is a nice price if you want a 7" tablet the flyer is great, but if you want to spend just 160bucks to replace a paper book to take notes in class that's going to disappoint you

just wondering which app do you use to take notes? I can see the difficulty if you are using the stock notes app (due to the constant autosaving) but apps such as papyrus are very smooth and I find note taking to be very easy and productive.
So far the stock tool and MS notes, I'll try papyrus and let you know

Just asking...I remember reading that only ebooks bought from Kobo can be annotated through the supplied app. But...is there anyway to side load e-pub and pdf books and annotate them the same way? Like through alternative apps. The Kobo way would be kind of expensive.

And the developer is legend, I mailed him a couple of times with usability issues and within 3 or 4 days the updated app was on the marketplace. There is a free version to try, give it a spin.

I believe that the standard HTC reader app should let you annotate ebooks. I actually sideloaded an epub on my Flyer and noted that I was able to highlight and take notes on. However, it should be noted that I'm running LeeDroid for Honeycomb, so I have no idea how everything works when the unit is stock.
I initially purchased the Flyer because it was cheap and slightly more portable than my HP Touchpad (running CM9) for travel purposes (i occasionally need to run Citrix to access my company's desktop). I also preferred it over the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet due to the existence of the cameras (I skype with my grandmother in Asia). Plus, the battery life on this thing is phenomenal. The fact that I got it for about $170 just made it all the sweeter. The only downside thus far, in my opinion, is the lack of ICS. I know a lot of people have commented that it is a single core machine. Since I don't really play any games on the tablet, this is a non-issue for me.
I thought that the pen was a total gimmick and unnecessary. For most of my uses, that is true. However, I figured out that my office can send me PDF documents, which I can sign using the pen, save the signed PDF, and send it back to my office. This does not happen that often, but it's a pretty neat feature to have.
Thanks everyone for the input. I made the plunge! I know this is off topic but...the Flyer I bought doesn't include a USB cable, only the charger. Would the standard USB cable work for this for PC connection? I really do hope so. Accessories for this thing already aren't cheap!
Yes normal usb cable is fine, for accessories look on eBay is not bad eve of for genuine HTC parts.

That's where I normally buy my accessories. I looked for the OEM cable which is a bit pricey IMHO. I will use my old USB cable! IS it slower or anything to transfer data with this cable though?
No I didn't isn't, the port is only different from mechanical point of view to prevent that you put other devices on the flyer OEM charger and damage them.... The amount of amps is just dangerous for over devices..
For example when my wife uses her ipad charger to charge her iphone the phone gets really hot and probably would be damaged if kept on to long.

I would like to think so. I'm a note taking guy. Always trying to take notes on stock, customers, personal tasks things like that. You can even make folders and organize it to categories. You have to get use to the handwriting. Mine has improved, but started as if a 5 year old wrote them. Now looks like a 12 year old. Ive let others write things on it with better success. Could be my very own penmanship to be honest lol. I think its great for my note taking needs. I wish my Co worker had a note so that we can collaborate and share notes that we have written. In fact i chose to sick with this over the s3 because of that and size.

If it was the note 10.1, yeah. This is good for short, quick notes. The tablet would be better for more intense note taking. The screen and pen isn't exactly the most accurate.

I actually used it to take notes for my college classes this last semester. My mileage varied, and I had to experiment a bit to get things to where it worked out. I found myself using smemo, but ended up almost never using handwriting to take the bulk of my notes that consisted of text. I would use the tablet swype beta with the pen, because I found that to be much faster than actually handwriting notes out. Plus, you can fit more info on a screen with text instead of handwriting. Also, the tablet swype has a tab key which is very useful for indenting notes.
Where the note shines for electronic note taking is its ability to combine text entered with the keyboard with sketches and pictures. Until getting my note, I had wanted and tried to take notes electronically with my laptop, but always ran into troubles with graphs, sketches, and equations. The note allows you to use both text, and also scribble those things down when needed, which I found very satisfying. And that was before premium suite, which added even more features that make it even better. Equations were always way to difficult to type up properly, so whenever I needed to take note of an equation, I would just switch to the pen and hand write it out, making fractions, integrals, exponents, and other non typical characters a breeze to record.
As for storing and organizing my notes, I used evernote to sync them into a different folder for each class after I was done for the day. Smemo/snote have a feature to sync to evernote right in the app, so its really simple and useful.
If you're planning on getting the note anyways (not sure why anybody wouldn't if they're looking for a new phone), its definitely possible and worth a shot.
Edit: I agree with the others though on the fact that the note 10.1 would be the real way to go, but for what the note can do as a phone, its friggen amazing and makes me excited about the future of the line. I told myself I don't need a tablet, but thinking about the note 10.1 makes me almost want to get it purely for note taking in class, just because the experience has been satisfactory on my note already, and the same experience on a bigger screen would be awesome.

I would consider the keyboard if I could type fast on one. I swype faster than I type, as I use two fingers on a normal keyboard. Always hated that b*tch Mavis Beacon...haha.
Yes, the note doesn't work for everybody, but I just said they should consider it. There are a few female users on here, or users who have wives with notes that love it even though they have small hands and pockets. I see the size as a double edged sword, its either love or hate I suppose. Haha. It's definitely worth a look by everybody.
Also, I usually get more awestruck looks and questions than teasing when people see my phone. Only my close friends will tease and call it a tablet, and I just say, damn straight, I friggen love my tablet!

Note to bring up an old-ish thread but... I was wondering about this exact same thing.
I'm currently going for my Bachelors in Petrol Eng and have a lot of Math to go through.
I was mainly interested in the phone because of the sheer size of the phone, but I am worried that I couldn't go back to anything smaller and more normal and rationally sized after having a Note.
But how is it for Calculus notes? Or does anyone have any take on this?

Like I've said, its definitely doable, but can take some getting used to. I would make sure and get on an ICS rom with premium suite, as then you would have maximum functionality, and I found the spen to be even more accurate. I haven't tried it, but there is an equation tool even in the premium suite s note application, which could potentially be really useful. However, if you wanted to guarantee good note taking, I would get the Note 10.1 when it comes out, as it has the same functionality but a much larger screen.

It's all a matter of personal preference personally I use a netbook for taking notes in class, but several people I know and my friends who have tablets use a a tablet and keyboard combination for taking notes (Ranging from ASUS Transformer to Ipad with bluetooth dock keyboard cover) and it works great for them. If you want to go light and the tablet/keyboard combo works for you I say go for it. Also check out Evernote, in my opinion the best mobile note taking app out there right now, plus it easily syncs with your Evernote notes on your desktop, on pretty much any OS and you can also edit your notes easily and conveniently from the web.

I've been using my ICS tablet for quite some time at school now... works great. All I miss is a fysical keyboard. Even use Aldiko to read my schoolbooks...

Well I miss the physical keybord too, but my TF101 is wonderful for slides consulting, I waste much less paper since I own it.

Catch is good but I feel as if Evernote is more polished, less buggy, and works better cross platform. Plus for me while the interface felt nice, things didn't necessarily seem as intuitive as they could have been, nerveless it is still a good alternative to Evernote. I also use AK Notepad by the people who make Catch for real simple quick and dirty note takings (Have been using that since early on with my Droid 1).
Over here in my school its compulsory for everyone to have a *cough* iPad *cough* (because its simple to use... really??), yeah I prefer it to pen and paper. Much faster and I get more customisation choices, screw different coloured pens... they're all on Google docs and I share them with everyone plus they don't get lost. Love it.
