Home Key lag - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I dont know if anyone of you noticed but when i press the home key on the sgs2, it takes a second or two to respond. I HATE IT. I know samsung did that so it can make sure that we are not pressing it twice for voice control activation.
But I don't care abt voice navigation control. is there anyway to speed the home key action? I need instantaneous jump to home screen as soon as I press the home key. Please help.
Thanks

already resolved in most custom roms
there is also a thread in original development (found via searching) that details how to do it manually

[Q] Remap power key to launch CRT shutdown app

Need help remapping power key. Someone made awesome app called screen off & lock that does crt shutdown. It would be epic if we could remap power key to launch app.
whoa awesome i just downloaded it. the power button remapping would be awesome, but the long press search button isn't half bad. that's what i'm doing now.

I use voice search all the time. I would think the coding couldn't be to hard but I don't know where to look. It would be awesome if anybody could get this to work.
yeah i'm sure a lot of people use the search button, for some reason i never really need it.
with the camera hack that allows photos to be taken with the power button, and while watching videos, the power button locks the screen while keeping it on, so i know there's gotta be a way to get it to launch this activity. i just don't have any experience with this kind of stuff.
edit -
saw an app called galaxy tuner that apparently remaps buttons, but i am unable to mess with my phone while at work. give it a shot maybe?

[Q] 4 Buttons on right side of screen

HI...i am brand new to the forum...got my Gtablet the other day....upgraded firmware...so far without installing another Rom....i like the device...I am just checking to see if the 4 buttons on the right side..IE....SEARCH HOME MENU and BACK....should ALWAYS respond...OR if each only will respond depending on what is currently on yr screen....The HOME button ALWAYS seems to bring me to the home screen...the other 3 seem to respond ( or not ) depending on what is screen at the time....they device seems to work fine and the 4 buttons do respond do respond depending on what is on the screen at the time so i am assuming that the buttons physically so work ok.....id appreciate anyone's input....thanks a lot.....
From the user manual (http://www.viewsonic.com/gtablet/GTUG010411/G Tablet User Guide Rev Final 01.04.11.htm#_Toc281858063)
Home and Menu do different things depending upon what is running at the time:
IMPORTANT BUTTONS
On the right side of the LCD Screen there are 4 buttons.
1. SEARCH – Pressing the search button from the Home screen will bring up the Google search web site.
2. HOME – Pressing the Home button takes you back to either the Home screen or the Dashboard depending on which screen you were last in.
3. MENU – Pressing the menu button brings up different options based on the application running at the time.
4. BACK – Pressing the back button will always take you back to the previous window displayed.

so then depending on what is on the screen....is it likely that the ...say ...BACK or MENU button would not do anything...depending on what is on the screen at the time.....do others find that? Just making sure the unit doesnt have a defect...Thx

I have definitely seen this with the menu button.. can you give us an example of an app your are in where it is not working? someone can double-check on their tab...
I'm thinking BACK should always work. Are you having a consistent problem with it not working? Could it be sluggishness of the tablet?
Thanks for the replies gang....i just talked to Viewsonic and they indeed said that depending on what u have on yr screen at the time, certain buttons may not cause the screen to change.....such as if i am on my Classic home page and hit the HOME or MENU button....nothing will happen....if i hit the SEARCH button...it will change screens....and then...after going to the search page if i hit the BACK button.,....it will return to the CLASSIC HOME PAGE.......that all makes sense?
Kinda... need moar coffee first ....

Menu button remap

Nova launcher has a feature that lets you remap the long-press of the menu button to do among a number of things, one of which is bringing up the multi-task menu. Anyone know how to make this happen without using this launcher. I've tried editing the file in key_layout but it didn't do anything.
Same type of issue here. (first time post / newb by the way). I'm looking to use a long press of the Back key to act as an alternate home key (but would accept long press of menu key as well). I've tried Nova Launcher, and it can be configured for a long-press of the menu key to go to the "default" screen, which is kind of like having a home key, but it doesn't work unless you are on the 1st level screens (for example it doesn't work if you are using an application, this it is not truly a home key). I've never rooted before and am worried about trying it on my brand new S3 and what it means to warranty. Thus was hoping to find a way to get what I want without rooting, but something tells me I won't be able to. Also, I really didn't want to change to a special launcher like Nova yet, I just want a capacitive home key option. I don't like physical click keys plus my home key is harder to reach now with the case that I have. Not sure what to do next. Willing to consider rooting if it the process can be made fairly idiot proof. BTW I'm on Sprint which is not the exact phone as yours.

Rooting is fairly idiot proof on the International SGS3 but you may well have major problems if you are in the wrong forum and flash the wrong firmware for a different model phone like the USA models .

Thanks, appreciate that. I figured as much, but thought the ideas would be similar
Actually what I think would be a more ideal button arrangement for me would be as follows (since my goal is to have a capacitive home key)
1) short-press Menu button would function exactly the same as the physical Home button
2) long-press Menu button would function as the Menu
3) short-press Back would function as Back
4) long-press Back button would bring up a Search screen (kind of like long-press Menu does presently)
I for one am glad that Samsung kept some buttons (like the menu button), instead of going to the true 100% ICS experience.
Maybe I'll switch completely over to the Sprint Galaxy S3 forum in order to avoid any confusion.
cm10 has implemented the button remap feature. now you can easily change the menu button long press to recent apps in cm10

A little problem with Long-press action on nav-bar

I'm currently on a D851 G3 stock rooted MM, I've enabled long-press action on nav-bar however, after I press and hold the home button to turn off the screen then unlocking the screen, open an app and press home button to back to homescreen (here is the problem), it won't, you need to press once again to make it happen I mean I have to press twice to make it back to home, the problem just occurs once right after unlocking my phone. Btw, there is no problem at all after I turn off Long-press action so I assumes there is a minor bug with this greenify function on my phone. Just a small issue but I hope someone can help me with it. Tks guys for reading

Remap power button?

I haven't been able to figure out a way to remap the physical power button. There was an xposed module that worked great long ago, but hasn't been updated to work with oreo. I want to be able to press/long press/double tap/whatever the power key to take me to the home screen. I've used the fingerprint sensor apps, but they're hit or miss at different times, which is more frustrating than not having it. The other button mapper programs seem to work for volume keys only. Rooted/Running LOS ROM
Remapping the power button seems like such a bad idea to me. What happens if you need to reboot?

Why? What does your "home" button do? On my Nova launcher, home button takes me immediately to home screen and much easier/faster than trying to double tap fingerprint sensor, which currently turns off/on display.
Or long tapping, which currently gives you reboot options.
Remapping power button seems like an answer in search of a problem, which would cause more problems?

Home button takes me to home screen as well, which is usually where I want to go. If I'm holding the phone it's much easier to press a physical button to get back. I rarely reboot, so could do away with that. On my G3, I had all the buttons on the back mapped to pull up assistant, go back, go to home screen using single/double/short/long taps. It was MUCH faster to do that. Anyway, I like it, it existed before, I want to know if I can get it back.

So found a program called "powy". It can intercept the power button keypress and then trigger tasker. It can't distinguish long v. short press, but you can program power button to trigger by pressing 1x/2x/3x/etc. Not as good as xposed additions (which hasn't been updated since MM), but functional and better than nothing.
